What's new

The Aston Villa Fan Club

Defended very well against a high quality team, let ourselves down towards the end but a decent start. Hopefully we get better.

Decent start from Villa, plenty of energy and showed no fear but dont know how to keep possesion for any length of time.

Should do well at Villa Park but will be very happy to survive the drop back to the champioship.

I agree, they should aim much higher but I would be happy with a finished outside the last 4

1st half the plan went really well...for all of Spurs shots most of them were from distance...their 4-4-2 diamond just didn't work...

2nd half they went to a flat 4-4-2 and our centre backs and full backs handled them well..

Spurs finally realised they could overrun us through the centre and went 4-2-3-1 through the centre when Eriksen came on and then they just got so much more dangerous...even then though they had to rely on a mistake from Jack for 2-1...

El Ghazi wasn't fully fit...him and McGinn will have better games possession wise (both had pass %s under 60)...

With Luiz and Nakamba to come in we'll actually have someone who can win the ball in midfield...and retain...Hourihane was just chasing shadows...

I'm positive knowing we can do better once our new signings are bedded in...

With Luiz one has to remember that Rodri was Peps plan B...he wanted Luiz...we have a baller on our hands...

Area where we are weak though is depth on the wings...and up front...its a big season for Davis who may have to fill in at times...

It will be a long hard season for Villa. No goals in the team, and Mings is always prone to one mistake a game that'll be punished at this level.

Wesley is the new Emile Heskey.

FWAW.

Guess we'll have to revisit this post later in the season...

Wesley is most certainly not a Heskey...strong and physical yes...but his attributes are his link up play and passing...he'll score as many as he will assist...

Goals all over our team...Hourihane has a lovely left foot...McGinn and Jack will score goals...and Trezeguet will terrorise defences that aren't as good as Spurs...

Mings made no mistakes in our last game...him and Engels were excellent...problem was our midfield...

Get a better handle of us when we play a side like Bournemouth...

Your team came via the playoffs, so wasnt even the best team in a very poor Championship. You have employed a scattergun approach to recruitment, and very few players with PL experience.

This is a very tough league, where even the likes of Burnley and Brighton will punish mistakes. Greasy Jack is a good player, but he wont be allowed to run games at this level. Mings was so good that he couldnt get into a poor Bournemouth side. McGinn is probably your best player, alongside Heaton. The rest of the squad are untested foreigners or PL failures.

You wont go down as there are probably three worse teams than you, but you will do well to finish 15th.

Interesting, who do you support in the PL btw

The pride of the WM, Wolves, so Im talking from experience.

The pride of my behind more like it, experience from being jobbers :yk2 how many first division titles have you won? How many Euro titles again ? Delusional. West Brom have a better shot at being a pride more then you, wolvo are an absolute disgrace, vile team and fans

Your delusional fans do make me laugh. All your titles were decades ago. Recently, you’ve been marooned in the second tier.

And we have vile fans? Your fans were wanting Smith out as late as February when you lost to Albion. And I’m not talking a small minority either.

Show some humility my friend. I was merely offering you my informed opinion as a fan of another recently promoted team. You’ll find it very difficult because of the step up; also, you have notoriously fickle fans who will jump on the manager first bad run he has, when what you need is continuity.

Good luck, you’ll need it.

Yawn...

Nothing scattergun about our approach at all...we have a clear model in place...the Fulham comparison is just lazy...

I'd say we finished as the best side in the Championship...we started under Bruce remember who got the sack...and then we got unfortunate with injuries...with our first choice side we actually got that record for consecutive wins...

I'm under no illusions and I'm not suggesting we are going to conquer the league ...

Who btw are our Premier league failures???...oh wait is that what Mings is?...he spent most of that time injured frankly...and then they replaced him with Mepham...and Ake and Cook are not a poor pairing in any case...

Still not as big a club as ours i'm afraid...Mendes has brought you to the prem...

On the subject of Smith he is someone who will get time...even if we got down he will get time...

Your head of recruitment is Christian Purslow. He invented scattergun recruitment. Speak to any LFC fan and they will tell you how poor his recruitment was for them.

