[VIDEOS] "I am hoping I will be given consistent chances to prove myself in ODIs" : Hussain Talat

Hussain Talat’s aggressive style of batting has won him many plaudits when it comes to the shortest form of the game. He has represented Pakistan 14 times in T20Is scoring a total of 371 runs at a strike rate of 120.06 and has featured in 1 ODI. His record with PSL side Islamabad United where he has amassed a total of 402 runs over the three seasons is one that makes him a key player for the franchise.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Talat spoke about his record in T20Is for Pakistan, his aspirations to represent Pakistan in more ODIs and looked forward to selection for the Pakistan squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and subsequently for the T20 World Cup in 2020.

PakPassion.net: Would you say that it is a loss in form that has prevented you from progressing in your international career?

Hussain Talat: This is not entirely true as I performed well in the domestic season last year and I have so far represented Pakistan in 14 T20Is. In the T20I series against South Africa which preceded this year’s PSL, I played three games in which I had scores of 40 and 55 in the first two matches whilst I did not do too well in the last game. So, I feel that overall my performance in the Twenty20 format has been very good with a T20I average of about 29. I feel that I have contributed very well in every series that I have played for Pakistan. Obviously, I would have liked to play in more ODIs as I have had only one opportunity to represent my country so far which was in South Africa. The ICC World Cup 2019 was the next major assignment for Pakistan and since I had not played many One-Day games, I was not considered for the squad. I was also told by the team management that the sole T20I game to be played in England would feature only the players selected for the World Cup squad so I did not play in that, otherwise I have participated in 14 of the 20 T20I games that Pakistan has played since my debut and I am hopeful that given my past performances for Pakistan, I will be named in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka.

PakPassion.net: Do you feel you could have done better in the T20I series against South Africa?

Hussain Talat: I feel satisfied with my performances because where I scored 40 and 55 those were tough conditions to play in. My only regret is that our team lost the series and my good scores could not help in that respect.

PakPassion.net: Does being marked as a T20 specialist bother you and do you wish to make a name for yourself in ODIs as well?

Hussain Talat: I am very much committed to making a name for myself in ODIs for Pakistan. As we know that Shoaib Malik has retired from ODIs and so there is a vacant position which I feel I can fill. My goal is to play for Pakistan in ODIs and I will work hard towards achieving that. In T20Is, I was given a proper chance to showcase my skills with a good batting position at number 3. In the same way, I am hoping that I will be given an opportunity to shine at a good batting position in ODIs and that I will be given consistent chances to prove myself. This is important in international cricket as it’s a high-pressure environment so a proper chance is necessary for a new player to perform and I am hoping that this will be the case for me as well.

PakPassion.net: Are you looking forward to selection for the Pakistan squad for T20 World Cup in 2020?

Hussain Talat: First of all, I am very proud of the fact that Pakistan is ranked number one in T20Is as I feel that this is a great achievement. We have held this position since the time I was first selected for the Pakistan squad after PSL 3 and it’s a matter of great honour for me that all the T20I series I have played for Pakistan has seen them perform well. It is my goal to perform well in all the upcoming T20I series so that I make myself a good selection option for the T20 World Cup 2020.

PakPassion.net: How do you feel about the new domestic structure introduced by the PCB?

Hussain Talat: I am looking forward to being part of this new structure which has a reduced number of sides. I feel that the intensity of competition in this new structure will be very high, and this will make for an enjoyable experience for all players. I have spoken to other players at the NCA during training and they all have a similar view. We all think that due to the rise in the level of competition brought on by these changes, we will need to work very hard and perform to the best of our abilities. Everyone I have spoken to is looking forward to putting in that extra effort to perform well in the upcoming season.

PakPassion.net: Will the standard of cricket also improve in domestic cricket due to the recently announced reforms?

Hussain Talat: From what I understand of the changes being made, the standard of cricket will definitely become better. For one thing, the use of the Kookaburra ball which is the same ball used in Pakistan international home assignments should make a big difference in the quality of games that will be played. Of course, we will be able to judge things better once the season starts with the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

PakPassion.net: Are you still contracted with Islamabad United in the PSL?

Hussain Talat: As far as I know, nothing has changed in terms of my association with Islamabad but then no retentions have been announced yet. I am hopeful that based on my previous performances, I will stay with Islamabad United in the next season of the PSL.

PakPassion.net: Does the prospect of playing more games in Pakistan in the next PSL excite you?

Hussain Talat: This is a hugely important development for Pakistan cricket. What this means is that PSL games will be played in grounds in our country where we normally play domestic cricket. It will be great for players and fans alike to watch PSL games in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad. This will be great news for our spectators and also for our future players who will be inspired by watching such high-quality cricket at home grounds.

PakPassion.net: The absence of 10 Sri Lankan cricketers in the upcoming series in Pakistan must be very disappointing for you?

