Umar Akmal : Mega Discussion Thread

We do have champions trophy right after Srilanka tour. So it will be good idea to send couple of players from Pak A to play ODI series in Srilanka. Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz and Fahad Masood (he looked good in that RBS 20/20 tournament..good ODI and 20/20 bowler) will be my pick.

He has done enough to merit a call up for me. He needs to be on the plane to Sri Lanka for the ODI's and T-20's.

young fellow, I believe he is a middle order batsman, why cant he at this early stage of his career try out as an opener.........knowing if he succeeds he will have a better chance of been called up early enough for the national team.

Let him remain as a middle order otherwise he will end up as a joke like our other openers.

Temptation to replace Manzoor is very high, but in reality he should finish the tour and then be considered for the next series.

Ive been watching this boy rack up some big scores againat the Aussie A.

Has anyone seen the boy bat? I would love to catch some highlights of him batting.

I know he's done well, but i think he should continue his development with the A side. Really let him mature and then bring him into the full team.

I don't want to get ahead of myself (which a lot of us Pakistanis tend to do) by saying we should put him in the team immediately .... as the previous poster said I'd love to see some highlights of him batting to get an idea of what he's all about ... no doubt he's doing well: 2 test centuries and 1 odi century but I'm gonna take everything with a pinch of salt because we've been excited about young players in the past and they haven't really delivered .... I'm more interested on your views on wahab riaz ... when i saw him first play for us he wasn't all that ... is he getting better ... do you think he's good enough for the national team

I have seen him bat has all the shots in the book was a bit too impulsive but that can be curbed with exp unless your name is :afridi :iamlegend .I agree we have been exited before about other young stars but to smash hundreds on your first trip to AUstralia is something that no one has accomplished.

yeah that's fair enough ... well done to him to achieve that ..... with Pakistan I'm always hoping for the next big thing ... a miandad or an Inzi but as i said i'm not gonna get over excited ... lets hope he continues to improve ... lets hope he can become a competent test level batsman for the future ... i mean he is only 18

this guy MUST be in the team...we have found a viable replacement for Malik IMO

Talent with him is no issue as I said he virtually plays every stroke combined with a pretty good technique now the issue is temperament which remains to be seen

him for Misbah, Alam for Malik and then Shezad for :butt and we are sorted. :yk

lol, disagree about Salman, but the rest sounds A-OK

Another great knock from Umar Akmal!! This guy is really someone to watch out for.. 3 hundreds down under..this is truly amazing!! Keep it up, Akmal Jr.

I really pray that he has the tempremant to make it at the top ... really hope he isnt a flash in the pan like Imran nazir ... being able to score at his speed and having the brains to know when and what to play and when and what not to play is a lethal combination ... lets hope he has that attribute

you people should have seen him in the recently concluded RBSt20

You can say he plays just like kamran,Brilliant square cut.And when hitting plays straight.

I honestly dont care what he's like at T20 i just hope he has the ability to play at the highest level i.e test cricket

He wasnt that impressive in that tournament to be honest but it looks like he has finally sorted his weakness (i-e Short pitch stuff) and his temperament is slowly building there I guess.

He was played all the strokes but just like Ahmed Shezad trying to be over aggressive hence ending up slogging a few.

No I mean he doesnt looked compact at all and had serious problems against unknown medium pacer Saad Altaf. (No he is not my brother or relative)

Mark 'The Ear' Oberhardt gives the lowdown on sport

YOU might remember The Ear mentioning the name Umar Akmal three weeks ago as one to watch during Pakistan A's cricket series in Townsville and Brisbane. The teenager whacked three tons and a half-century from his first six innings in the series. I repeat, he will be a star in the Test series later this summer.

Some lofty praise there for the younger Akmal.

If Malik and Misbah continue to fail he may well have a spot in the side sooner rather than later.

Malik is a must for one day matches.

Sachin Tendulkar struggled against Cronje and Razzaq, Yousuf struggles against Pathan and Herath. He has handled Bollinger, Tait and Krejza with ease on their tracks, personally I find his technique ok he does not struggle behind the wicket ala Butt or Malik nor does he look like a big LBW candidate like Fawad Alam or Misbah yes he was not compact but then he was playing 20/20 you are bound to be more loose in that format.

Xoib how would you describe his technique? I mean is there any batsman that he reminds you of technically?

If Kamran Akmal had 100% concetration on his batting then he would have batted like him looks more tight then Kami despite what Saad says:p since I am discounting the ugly hoicks he tried to play every now and then, when he went for the proper strokes he looked extreamly pretty and efficent . He stays still in his stance with no shuffle has all the strokes in the world. In one Saeed Ajmal over he hit 4 boundries one was a late cut, cover drive, pull over mid wicket and a dance down the track to the long off boundary.