Mings was always 'nearly' a good CB. But he always has a mistake in him. Its in his game, much like Stones. But he isnt a Stones - more of a Titus Bramble.

PS. Greasy Jack actually holds the PL record for most consecutive PL losses (19 and counting).

Bigger club haha. What are you, 12?

Yes we have utilised Mendes, but you have also played with FFP.

And Smith wont get time. Your fans are considered the most fickle in the WM. Throwing cabbages at Bruce, booing lifelong Villa fan Smith after just a few matches. And your two billionaire owners have spent £150m to date - they want results and Smith will be a goner (I predict Mourinho by November to come in if results dont come) regardless of the fans' wishes.

Long hard season, eh boys?:)))

You're still looked upon as jobbers in the WM and football in general no matter what :yk2 Villa is your superior, this is why you come here for respect, WolverJobberton don't even have a fan club here :yk3

Disastrous start to the season

Not ideal but the goal is to stay out the bottom three this season and take it from there, don't expect the road back to PL to be easy but we are back where we belong

That’s all you have haha? Pitiful.

Villa dominated the game today without being dangerous. Two lapses in concentration and Bournemouth took control. Mistakes you can get away with in the Championship but not at PL level.

No goal threat from Villa, and fans already slagging Wesley off on Twitter as the new Heskey. You need goals to survive at this level, and Villa’s scattergun approach to recruitment (especially in the attacking positions) was always going to make this a long hard season.

Told you so. On both counts. Reality bites.

Kevin MacDonald leaves Aston Villa after bullying investigation

Aston Villa's head of football development Kevin MacDonald has left the club following an investigation into allegations of bullying.

He had been reassigned to non-player-facing duties during the investigation.

Ex-midfielder Gareth Farrelly said MacDonald was "relentlessly negative" to him as a youth coach in the 1990s.

"Aston Villa wishes to apologise to all former players who were affected by behaviour which would not be tolerated by the club today," a statement said.

MacDonald, 58, a Double winner with Liverpool as a player in 1986, had twice been caretaker manager at Villa, including last season after Steve Bruce was sacked.

He was also Villa's assistant manager under Tim Sherwood and most recently the under-23s manager. He had a brief spell as manager at Swindon Town in 2013.

Former Aston Villa academy graduate and Republic of Ireland international Farrelly, now a qualified solicitor, told the Guardian last year MacDonald was "incredibly aggressive, with constant verbal and physical bullying".

The Villa statement added: "An investigation, carried out by barrister Jack Mitchell, has now concluded and the results delivered to the board.

"As the report forms part of an employee disciplinary process, the club is unable to provide details in public although copies of Mr Mitchell's investigation have been provided to the FA, Premier League and statutory authorities.

"Mr Mitchell appealed for individuals to come forward to give evidence and we are especially grateful to those former players who assisted him in his investigation.

"Our approach to safeguarding is now unrecognisable from the past."

Villa scored against the run of play but he played very well since the goal. They just need to maintain concentration for the next 45 minutes.

Emile Wesley actually looks Bette and not powderpuff tonight.

Purslow was never head of recruitment for Liverpool nor is he head of recruitment for Villa.

The least you can do is get your facts straight

He is the CEO of Villa, and was the CEO of Liverpool. So of course he is the one signing off the cheques for the recruitment. Therefore no need for the semantics.

Good win for Villa tonight, though Everton looked terrible. Silva has to be under pressure considering how much they have spent.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has signed a new four-year contract until 2023.

The 48-year-old joined Villa in October 2018, succeeding Steve Bruce who was sacked after one win in nine league games.

Smith led the club to promotion from the Championship with a 2-1 victory against Derby in the play-off final in May.

Villa are 15th in the Premier League, four points above the relegation zone.

Smith told the official website: "I'm really happy to have committed my long-term future to the club.

"I'm looking forward to all the challenges that come with re-establishing Aston Villa as a top Premier League club."

