Injuries and Bhuvi's reputation of being a better death bowler has meant he has been underbowled over his career.
 
This thread is as underrated as him. Shami should be playing ahead bhuvneshwar in odis for worldcup.

Will play ahead of Bhuvi, problem is he is good test bowler also, abd injury prone too, so he is rested quite often in normal odi series which is good for his fitness.
But in odi world cup he will play ahead of Bhuvi
 
India's best pacer if you consider wicket taking ability.
Only in death overs he fails to keep runs flow down.
 
Happy he's come back strong just in time for the WC. Should make for a strong pair with the redoubtable Bumrah.
 
Md shami has this "wicket taking" mentality. Dare i say has the same mentality of some of 90s Pak bowlers. He has a plan in place every over instead of trying to just hit the length hoping to get a wicket.

He will be back till WC.
 
He is a very good bowler in ODIs and good enough in tests. He is not anything special though like Bumrah.

In recent years, Ishant has been a bigger deal than Shami in tests. I have seen Shami not being able to keep up the pressure at times but he is definitely a very good bowler to have in his own right.

Mohammed Shami, the India fast bowler, credited management and the coaches, both at the Indian team and the ones at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, for helping him rediscover his confidence.

Shami was India's second-highest wicket-taker at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015, where his 17 scalps helped India bowl out the opposition seven successive times leading up to the semi-final.

Injury subsequently cast him on the sidelines, even as new, young fast bowlers emerged in the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. After the World Cup semi-final loss to Australia, Shami did not play one-day cricket for two years. It was a period marked by weight gain and a struggle for rhythm.

Shami has since put those issues behind. He is now back in top shape, is once again a regular in India's ODI squad, and is primed to go at the 2019 World Cup, having been named in the 15-man squad that was announced on Monday, 15 April. "In the last 18 months, I have continuously worked on my fitness and have been constantly trying to improve my game, [and] on what will be better for my team," he said on the sidelines of the IPL in Mohali.

"Yes, I was a bit heavy after my injury and didn't play ODIs for an extended time, but I have played ODIs recently. Especially in the last six months, there have been some outstanding changes in my life. I am happy with whatever I have achieved. I lost so much of weight, my body has that flow now and the rhythm, I feel, is similar to when I started [my career]. I will try to maintain the same rhythm in the future for the World Cup.

"There's a lot of difference [with my bowling] when compared to, say three years back. I have done a lot of hard work. I've worked with the coaches, and the confidence that I got with the Indian team, backing me when I was trying to improve my fitness levels, the management, the NCA - they all backed me with all their heart. I was also dedicated to take on the fitness challenge in front of me. I accepted that and the result is now in front of you."

Apart from issues with fitness, Shami has also had to deal with personal problems. He even had to take a break from the 2018 Indian Premier League after suffering a head injury in a road accident. But after spending another year out of the ODI team, Shami has gone back to his wicket-taking ways since returning to the side in October last year. He is Kings XI Punjab's highest wicket-taker in the IPL this season, with 10 wickets in eight matches.

"I'm very happy that I have got a second chance in a World Cup," he said. "As far as performance is concerned, they way I had performed in 2015, how I approached it with confidence, I am hoping that there's an increased confidence in me. And whatever confidence that I have, in terms of my performance in the last seven-eight months, I want to carry that confidence and put my best foot forward for my team."

With India's players up for a full grind, with the IPL season followed immediately by the World Cup, workload management has been a frequently broached subject. But Shami felt the IPL offered ideal simulation to be mentally prepared to deal with pressure at the marquee event.

"Playing these matches [in the IPL] help in terms of fitness and mental preparation," he said. "It's a challenging tournament before the World Cup and it is very helpful in the preparation, mentally and physically."

Shami has to be in the playing XI. It does not swing in England in ODIs beyond the first 3-5 overs making Kumar's medium pace absolute cannon fodder. Shami can crank it up if needed.
 
