Trials for Azlan Shah Cup from tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Trials to select Pakistan team for the Azlan Shah Cup will now be held on Sunday and Monday instead of Saturday-Sunday to ensure arrival of Karachi-based players.

‘The News’ has learnt that the PSB has communicated to the organisers of the camp in Karachi to ensure timely arrival of the players at the Bunda Ground on Saturday for the start of the trials from Sunday. “We have communicated to the organisers of the camp in Karachi to ensure timely arrival of players in Islamabad for trials to be conducted on Sunday and Monday. Earlier, the trials were to start from Saturday.

The PSB, however, has delayed start of the trials for a day to ensure timely arrival of Karachi players,” one of the officials told ‘The News’. The organisers in Karachi have also been told that the PSB will reimburse travelling expenditures of the players travelling from Karachi to Islamabad the moment they land in the capital.

“We have already made all the arrangements of their boarding at the PSB Hostel in Islamabad where other hockey players have also been residing since start of the camp,” the official said. The government has already given all the powers to Head Coach Roelant Oltmans to select the team for Azlan Shah Cup in coordination with the director general PSB, a representative from the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA). The POA has nominated former Pakistan captain Manzoorul Hasan to act as a selector and help Oltmans to finalise the team.

Pakistan name 18-man squad for Azlan Shah Cup

ISLAMABAD: After resolving the controversy over two training camps, a selection committee announced an 18-member Pakistan hockey squad for the upcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which will be held in Malaysia from May 4 to May 11.

Seasoned Ammad Shakeel Butt will lead the team with defender Abu Bakar as his deputy. The three-member selection committee consisting of head coach Roelant Oltmans, Monzoor-ul-Hasan Sr., and deputy director-general of the Pakistan Sports Board Mohammad Shahid Islam finalised the squad.

The team comprises two goalkeepers — Abdullah and Muneeb-ur-Rehman, while it includes six defenders — Usman Bashir, Athisham, Mohammad Abdullah, Sufiyan, Abu Bakar, and captain Shakeel Butt. Midfielders Salman Razzaq, Arshad Liaqat, Moin Shakeel, Zakriya Hayat, Murtaza Yaqoob, and Ghazanfar Ali have also been selected.

Forwards Abdul Rehman, Hanan, Rana Waheed, and Ejaz Ahmed complete the squad.

Meanwhile, seven players have been selected as standbys, including Akmal Hussain, Aqeel Ahmed, Arbaz, Hammad Anjum, Abdul Rehman Jr., Abdul Manan, and Rooman.

It is worth noting that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) was recently split in two factions, one headed by Tariq Bugti and the other by Shehla Raza, both conducting separate training camps.

The camp organised by Shehla in Karachi announced a 20-member squad last week. However, after intervention by the federal government, players announced by the Shehla group were brought to Islamabad.

Following trials on Sunday, a new team was announced, comprising players from both camps. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had taken notice of these rival groups, and his coordinator on youth affairs Rana Mashhood played an important role in the selection of the new team.

He announced on Friday that the issue of rival groups would also be settled within the next two days. The members of the selection committee stated that while 18 players have been selected for the Azlan Shah Cup, these players and the seven standbys will form the team for the Nations Cup as well, to be held in Poland from May 31 to June 9.

They added that a total of 44 players participated in pre-selection and trials, with 35 being selected for final trials.

Speaking to Dawn, former Olympian and Pakistan head coach Shahnaz Sheikh said that a balanced team was selected from the available pool of players. He suggested having at least six forwards instead of four.

Nonetheless, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s selection and advised them to adopt an aggressive and attacking approach to achieve good results.

Shahnaz emphasised that playing with an attacking mindset and solid defense would lead to success.

Whenever our team leaves for a tournament, our coaches and management looks satisfied with everything but after the tournament most of them lost their jobs with PHF.

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Pakistan beat Malaysia with last-minute winner

Pakistan defeated Malaysia 5-4 with a last-minute winner by Abu Mahmood in their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup match on Saturday in Ipoh, Perak.