I like that we are planning long term and given Smith a long rope in this regard, hopefully we can just about survive and remain in the PL this season and then take it from there, still not sitting compatibly need a much more substantial lead from the bottom 3

shaz619 I might be at Villa Park for the Carling Cup game v Liverpool.

You should really beat us, even Klopp wont be there lol.

Hope you enjoy the game mate, it would be a big feather in our cap and we do desperately need a win to boost our confidence after some poor results, is there a second leg in the QF's I don't think so though but not sure

No and I might be wrong but no extra time either.

Thanks, should be a nice atmosphere with Xmas around the corner.

Very quiet on this thread - not surprising considering the famously fickle nature of Villa fans.

As predicted by me many months ago, the hordes have already turned on Smith. And now there are concerns about FFP.

Enjoy your long, hard season lads.

Dean Smith says Aston Villa are facing the prospect of playing without at least two of their squad members due to the risk of coronavirus infection, should the Premier League season resume.

The Aston Villa boss revealed to The Football Show that one of his players is asthmatic and another has a vulnerable mother-in-law living with the family and there is a real possibility the team could return to training and matches without them.

"Everybody wants to get back into training but they also want to see what the medical protocols are first," said Smith. "There's a certain risk attached to the return to training for all players and I think they want to make sure they tick the boxes so it's safe to do so.

"We've got a player who is asthmatic, we've got a player whose mother-in-law is in remission and living with the family. You have to be very careful, certainly the transmission knows no boundaries.

"From what I'm told, we have to be led by the government at the moment. There's a lot of hypothetical questions out there at the moment but until we get the guidance from the government about how they want to move forward out of this lockdown there are a lot more questions than there are answers at this moment.

"The players' health and safety is paramount and if they're not comfortable to return then you have to return without them, when it's safe to do so. We have to listen to our players, we have to listen to their concerns. If the protocols say we can move forward then the ones who can do will do so."

Smith's season review
Villa sat second from bottom in the Premier League when the lockdown forced the suspension of the season. However, victory in their game in hand on the teams around them would lift them out of the relegation zone.

Smith says Villa are eager to get back to playing when it is safe to do so to complete their campaign and he has been using the pause in the season to analyse how his side have performed so far and what they can do to improve in the future.

"I've been having regular chats with the coaching staff about how we adapt to the new situation, what it might look like," he said. "But it's also given me time to review and reflect on what we've done so far.

"I've managed to do a video chat with each individual player and review their season so far, how they think they've done and how I think they've done, and we're having regular group chats now.

"We have a once-a-week chat with the players, talking about little things and they watch a couple of games and review back to us. We've had to be a little bit innovative in what we do but the compliance of the players has been excellent.

"Nobody wants to have this pandemic but it has given us the opportunity to review where we're at and reflect on what we've done so far.

"I'd never get a chance during the season to have a chat with my players for an hour, just on their season so far, what they need to improve on, how I feel they've done. Or to go back and watch every single game.

"The season is fast-paced, you finish one game and you're already planning for the next game and this gives us that chance to just pause, reset, reflect and hopefully move forward and be better for it."

According to Asthma UK the NHS now say that you would be considered at very high risk if ALL THREE of these things apply to you: You have asthma, AND you are taking certain extra controller medicines as well as a preventer inhaler, AND you are taking continuous or frequent oral steroids. The British Thoracic Society also says that you are at very high risk if you are taking a biologic therapy for severe asthma.

This is 'a significant week for the future of football in this country', according to Sky Sports' latest podcast.

In an in-depth preview, Sky Sports News' chief reporter Bryan Swanson and reporter Kaveh Solhekol explain where Project Restart - the plan to resume football in England - is up to, what needs to happen before football can return and the hurdles which must still be overcome.

Jack Grealish has been charged with driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop at or report a collision.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has been charged with driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop at or report a collision.

West Midlands Police said the charges follow an incident in Dickens Heath, Solihull, on Sunday 29 March.

An investigation was launched after reports of a car hitting parked vehicles and the driver fleeing on foot, the force said.

Grealish is scheduled to appear in court before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on August 25 to answer the charges.