There are days when Shami is literally unplayable on any surface. He actually intimidates batsmen with his pace and sharp bouncers.

But then there are days when he looks totally uninterested, bowling mid to late 130s. That's not good enough and I am not sure about his ability to turn it on at will.
 
In IPL he is bowling in mid 140s. He seems to have regained peak fitness.
 
He has to start in the WC. He has been brilliant with the white ball in the last few months.

Shami should obviously start in playing eleven. He was our best bowler in last WC. He is in rhythm. He is fast. And he takes wickets.

Bumrah and Shami will start along with 2 wrist spinner's. If needed and if weather is too English then bhuvi can play for a spinner.

Management made him sit at he bench and he finally gets a chance after Bhuvi got injured.

Bhuvi is being very lucky to play ahead of Shami , because he's somewhat of a better batsman. Have mentioned several times on this forum, Shami Vs Bhuvi record gulf is just too deep. Shami has almost 2 wickets per game while Bhuvi has almost 1 wkt per game.
 
You got to play Shami. i would rest maybe rest him before the semis and unleash him on NZ/England.
 
Everyone knows he is and out and out and wicket taker. Closes I could relate to the wicket taking mentality of past pak bowlers (not the current one). He has single goal in mind. Taking wickets. One reason is he rarely misses the stumps like old pak bowlers from 90s as against current crop who missed the stumps 87% in the India match. Two reasons he plays ahead of Shami is 1) batting 2) Bhuvi is decent in English conditions.

Don't pay attention to him. It was not soft. His first ball of the last over went for a 4, AFG needing 12 off 5 - which is doable in this age for sure. The rest his history.

All the articles I am reading are hailing Shami as the hero, but questioning why Bhumrah won MOM.
 
A very good LO bowler. Injuries hampered his development slightly but he has come back from it.

Good bowler. Bowled good pace.

Unless the pitch looks like it will seam miles, or there are overcast conditions, I would go with Shami over Bhuvi.

Nabi wicket was crucial. After that he just had to aim at the wickets which he did. He was bowling to tailenders of the worst batting lineup in world cricket. That bumrah over where he got 2 was better than anything shami did all game

Bowled pretty well yesterday.
 
Have been saying for years now that Bhuvi - Bumrah - Pandya is an unreliable pace attack.

Yes, Bhuvi has started doing well off late but for most parts, he was lacklustre.

So too much depended on Bumrah.

Now with Shami on, it's better for India.

Yes, I know this weakens the batting but the pace attack looks strong with just Pandya being the weak link (and even he has the knack of getting wickets).

Bhuvi in the team looks good psychologically but Shami is the better & safer option.

As for weak batting, the management should have planned for it by testing the right people so that middle order wasn't so weak.

Bhuvi alone can't make much of a difference with the bat barring the rare occasion.
 
I think he has got the best Sean position in the world right now. So as long as ball is hard and new it hits on seam and causes issues for batsmen. Hope he carries his form for few more years
 
He is a class bowler, picked up 8 wickets from 2 matches. I will pick him over Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
 
He is way better than B Kumar in ODI cricket. I am not sure why B Kumar has always been preferred over him.

Bhuvi for batting cushion. Anyone who followed India recently would know Shami infact outbowled even Bumrah at times.
 
Mohammed Shami knows better than most just how devastating a batsman Chris Gayle can be, and the Indian quick used some inside information to strike the decisive blow in victory at Old Trafford.

Shami has enjoyed a dream return to the Indian side, following up his hat-trick against Afghanistan with figures of 4/16 in the 125-run victory over the West Indies.

That success leaves India just one win away from the semi-finals, while the Windies are out of the running to make the final four.

And it was the wicket of Gayle, Shami’s Kings XI Punjab teammate in the IPL, for just six that was the crucial blow for India as Shami cramped him and forced him to mistime a pull.

Shami explained: “Chris Gayle and I were together during the IPL. Once you play, you get an idea.