The nine-goal thriller saw some of the best goals as the Green Shirts managed to emerge triumphant after a long 60 minutes.

The match began with Pakistan earning a penalty corner in the ninth minute which was converted by Sufyan Khan without much problems. However, Malaysia responded quickly and levelled the score with Abu Kamal Arzai scoring for the home side.

The first quarter ended 1-1 but Malaysia took the lead in the second quarter as Arzai scored for his once again. The third quarter was no different than the previous one as Arzai completed his hat-trick and put his side in the driving seat.

Malaysia were dominating the match and it looked difficult for Pakistan to break through their defense but they bounced back and scored two goals in quick sessions. Sufyan and Zikriya Hayat scored in the 50th and 53rd minute respectively.

Malaysia once again took the lead in the 56th minute with Marhan Jalil scoring for them and with just four minutes left in the conclusion of the match, it looked over for Pakistan to come back in the game.

But, once again, that was not the case as Pakistan continued to push for a goal and Sufyan once again found the back of the net and levelled the score in the 59th minute.

Seconds after Sufyan scored his third and Pakistan’s fourth, they earned a penalty corner which was converted by Abu Mahmood as Pakistan emerged victorious after a nail-biter.

Pakistan’s next match is now against Korea on Sunday at the same venue.

A good start to the tournament. I hope to see hockey on the rise again in Pakistan.

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Pakistan captain Ammad wants govt to 'support hockey like cricket'

Pakistan hockey team’s captain Ammad Butt has urged the government to support hockey like cricket in the country.

Butt shared these remarks after Pakistan qualified for the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 on Wednesday in Ipoh, Malaysia.

“Pakistan Hockey Federation is not financially strong and television channels don’t show hockey matches. Players don’t have jobs but they are still playing for the green flag because they love Pakistan. I urge the Pakistan government to support hockey like cricket,” Butt told Geo News on Thursday.

“This is a monumental occasion for Pakistan as the last time the team entered the final was in 2011. I am very proud of my team for their hard work and sportsmanship.

“I am thankful to be Pakistan’s captain and to have had the opportunity to be coached by Roelant Oltmans.”

Pakistan are unbeaten in the event, so far, and are at the top of the table with 10 points after four games.

I wish so badly that we as a country never lost focus on Hockey, after hearing about results i went and watched highlights of each match on youtube. Hannan, Sufiyan, Abu Bakar - amazing players! If i was as rich as javed afridi, i would invest in hockey and make it the number 2 sport in Pakistan! High voltage sport, way more fun to watch than cricket. So happy for the boys that they made it to the final, i really hope they win it. They deserve it!

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Pakistan-New Zealand match ends in a draw

Pakistan’s match against New Zealand ended in a 1-1 draw on Friday during the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Pakistan had already qualified for the final after their win against Canada on Wednesday. The Green Shirts will face Japan in the final of the event tomorrow.

Pakistan remained unbeaten during the round-robin stage of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with three wins and two draws in five matches. They only dropped points in matches against Japan and New Zealand.

Pakistan’s performance in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup should be a morale booster for the team especially because the team has to feature in the FIH Nations Cup in Gniezno, Poland, from May 31 to June 9 as well. The Nations Cup is important because the winning team will have the opportunity to play in the FIH Hockey Pro League for the 2024-25 season.

Earlier, while shedding light on Pakistan’s opponents in the final, forward Abdul Hannan Shahid said that Japan’s defensive line is extremely solid. Japan have only conceded four goals, the fewest in the tournament so far, in as many matches.

“Japan are defensively very solid and they don’t give many openings to their opponents,” he said. “As far as attack is concerned, they might not be as creative as some of the other teams but they are quite effective in taking advantage of their opponents’ mistakes on the field.”

“Pakistan have scored a high number of goals but at the same time, we are conceding at the other end as well. However, we will try to rectify our defensive flaws in the remaining matches,” he added.

