Jadeja is not cut out for tests. He may give 50 odd runs as a batsman, but will dish out a lot of runs against his bowling for not many wickets.

Aggressive bowlers win tests. Guess MSD & his cronies don't want to realize that.

Lunch on day 2 of the 4th Tets, sees the game intriguingly posied. India has fought back with 2 wickets prior to England taking the lead.

Bell reached his 50 before nibbling one behind that he may well have left alone, like the Indian top order should have done yesterday. The nightwatchman didn't cause too much headaches, although he was aggrieved to hit one out of the screws into mid wickets hand.

Southpaw Moeen Ali showed his dislike of the short pitched stuff and fell for the quickies 3 card trick and lost his poles when hanging on the back foot expecting another short one.

Buttler has been restrained thus far and assisted Root in taking the score to 201/6 at the break.

There is still cloud cover above and the wicket still offers bounce and carry and India would be hard pushed to bowl their opponents out for 250. Looking at the slow bowling, there hasn't been any turn per se for Ashwin, who is looking to contain the scoring rate.

The new ball is about an hours play into the afternoon away and possibly a huge opportunity for the quicker bowlers. Lets hope Pankaj can take a wicket!

There is every chance they could be batting again by the end of the day and its critical how they work out a method to occupy the crease. Their top order has to turn up and get runs. The pretty 20s will not win a Test Match.

Game on for sure....

We should have a countdown thread for Pankaj first international wicket ;)

Pankaj continues to stroike for wicket number uno.

At the other end, Aaron lets one through his hands that leaves Jaddu fuming. They all count. Root onto 31, Buttler 14.

Top shot by Root. Cover drives for 4 along the carpet.

Lead into the 60s.

Pankaj now into 250 runs conceded in his Test career to date.

Root finds an inside edge that finds a way past MSD glove for 4.

Crucially, a partnership that has now realised 51..

Yet AGAIN, the over ends with a boundary. Short wide, cut...4. Thanks says Root.

5 overs after lunch, 25 runs scored.....

The way Pankaj bowls, he will not get any wickets.

He is not good enough at this level. Hopefully he is playing his last Test.

Also, only BK or Aaron looked like picking up wickets. The rest looked ordinary.

Four more straight away off the spinner. Root eases into the 40s and runs coming along easily.

As expected India letting the lower order score tons of runs.

Jaddu and Pankaj look harmless.

Jaddu has been a major disappointment with the ball. He is bowling down the middle and leg line or short and wide. Not good enough.

The less said about Pankaj, the better.

Pankaj Singh is just a useless trundler. Dhoni persists with mediocrity as usual. Unlucky my foot.

I say Jaddu and Ashwin should bowl in tandem until the new ball is taken.

India in effect are only bowling with 4 bowlers. Pankaj is a liability. He is more like a change bowler who cannot keep it tight.

Misfield gets Root 2.

Delaying tactics by the batter, as the drizzle gets heavier. Bit of grease on the track would be nice!

Buttler takes one on the side of the bicep from Aaron. Taking his eye off the bumper.

Umpires confer at the end of the over. Decide to continue.

Then off the go.

237/6 Root 48 and Buttler 22.

Lead of 85.

I like Pankaj but India really need The Mighty and Tall back. Then by the fifth test they will have discovered their best attack by trial and error, and it will be a pretty good one too.

This match is now very much out of our reach. I don't see our batsmen score 400 runs in the second innings.

Yes.

Ishant in place of Pankaj would have been really nice for India.

Ishant/Aaron/BK/Ashwin/Jaddu is the best attack India can have in this tour. But to discover this, it took a very long time. Only 1 more Test left. Too late I guess.

England are set to take at least 150 runs lead. Match is still firmly in England's favor. Will need a major collapse from England batters from here on for India to have a chance.

No chance for India to win this,in these heavy conditions they wont score 300 in the second innings
England should win comfortably early on day 4

Varun Aaron max. speed 148 kmph/92 mph
Still cant believe they left out Umesh Yadav

Umesh might have given away some runs. But he can produce unplayable deliveries once every 4 or 5 overs. Hence he always gets a few wickets even if he is expensive.

