What's new

England v Pakistan | 2nd Test | Manchester | Jul 22-26, 2016 | Day 1

The bowlers have come close to getting cook out but haven't yet bowled the ball that is just right.

Dammit Rahat! You can bowl too full to Cook and expect to get away with it but never even slightly too short

yep..Cook never spares a short ball..

Good pitch all round, comes on to the bat, not too much pace, swing early on, probably reverse later and spin.

Hafeez better get a century on this pitch. Else he needs to retire from test cricket.

Looks like we've learnt our lessons from Lord's about bowling at Cook. Only one delivery I can recall on his pads - but mainly full and outside off, that's where you need to target him.

I agree with the commies. Even in the last match Misbah had a deep point. It gives an easy single to the batsmen.

There is no point of wahab before 40th over. He has no wicket taking ability with new and semi new ball.

Wahab needs to take wickets this match , only looking threatening with the old ball won't be enough.

Just looked at England team, their no. 9 batsman is as good as Pakistan's no. 7 and James Anderson back.

This is the real test for Pakistan. Stokes and Anderson makes a huge difference

Commentators don't know what they're talking about. They kept whining about the deep point, how it made no sense, it was defensive etc. Those supposedly confusing, defensive field placings led to the English batsmen playing silly shots and losing their wickets as a result.

If there was a decent Pakistani commentator in the box instead of Ramiz then he would have explained that this is how Pakistan take wickets in the UAE, dry up the runs, crank up the pressure and wait for the batsmen to crack. Slow and low pitch at Lords meant UAE style was the perfect strategy, it's tried and tested and proven to work. Instead, Ramiz doing English commentary is a ******* who will agree with whatever the other commentators are saying.

You can tell who does and doesn't watch a lot of Pakistani test cricket by how much they moan about field placings.

EDIT: Well, I didn't know that word was censored. Ramiz is basically a brown noser

Defensive does not always mean bad. Defense with close in fielders can sometimes be the best.

If I may ask, what do you think about Dhoni's field placement outside Asia?

That's more like it from Wahab. If only he could stick to that channel more consistently.

I don't watch enough of India to comment on that, sorry. I can make something up if you like?

DHONI_FAN there are other threads to do players comparison, kindly stay on topic and don't derail the thread. Thanks

This pitch is too flat, our openers better pummel a lot of boundaries here.

Well there is my problem with this placement. It gives the batsmen an easy single and get to the other end. Even in the previous game I was annoyed by the batsmen milking our bowlers over there.

It's purpose is to block the cut shot. In the previous game our bowlers were getting tonked so giving cover was understandable but a short and wide delivery will be put away most times despite that fielder and our bowlers have been much tighter in this match so we are better off with stopping that single and put pressure.

Right-left batting combination can be disruptive for bowlers. Yasir with a few looseners to Cook.

Deep point to Yasir - You want to cut a leg spinner on a pitch that's keeping low? That's not a high percentage shot. If Yasir bowls a rare bad ball, the batsman's eyes light up as he smashes the leather off the ball only to be disappointed as all he gets is a lousy single.

Deep point to Amir and the other seamers - Allows Misbah to put fielders in the slip cordon and encourage the bowler to pitch it up and invite the batsmen to drive with the ball reversing away while keeping the run rate down at the same time.

Don't blindly accept what the commentators are saying and try and think about why a fielder might be in that position. Misbah has proved that he knows what he's doing, there's a reason for everything he does and it's always a little deeper than "He's a great big scaredycat"

We need 2 more wickets in this last half hour before lunch, england session so far.

Not to mention that test cricket for the last 10-15 years has been all about setting in/out fields and capitalising on mistakes by batsmen who have become used to scoring quickly. This is how modern cricket works in every country.

this looks like eng will get massive total 460, old trafford pitch becomes more dangerous after 2 days, we are forecast to get some rain tomorrow.

eng doin well.

Wonder how long before we see reverse swing on this surface?

These 2 are the big guns for Eng, if we get one of these out, the score can be kept to a manageable amount.

Important 20 minutes before lunch hopefully cook and root will be out before then :)

some tuk tuk in the offing from the two big guns...really need to get one of these but I'm not sure we will as they will be determined to grit it out..