Japan will face Canada and hosts Malaysia will lock horns with Korea in the remaining matches today.

on one hand its a shame to see how far Pakistan hockey has fallen, on the other hand its worrying because its a premonition of whats gonna happen to the cricket team too

I am proud of our hockey team players. Although they had a good chance to lift the trophy, hats off to them for reaching the final despite having limited resources.

what guarantee can you give that with that much funding you would had made Hockey the number 2 sport in Pakistan?

Its the same old bemoaning whenever some hockey tournament is on and Pakistan losses and the national crying starts that look what happened to Hockey.

Sports is entertainment, people watch entertainment if it attracts them. Field Hockey is a boring sport, something that Pakistanis dont want to admit. You cant force someone to watch something under the name of nationalism.

The field is too spread out and its not fun to watch, gets boring and one really has difficulty in keeping track of the things. Its no where close to the fun and entertainment of football. In countries like Canada, they only let field hockey be played by girls only in schools.

There are sports which are boring and will always have low number of viewers. Lacrosse is the main sport of Canada, yet its boring, only a few watch it, and they dont complain.

Field Hockey is a zabardasti ka sport that is made into a national mourning every now and than.

Why do i or anyone have to give guarantee for win in any sport? What you do is invest in the right resources to aim to get the best result.

Field hockey is a boring sport? Talk about yourself. I find hockey to be the most exciting sport to watch, fast paced, action packed and high voltage. Way better to watch than to see a loser tuk tuk his way to losing his country a semi-final.

How come canada has a men's hockey team if what you are saying is true? I wish Canada had a better hockey team or they were good in any international sport so i could support my canadian side. I support Raptors and Blue Jays but rarely they win any accolades and they are domestic teams.

People mourn about hockey because it has been given zero attention so when the deprived, improvished Pakistani team punches above its weight, the awam mourns for hockey.

You missed the whole point.

Its basic demand and supply.

Field hockey is a boring sport abd you dont throw money in something that is boring

Pakistan missed many easy chances in the last 2 quarters. Should have won the game by a margin of at least 2 goals but they missed the chances. Penalties taken by players were so bad that any ordinary keeper would have stopped them.

But anyways, Pakistan played very well throughout the tournament. Wishing them good luck for the next assignment.

Demand will vanish if:

i) the team doesnt perform
ii) its not actively broadcasted
iii) not played at school level

Ask your dad or your grandparents, how the hockey culture used to be in Pakistan. People used to be glued to their screens. And hockey was not played on astro turf back in those days, it was slower.

I am surprised by the response and celebrations. Pakistan used to be a powerhouse of field hockey and now they see celebrating losing to Japan in finals? This was a tournament where none of top teams participated. If I am not wrong Japan is also lower ranked than Pak and routinely gets trashed when playing with big boys. And if you saw the match (I saw for some time and then watched highlights) quality was very poor. Pak missed numerous chances and the penalties were laughable efforts.

It's okay to be happy, but the celebrations seems to be a overdone

Ammad Butt frustrated by ‘negative impression’ of Pakistan hockey team

Upon his return to the country after playing the final of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, Pakistan hockey team’s captain Ammad Butt said that he was frustrated by the negative impression of his side in an exclusive interview with Geo News.

Pakistan lost in the final of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to Japan on penalty shootout.

"When we returned to the airport, the nation looked very happy, congratulations to the nation. We lost the final of the Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament but won the hearts of the nation,” said Butt.

He asked the nation to keep supporting the sport and their national team.

"Don't give a negative impression of the Pakistan hockey team, support it,” he said.

To regain the hockey glory of the past, Butt thinks that hockey activities should be revived in educational institutions.

“Before the Azlan Shah Tournament, Pakistan hockey was in decline, there was no government support. I request the Pakistan Hockey Federation to revive hockey activities in colleges and universities. The children should be taught the national sport,” the captain of the national hockey team said.

"In the 90s, Pakistan taught hockey to the Western countries now the Western coaches and countries are teaching hockey to Pakistan,” he added.

Butt said that there is no lack of hockey talent in Pakistan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is working really hard for the development of all sports in the country.