Hussain Talat: I, like all well-wishers of cricket, am of course very disappointed by the decision of the 10 Sri Lankan cricketers to not come to Pakistan to play the ODI and T20I series. All of us would like to see international cricket restored in Pakistan and would love to see international cricketers visit this beautiful country of ours. In my younger days, I was inspired to play for Pakistan as I watched England play matches in Faisalabad or India play in Karachi. Similarly, watching international teams on home soil would be a great experience for aspiring youngsters and would encourage them to play for Pakistan. I remember that it used to be a huge occasion when teams from other countries would visit Pakistan and I really used to enjoy those matches. For those worried about the security situation in Pakistan, let me point out that we have had PSL matches being played in Pakistan for the last three years. Security, in my view, is of a top-level, the arrangements and facilities are of a high-quality as well so I am hoping that international sides will come and play matches in Pakistan.

PakPassion.net: Are you excited about the appointment of Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis as Head Coach and Bowling Coach respectively?

Hussain Talat: The tremendous experience that Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis bring to the table is unbeatable. We were lucky to have Waqar Younis as our bowling coach at Islamabad United and we all learned a lot from him during that time. Misbah was our captain for three seasons and was the winning captain on two occasions so we have seen his impressive leadership and skills at close quarters. Hopefully we will be able to make good use of the immense experience that both these legendary players have for our benefit and Pakistan cricket will move on to greater heights due to their appointments.

PakPassion.net: What is the reason for the recent rise of youngsters such as Babar Azam and yourself and does that fill you with hope for the future of Pakistan cricket?

Hussain Talat: I would say that the PSL has had a lot to do with the emergence of good quality young players in Pakistan cricket. Players like Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf and I are all products of the emerging category of cricketers in the PSL. The fact is that a tournament featuring international players and one that is broadcast around the world has given international exposure to our youngsters which has been very beneficial. The emergence of talented young cricketers from the PSL is a great sign for the future of the game and of course for Pakistan cricket.

PakPassion.net: Over time, you seemed to have changed from a bowling all-rounder into a batting all-rounder?

Hussain Talat: To be honest, I have always considered myself to be nothing more than a proper batsman. I started my cricket as an opening batsman and would also play at the number 3 or 4 position too. But I also had a desire to bowl medium-fast, however my father always insisted that I try my hand at leg-spin as in his view fast-bowling was a difficult task. So, during the first year of my career I used to bowl leg-spin in club cricket games. I only started to bowl medium-fast when I started playing at the Under-16 level but in terms of batting, I have always been a batsman who would come in at the top-order of the line-up.

PakPassion.net: What are your aims for the upcoming domestic and international season?

Hussain Talat: I am very excited about the upcoming season and have been preparing for the past 3-4 months at the NCA to get myself ready. I have been practising hard at the NCA with the coaches to work on any areas of my game that needed to be refined. There is no let-up in my preparations for this season and the only aim in my mind is to put in good performances in the upcoming season and I hope and pray that I will be successful in my aims.

Feels like a lot of self denial in his replies.

Should focus on actually improving

although i liked him but he isnt going to play long if he continues to play like he played in SA... he would disappear real soon.....

He doesn’t look too bad for our pitiful standards. I think he can cement a place in the ODI/T20 middle-order if given ample opportunities.

Yes, lets include him, so depressed folks like you can keep posting about how bad our ODI batting is.

Not included in 20 probables for the SL LOI Series - in his interview he seemed to be all set for that.

Selfies with fans today

Another poor outing for Hussain Talat - just 6 where 2 other batsmen scored 100s

Not the best of starts for Talat this season.

Seems to be struggling for form.

A duck for Talat in the first game of the ongoing National T20 - things not going according to plan for him

77* off 51 for today in NatT20 for Balochistan - good innings.

2/25 in 3 overs in the final of the Nat T20 Cup

Kid has talent. Needs to just tighten up his technique a bit and also get better against spin. He had a future if he’s committed and handled well. Looking forward to watching highlights of his recent batting

He's a good prospect.

Was groomed and picked by Misbah in Islamabad United. I'm sure he's still on Misbah's radar and can be considered in future.

Meanwhile he should work on getting consistent and shot range plus shot selection.

Do you think he is comfortable against pace?

Talat would look more comfortable in the 50 over format with his run-a-ball knocks than in T20s where his lack of powerhitting abilities was exposed.

Doing well today on 71* in Round 6 of QEA

Would definitely be an upgrade in T20s over Haris Sohail.

Another who faded away after impressing.

Happens too often in Pakistan cricket. Is it the players mentality, overconfidence, fitness issues? Whatever it is, it's a worrying trend.

A couple of wickets and batting well today in the National T20 Cup.

2/38 and now 25 off 15 - good game for Talat in the National T20 Cup vs KP

Got two wickets and good knock of 38 from 22 but, should have carried on and finished it for his team. In such a tough competition where a lot of top players are playing, you need to do more to be recognized I think. He is a good player but needs some big match winning knocks in his career to increase his overall stature. Still early in the tournament though.