A statement from West Midlands Police read: "A Premier League footballer has been charged with driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop at or report a collision.

"Jack Grealish is accused of the offences in Waterside, Dickens Heath, Solihull, on Sunday, March 29.

"An investigation was launched after we responded to reports of a car hitting parked vehicles and the driver fleeing on foot.

"The 24-year-old from Barnt Green, Worcestershire, has been postal charged to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on August 25."

Aston Villa will play Premier League football next season after a draw at West Ham was enough to ensure they escaped relegation on the final day of the league campaign.

Hometown hero and captain Jack Grealish looked to have sealed a win for Villa with a powerful strike in the 84th minute, but Andriy Yarmolenko's deflected leveller soon after made it a nervy finale for the visitors.

They hung on though and the point, coupled with a defeat for Watford at Arsenal, ensured Villa's survival and consigned the Hornets to the Championship next season along with Bournemouth, whose win at Everton was not enough.

It caps an impressive end to the season for Dean Smith's side, who were seven points from safety two weeks ago but then put together their first four-game unbeaten run of 2019-20 to survive.

It was a game of few chances at the London Stadium, although the in-form Michail Antonio would have made Villa's afternoon a lot more tense had he not blazed a shot wide with just the keeper to beat in the first half.

West Ham secured their own Premier League place for 2020-21 with a draw at Manchester United on Wednesday.

#UpTheVilla :afridi

Proud of the team, legitimately doubted if they could stay up when they were away from safety by 7 points or so and what a dramatic game against West Ham, we never make it easy for the fans lol hopefully we can be more consistent next season, on a side note glad to see West Brom promoted to the PL as well

Well played Villa

Nervy day but congrats for staying up in the Premier League.

I don't think any goal keeper could have saved that equaliser :)) can't remember the last time I seen a lob like that lols but you just expect drama like this from Villa games, it seemed too good to be true to see Grealish hit the winner, but glad he got his name on the score sheet after a few missed chances in the game

It was a big win, not many expected a Villa win after Arsenal beat City and Liv.

Helping to keep a team in the PL is a massive achievement and Im sure he wants to show his loyalty for another bash next season.

Villa are not a poor team, they have plenty of money. Next season you cannot find yourselves in such a position. Not sure the manager will survive.

Congrats shaz619 - Villa is among the elites of English soccer, and the most popular club in mid-country. It's going to be a great 2020-21 season with two of the stalwarts of English soccer are back in EPL - A Villa (they were all but gone till 36th game) and Leeds United. You can add WBA as well, a former 1st Division champs.

Anyways it’s great achievement. Congrats!

It's not even that tbh it's for us to appease players of his calibre who still have a bit to offer, we had him on loan as well so a short term thing but wouldn't mind if we have him back, I certainly hope we don't find ourselves in this position again, don't want to be a relegation football team, they do have a bit of cash which is a positive, how we utilise it will be key

Thanks buddy, in a strange way have become even more passionate these past few years when we dropped out the PL but they have desperately needed that support more then ever, playing the highest level of football is often taken for granted and also in arguably the toughest league in the world. Definitely happy to see WBA, not so sure about Leeds :yk We've fired one of our directors who was handling how the moneys were utilised this season, I just feel we need a 'manager' opposed to head coach, don't know if we will see Grealish and Dean next season but they have been a tremendous duo in the circumstances

He only won FA cup with Liverpool I think.

Thanks Slog, yes he had one that and also EFL cup, community shield and the UEFA super cup although don't know how valuable that one would be for LFC fans but still a trophy I guess

Grealish if he was to leave for United he wont be guaranteed to start so maybe he might stay, I don't know of other teams who are interested; Tottenham were rumoured a few years ago.

Overall a satisfactory season just about, we had some early blows with injuries and the team didn't have a lot of time to build that chemistry but they pulled together in the end

Grealish if he was to leave for United he wont be guaranteed to start so maybe he might stay, I don't know of other teams who are interested; Tottenham were rumoured a few years ago.

i dont think Grealish is good enough to be a starter for a top 4 team right now. He is very skilful and exciting to watch for sure but certain aspects of his game where you need to put in the hard yards leave a lot to be desired.

