1st half the plan went really well...for all of Spurs shots most of them were from distance...their 4-4-2 diamond just didn't work...

2nd half they went to a flat 4-4-2 and our centre backs and full backs handled them well..

Spurs finally realised they could overrun us through the centre and went 4-2-3-1 through the centre when Eriksen came on and then they just got so much more dangerous...even then though they had to rely on a mistake from Jack for 2-1...

El Ghazi wasn't fully fit...him and McGinn will have better games possession wise (both had pass %s under 60)...

With Luiz and Nakamba to come in we'll actually have someone who can win the ball in midfield...and retain...Hourihane was just chasing shadows...

I'm positive knowing we can do better once our new signings are bedded in...

With Luiz one has to remember that Rodri was Peps plan B...he wanted Luiz...we have a baller on our hands...

Area where we are weak though is depth on the wings...and up front...its a big season for Davis who may have to fill in at times...

Wesley is most certainly not a Heskey...strong and physical yes...but his attributes are his link up play and passing...he'll score as many as he will assist...

Goals all over our team...Hourihane has a lovely left foot...McGinn and Jack will score goals...and Trezeguet will terrorise defences that aren't as good as Spurs...

Mings made no mistakes in our last game...him and Engels were excellent...problem was our midfield...

Get a better handle of us when we play a side like Bournemouth...

Villa dominated the game today without being dangerous. Two lapses in concentration and Bournemouth took control. Mistakes you can get away with in the Championship but not at PL level.

No goal threat from Villa, and fans already slagging Wesley off on Twitter as the new Heskey. You need goals to survive at this level, and Villa’s scattergun approach to recruitment (especially in the attacking positions) was always going to make this a long hard season.

Kevin MacDonald leaves Aston Villa after bullying investigation

Aston Villa's head of football development Kevin MacDonald has left the club following an investigation into allegations of bullying.

He had been reassigned to non-player-facing duties during the investigation.

Ex-midfielder Gareth Farrelly said MacDonald was "relentlessly negative" to him as a youth coach in the 1990s.

"Aston Villa wishes to apologise to all former players who were affected by behaviour which would not be tolerated by the club today," a statement said.

MacDonald, 58, a Double winner with Liverpool as a player in 1986, had twice been caretaker manager at Villa, including last season after Steve Bruce was sacked.

He was also Villa's assistant manager under Tim Sherwood and most recently the under-23s manager. He had a brief spell as manager at Swindon Town in 2013.

Former Aston Villa academy graduate and Republic of Ireland international Farrelly, now a qualified solicitor, told the Guardian last year MacDonald was "incredibly aggressive, with constant verbal and physical bullying".

The Villa statement added: "An investigation, carried out by barrister Jack Mitchell, has now concluded and the results delivered to the board.

"As the report forms part of an employee disciplinary process, the club is unable to provide details in public although copies of Mr Mitchell's investigation have been provided to the FA, Premier League and statutory authorities.

"Mr Mitchell appealed for individuals to come forward to give evidence and we are especially grateful to those former players who assisted him in his investigation.

"Our approach to safeguarding is now unrecognisable from the past."

Dean Smith says Aston Villa are facing the prospect of playing without at least two of their squad members due to the risk of coronavirus infection, should the Premier League season resume.

The Aston Villa boss revealed to The Football Show that one of his players is asthmatic and another has a vulnerable mother-in-law living with the family and there is a real possibility the team could return to training and matches without them.

"Everybody wants to get back into training but they also want to see what the medical protocols are first," said Smith. "There's a certain risk attached to the return to training for all players and I think they want to make sure they tick the boxes so it's safe to do so.

"We've got a player who is asthmatic, we've got a player whose mother-in-law is in remission and living with the family. You have to be very careful, certainly the transmission knows no boundaries.

"From what I'm told, we have to be led by the government at the moment. There's a lot of hypothetical questions out there at the moment but until we get the guidance from the government about how they want to move forward out of this lockdown there are a lot more questions than there are answers at this moment.

"The players' health and safety is paramount and if they're not comfortable to return then you have to return without them, when it's safe to do so. We have to listen to our players, we have to listen to their concerns. If the protocols say we can move forward then the ones who can do will do so."

Smith's season review
Villa sat second from bottom in the Premier League when the lockdown forced the suspension of the season. However, victory in their game in hand on the teams around them would lift them out of the relegation zone.

Smith says Villa are eager to get back to playing when it is safe to do so to complete their campaign and he has been using the pause in the season to analyse how his side have performed so far and what they can do to improve in the future.

"I've been having regular chats with the coaching staff about how we adapt to the new situation, what it might look like," he said. "But it's also given me time to review and reflect on what we've done so far.

"I've managed to do a video chat with each individual player and review their season so far, how they think they've done and how I think they've done, and we're having regular group chats now.

"We have a once-a-week chat with the players, talking about little things and they watch a couple of games and review back to us. We've had to be a little bit innovative in what we do but the compliance of the players has been excellent.

"Nobody wants to have this pandemic but it has given us the opportunity to review where we're at and reflect on what we've done so far.

"I'd never get a chance during the season to have a chat with my players for an hour, just on their season so far, what they need to improve on, how I feel they've done. Or to go back and watch every single game.

"The season is fast-paced, you finish one game and you're already planning for the next game and this gives us that chance to just pause, reset, reflect and hopefully move forward and be better for it."

Aston Villa will play Premier League football next season after a draw at West Ham was enough to ensure they escaped relegation on the final day of the league campaign.

