Conditions have changed. Maybe tomorrow morning will provide pacers more assistance.

Not leaking runs, but boundaries. Singh gets picked off by Ballance to mid wicket this time and perfectly bisecting cover and extra cover next ball........

50 partnership off 72 deliveries. Those 50 runs have included 10x4 and 1x6.......enough said.

Pankaj's Test career bowling stands at 0/218 so far

lol please remove pankaj from the attack.
he has been pathetic this match!

Pankaj ji making Dhoni proud with each delivery. He is booking his place in the team for the next test by this performance.

I feel sorry for Pankaj. He clearly does not belong at this level.

MSD is also making sure that Pankaj will not be playing again for India.

Bell off drives for 4 as the hosts head towards 100.

Ishant is broken

BK is struggling

Shami/Pankaj are 'unlucky'

Ashwin is useless here

On top of all Indian bats are batting like Pakistanis :hafeez

Ashwin should bowl in tandem with Jaddu.

Pankaj is releasing any pressure that Ashwin is creating. Too many hit me balls from Panka.

Bells 7th 4, brings up England's 100.

17 shots have gone for 4 or 6 inside 28 over's.....

England cruising here.

India need to try something different or the game will slip away.

Bring Varun back.

There is nothing in the pitch for Pacers now.

MSD should bring in Jaddu and at least contain runs.

Aaron still looks like picking up a wicket. All others with the exception of Bhuvi have looked extremely flat.

Aaron is bowling on the pads.

He still looks threatening when he is getting the ball in the right area.

Ashwin is actually bowling well.

There isn't spin now but he is flighting the ball and his new action is used to grip the ball better in order to get the drift.

Some balls are shooting up.

Wish we had more runs to play with.

That 6 from Bell was awesome though. Just awesome.

I never understood this deal with Pankaj so I started paying real close attention to his overs.

A typical over would like this:

Outside off - no threat - well left
Beautiful delivery - a bit of oohs - not out
Outside off - no threat - well left
Wide ball - Cut for 4
Above decent delivery - gets some praise from commies - well left - not out
Full length - Driven for 4

8 runs.

Variations of this is happening.

Pankaj is not a good enough Test bowler. Not his fault. He is bowling his best. He is simply not good enough.

Never seen Ashwin bowl like this overseas.

He's just flighting the ball and inviting the drive. Attacking spin at its best.

Maybe BCCI can flex it's muscles and make it a rule that India should bat three innings just to close the deficit. :P

I think its the pace that did Ballance. He was not used to playing pace from Indian trundlers. So was casual in his stroke.

Not much in the pitch right now, but Aaron has kept his pace up. Points for trying.

India have a new matchwinner, and his name is Pratik: "Well I have taken revenge on England in EA Sports test cricket winning the match handsomely by an innings and 330 runs."

:))) :)))

Not a lost match by any means. Day 2 and 3 will be easy to bat, any possible help could be tomorrow morning.

If India bat well second innings, this pitch may assist spin and Ashwin and Jadeja could come into picture last innings.

Day 1

England trail by 39 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

My guess is, ENgland will score close to 330 runs.

India will have to bat to save the Test. But the result will be ENgland wins this Test by 7 or 8 wickets if weather stays good.

just need to get bell.....rest are easy....especially Moen "can't play short ball" ali...aaron would eat him alive

If he can turn one or both of the balls 4 and 6 into ball 5, he will do well.

After losing the toss, even Alistair Cook, nor Bollywood script writers could have imagined what would come England's way on Day 1 of the 4th Investec Test at Manchester.

MS called correctly and sent out a bold statement to bat first, on a surface that was one of the hardest wickets of the year at Old Trafford.

Yet, the opening 30 minute salvo, put paid to Dhoni's thought process and he was at the crease in no time.

Despite sharing in 2 stands of 50 plus, the skippers 200 minute dig, was simply not enough, as his team plummeted to a paltry 152 all out on the stroke of tea.

Virtually, all the top order fell to feeble footwork and poor shot selection. The exception to the rule was Vijay, who was snared by Anderson, on his home turf with a top quality new ball bowler's delivery. Gambhir's return to the fold was short lived, as 20 months -between Tests showed. He opened the face of the bat and paid the penalty. Kohli came and went as fast as one of his supercars, fencing at one, that any player worth his salt would have not bothered with. Pujara has flattered to deceive in this series and despite being seen as the 'rock' of the line up, his batting has been more crust than solidity, as he poked away from his body to slip.

