England haven't lost a bilateral ODI series (excluding one-offs) since January 2017. After winning the first game, Australia will fancy their chances of ending that streak.

Overview

England v Australia, 2nd ODI
Old Trafford, Manchester
13 September, 2020, 1.00pm local time, 12.00pm GMT

The last time Australia toured England for a bilateral ODI series, they were swept 5-0, but the visitors look far more formidable this time around and showed just how dominant they can be at full strength. Either side can't afford one-sided results like this with the ODI World Cup Super League bringing context to every ODI game.

Australia will be particularly pleased with what Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell produced with the bat in the first ODI as their middle-order has been a touch frail at times.

For England, their inability to cash in on a great start to their bowling innings was another reminder that finding a replacement for Liam Plunkett, who excelled in the middle-overs with variations of pace and cutters, won't be as straightforward as they may have thought when they parted ways with the seamer after the victorious ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 campaign.

England have won won two and lost two in the World Cup Super League table while the last ODI was Australia's first in the league. Despite England's loss, there isn't much to pick between the two sides. The challenge of protecting a truly amazing streak may well serve as motivation for Eoin Morgan's men to hit back in the second ODI.

Remember the last time

Australia were in a spot of bother at 123/5 in the first ODI before Mitchell Marsh (73) and Glenn Maxwell (77) forged a measured 126-run partnership. England hit back in the final 10 overs to keep the visitors to 294/9. Express pacemen Jofra Archer and Mark Wood enjoyed great returns picking up three wickets each.

Josh Hazlewood delivered a phenomenal opening spell, not only dismissing Jason Roy and Joe Root, but keeping England to an uncharacteristically low scoring rate before coming back to claim the wicket of Moeen Ali later in the innings. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa (4/55) further chipped away at England's batting, but the hosts were not to bow out without a fight. Jonny Bairstow (84) and Sam Billings (118) carried England deep into the game, but couldn't prevent a 19-run loss.

What they said

Eoin Morgan, England captain: "Sam Billings and Jonny Bairstow did well to keep us in the game for so long, and they gave us quite a genuine chance as well."

Josh Hazlewood, Australia fast bowler: "The wicket was pretty helpful for a new ball, that's when it did the most for both teams, so it was about exploiting that as best we could and hitting that length. It was good fun to bowl eight (overs) upfront and test myself as well."

England are favorites but you can never count out the Aussies.

I expect it to become 1-1.

Cricket Australia: Steve passed both assessments, but we have decided to rest him as an extra precaution in line with our high level of focus on duty of care to all players.

England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (captain), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Sam Billings, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jofra Archer

Australia: 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (captain), 3 Marcus Stoinis, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Mitchell Marsh, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Good decision not to risk Smith. Head injuries/concussions aren't easy to deal with. Always take the cautious route.

Not many batsmen can hit these tall pacers off that length like these English batters can.

Roy and Root trying to get Hazelwood off his typical length. Great stuff.

England's bang bang approach in batting will mostly get exposed on surfaces that offfer a bit to bowlers. Through the line carefree hitting will work only on flat surfaces.
Eng would never have won the WC had stokes tried to tee off in the finals.

Roy was in for a big score. I Expect a big partnership from root and Morgan.

Aus is the truly best odi team. They won 3-2 in india vs india with their 3rd tier C team.

Hazlewood is a different beast in eng, should've played wc instead of Kane richardson.

But they lost against India at home both tests and Odi.

They chased 350 plus against India in India after being 10-2. Lol imagine if Pakistan did that. PP would have exploded.

England are the best ODI team in the world.

England winning the toss and batting first in a do or die match to remain alive in the series was the last thing which would have been imagined considering their tactics in last 4-5 years. Maybe they think new ball moved bit more in evening for the second innings

Broad is a good commentator, very good bowling knowledge which he dictates well

Yes pretty decent especially for his first stint or so (If I am not wrong). Would like to see how he does in exciting moments of the game.

This is the problem with Root. He is not as clutch as Williamson, who is again not as clutch as Smith, who is unfortunately averaging much lower than both.