“The one thing that I thought was that if I didn’t allow him to open his arms, then it would be good because at some stage, he would go for it.”

It has been an unlikely return to the biggest stage for Shami, who has stepped up in the absence of the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

He has taken four wickets in each game, also cleaning up Shai Hope early in the win over the West Indies.

That completes a long journey for the 28-year-old who had lost his place in the team over fitness concerns in 2018.

He added: “I failed (the yo-yo test), that’s true. But the one thing is I have improved my fitness a lot. I am in my comfort zone, I have lost weight, my rhythm is good.

“Everything is going well. I am trying to ensure that that rhythm, that diet that I have been following, I maintain it.

“The moment I lost weight, I found a rhythm for myself, there is a good feeling. Along with that, you feel a force, there is less tiredness so obviously the speed will increase.

“As far as skill is concerned, I have full faith in myself that whatever be the wicket I can express my abilities.

“I have always had confidence in my skills whenever I come onto the field and whenever I have been given responsibility, I have been successful in fulfilling that.

“That adds to my confidence. I have the belief that I can do it. I stay ready when I get my chance so that I can execute my skills.”

Zaheer used to have great seam position too, especially with the old ball. That's why he used to get such exaggerated reverse swing.
 
Shami is so good to watch unlike Bumrah.One of my favorite bowler,his action is so smooth.Yhe only thing is that age is not on his side looks to be 33 years old atleast.

The pitch at Visakhapatnam was not very easy to bat on. Yes, it was not spitting around for the spinners, but the bounce was variable and the conditions, which were dry, also assisted the fast-bowlers in generating reverse swing. As such, these were just the perfect conditions for Mohammed Shami to step and enhance his already growing reputation in the second innings of a Test match. He hit the stumps on four occasions to bag his first four wickets and then nicked off Kagiso Rabada to complete a 5-wicket haul. With this feat, he became the only bowler to have 3 or more five-wicket hauls since 2018, a number which underlines his effectiveness in the second innings of a Test match.

Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins have both picked up two 5-wicket hauls since 2018 and this makes Shami, the most lethal in conditions where ther is assistance to extract reverse swing.

In 15 innings since January 2018, Shami has picked up 40 wickets in 214.2 overs at an average of 17.70 and with a strike rate of 32.1.

Speaking at the end of the match, the fast-bowler revealed that they had planned on bowling in straight lines and targeting the stumps.

“We had the plans to attack the stumps between the two fast bowlers. We have been supporting each other well for the last 4-5 years. In the second innings, the variable bounce and reverse would be beneficial for us. It was visible that the batsman’s discomfort zone was that stump-line and you can see the result. It was of utmost importance for us to remove the first 4-5 batsmen as soon as possible,” Shami said.

Indian captain Virat Kohli too hailed the effort of his fast bowlers and spoke about their attitude of being relentless even in conditions which did not have too much to offer.

“It’s all about the attitude. If fast bowlers are going to think that spinners are going to do all the work, then it doesn’t justify their place. They ask for shorter spells so they can give 100%. That’s when you see guys like Shami, Ishant, Jasprit and Umesh as well doing well. It’s all about wanting to make a play for the team even in conditions that are difficult,” Kohli said after the match.

I don't get why Bhuvneshawar plays over him. Shami is so much better than him. He hits the deck hard, seams it, gets reverse and performs in all formats. He also has good pace. He's useful in all conditions, whereas Bhuvi needs swing to succeed.

Tail will start from no. 8 if he plays over bhuvi. The last 4 wont survive even 15 balls.

I would still play Shami. You have to back the top order with Kohli and Rohit that shouldn't be a problem.
Shami averages 10 better and a strike rate of 15 better. Iw ould rather take the wickets taken and runs saved by Shami then the very few runs Bhuvi would make once in 10 matches.

Tail is not necessary with the batting line up India has. Dhoni/Karthik/Rayudu all these duds will be replaced soon. Shami can run through any batting lineup anywhere, his wicket/innings is nearly 2x more than that of Buvaneshwar.