Very poor selection from the Indian selectors. Now they have an explanation that they can give to the media as to why Pnakaj is dropped.

who will gain from this little period of rain?

England. India are not good enough to exploit the overcast conditions like Jimmy and England.

Now the ball will be a bit wet and Ashwin and Jaddu will find it hard to grip the ball.

India will be lucky to score 250 in 2nd innings.

Ever present clouds means Meghnath (Jimmy) will be unplayable.

We have reputations at stake here. This will probably be the last chance for Gambhir, while Pujara/Kohli have been embarrassed enough this tour.

I know its unlikely, but maybe these guys will rise to the challenge.

lol you have to be the most negative person on this forum...even SIF is more positive

We may lose the rest of the day.

Remember though folks it will be an early start tomorrow. 30 mins earlier.

Good news the rain has stopped but the outfield is wet..will take a while to resume.

Brighter clouds not far away - lots of water on the surface.

England probably hoping for more play today, however, they were the most keen to get off the park when the rain came. Obviously, not wanting to lose a wicket.

Watching it live on TV. Looks like there is slight drizzle now. But too much water in the outfield. Some big puddles.

How long does it take for the water to drain? I know the drainage system in English grounds is a lot better than in Subcontinent grounds. Any experts can tell me if there is going to be play today?

Oops, the rain has returned and it is pouring down at OT. The long delay is about to get longer. There are heavy puddles of water by the edge of the boundary.

:(

Light is going to be a factor so won't be much if any play, guessing India may be hoping to get away with a draw here.

India should always have the following attack.
BK, Aarun, Yadav, Mishra and/or Ashwin.

Sharma and jadeja as backups.

Anything over 150 lead and India better hope for rain to save them and so far so good for them.

Vijay, Dhawan, Rohit, Jadeja, Singh and Shami all have 1 thing in common - Mediocrity!!!

That's a good thing but you have to be realistic under these conditions where it is wet etc England will get the better of you.

Avoiding a loss isn't something I care about as a Cricket fan. Its not like we are losing a series for the first time.

The weather is dry and fine. The 5pm inspection was postponed due to a wet outfield. Until all surface water is off the outfield is not taken away, there will be no inspection.

because there is forcast of rain on all days

They would have to lose the bulk of those 3 days to rain to save india, they can play extra all 3 days to make up for the time lost so even one day where they get a decent amount of play could be enough to force a result.

there is forecast of storm on next two days (atleast that's what google says) and rain on monday

I agree if it comes at the right time for india they might be saved but if the storms come fairly early or fairly late they might get enough play in to force the result.

bbc weather seems to think day 3 should be mostly fine so i guess it depends on who calls that right, full 98 tomorrow could be enough for england.

Pathetic, why even have a Test Match in Old Trafford?

I guess the lost time now will still not have any impact on the final result. 3 Days to go and England might bat till lunch tomorrow and score another 100 runs. That gives them a lead of 180 runs.

India has to bat really well to save this Test.

The best India could do tomorrow morning is, under helpful conditions, just skittle out England batting in the first 10 overs. That will only give England a lead of 100-120 runs. If India can some how muster a good opening partnership, the game will be in balance again.

This could be a rain affected draw. Tomorrow the weather should be good. But Day 4 could be a washout.

98 overs tomorrow, should just try and win the match tomorrow.

Eng should win it. Eng is ahead by enough margin and there is enough time left.

OT has had a lost of good test matches down the years. Unfortunately Lancashire caught the tail-end of an American hurricane yesterday.

The drainage systems should have been able to cope but due to a combination of factors did not:

- two inches of rain fell in one hour
- a section of the field having newly laid grass as it was part of a a construction site until March
- a natural dip in the ground where water pools up
- LCCC put the waterhog over it instead of letting it drain by itself, which turned the area into mud

Even then, Cook and Dhoni could have shown a bit of initiative and agreed to move the boundary rope in ten yards to get play under way. I guess that Dhoni would have refused because his team is behind in the match.
