What's new

England v Pakistan | 2nd Test | Manchester | Jul 22-26, 2016 | Day 1

Seems like normalcy has been restored.

England not giving free wickets here and the lack of skill in the Pakistan bowling department has been exposed.

Match is gone if England score 400+.

Two modern day greats at the crease. Wonderful exhibition of Test batting against some pretty ordinary bowling.

Amir to Hales was a beauty, but Hales' footwork was poor.

Apart from that, nothing much for the bowlers.

I don't understand how this guy keeps getting picked. Honestly, I'd rather have Sami over Wahab. Wahab offers nothing at all.

I hope now people will realize that Wahab is nothing a bowler, some were hyping him due to his spell at Lord's, but forgot his over all performance :(

Captain should try Azhar Ali.

Ishant Sharma- 36.90
Mohammad Shami- 36.14
Umesh Yadav- 36.05
Ravichandran Ashwin- 25.39
Amit Mishra- 33.96

Current Test bowling line up of India and their averages. Should not call anyone a 'toothless' bowler.

I don't think India have the best bowling line up but just for kicks:

Numbers for Pakistani bowlers (current lineup):
M Amir: 29.40
Wahab: 35.64
Y Shah: 23.45
R Ali: 35.56

Not a thousand mile better than the Indian lineup if your looking at the figures only.

Misbah, as much as I love him, really needs to start using his head. Continuing with both Wahab and Rahat was a silly decision. We can't carry two passengers in the team. One of the two should have at least been dropped.

Misbah running out of ideas here. Maybe throw the ball to Azhar or Younis; show some innovation.

Wahab has the tendency to deliver one good spell every now and then but overall he's a nothing bowler and should not have been selected for this game.

Lagta hai, long day for Pakistan. However, this wicket gives their batsmen also a good chance. Unless, England knocks few with new ball, 1st 3 days I think both batting side would dominate. Hope there is not much overs lost due to weather.

Needs to ball more like that. Closer to the bat, outside of the off stump. He's been bowling so wide this spell that it's practically a waste.

So it's time you stop over-hyping your fast bowlers and accept the fact that your lot is no better than Indian fast bowlers. Even a dud looks good on supportive wickets.

England's bowling attack will rip through the batting lineup.

patience is the name of the game here...first day i expect england to go big but if we get a wicket or two in this session we can put some pressure on them. very good batting conditions though so expect someone to get a big hundred. need to get some maidens in there.

need to try different type of bowling like left arm spin or off spin or medium fast

By the way, in Lord's PAK bowled in total ~160 overs in 2 innings; so Misbah got away with 4 bowlers - now it's essential that he uses Azhar. This is a game where PAK might need to bowl 160 overs in one innings.

Skipped Ravindra Jadeja and his 23 average. Selective much?

If our bowlers are lack of skill than how come Cook and root are modern they great. Anybody can bash ordinary bowlers where England playing very cautious innings. If our bowlers are rubbish than English batsmen are ordinary to score 141 in 42 overs with some good edges

Good batting and poor bowling are not always mutually exclusive.

Bowling has been flat but they have batted superbly.

Watching Root bat makes one realize that it is necessary to have a dynamic player at 3.

Azhar is a quality Test batsman but not a quality number 3.

England's bowling attack will rip through the batting lineup.

I don't think so, may be with 450+ target pressure on 5th day wicket, but not in 1st innings. I wrote exactly the same against SRL-ENG Series during their for 2nd Test, that if they can survive the 1st 25 overs without much damage, SRL'll score big.

Still long, long time to go & I actually have other commitments this Friday & weekend, but we can revisit this post later -

"If he survives his 1st 35 runs, MoHa is going to get a hundred here, could be even biggish one" - this is absolutely the wicket I won't like to see MoHa on wicket after he has played for 2 hours, if I was a fielding Captain.

PAK Test batting is much under-rated. Let's see.

People have not watched Cricket in 80s or 90s, our best bowling lineup were not always getting wickets either... This is batting track, even back in OT 2001, our Ws were smack around in first innings... We won that test in last session of the last day but some reverse and spin...Back in 1987 five test match series was won by 1-0, four draw...

Lets hope there is some reverse today, otherwise its going to be a long day. Wicket is wearing out faster than people thought, its not going to help together. Cook won a very good toss. We have to bat well in first innings...

Also, these two are not only best England has, but one the best world over on a batting track, with even bounce, no swing or spin, what people expected?? - One wicket here can allow Yasir to attack the lesser batsmen.

I dont know why everyones gone negative after like a session and half.

Patience. Cannot judge the result of the game already!

Not everyone, just Mamoon and his brigade of wrist-slitters who had retreated to their caves after the first test but have now come out to play

Pakistan getting exposed here. Lord's win was a one off because England weren't at full strength and were also a bit overconfident.

Good post, the current generation is a bit impatient.

Wahab has to make the batsmen play. What's the use of these deliveries way outside off that are so easy to leave ?

Anybody else having problem with ESPN in USA? - I cannot get reception in last 30 mins or so

Batting first at Lords and playing an under strength England helped Pakistan's cause greatly in the last match. This is some good batting by Cook and Root.

I bet in the same pitch our batsmen will do all the dancing around the stamps.
Saqlain is a magical coach and very effective in teaching. I remembered when he was the bowling coach of Bangladesh, Saeed Ajmal was very ineffective against them. England should persist with Saqlain as their spin bowling coach and his spin tips are also valuable for batsmen

It seems like misbah is saving amir for the death overs :yk

After watching Gabriel bowl a magic spell yesterday on a lifeless track, the fast bowling in this game so far looks pedestrian

I am sure you guys are getting entertained by this after that boring Ind-WI day yesterday :)

I agree brother. Certain posters were pointing out how boring Ind-WI series is. I hope they're enjoying this exciting spectacle of Cook and Root batting Pakistan out of this match :)

lol yes . You are naturally overconfident after losing 6 of your last 7 tests against that opponent.
