West Indies [427 & 322/5] beat England [258 & 490/8d] by five wickets at Leeds, equalise series 1-1

Squads

Windies: Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich(w), Jason Holder(c), Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Miguel Cummins, Devendra Bishoo, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Raymon Reifer

England : Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley, Joe Root(c), Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Mason Crane, Toby Roland-Jones

Everyone knows this WI bowling unit is not in the same league as its predecessors in the 80s and 90s, it lacks both pace and skill.

But even so, you can at least provide some control and accuracy ! WI didn't even do that at Edgbaston - their line and length was all over the shop.

The fielding was pathetic too, no urgency whatsoever. The batsmen I'd knew would struggle against lateral movement, their techniques were badly exposed.

They need a massive improvement just to compete here.

England have won the toss and have opted to bat

England (Playing XI) : Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley, Joe Root(c), Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Windies (Playing XI) : Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich(w), Jason Holder(c), Devendra Bishoo, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel

Not surpriser with the WI changes, Gabriel and Bishoo for Joseph and Cummins.

Got to pitch it up at Headingley.

WI bowlers have bowled a more consistent fuller length but need to make the batsmen play more as these are easy to leave.

Trip to the ashes on the table for Westly/Stoneman.

Will they take their chance?

Very well bowled, this has been much better from Windies' seamers this morning.

Westley gone LBW.

WI had a similar start to day 1 in the first Test and then the partnership from Cook and Root followed. Getting Cook or Root here will be monumental.

Cook is gone but yes, WI have often over the years got into decent positions but failed to show enough ruthlessness.

Their line and length is much better today whereas at Edgbaston I could've vomited out a more disciplined pitchmap.

Gabriel just provides that extra pace the others don't.

Just noticed Cook is gone! That is a huge wicket. Stoneman is average and an easy wicket so England should be 3 down soon.

And yes, I do agree about the lengths being better. I guess Joseph is a good, young talent but needs to work more on his control.

I remember Roach was far quicker than any modern day pacer when he first burst onto the scene, now he isn't even a shadow of his former self.

Would love to see Windies do well this game. Some of the criticism they got from all quarters after the 1st Test was well over the top and disrespectful.

Terrific start for the Windies! Malan isn't Test quality and should be an easy scalp for Gabriel hopefully!

Roach is probably West Indies' best pacer since Ambrose/Walsh. Good to see him back firing for the Windies.

I rate Gabriel highly too. If he can be a bit more disciplined he can be world-class.

The batsmen need to step up for WI in this game.

This is good captaincy by Holder - brings back Gabriel for the new batsman Malan and an extra slip in.

Roach is seriously bending his back, looking for pace and keeping the pressure on. West Indian fielders throwing themselves around in the field. This is the commitment we want to see from the might West Indies.

Another wicket here and the game is absolutely in WI's favour.

Hopefully we get all out for 260ish this evening and then it will be a great match. I am in the stadium tomorrow watching it live, so hoping for a breezy sunny nail-biter!!

Roach had the potential to be. When he first burst onto the scene, he bowled over 145 KPH consistently and was furious, scary, bowled the short ball and got a lot of wickets.

Later he got injured and was very, very average. He seems to be regaining pace and wicket-taking ability but he's still not even 10% of what he was or could be. One of the most talented bowlers I've ever seen. I thought he was the reincarnation of Andy Roberts when he played vs Australia.

Lucky you! Seems like this is going to be one hell of a contest.

Shannon is completely stiff, has a lot of muscle and absolutely no flexibility yet bowls so splendidly well. One can only imagine of how brilliant he would be if he improved fitness and bowled to his potential.

Problem for Windies is who else in this attack can sustain the pressure ? Bishoo and Chase won't get much purchase from this pitch and Holder is a level below Gabriel and Roach.

I like Holder. He's a hardworking bloke who's picked up his team from the ground but he's just such a mediocre bowler that he releases all the pressure created. He's more of a batting all-rounder. He's bowling in the 70's and wasting the ball with this short stuff.

Powell drops a dolly at first slip. He'd better make up for it with the bat.

You don't drop Joe Root.

And the top order is shot away once again. Come back Strauss and Trott!

Athers is supporting the WI's :))

Big drop  Should be 5 down now

Am actually serious, I'd bank on KP playing a couple of big knocks in the ashes then putting all my hopes on Westley

England ought to be 6 down, Stokes dropped too.

Pathetic from Powell and Brathwaite, they'd better perform with the bat.

Bishoo gets Root ! Windies need to ensure England don't make more than 300 here.

BTW guys, Pakistan will be playing here at this ground next May.

Mouthwatering prospect to see Amir, Ali and Abbas bowl in these conditions ! There's always something for the seamers up at Headingley.

Which is why it's never a bad thing to lose the toss ! I'd always be sceptical about batting first even on a bat first pitch, England were probably encouraged regardless given the awful showing from the WI's bowling attack in the last test but they have rebounded quiet well here, if only they had taken Root earlier England would be 100-5, anyhow I'd still take Root on 59

Holder's captaincy has been reactive, too quick to change his field setting when had he been more patient these edges would've gone straight to the fielder.

Bah gawd almighty England are reeling with 6 down ! Come on ! bowl them out for 250 !

Hoping to see a lower order rearguard tomorrow morning followed by magnificent England bowling all afternoon :D

Always a pleasure to see the underdog team fight back, though the real test would be when the WI come out to bat. I unfortunately sense a 100 a.o on the cards here seeing the conditions.

Eng and 7 down, Stokes might hit the turbo after getting to 100, would be fun to watch.

It's funny how people say stokes is overrated.

Stokes is the best all rounder currently. A terrific batsman, useful bowler who can bowl at pace and a brilliant fielder.

England are so darn lucky to have a guy like stokes in the team.

Super knock by Stokes here, calm thinking batting according to the situation, without ever getting into top gear.

If Woakes goes next, then watch out.

250 could be a good score on this deck. WI will have to bat last and face Moeen.

Why not push Stokes up to #5? He's a proper test batter with better technique than some guys above him.

Fourth drop - this time Dowrich the guilty man.

All the drops today were dollies.

Well Gabriel takes the fielders out of the equation and rattles Broad's stumps instead.

If WI could catch they would have been had England out for 150.

Jimmy on 492 wickets in fading light in swing and seam conditions against guys who can't play the moving ball.

WI should have had England under 200 but there's no point in crying over spilled milk. Kraigg Brathwaite is a very good batsman and needs to step up when it matters most. The WI need to prove they are a quality unit. Today has been their day and they need to capitalize.

Just read this gem on Cricinfo by a certain James: "A couple of blokes called Woakes and Stokes were playing thier strokes and sharing their jokes whilst trying to coax the ball, with their pokes; but it was only a hoax and they collapsed for 258". Gold.

Powell you hack, put away those flashy drives and see out the day.

Sending in Bishoo as the Nightwatchman is a HUGE mistake. If your premier batsmen cannot handle Anderson swinging the new ball in low light, how will a bowler?

Bishoo looks in the mood to grind it out. Not fishing at a single ball outside off stump.

England got away! they should have been 100 all out !!!!! Robert I told you not to get overconfident before the series :mv

This is as good a chance as West Indies will have to beat England. They should look to take a 150+ lead.