Hometown hero and captain Jack Grealish looked to have sealed a win for Villa with a powerful strike in the 84th minute, but Andriy Yarmolenko's deflected leveller soon after made it a nervy finale for the visitors.

They hung on though and the point, coupled with a defeat for Watford at Arsenal, ensured Villa's survival and consigned the Hornets to the Championship next season along with Bournemouth, whose win at Everton was not enough.

It caps an impressive end to the season for Dean Smith's side, who were seven points from safety two weeks ago but then put together their first four-game unbeaten run of 2019-20 to survive.

It was a game of few chances at the London Stadium, although the in-form Michail Antonio would have made Villa's afternoon a lot more tense had he not blazed a shot wide with just the keeper to beat in the first half.

It's not even that tbh it's for us to appease players of his calibre who still have a bit to offer, we had him on loan as well so a short term thing but wouldn't mind if we have him back, I certainly hope we don't find ourselves in this position again, don't want to be a relegation football team, they do have a bit of cash which is a positive, how we utilise it will be key

Thanks buddy, in a strange way have become even more passionate these past few years when we dropped out the PL but they have desperately needed that support more then ever, playing the highest level of football is often taken for granted and also in arguably the toughest league in the world. Definitely happy to see WBA, not so sure about Leeds We've fired one of our directors who was handling how the moneys were utilised this season, I just feel we need a 'manager' opposed to head coach, don't know if we will see Grealish and Dean next season but they have been a tremendous duo in the circumstances

Overall a satisfactory season just about, we had some early blows with injuries and the team didn't have a lot of time to build that chemistry but they pulled together in the end

i dont think Grealish is good enough to be a starter for a top 4 team right now. He is very skilful and exciting to watch for sure but certain aspects of his game where you need to put in the hard yards leave a lot to be desired.

He makes too many mistakes imo and loses the ball a lot which is quite frustrating and may be fine with Villa but not a United or Chelsea let alone Liverpool or City. He is a great highlights player but the inconsistent parts of his game would be magnified a lot lot more when he is playing for a team competing for top honors. Ofcourse there is the flip argument that if he moves to a top club then these other less flashy aspects of his game may develop and he cuts out the mistakes to become more well-rounded.

Personally I think the best course for his career is to stay put at his childhood club as they progress through the seasons to become a regular top 10 club with the right investment. That would be great for his legacy.

No need of mocking them. They were promoted after 3 years and barely survived relegation last season. Of course they are going to celebrate this victory like a trophy, it is among the greatest individual PL wins ever.

Fans always go overboard when they achieve something big especially after a long time.

Last season, Liverpool fans acted as if they were the first team ever to walk the league, and in spite of all the noise they made, they couldn’t match Man City’s 2017-18 season and ended up with more defeats and less points.

The players were doing photoshoots with the PL and UCL trophy together, even though they had won the UCL in the previous season and were already dumped out by Atletico when they were holding both trophies together for the cameras.

If someone sees those photos without context, they would think that Liverpool did the double.

So please don’t mock Villa fans. All fans go overboard with celebrations within their capacity.

Raul was shady but he had long tentacles in the market and knew how to close deals. I am sure he would have managed to get Coutinho on loan this summer and would have managed to sign Aouar or Partey as well.

We held our own for an hour ...Thiago though was just a cut above everyone on the pitch ...and our players being as young as they were spent after an hour ...

What’s even more positive is these boys haven’t played a match since mid-December with the academy sides having a break ...and three of our biggest prospects weren’t available as they were isolating ...

Spurs if the Prem are being consistent can’t go ahead...we have 9 positives and 3 injuries...we can’t field a team of 14 as per the rules...

Aston Villa's Premier League game at home to Everton on Sunday has been postponed because of the ongoing Covid-19 issues at the club.

The Villa training ground remains closed after a coronavirus outbreak.

A Premier League statement said that a "significant number" of Villa players and staff remained in isolation.

It went on: "As a result, the Premier League board has agreed to Aston Villa's request to postpone their match on Sunday."

Villa, who already have three games in hand on some clubs in the league, are due to play Manchester City on Wednesday.

That game was originally scheduled to take place on the opening weekend of the season but was postponed because of City's progress in last season's Champions League.

One of the matches they have in hand - the game at home to Newcastle, which was postponed from 4 December after the Magpies' own coronavirus outbreak - has been rescheduled for Saturday, 23 January.

Villa's Covid-19 outbreak meant that no first-team players were available for the FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool last Friday.

The West Midlands club had to field a starting XI composed of seven under-23 players and four from the under-18s, and lost 4-1 at Villa Park.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is expected to be out for another two weeks after suffering a setback in his comeback from injury.

The midfielder has missed seven Premier League games with a shin problem, as well as England's recent World Cup qualifying matches.

But Villa manager Dean Smith admitted Grealish had been rushed back "a little bit too quickly".

"No, he's not [fit]," said Smith, before Saturday's game at Liverpool.

"Myself and Jack were quite optimistic to get him back a bit sooner than he probably should and he's had a setback that will probably put him back a couple of weeks."

Grealish has scored six Premier League goals for Villa this season, adding 10 assists.

Smith continued: "He was really good in training, but he couldn't tolerate the loading. It's a loading injury and we have to de-load him over the next few weeks and get him back from there.

"We know it's not a long-term injury and he will be back.

"We all, Jack included, probably pushed him back a little bit too quickly. He wanted to get back, we wanted him to get back and he had a little setback."
