[VIDEOS] 'Shutdown Pakistan' Protests erupt after Imran Khan’s arrest

No massive protests so far by the PTI today. SMQ is busy on TV instead of leading protests.

The government warned on Wednesday that strict action against protestors, who break the law, would be taken and stressed "such actions will not be tolerated".

"Whoever takes the law in their hand is neither Pakistani nor a citizen of Pakistan," said Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in a statement as she regretted the manner in which "government buildings and houses were attacked and state property was damaged".

After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and deposed premier Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a corruption case, protests erupted across the country in condemnation.

Expressing her displeasure over the intensity of the chaos that followed, Marriyum said that "the whole country saw the kind of reaction that followed Imran Khan's arrest", adding that "PTI leaders instigated their workers to riot".

SMQ says the attack on army places was done by the people in government. Look at the way he has backed out and not backing his parties supporters.

This is such a toothless leadership group. After Imran the party won't exists. It will be just another PPP and PMLN even if PTI leaders decide to keep the party.

Yes. SMQ is a very shady character. I am sure he is happy that Khan is behind bars - SMQ wants to take over the party.

PTI leadership is really coward. Zartaj Gul did a stellar job than these top-tier leaders.

Only way to get out of this mess is a civil war, unfortunately.

The people have to take back their country from the crooks.

PTI senior leaders are calling for peaceful protests, what’s that going to achieve? Wouldn’t it be better just to sit home?

Naseer needs to be dragged to the streets. An image of him being captured will send a message to the state.

I don't think attacking the citizens will endear them to these crooks.

I think as far as revolutions go, Pakistanis are mostly too well fed and living is not hard enough for it. Whether that's because the can keeps getting kicked down the road with endless loans and credit from foreign sources I don't know, but there obviously isn't enough hardship to make people come out in force like they might do in the middle east or south America.

But I do think there is a slow revolution happening here. People aren't dumb, they are becoming aware they are being played, the army is no longer trusted like it once was. Moving against Khan isn't going to be forgotten, it might well be the watershed moment where the military hold is finally broken. Or at least the seeds of it have been sown.

I don't agree that current 200 million people in Pakistan don't have enough hardship compared to the latin american population of 1970s or in the middle-east, they're clearly unwilling to move against the Army for some reason. But why ? Maybe a historian like @KB can give a more nuanced take on why some revolutions peter out quickly.

If I had to speculate, it could be any number of reasons below -

> protests are not organised enough to be sustained. Senior PTI leaders are deathly scared of protesting against the army because the memory of ZAB is still fresh in their minds. This army is willing to kill populist figures to maintain its grip on power.

OR

> people still respect the army and because they still think its the only institution that can protect the country from the evil heathens across the border. So a religious argument here. You can thank decades of Pakistan studies propaganda in classrooms for this.

OR

> the local population is just not literate enough or aware of how the outside world is and what the freedoms and rights of a modern state are. You don't what you're missing if you never had it in the first place. Why have a revolution if you don't know what you're fighting for ? I guess this a bit like your argument. Hardship is not hardship if you've never experienced otherwise.

Just my paindu observations.

Injuries and deaths reported in Peshawar: journalist

Four deaths and more than a dozen injuries have been reported in Peshawar, journalist Iftikhar Firdous from The Khorasan Diary said.

He said the bodies and injured were being brought to the Lady Reading Hospital, adding that many of them had not yet been identified.

Firdous also said that the road situation in the city was getting worse.

KP seeks deployment of Army in province over ‘law and order’

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has written a letter to the federal government seeking the requisition of armed forces in the province.

In a notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the KP government requested that Armed Forced be deployed in the province in view of the “prevailing law and order situation, the safety of life and property of citizens as well as security of government installations”.

Earlier, the interior ministry approved the deployment of armed troops in Punjab.

All TV channels including ARY have started reporting against PTI. Orders have been passed onto TV bosses to portray PTI as a bunch of miscreants.

heard the armys guy SMQ been arrested? true ?

Never trusted Qureshi, I think this is just to give him 'legit' vibes. Sprinkle some fake blood over his crisp kameez and make him look like one among the people. Soon after IK's arrest he came out with a keep calm statement, looked very staged.

Key are the armed forces in this.

We always asked if our army would turn It's guns on its own people, well we have the answer. It's an army controlled by the mafia. I bet the families of those that sacrificed their lives are thinking that we lost sons, husbands and fathers for what end?

The Interior Ministry on Wednesday approved army deployment in Islamabad, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to address the deteriorating law and order situation in major cities across Pakistan.