He makes too many mistakes imo and loses the ball a lot which is quite frustrating and may be fine with Villa but not a United or Chelsea let alone Liverpool or City. He is a great highlights player but the inconsistent parts of his game would be magnified a lot lot more when he is playing for a team competing for top honors. Ofcourse there is the flip argument that if he moves to a top club then these other less flashy aspects of his game may develop and he cuts out the mistakes to become more well-rounded.

Personally I think the best course for his career is to stay put at his childhood club as they progress through the seasons to become a regular top 10 club with the right investment. That would be great for his legacy.

Excellent news, not surprised; he has been a lifelong fan, I imagine there will be that clause to sell him off if we drop down which is appropriate

A great night indeed but loads to do this season, Watkins suits our style of play contrary to the skeptics who wanted the bournmouth strikers bur hopefully he can take confidence from this for rest of the season and Villa especially who are on a decent run. Definetly a bonus to see scousers on the recieving end and the LFC's pathetic fans

Of course, but considering their current standing and status and where Liverpool are today, this night is going to be remembered forever. It is probably the greatest individual PL win by any side in a very long time.

No need of mocking them. They were promoted after 3 years and barely survived relegation last season. Of course they are going to celebrate this victory like a trophy, it is among the greatest individual PL wins ever.

Fans always go overboard when they achieve something big especially after a long time.

Last season, Liverpool fans acted as if they were the first team ever to walk the league, and in spite of all the noise they made, they couldn’t match Man City’s 2017-18 season and ended up with more defeats and less points.

The players were doing photoshoots with the PL and UCL trophy together, even though they had won the UCL in the previous season and were already dumped out by Atletico when they were holding both trophies together for the cameras.

If someone sees those photos without context, they would think that Liverpool did the double.

So please don’t mock Villa fans. All fans go overboard with celebrations within their capacity.

Be humble. They have every right to celebrate this demolition. They opened a gaping wound in our side that may take a long time to heal.

But Arsenal fans need to pipe down. Arsenal fans are amongst the most delusional on the planet. You guys are the reason your team has been mocked over the last few years. You have finally found a decent manager abd think you are on top of the world.

You are out of touch with reality and have no idea what you are talking about. Your inaccurate assessment of Arsenal fans is not up to date.

Sure you will find delusional fans everywhere, but the vast majority of Arsenal supporters do not shy away from the fact that the club is still miles away from competing for the title, and even a top 4 finish seems unrealistic.

The reason why there is greater optimism these days is because at least the manager is very good and can take Arsenal up a notch IF he is backed by the board in the transfer market which has not happened yet.

The club has not been able to secure any of his midfield targets (Aouar, Partey, perhaps Coutinho) even though the midfield is seriously short of creativity and technical ability.

If Arsenal fans were delusional and overly optimistic and they would not be lashing out on the board for not giving Arteta the funds to make the required signings.

Agreed, we all know the problem stems from Kroenke.

Board has been poor as well, especially when we had Raul Sanllehi who splashed £70m+ on Pepe.

Raul was shady but he had long tentacles in the market and knew how to close deals. I am sure he would have managed to get Coutinho on loan this summer and would have managed to sign Aouar or Partey as well.

Edu and that Vinai guy seem clueless in the market.

Thank God for Villa. There's nothing better than seeing Liverpool get spanked. Couldn't quite believe it when I saw it. Some crazy results so far this season, but this one definitely takes the cake.

We won the league, they won one game. Sure be happy but what is there to celebrate, the season has just started.

I know dozens of Villa fans , annoying bunch but I do give them credit for taking their opportunties.

What a performance by Grealish vs Belgium - he’s going to make Villa a lot of money when he eventually gets sold to one of the big clubs.

England footballer Jack Grealish smelled of "intoxicating liquor" and was slurring his words after crashing his £80,000 Range Rover during the first coronavirus lockdown, a court has heard.

The Aston Villa captain has pleaded guilty to two charges, including one linked to the incident in March when his 4x4 hit two parked vehicles in Dickens Heath, Solihull, West Midlands.

