What's new

Australia beat New Zealand by 68 runs in the 1st ODI

Latham really starting to fall apart, maybe the time to give someone else a go in LOI's. Never has impressed in the shorter formats and is struggling in Tests now too.

Guptill needs to score a ton if we're to get a respectable total.

Don't trust anyone else in this side to get us close.

Agreed, he's just not cut for ODI's

And that beats 2 dropped catches, a lbw, several chop ons and half a dozen free hits?

Yeah AB had luck on his side too with all these things, that's what cricket is about making the most of your luck. Its also a opportunity for a sore loser to try and discredit the value of a players accomplishment too. AB had some luck with catching, no balls, LBW's and run outs but he made the score and that's all he can do.

An intelligent cricket supporter knows this and respects a good achievement when they see it, others just complain and make up crap like its a fixed match or its a road. Crickets like that you get the good supporters and then you get the.......well you know the ones I'm talking about.

AB scored 160 off like 80 balls so of course there's going to be a few chances :))

In my mind, innings lose a lot of luster when you've offered a chance as you're essentially having another bat. That's why I don't rate a few of Kane's big innings, he was dropped 3 times in his 260 against SL.

That's weird, Kane just offered Starc a chance, if Bailey had of been a foot closer than Kane would have been out. Does his innings lose its lustre now.

Another failure for Mr. Technique... all technique and no runs when it matters.

So damn overrated...

Kane scored a ton in one of the ODI's in ODI, think he offered up 2 chances... people called it a masterclass, I called it a dud. He should have been out twice.

New Zealand 34/2 (8.0 ov)
New Zealand require another 291 runs with 8 wickets and 42.0 overs remaining

Guptill has more ticker than Kane will ever have.

A mental midget the cricket world has put on a pedestal.

Steve Smith is turning it on today, one of the best ODI innings you will get to see and then a absolutely stunning catch. What a cricketer.

New Zealand 163/4 (30.0 ov)
New Zealand require another 162 runs with 6 wickets and 20.0 overs remaining

The point is most of the planet perceives cricket to be a boring English sport.

Heck Family guy ripped on it in one of their older episodes.

Is that a criticism or a compliment?

I am reminded of the apocryphal reply of Winston Churchill.....

"Mr Churchill, if you were not British, what nationality would you like to be?"

Churchill's reply: "British".

.............................................
I'm writing with tongue-in-cheek, but at the end of the day we British invented practically every worthwhile sport in the world, didn't we?

And many of the games other people play - baseball, American football, limited overs cricket - are just simplified versions of the games we invented, adapted for less sophisticated audiences!

Seth McFarlane is a notorious Anglophile anyway. The two most respectable characters in that show - Stewie and Brian Griffin - are basically English anyway!

What a surprise, by the way. Scoreboard pressure will get Australia home. Never seen that lately in an ODI.....

Fantastic ton by Guptill, sure he had one difficult chance dropped but otherwise he has been immaculate.

You're right, but it highlights a big point, doesn't it?

In ODI cricket if you hit straight with hard hands you will score fast and look elegant. Not like a slogger, but you will look like a classical stylist.

But if you take that approach into Test or even First Class cricket - and Guptill and Mitch Marsh both do - you will get cleaned up in the slip cordon every time you bat.

Graeme Hick would be God-like in modern 20 and 50 overs cricket. But he couldn't play with soft hands.

New Zealand 176/4 (31.5 ov)
New Zealand require another 149 runs with 6 wickets and 18.1 overs remaining

You must have enjoyed watching Mr. Technique score his 9 runs.

New Zealand batting lineup is really lightweight

How do grandhomme and Santner get to bat so high up

Your post makes zero sense..

Santner is at 7 and CdG is 8 lol... do you want them batting at 9, 10 or 11 in place of the bowlers?...

I actually don't rate Williamson. Like you, I think he's soft and gutless, but I also think his footwork is terrible. He has an inflated reputation because he did well on dead tracks at Brisbane and Perth last year.

Yep, then failed in his first real challenge in Adelaide. A very mentally weak player who rarely contributes when the team is in trouble and needs their so called best batsmen to show up.

Hesson n Williamson messed up with the batting order.

Neesham & Watling should not have batted ahead of Munro.

Munro should have come at number 4. Watling 5, Neesham 6, Grandehome 7 and Santner at 8.

If NZC thinks that Ronchi at 37 won't be able to play next World Cup which I think He can than they must look for a new Wicket keeper.

Ave of 24 at SR of 116 is better than Ave of 27 at SR of 68.

Geez... if only our technicians in the top order had stuck around and actually contributed.. could have pushed it quite close..

Should be giving Glenn Phillips a chance.

Watling and Ronchi are both poor options.

Henry and Munro showing more ticker than Captain Technique.

Fickle, Williamson can only do what he can do.
He has failed time and time again when we have needed him. Great players don't go missing when you need them. I wouldn't be as harsh on him if people didn't overrate him.

Time to the majority of fans to accept he is a second tier player that isn't good enough, consistent enough or hungry enough to be an elite player of the game. I don't even think he is world class at this point.

Congrats to Australia, they were the much better team and deserved to win.

Need to regroup and hopefully pick up a game, I can't see us winning two consecutive matches to retain.. so we'll have to win 2 in NZ to regain the Chapell-Hadlee.

And the reason he is being selected instead of one of these great players that don't fail when you need them is...................

Sure he's one of our best players, but he is a passenger come the big moments and big games.

Nothing worse (other than cheats) than chokers and mental midgets in sport.

All he can do is go out and play the best he can, if fans have different expectations to his abilities then he should not be bashed for it.

Yet somehow better players like Rahane are overlooked.

Because everyone is focussing on Kholi, with Kane there is no one else to take the heat. He has plenty of time and will mature when he does with luck NZ will benefit.

Doubt it, you either have the hunger for runs and big moments or you don't.

KW clearly doesn't, as Juniads said above, he is gutless.

I think ODI cricket is ruining Kane's technique, he went through a period in Test where he didnt get caught by the keeper or slips for 2 years, now he is getting out caught behind all the time poking at balls.

Maybe New Zealand cricket should do what England did with Cook and stop him playing ODI's for a while?

Are you implying that Kane Williamson is not as great as everyone hypes him up to be?

Surely, greats continue to dominate and learn, not get dropped from one format of the game to dominate the next.

Hence why since being dropped from ODI, Cook has never been seen again.

Kane does lack impact in ODIs. Kohli, Smith, and Root are all better ODI batsmen.

New Zealanders always wilt under pressure. They have not changed a bit. Aussies are a far superior team in terms of taking pressure and playing attacking cricket.
