England [332 & 423/8d] defeat India [292 & 345] by 118 runs to win 5-match Test series by 4-1 margin

Alastair Cook signed off international duty with a memorable century, which epitomised the steely determination of England’s highest-ever Test-match run-scorer.

The stage was primed, the crowd was expectant, the script was written – and the former England captain did not fluff his lines.

The legendary England opener along with fellow centurion Joe Root propelled England to 423/8 declared, setting India a mountainous 464 for victory, before England’s bowlers made inroads during the final session of the day, as India stumbled to 58/3.

Just after midday, Cook got a thick inside edge off Mohammad Shami to surpass Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara to become the fifth highest run-scorer in Test match history and the highest-scoring left-hander. He had 12,401 Test runs, with only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacque Kallis and Rahul Dravid having plundered more. But that wasn’t the milestone he yearned for.

At 96 not out and one hit away from three figures, Cook cut the first ball of the 70th over from Ravindra Jadeja to Jasprit Bumrah at point for an easy single, but the fast bowler launched the ball towards the bowler’s end, sending it flying to the straight midwicket boundary.

Five overthrows had gifted Cook his 33rd Test hundred and his seventh against India, before the whole crowd stood to applaud their hero for several minutes as Cook soaked up the electric atmosphere at The Oval.

The sheer joy and relief etched on the batsman’s face was enough to tug on the heartstrings of even the most ardent of Indian supporters. After all, this was the final act of defiance from one of Test cricket’s finest and most respected exponents.

Cook and Root had batted positively on a good day for batting. By lunch, England had built a 283-run lead, with two senior batsmen in fine touch. Root hasn’t made headlines with the willow this series and has been outplayed by his counterpart, Virat Kohli, but the England skipper was back to his fluent best today.

Root hit his 14th Test hundred when he stole a single in the off-side against Jadeja. The scenes weren’t as emotional this time around, but it was a timely boost for the skipper – there were 11 fifties between his 13th and 14th Test hundred.

The memorable stand between skipper and former skipper ended when Root fell for 125, caught in the deep off the bowling of Hanuma Vihari, before Cook (147) nicked off the very next ball. He exited with handshakes from every Indian player and made his way to the pavilion to thunderous applause.

With England building a sizeable lead, their lower order batted freely. Shami (2/110) broke Jonny Bairstow’s defences and Jos Buttler chipped one to Shami off the bowling of Jadeja, as England stretched their lead to 400 on the edge of tea.

After the interval, Ben Stokes exhibited his full repertoire of strokes, making a flamboyant 37 before Jadeja (3/179) got him caught at deep midwicket to make it 397/7. Sam Curran made 21 before Vihari (3/37) got his third, while Adil Rashid made a 14-ball 20 before the declaration came.

The brilliant James Anderson soon found his rhythm, with Shakhar Dhawan caught on the crease for a plumb lbw before also trapping Cheteshwar Pujara.

Kohli, who has carried the hopes of a nation during some exceptional innings this summer, then nicked off first ball to Broad, which cued more England elation. India, meanwhile, didn’t know what had hit them. It was left to KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane, who have both struggled during the series, to lift them out of the mire.

Both were still standing at the close of play, with Rahul leading the way with a dominant 51-ball unbeaten 48, but India have a mighty job on their hands if they are to prevent England winning the series 4-1 on day five.

Day four saw England’s experienced campaigners fire; Anderson's equalling of Glenn McGrath's record for the most Test-match scalps as a fast bowler almost escaped the radar. The day belonged to one man, who deserved this climatic end to a tremendous international career.

Score:

INDIA: 292, 58/3 (18.0 Ovs)
ENGLAND: 332, 423/8 decl

Indians to play for pride and make England work hard for their win.

A hundred from Rahul will be welcomed. I think he can become a fantastic cricketer for India across all formats. So, he needs to get some runs here if he has to make a place in the XI.

Time is running away for him. He has taken it too long for establishing! The environment in the team is not great either! Kohli (once in a millennium player) himself is struggling with all kind of mess! He probably needed a Ganguly kind of captain & Dravid kind of coach!

Think I feel a heroic India stand on this last day of the series can lift them for the next series.

KL could kick on after this knock. Would be nice for him to get a big score.

KL should get a century here and you would expect him to do well against the West Indies at home which will give him plenty of confidence for the Australian series.

India are playing West Indies too? And tthey also have the Asia cup... Extremely packed calendar... :danish

I hope the great captain & great coach don't make the mistake of dropping Rahul for WI tour and more importantly Australian tour! In Australia you need to score at good rate consistently even if you have some technical weaknesses (I don't think the current weakness of Rahul i.e., inswingers cutting back to stump is going to be an issue in Australia. The ball is going to rise on to his body which he can easily pull for runs) In the meantime (in the gap) the coach has to work on this weakness & get it rectified by next time (instead of fantasizing his buddy friend Rohit or anyone again in Tests! Should understand what is important if winning the games for India is the priority as he claims in his so-called motivating speeches!)

BTW I don't mind dropping Rahul for LOIs to make room for anyone. I don't bother it, as the LOI team is already messed up with Dhoni, Jadhav, Karthik, etc, around! And Rahul's quest for LOIs is affecting his own game more than team composition!

KL the only one showing fight. Poor series from India ending in a disappointing fashion.

KL Rahul making sure he isnt dropped from the side. Right in the last innings of the tour after having failed miserably all tour :)) wonder what Indian fans think about it.

I love this tonking of stokes by KL. I am on KL's side.