Aston Villa have been forced to close their Bodymoor Heath training ground after a "significant" coronavirus outbreak at the club.

Villa say a "large number" of their first-team players and staff have tested positive and first-team training has been cancelled ahead of Friday's FA Cup tie at home to Liverpool.

Villa v LFC FA Cup 3rd Round coming up.

Shame Villa are playing the kids due to Covid. Should be an easy win for the Reds.

Prediction Villa 1 - 6 - LFC :)

Half Time

1-1

Good show by the Villa kids, lovely goal too. Can they hang on or even win this?

Arjan Raikhy, British Asian playing for Villa too.

Really good effort by the Villa kids, gave it all.

Funny to see an Asian coach of Villa running after Salah for his jersey.

Hope Villa players recover from Covid so they can continue their good run in the league.

Really proud of the boys ...Owen was chatting about Salah and Mane competing for hat tricks ..

We held our own for an hour ...Thiago though was just a cut above everyone on the pitch ...and our players being as young as they were spent after an hour ...

What’s even more positive is these boys haven’t played a match since mid-December with the academy sides having a break ...and three of our biggest prospects weren’t available as they were isolating ...

Spurs if the Prem are being consistent can’t go ahead...we have 9 positives and 3 injuries...we can’t field a team of 14 as per the rules...

Second half was always going to be a lot tougher due to the fitness of the youngsters, they are still growing. Proud moment for their parents, many of whom drove them to the groud but sadly werent able to watch live.

Im not a fan of cancelling or suspending any games but with so many out, it's a must. Villa also deserve to play with their strongest side as they have performed very well in the PL so far.

You should give Shaqiri more game time ...he offers you something different ...

I’m surprised btw that you’re not looking at centre backs...Williams is insanely slow...

In terms of cancelling games a precedent has been set ...I have no idea how this season is going to finish in time ...the fixture pileup is already ridiculous for the teams in Europe...

Aston Villa's Premier League game at home to Everton on Sunday has been postponed because of the ongoing Covid-19 issues at the club.

The Villa training ground remains closed after a coronavirus outbreak.

A Premier League statement said that a "significant number" of Villa players and staff remained in isolation.

It went on: "As a result, the Premier League board has agreed to Aston Villa's request to postpone their match on Sunday."

Villa, who already have three games in hand on some clubs in the league, are due to play Manchester City on Wednesday.

That game was originally scheduled to take place on the opening weekend of the season but was postponed because of City's progress in last season's Champions League.

One of the matches they have in hand - the game at home to Newcastle, which was postponed from 4 December after the Magpies' own coronavirus outbreak - has been rescheduled for Saturday, 23 January.

Villa's Covid-19 outbreak meant that no first-team players were available for the FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool last Friday.

The West Midlands club had to field a starting XI composed of seven under-23 players and four from the under-18s, and lost 4-1 at Villa Park.

Spirited effort from the young Villains the other day against the league champions, their parents must be so proud. Very unexpected.

Unfortunate the recent positive tests, I don’t think any team in the league should have to field their 2nd or youth teams, much rather have the league/games postponed to be honest especially during this period

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is expected to be out for another two weeks after suffering a setback in his comeback from injury.

The midfielder has missed seven Premier League games with a shin problem, as well as England's recent World Cup qualifying matches.

But Villa manager Dean Smith admitted Grealish had been rushed back "a little bit too quickly".

"No, he's not [fit]," said Smith, before Saturday's game at Liverpool.

"Myself and Jack were quite optimistic to get him back a bit sooner than he probably should and he's had a setback that will probably put him back a couple of weeks."

Grealish has scored six Premier League goals for Villa this season, adding 10 assists.

Smith continued: "He was really good in training, but he couldn't tolerate the loading. It's a loading injury and we have to de-load him over the next few weeks and get him back from there.

"We know it's not a long-term injury and he will be back.

"We all, Jack included, probably pushed him back a little bit too quickly. He wanted to get back, we wanted him to get back and he had a little setback."