Following Imran’s arrest, massive protests broke out across the country, with a number of demonstrators gathering outside military cantonments, General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi, and offices of the Frontier Crops.

Dawn.com has a copy of the ministry’s notifications pertaining to the capital city and the provinces of Punjab and KP which stated that the federal government was “pleased to authorise the deployment of army troops and assets for maintaining the law and order situation across Punjab in aid of civil power”.

They added that the government took the decision to exercise the powers conferred under Article 245 (functions of armed forces) of the Constitution and Section 4 (3) (ii) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 (to discharge such functions as specified in the said act).

The Interior Ministry notifications highlighted that the exact number of troops, date, and area of deployment would be worked out by the provincial government in consultation with Military Operations Directorate, General Headquarters.

“The date of requisitioning the of the said deployment will be decided subsequently after mutual consultation among both the stakeholders,” it said.

Earlier, the KP government also sought from the interior ministry armed the deployment of armed forces in aid of civil power under Article 245 of the Constitution.

A copy of the letter, available with Dawn.com stated that the request was made in view of the prevailing law and order circumstances apart from the safety of the life and property of citizens and government installations.

No request has been made by the Balochistan government for the army’s deployment yet.

Troops ‘reaching Islamabad’

Immediately after the interior ministry authorised the deployment of the army in Islamabad, the capital police said that Pakistan Army troops were reaching several locations in Islamabad.

It tweeted that the Rangers and armed forces were at the scene to maintain public order.

“All those who are spreading incitement are requested to stop,” it said and requested women and children to refrain from travelling.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Wednesday condemned the ongoing violence and riots prompted in the nation by the supporters of ex-PM Imran Khan following his arrest on corruption charges. In his first address since the unrest, Sharif acknowledged the tumultuous nature of Pakistan's political history and added that “revengeful acts in politics never rendered good results for the nation”.

Sharif slammed Khan for the ongoing unrest in the nation and raked up the alleged corruption practices carried out by Khan during his tenure as the PM. Sharif said during Khan’s rule, the federal ministers used to air details of cases against political opponents, in which even the family members were not spared by the authorities. “Not only political opponents but family and relatives were not forgiven too,” PM Shehbaz said.

He also termed damaging public property an “act of terrorism” and “enmity” towards the country.

Imran Khan: Supporters steal peacocks from army quarters

Supporters of Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, have stormed several army compounds, after his recent arrest.

Footage from Lahore on social media showed protesters inside an army housing compound destroying furniture inside.

Several people were seen afterwards roaming the streets holding peacocks, which they say came from the commander's house.

Hilarious!

Reminds me of Srilanka president's house protest party. That was a epic scene.

Scary scenes.
Being a cricket fan, we all have special place for Imran Khan in our hearts. He’s a legend of the game and a legend of Pakistan. Wishing him strength to come out of these difficult times very soon.

Violent protests are not good and people should not follow their selfish leaders blindly. Besides it’s hard to sustain violent protests for too long.

A great protests calls for sacrifice and patience from the people. It could take months and years sometimes. This destructive streak is too bad for a country already in such a poor economic situation.

Wishing everyone well. Stay safe guys.

The supporters of former premier Imran Khan on Wednesday attacked the Lahore residence of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, police said.

According to police, over 500 miscreants from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party reached the Model Town Lahore residence of the prime minister in the early hours of Wednesday and set ablaze vehicles parked over there.

"They also threw petrol bombs inside the premiere's house," a senior police officer of Punjab police told PTI on Wednesday.

The police official said only the guards were present at the prime minister's house when the miscreants attacked. They also set on fire a police post there.

"As a heavy contingent of police reached there, the PTI protesters left," he said.

Before reaching the prime minister's residence, the mob attacked the ruling PML-N Secretariat in Model Town, torching the vehicles parked over there. They also put the barriers there on fire.

Police said that the protesters set on fire 14 government installations/buildings and 21 police vehicles in Punjab during the last two days -- Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the protesters had set ablaze at the Corps Commander House in Lahore after ransacking it.

The situation in Lahore and several other cities of Punjab remained tense on Wednesday in the wake of the arrest of PTI chief and former premier Imran Khan by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a land transfer corruption case.

Violent clashes between Imran Khan's supporters and security forces have left at least seven people dead and nearly 300 injured across Pakistan as the army was deployed in the country's capital Islamabad, as well as in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces on Wednesday to maintain law and order.

Police have fired on, used excessive force against protesters: Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch (HRW), in a statement, said that police had fired on and used excessive force against protesters following the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan.

“The government’s cutting of mobile internet services, and restrictions on access to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms, is overbroad and indiscriminate in violation of basic rights,” it said.