The battle of the day was Anderson setting up his nemesis Jadeja with consummate ease, with a sleight of hand that has confused many before him.

Ashwin accompanied his captain in a stand, and looked very settled before mistiming a cross batted pull. The tail was not good enough to muster any semblance of eeking out runs. Dhoni holed out for 71 and no one was feeling sorry for him in the press corps.

Another record was set with 6 Indian players failing to trouble the scorers.

England came out knowing they could potentially be ahead of the game by the close. Robson looked out of his depth, and form, as the edge of his blade was found often. His lack of knowing where his off peg was evident, as he left one alone that came back. Cook lost his wicket when his pull let him down for once, finding long leg's hands.

Bell and Ballance remained calm dispatching the bad ball whenever it came along. Ballance was rightly adjudged lbw prior to the close. Bell looked assured, despite wildly trying to hit his first ball out of the park, has 45 to his name, and his side only 40 behind.

Dhoni has a huge headache ahead if his side cant take wickets tomorrow. The wicket has some carry and bounce, but with the weather set fair, England will be ahead by the end of the 4th session of 20 in the match.

Pankaj Singh needs to avoid the 1 bad ball an over, which at this level is punished. Can Kumar be effective with the older ball? Aaron showed he has pace and needs to make the batters play at more. I don't think the wicket will spin in day 2 and they may as well do a holding job....

On the basis of today's play, it is very realistic that England will win the series 3/1........the Indian body language hasn't been great so far.

See you tomorrow.

If he can turn one or both of the balls 4 and 6 into ball 5, he will do well.

Exactly.

In domestic cricket, the batsmen didn't have the capability to score off all his bad balls I guess.

In international level, they are all vultures looking for a drop of blood.

But I guess he is too old and I don't think he can make those changes now. Unless he does something drastic in this test, this will be his last test.

India have a real job on their hands courtesy of poor batting performance on the quickest wicket of the series so far ((in 'English' (overcast) conditions)) although the pitch or the english attack was by no means frightful.

The Oval wicket (next test) is usu. full of runs so series will be gone if India lose here at Old Trafford.

My guess is England will score around 300-350 and then it will be up to the Indian batsmen to save the test, a really big ask considering the form of Kohli (it has been a struggle for him so far) and Pujara in this series.

Why not change that flag also mate??:srt
So what if I am of Indian heritage? I've never denied that? In fact, I've said far worse things about India.

Nice write up and updates Noddy, sounds like you're having a ball there :)

How quick was Aaron bowling? Was it legit pace, or early 140s that commies these days like to pass of as genuine pace?

First inning pretty much seals any test in most situations and I think same will happen in this test. Eng will easily score 350 runs here and then Indians have to score 200 runs to simply wipe out the lead. Indians don't have it in them to bat for a long time. They are good for fighting 350 runs and that won't be enough to win or save this test.

Test is pretty much gone due to poor batting by India. It's not often that you will save or win after putting 150 runs while batting first.

I predicted 2-1 for Eng after Indians won one test. It seems Eng will win here and the next one will be a draw. So pretty much going as I thought.

Joe Root on a day 2 pitch with the sun out, be afraid, be very afraid India.

England v India | 4th Test | August 7-11, 2014 | Manchester | Day 2

Day 2 Thread- as couldnt find one.

Will England put the series beyond India and in the process walkover India or is there a twist in the tale?

Weather wise- some rain expected which can save Indias goose.

Expect India to give a good fight (hoping!), let the battle commence Day 2!

Day 2 started off- with a boundary off the last ball-dang Bhuvi cant do that!

England 117/3

Good day to bowl! its moist, its cloudy, its sultry!

Good to see some traffic! Mark you and I havent seen eye to eye on loads of issues- but heres a cuppa hoping to a good day of gutsy test cricket- yes even though its in Lancashire!

Come on Singh, you are bowling against a slogging night watchman, just bowl at his stumps, its a free wicket!

Oh Pankaj! Tail ender mows one and it somehow goes for four by accident!

Keep going big man there is a few wickets for you here. India plays plenty of overseas cricket this year and next and you might be needed so don't stop trying