Cummins back into the attack because Buttler's at the crease, get's him LBW 3rd ball of the over! Amazing

Never underestimate Australia :)

Still a long way to go though. England are top notch too!

Australia have only 2 more overs of part time bowlers to get rid of. Difficult ask for England to set a decent score.

Good to see Finch is still attacking and not just trying to get rid of those 2 part time overs.

That's the danger wicket, and now England are truly in trouble. Woakes and Curran at the crease, Aus should clean this up for 160 max

Zampa is developing into a world class spinner in LO. He will be deadly at the Worlr T20 in India and WC in 2023.

Not much spin from Zampa, England struggling to pick slight variations. Credit to Zampa for being accurate though.

Ah I see now it's Billings, perhaps I'm reaching a bit far here :)

These pitches suit Australia. They have 4 specialist bowlers, these pitches bring them into the game. Also when Smith and Labuschange are in the same team they can help Australia chase down on these pitches as well.

Aus recovered in the last match from pretty similar situation but, their RR was better when they lost 5th wicket.

Eng needs another century from Billings and hope Woakes and Curran can chip in with decent 40-50s or hope Woakes or Curran can produce their first ODI century.

Spinners naturally become more effective when Pace bowlers chip in wickets at the start

Pretty good call I think. He has 5 overs remaining as well.

Yeah Finch should try it out.

I’m pretty sure he can get Woakes out with a short ball.

Only one wicket is needed to go through the tail.

Billings probably trying to hang around till the end where he will look to accelerate. Risky strategy.

he will get obliterated in india. Just watch. he is a mediocre bowler. He already got figured out earlier when aussies toured india.

i have to say mitchell marsh is surprisingly very effective. Good choice to draft him in. Good player but only in helpful conditions ofcourse.

Disagree. He will be a better bowler by the time those tournament arrive.

disagree. subcontinent players will get better and keep obliterating him when he arrives. He is a one dimensional darter. I would even take imad wasim over him in subcontinent.

so aussies are fulls strength. england are missing stokes and ? thats it right? plunkett? plunkett is only effective in england anyway.

I think England is looking to go past Plunkett, he is 35 now. Was one of the key pacers for Eng in white ball resurgence.

smith doesnt even make much of a difference in odi tbh unless they play in australia. khawaja is actually a better odi player.

Khwaja is an average cricketer whereas smith is class 7 days of the week.
Khwaja can never play a knock like Smith's hundred in 2015 WC semi final

they already dropped him. Thats pretty disrespectful. I guess woakes is preferred.

Plunket was the enforcer in the middle overs, now Eng have got Wood and even Archer who are younger, can ball with even more pace and can bang it onto the surface like Plunkett, so they can be developed to play a similar role in the middle overs. Woakes has been the preferred choice with the new ball for some years now.

smith only performs like that in ODI at home though. khawaja did well in india. khawaja is a better odi player. Smith is the GOAT test player yes.

Suddenly Aussies are looking a top side once again. Most of the times they do experiments & rotations with their squad, particularly bowlers which never gives the true picture of g thy heir strength and I think it doesn’t help building a team either - may be its good for work-load balance of the pacers but not good for combination prospectives. This CV situation has allowed Aussies to put their possible best XI together for longer time.

they are actually very smart when it comes to managing workloads. India cant afford to do that as many of their players are required to be present as they increase sales figures.

Aussies don’t care much about LO cricket - even during BBL, they keep their international schedule. This is cricket after six months, otherwise Cummins, Josh & Starc probably won’t have played together even a single game.

Eng would like 220 odd here considering how much they have struggled

thats what i mean. They give them ample rest hence starc is able to perform in WC. Their schedule is never as busy as india's or hell even england. Aussie players always remain fresh for tests.

12-15 overs ago Eng would have taken this total without thinking twice I think.

Wow that's very good partnership by Rashid and Curran on a difficult pitch, proper shots rather than blind slogs..

Going by English tails resurgence, I think Poms are at least 35 short here.

35 short which they could have potentially made had they not removed a player for 'tactical' reasons, but no probs Rash to skittle these Aussies providing a few early wickets are taken me thinks :mv I have a feeling it's going to be Rash's day