“The Pakistani government should uphold the right to peaceful protest while responding to violence with the minimum force needed,” said Patricia Gossman, associate Asia director at HRW. “Criminal acts should be promptly investigated and appropriately prosecuted.”

The PTI has issued a rebuttal to the Inter-Services Public Relations’ (ISPR) statement that criticised the protests “targeting army property and installations” following former prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest.

The PTI maintained that the ISPR’s statement was “contrary to facts” and “based on a poor understanding of ground realities”.

“The statement is a sad collection of hatred and revenge-based narratives against the most reliable, popular and largest political party of Pakistan,” it added.

Hammad Azhar urges supporters to reach Islamabad tomorrow

PTI leader Hammad Azhar has urged supporters to reach the capital city tomorrow in light of former prime minister Imran Khan’s hearing at the Islamabad High Court.

The former energy minister claims that reports are coming in regarding arrests and tear gas shelling at protesters from all over the country.

“Looks like the higher judiciary’s decision was not taken well,” he said. “A two-day-old audio was edited and released to pressurise and attack the higher judiciary.”

The Establishment hires clowns too.

Why have pakistanis given them 75 years?

Because we are stupid. Unfortunately, i dont have an excuse or sound reasoning for it. Its a mixture of them using hostile neighbors, religion, geolitical events to their advantage, etc. but above all its the people who it all comes down to. The generations before us and to some extent my generation as well did not think too much of it. We always thought they were watching over us and striking the balance between their power and the corrupt crooks who kept getting elected. But now we are seeing they were all the same all this time.
And they have run our country into the ground economically.

For a change Pakistanis should stop calling them " The Establishment". They are the army and call them that. Fear of the name creates more fear.

I had once read a book. It said quoting a Pakistani army officer that a COAS once told a PM that, why, One who has 750000 soldiers at his beck and call, will take orders from someone else?

Seems the army's loyalty is towards the general not the country.

And people think that scenes like these will be forgotten?

Srinagar Highway closed for traffic: Islamabad police

The Islamabad police have announced the closure of the Srinagar Highway for traffic and advised commuters to take alternative routes to avoid inconvenience.

In light of PTI chief Imran Khan’s appearance before the Islamabad High Court, the police — through a tweet — requested the public to refrain from obstructing the legal process and to avoid heading towards the high court due to heightened security measures that may disrupt public movement.

Punjab decides to constitute JIT for probe into vandalism at civil and military installations
The caretaker government in Punjab has decided to constitute a joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the vandalism of civil and military installations, including Jinnah House in Lahore, across the province following Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi today. The JIT will be responsible for conducting a thorough investigation and presenting a comprehensive report to the government.

In addition to constituting the JIT, the chief minister has instructed authorities to take more vigorous action to bring all culprits to justice. According to Naqvi, all individuals who violated the law will be prosecuted in anti-terrorism courts.

During the meeting, the caretaker Punjab government emphasised the need to take strict measures to maintain law and order and prevent such incidents from happening in the future. The JIT’s investigation will help to identify the root cause of the violence and provide recommendations for future prevention.

Cabinet wants no leniency for those involved in May 9 violence
Sanaullah condemns attack on sensitive national institutions

The federal cabinet on Friday, while endorsing the statement of the Pakistan Army spokesperson, called for no leniency against those involved in the organised violence against the state, Constitution, and law, besides hurting the nation's dignity, following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in a corruption case on May 9.

The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, also called for making such elements an example by taking strict action against them under the Constitution and the law.

The meeting expressed concerns over the situation in the country, observing that through such violence the leader of a "miscreant and foreign-funded" party had inflicted damage to Pakistan which the arch-enemy even could not do during the last 75 years.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar briefed the meeting about the arrest of the PTI chief in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case as per law and his sudden release on the order of the Supreme Court (SC).

Because the establishment isn't just the army. Its deeper than that. It includes feudal families judges and businessmen. Not so simple to say just army.

As for why we have put up with this? Because of many reasons one being security and the worry of being swamped by a larger neighbour. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. Fear can be a big motivation. Also a failure of politicians and alot of corruption..finally no real good economic policy to help the common man.but lots of factors some not the establishments fault but many are..

Lay down the law Rana sab

It should be. Because it seems to be ok to encourage breaking the law these days

Here before @bewal_express drags in Zilleh Shah and Arshad Sharif’s names as justification

It should be. Because it seems to be ok to encourage breaking the law these days

if anything you should be directing your messages to the resident PDM supporter and lifelong PPP fan who was writing posts after gleeful posts about how the riots were not big enough and that the PTI leaders should be on inciting more violence....
