What's new

England v Pakistan | 2nd Test | Manchester | Jul 23-26, 2016 | Day 2

What a horrible, flat, grassless wicket.

Hafeez and Masood really must understand that it's now or never.

I suspect that Wahab might be going to Cardiff to get his action tested. Some very unusual deliveries in this spell.

Will pitch get better from Day 3? Will it produce something for bowlers, or it will behave same through out the match??

Looking at the things since yesterday, if I was the on field captain I'd be contenting with these issue as of now !!

1) England have become very disciplined playing the fast bowlers, anything outside off stump they leave without hesitation - even the first stump line isn't giving results.
2) His seamers are practically giving 1/2 hit me ball per over which absolutely negates any sort of choke that might happen or start to happen.
3) His leg spinner isn't yielding any results even though he's found some rhythm on day two - some sort of rhythm.
4) Not Enough Reserve happening as well !!
5) England playing aggressively.

In circumstances like these Misbah needs to devise some positive based on other factors - Like

1) Pitch still has true bounce and is placid, for the most part.
2) Draw is a very realistic possibility if one of our top 6 manages the same magnitude of innings Root and Cook played.
3) Up coming bad weather :P
4) Grind work is our strength.

I MUST SAY THIS IS A FLAT TRACK NO WAY YASIR COULD GO WICKETLESS, even with the service of Saqlain, it wont make a difference. Why prepared such dull pitch after a great test at Lords. I rather had Green mamba then this.

We can score 400 here if we bat sensibly.

I agree, but for that we need our top four to come to party and put a decent score without putting pressure on Misbah & co otherwise a draw would be a safer play of where we stand .

I haven't had the oppurtunity to watch the current match, can someone tell me about the whether and the pitch condition.

If there is one person whose travails are earned this tour, it's younis. This tour so far is karma for his running that mout off last year (you can't compare misbah to me, odi team will fail without me, I would like to captain once before I retire etc etc)

I havent seen the match to be honest, but i must say its a belter ans if Pakistan batsmen fail to score even 350 here in 1st inning, they are in for big defeats in the coming test matches.

At the moment pitch is flat but when Anderson, Woakes co will be bowling it will be bouncy, seaming and hard to score.

To be honest, Ashwin is a far more valuable cricketer than Yasir.

It won't really change at all until Day 5. Even then, the rough from the lefties will help Moeen a bit but not massively.

There isn't going to be any seam movement or any extra bounce. The only question is whether Pakistan's top three have the technique to survive a little bit of swing from the new ball.

This surface should see England declare just after Tea at 600-7 and Pakistan ought to bat until Tea on Day 4 and score 550.

But I don't think this Pakistan team can survive except in a low scoring match.

Wow, I expected us to pick up a few wickets you know, these guys have disappointed

On this bowling form, wahab needs to sit out the rest of the series.
Changing the subject, I expect Pakistan to bat quite well in this match

LoL I can get the frustration. From what I saw yesterday, pitch looked flat although Pakistan didn't bowl the right areas. Amir was excellent.

I don't understand this Wahabism in Pakistan. Wahab bowled just one good spell(one spell not an entire quota) in the world cup where he didn't even pick up Watson's wicket neither won his team the match. Averages 35 in tests despite the support he gets, 32 in ODIs with ER of 5.6. T20 stats nothing special either.

Junaid Khan before injury was far more skillful and intelligent that Wahab will be, hope JK gets back his groove. Enjoyed watching him in full flow

Hope Umar Akmal is watching Atherton's analysis on Root learning from his mistakes.

Who was responsible for saying that Manchester would suit Pak bowlers?

To be honest, Ashwin is a far more valuable cricketer than Yasir.

Knee jerk reaction from a typical Pakistani fan. Yasir playing his first test series outside asia, for the love of God, give him a break lets see how pak bats in 1st innings and then we will see if yasir can come good in 2nd innings. At the moment it looks flat pitch and we must target follow on first.

we need to give woakes a BD passport. Desperately need a fast bowling allrounder

I have always maintained this, Wahab is a mediocre bowler. He's 31 and hasn't got much left in the tank.

Ashwin has great potential with the bat. Saw highlights of his century today, shades of VVS.

What's the deal with Amir?

He's injured???

YK needs to make a triple next inning just to compensate for all those drops

I still feel England will not get to 500 . IF we can roll them over for 450 ish then we have another great Test match in the making here.

If it's any consolation, barring the 2014 hammering of India at old trafford (they batted first), in2013 it was a draw as Australia racked up a huge score in the first innings (Anderson was wicketless)

Pakistan should play the waiting game till the 3rd new ball :yk

How lucky are England to find both Stokes and Woakes in the same generation. How much I wish to have them both in Indian team!!!!!

This match can potentially have an exciting finish if Pakistan bat well. We don't need to overhaul their score. Just get dismissed around 100 behind on the middle of day 4.

Those moaning about the pitch should realise when Pakistan bat they'll more than likely make it out to be a similar pitch like the one at Sabina Park, circa 1998 :))

Wrist slitting started already.

Yasir might be a better spinner but Ashwin's batting is a big luxury.

It's usual for your main spinner to be so talented with the bat as well.

Can easily become a 40 averaging Test batsman if he works hard.

That's all that is relevant even tho these comparisons are odd for such different bowlers.

Haven't had a batsman like Root since Inzamam, and he will surpass him too most probably.

The pitch has a bit more in it than Pakistan have been able to make use of. England strong favourites to win the match now.

Different bowlers yes, but both have the same role. i.e. main spinners.

However, Yasir is a tailender who can score 20-25 once in a while, but Ashwin is/can be a very solid Test batsman too.

So clearly their batting skills is not irrelevant, and they don't need an extra all-rounder.

Having Ashwin allows them to absorb an additional bowler or batsman instead.

Run Rate is increasing.

It was 3.4 and now closed to 3.7

Edit: and finally woakes inning comes to end.

Woakes out!!!

Yasir has looked much better today. Should have had Root as well(Younis should have done better imo)

Hafeez won't get a better track to bat in England than this, better make use of it

I'd rather have a leg spinner than an off spinner for tests. I get the argument for a stokes/woakes kind of player in the side instead of say Rahat, but not Ashwin.

Stokes will just be out there to give us phainta.

38 overs and 139 runs later Yasir decides to do it by himself....and gets a wicket

With teammates like Younis who needs enemies