Hope that gives you a better picture.

I think if Akmal junior continues to score runs at A team level it will just be a matter of time hopefully be he gets a call up.

i thought initially, are you joking with Pak selecters ! but thanks to Qadir and now Bari we seem to have actually shown some sense, it will be another matter though if he actually gets a game or just carries the bags of players who aren;t actually fit to lace his boots

Akmal jr. has been selected for the ODI series and is also in the 30 probables for the Champion's Trophy. Lets see if he gets a game in the ODI series or not!

Currently on 87 from 58 balls against SL A. This lad should definately play in the ODIs, he is in such a good form so I hope younis make som tough decisions!

103 runs from 76 balls, with 7 4s and 3 6s. What an innings and what a beast!!

waqar younis says his brother plays with umar akmal and told him how good this guy is

rameez raja saying : he is built like a tank, i shook his hand

temperament and technique

good reports from everyone including senior players and A tour management

so glad to see him in the 11 today...hope this kid shines and brings happniess on all our faces....looking forward to a 100 by him....inshallah he will do good as he is in great difficult situation at this time....21-3 and he comes to bat with younus so far doing good...

well, he showed glimpses of what he was made of. like the commentators were saying, he looked like kamran akmal with better technique. he certainly is worht being excited about.

I'm glad he got a chance today.

18 was probably what the team management was expecting for MoYo and Misbah combined so it was good to give the youngsters a go.

he was looking a lot better than younis khan i really think younis khan lack of ability to rotate striked broke his concentration

Umar Akmal...the future of Pakistan Middle order batting...

Considering U Akmal determination and attaching batting in the 3rd ODI....he seems to be a long term solution of 1 spot in the middle order batting......

50 in only second game

Extremely deserving of the praise.

He has perfectly played this innings. He certainly has a future in Pakistan cricket. Perhaps we finally have found someone good enough to step into our middle order.

Umar Akmal Perfect replacement for Misbah - Finally

Thannks umar Akmal for the excellent controlled ands sensible innings today

Definitely a replacement for Misbah Ul Haq or shall I say he provides some competition for Misbah.

I am pretty sure Younis will go back to Misbah sooner or later cause that's the way it is unfortunately.

This kid has a future in this team if he plays like he did today.

Mohammad Yousuf can enjoy his retirement now.

Alright let's not get that excited.

Mohammad Yousuf should still be back in this team although perhaps Akmal is his future replacement.

Amazing shot selection and temperament, which is probably what differentiates him from his brother. Just a word of caution though, there have been innumerable young Pakistani batsmen who have started their careers with a sparkling innings only to drift into the wilderness. So let's hope Umar can make it count.

I think more like Misbah and Malik should be concerned (not Yousuf) because we seem to have a backup for them.
He did everything right in this inning except the last shot where he really got carried away.

Nope. Moyo should only be played in tests. YK's team selection has been spot on

I was very impressed by the way Umar akmal played today and hopefully he will get a long run in the ODI team and stake a long term claim in the side.

This kid is certainly talented - im so glad he got himself a decent score because otherwise the vultures would have been out in force

I murmured, "Watch out...," after his six against Murali. I knew Murali was going to trick him up.

In the words of Waqar bhai:

"You Beauty!"

That just showed he is very young otherwise rest of his inning was very mature.

I guess YK was right he is young the way he palyed his last shot

well played Umar. I wish he had waited two more balls to let Murli complete his 10th over but inexperience and rush of blood got him.

Can't think of many youngsters that have excited me in recent years, but I'm enjoying watching this kid bat, early days yet there's a long way to go, but there's definitely hope.

102 Runs From 72 Balls With 4 Sixes!!! Real Dynamite!!!

Have to say their is a buzz definatley when hes out in middle batting!

I think hes booked himself into team fot CT and probably for the series against Kiwis and Aussies as well.

I sometime think that do you even have a heart? If you are Muslim then you are not suppose to be like this, after all he is your brother (elder or younger).

Did he steal your money or something?

I hope he also deserve to be in the squad. I am saying because he didn't score his first hundred in Pakistan against Zimbabwe or Bangladesh. he scored hundred against one of the best bowlers so Mash ALLAH what an innings. Another thing I would like to mention is that he also scored tons of runs in Australia against Australia A so he is real talent. Unless like some players who just scored runs in Pakistan only .

By pakistan I am basically refering to flat tracks

Im worried that he is going to be messed around by being push up and down the order
I don't think it will have any effect on Umer Akmal. the way he played is what a number 3 batsmen does so....no worries

He does seem to have all the shots so would be comfortable in various positions BUT i think its best he gets a settled spot in the side - he should really bat where Misbah batted today, that would be ideal

Ideally he will get a settled spot in the side and be allowed to blossom.

Number 5/6 spot seems ideal for the lad.