I fink even when he played for pakistan he did ok but never really won them a match

He is a mediocre player at best. A kind of bits and pieces. He still does not have a stronger suit , claims batting to be his strength , but does not show ability to finish games , as required by lower middle order

He is a rare middle order batsman who actually bowls at a very good pace. I reckon he can be an asset specially in the test team.

He really needs to start scoring tons of runs though to prove his metal.

He is decent cricketer but definitely not a test class.

Bigger teams will eat him alive (both in batting & bowling).

I’ve always rated this guy.
However he should have been playing odi’s and then tests and not T20 cricket.

He’s got great potential in those two formats

Hussain Talat is 58* off 34 at the moment and could win the game for Southern Punjab

Out for 62 off 36 - should have stayed to the end and won the game for SP

He has always been a good player. Had a tough PSL last year.
He is being used out of position at no.6 or no.7. He should ideally bat in top 5. A more than useful bowler as well. Could well be the allrounder we can accomodate easily.

He was taken to hospital last night for scans after the ball hit him on the throat.

The scans have come back all-clear.

He’s a good strong batsman... who just doesn’t have the gift of timing in terms of big shots.

He’s kind of like Azhar in that resort, they just can’t play those big shots. Compared to the likes of smallish guys like Hafeez etc who can just time the ball effortlessly over the ropes.

On some days he really gets bogged down which does cost his team. Not sure if its some mental block as he does have decent shots all around but, he doesnt have much game awareness by the looks of it. He was dropped from Pak T20 side as well after his 40-50 poorly paced runs in loosing cause when Pak was chasing a reasonably big total vs SA in T20.

He has decent skills but needs to work on this issues as no team can afford that in modern day LOIs.

He can be Stonis type player for us. Don't know if it's a good or bad thing. For sure better than garbage Faheem

Couldn't watch the match but I just checked the scorecard.

While chasing 146, he scored 12 (22) and his team lost by 5 runs only.

Very poor innings.

He needs to bat in the top 4 hes no use down the order doesnt have much chance playing for pakistan in top 4 due to similar players

You are right. For me, he is more of a ODI player and even there he should bat at 4. He is not a type of player who just goes to the pitch and starts hitting.

Currently there are very few chance to get in top 4 of Pakistan for him. Babar, Haider, Fakhar & Imam are already there.

We badly need few players who can hit big in the lower middle order (5,6,7) Shadab is there but he is also more of a middle order player. Imad can hit few but he is almost 32 officially.

He is more of an odi player than t20 Another case of players picked in the wrong format

He wouldve been pretty good i believe at 4/5 as someone who can bowl a few overs of medium pace too

Definitely but I dont think hes ganna get a chance any time soon thou in amy format

I like him as a player. I can see him having a good career for us if he is given consistent chances. Think he should concentrate on his batting. Don't see much in his bowling.

Hussain Talat 59* (36) today vs Central Punjab

I really think his batting is more suited to the longer version of the game. There are not many decent Pakistani batsmen who bowl at good medium pace.

Fighting a lone hand now Hussain Talat

59* off 31

Fantastic 53* (54) so far from Talat for Southern Punjab today vs Northern. Has hit 7 fours and 2 sixes so far.

Double century for talat.
I hope he scores heavily in this season and then maybe he can become a handy test cricketer and we can slot him at No 6.

How is Faheem Ashraf getting a spot ahead of Talat? It not only unfair to Talat but it’s frustrating for us fans as well.

Talat is a proper batsmen who has been extremely hard done by so far.

Talat at 7 following Rizwan can be really solid but he needs to bowl more and with more skills to be a 5 bowling option in test cricket

If he goes on to score well and get runs. He can slot in the No.6 for our Test team. Him going to NZ with Pakistan Shaheens will help push his case. He just needs to score now.

Hussain Talat has been hard done by. For our batting standards, he definitely makes the cut 10 out of 10 times. We give 60 odd ODIs to Asad Shafiq but hardly any to Hussain Talat.

The thing I believe that has gone against him is the fact that he bowls as well and selectors view him as an all rounder. Which he's not. His bowling isn't good enough. Had he just called himself a batsman, he'd be in the team for sure. It wouldn't be bad for him if he just ends his bowling and treat himself as a batsman.

253 from 310 balls is just outstanding, no other way to describe it. Can't select him off of one game, but if he keeps this form the whole tournament he'll give the selectors a headache.

I think the t20 performance alone in the National t20 cup merited selection in my view.

Hussain, playing his 41st first-class match, clubbed 33 fours and six sixes in a 310-ball 253.

He occupied the crease for over five hours and reached his century from 149 balls with 14 fours and two sixes. His double-century came off 237 balls with 28 fours and four sixes.

There isn't space for him in the top order where he seems to prefer to bat. Though, in ODIs, I think he can compete with Khushdil Shah and Iftikhar for the #6 position. He can bat here now as it seems he's developed the power game he was lacking before.