100 for KL Rahul. 5 100s. 4 away from home. GOAT. Better than insecure Kohli. Take that Babar. Babar exposed.

Commentator rightly says that England did well to get Rahul out early in the series! Else it would have made a difference! I feel for him, even though people here can tell that he is trying to be selfish to keep his place in the side! I don't think he would have been dropped even if he failed in this innings (unless the foolishness of coach & captain continued!)

Brilliant innings by Rahul, always felt he had a lot of talent. Look at how beautifully he's picking the gap on those short balls

Rahul should retire from LOIs, you will see the upgraded version of Justin Langer & VVS Laxman!

Btw, shades of Umar Akmal's knock in that doomed test series on the last day after the fixing scandal. Let's hope he takes a better route than that ***** took

So he started this tour with a bang and ending it with a bang too. Did nothing in the middle so he should be kicked anyway. We don't need guys who are inconsistent and perform once in 10 innings.

He is now inflating his stats after failing miserably for 8 innings. I don't know whether to be happy about it or sad

Your talking as if he wasn't trying to score in the previous games . He is a good player he just went through a tough patch which he will come through if given time. This score should help him to kick on.

So who else has performed consistently? (Even Kohli can be complained for this innings, because there was a chance to draw this match!) Pujara the safest non-IPL player is also inconsistent! Its not that India were performing brilliantly overseas before IPL! Even the greatest (once in lifetime, once in universe) batting lineup of India in 2000s could not able to achieve much in overseas cricket! So its tough... How can 6 to 9 players be replaced immediately? Where are those non-IPL players to take up the place? It is about handling the resources more than targeting any individual, that's the problem with this team!

England did very well by getting Rahul out early throughout the series (I think there was a plan going around it, and I understand it very much now! It was not that Rahul was getting out just like that! They saw a threat in him and devised a plan for it! No such plans from Indian side! Just "Come on guys" slogans!) If Kohli got his company throughout the series, then these two along with bowlers were handful to take on this England team who had their own issues with batting!

This track is good for batting. Simple as that. Go back to the earlier wickets and he will struggle again. Just like the Indian bowlers this match.

Struggled mostly against one kind of delivery (one plan), even in this match (1st innings)! Otherwise he would have played like this in the 1st innings itself (which would have affected on the result of this match!) Even Kohli had issues in England before which he rectified this series! Indian batsmen are late starters for English conditions (the most extreme kind of pitches compared to Indian pitches!) So it is more about psychological issues rather than technical...

So what were you expecting them to do before? Teams play and strategise to win. If he is so soft and going to give his wicket away like that then he should stay back in India. Some fans are also comparing him with Kohli.

Also how many non ipl players are getting chances these days and for how long? Guys like Karun Nair are thrown out but golden boys like Pandya keep getting selected even after giving average performances. India is going to lose in Australia too if they go with the same team.

You are right partially... Even I am with you in some issues (Throw out Rahane from Tests, no issues there, we can find replacements in the WI home series itself! He is a bane in home matches itself! Pujara also should be phased out but not immediately!)

But opening in test matches is a tough position (even at home!) You can't straight away put two rookies in that position (even if they are non-IPL. I mean you are talking about players straight from FC without exposing to IPL) It is better to deal with the psychological & technical issues of players. It has happened with all players (including Dravid). There is reason why coach is assigned (not a dumb one though!) If that means Rahul should be kept out from LOIs, then so be it (cannot be kept out of IPL because it is everyone's private property :)) )

rashids bowling is worse than garbage in tests. Never understood his existence in tests

There is an important hurdle of new ball after 25 overs! These two should ensure they stay till then and don't expose the tail!

Pitch is perfect for India. Should go for the win to get something from this series.

If these two stay till new ball, then England will think twice before taking it! That should be their first target (stay till...)

Thanks to improvement in bowling we are no longer getting white washed. I'd take 4-1 over 5-0 ANYDAY!!!!!!

England don't seem to care either. I don't think either of these 2 would have been batting still without being dismissed if something was indeed on the line. These are soft Runs.

It is still not 4-1 either... More improvement is on the matches being competitive rather than one-sided!

So now England are intentionally letting these two score runs?

Root and Cook scored soft hundreds too.

For youngsters, soft runs or hard runs, it doesn't matter. They will take it and it will also help their confidence.

Also have to remember that the pitch is super flat. It has been like that since the start of Day-4.

Yea because that's what I said. Lol. There doesn't seem to be much intensity and Broad is off too. They wouldn't bat this way if the cause was still alive.

I agree, everyone just looks down. Yesterday had the high of Cook's century, all that emotion...today, no one seems to care. Good on Rahul for getting runs but everyone knows it is done. England would not even care too much about a draw tbh.

On a side note, where is Adil?

Still a long long way to go but England took this really lightly after getting 5 wickets thinking it's only a matter of time before the rest collapse. England are now pinning all their hopes on the new ball. With a little more intensity today, England could've won this Test easily. Instead a draw is looking more likely. And if these two add another 100 in the 25 overs, England would be shaken.

I didn't say that cook or root scored extremely meaningful runs when root especially was down hill skiing. They still had to set a target though even if our bowlers had given up. Rahul is playing this freely voz he knows they won't chase this anyway and their chance of saving the game is slim. Its not a very high intensity atmosphere out there even runs are runs, we can at least admit that.

I said earlier Rahul has the ability to be an impact player, now he is showing it. Just needs to be consistent though.

India have an outside chance of a win here! Be interesting to see what happens if they have to get 120 in the last session.

Shades of Gavaskar in 1979.....