Bro please don't tell me that we have a good batting lineup fgs. There is no guarantee that the newcomers will do good.
We are producing too much openers and top order batsman the middle order basket is empty. Shaw, gill, mayank etc etc are all top order bats. Shivam dubey is the only one who is fit to play in middle order but theres no guarantee that he "ll succeed.

Three good players and jump cut to mediocrity.
 
Pakistan's legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar heaped praise on Mohammed Shami after the Indian seamer claimed a five-wicket haul in India's 203-run win over South Africa in the first Test in Vizag on Sunday. In a video on his YouTube channel, Shoaib Akhtar revealed that Mohammed Shami had called him for advice after India's World Cup exit in the semi-finals in the United Kingdom and he had predicted the Indian bowler's success at home at that time. However, Shoaib Akhtar was disappointed with Pakistan fast bowlers, who have not sought any advice from him.

"After India's World Cup disappointment, Shami called me up and said he was feeling sad that he could not do well for India. I told him not to lose heart but to maintain his fitness," Akhtar said.

"I told him that I want him to become an out and out fast bowler, he has a reverse swing, which is a luxury in the sub-continent, I told him you can become king of reverse swing," he added.

Akhtar was disheartened by the current scenario of his country's fast bowlers but added that he is happy for Shami.

"Now, you see what he has done, he has got wickets on a flat pitch in Visakhapatnam. I am very happy for him. Sadly, our Pakistani fast bowlers do not ask me how they can improve their bowling but the Indian bowlers like Shami are doing that. It is a sad scenario as far as my country is a concern," he said.

After declaring successive innings for 502/7 and 323/4, and bowling out South Africa for 431, India set a tough 395-run target for the visitors to chase in a day and nine overs.

Shami continued with his magical spells in the fourth innings and claimed five wickets, including four bowled dismissals, to help India wrap up South Africa for 191.

Well we have to see how it goes. The mangament so far has been terrible in handling the new batsmen but there are many talented batsmen waiting for a consistent run.

It's a shame corruption and bias still affects the richest board in the world.

Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami revealed what role Zaheer Khan and Wasim Akram have played in shaping his career. Shami also revealed that growing up he used to look up to Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer, and Akram. The pacer was doing an Instagram Live session with batsman Manoj Tiwary.

“When we were growing up, we used to witness that India and Pakistan used to be the most intense matches. Sachin Tendulkar is a great of the game and I looked up at him when I was growing up. The best pair was of Virender Sehwag and Sachin. When it comes to batting, I used to look up to Sehwag and Sachin,” Shami said.

“When it comes to bowling, I used to look at Zaheer Khan. When India and Pakistan faced off against each other, I also used to like Wasim Akram. Both Zaheer and Akram were left-arm bowlers,” he added.

Shami had a stint with Kolkata Knight Riders and as a result, he got the chance to learn from Wasim Akram as the former Pakistan bowler used to be the bowling coach of KKR.

Shami also had a chance to learn from Zaheer as the duo enjoyed a stint together at IPL franchise Delhi Capitals.

“When I came to KKR, I realised the skill and value associated with cricket. I watched Wasim Akram all my life on television, but with KKR, I had the chance to learn from him. For the initial days, I was not even able to talk to him.

“Wasim Bhai came up to me then, and he initiated the conversation with me and he started telling me things about bowling. He read me very fast, he realised what I am all about, I learnt a lot from him. If you have someone experienced close to you, then you should not shy away and try to learn maximum things as well,” Shami said.

“Zaheer Bhai and I did not play much together, but whenever I got the chance to talk to him, he was very helpful. I spent time with him during IPL stint with Delhi Capitals, Zaheer Bhai is very experienced, I just wanted to learn how to go about bowling with the new ball,” he added.

Shami was last seen in action during the two-match Test series against New Zealand.

The pacer would have been in action for the Kings XI Punjab if the IPL had started on March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
