What's new

England v South Africa l 3rd Test l Edgbaston l 30/7/08 to 03/08/2008

43.6 Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, throws in the full toss now, it keeps high, and de Villiers has to sway his back in, and thrust his hips out, to let the ball go past him down leg. de Villiers ends up on his knees and it's not ruled as a no-ball on height - around the waist

150-4 - need 131 to win

Not many appealed for that one... he did glove it, it seems many have missed that

Wasnt it ENG who turned the review system down in this series??

Im sure it wouldve helped them :))

Smith gets lucky. half an appeal for a catch that came from thew glove. Aleem Dar says no

I don't like the no appeal, half appeal thing. If it is out just give it out if umpire saw it.

Ramparkash got 100 100s

exactly if it's out it should be given. However if the English team did not appeal, that also shows that it wasn't a straightforward decision.

abcde ct at first slip off Panesar
SA 171-5 - need 110 more to win
23-24 overs left today

This is going to be close. I fancy South Africa to do it by two or three wickets.

100 for smith!

Brilliant knock under pressure! skipper leading from the front!

doesn't look like the match will end today unless England gets 2-3 wickets in next few overs. SA is not goint to take chances. Light doesn't look that good looking at the brightness of the scoreboard lights

Smith is the only man ever to score a century in the fourth innings at Edgbaston

Wow.... well played Smith!

Smith is the first ever player to score a century in the 4th innings at Edgbaston. WOW.

Actually if my memory is right Warne nearly achieved that in 2005.

A Steward from another side of the ground runs in. Probably to help a person taken out of the ground. A possible streaker stopped :(

RR has picked up. 44 runs in last 10 overs. SA needs 51 more to win. There are 7 overs left and SA can take another 30 minutes. Now it looks like SA might try and finish it today

Why are these SAF crickters so big? :P

Smith, Kallis etc...

Even Steyn has build up some muscles.

They really do a lot weight training i think

this is test cricket at its best. so tense and i dont really support any of these but SA all the way here

They imported 23 Sahiwal ki gain/bhains few years ago. Just look closely what they drink during drinks break.

Xtra half-hour claimed

Need only 24 runs with 5 wickets in hand

england brought back collingwood and sidebottom but still they gonna lose... way to go england

two 4s off flintoff over, man i just love seeing that guy getting smashed all over the park :D

Smith with his 6th 150+ score
271-5 - need 10 to win. about 6-7 overs left

Smith hits a four off Pietersen.
SA 283-5 after 80 overs - wins by 5 wickets :135:

Vaughan with a lot of credit to SA and G Smith innings. Said they are a better team and winning 2-0. G Smith deserves all the credit he will get for this innings

For Pietersen dismissal he said there was no problem with his dismissal. He got us back in the game with Collingwood and that is how he bats. We failed in first innings and at that time he said if SA get about 325 then they will have a problem

Someone talking on radio (Micky Arthur maybe)
one window over the sight screen is fairly dark and was causing some problems. He even mentioned that Bell had a problem on some ball.
I think he said they didn't make any complaints and as it was same through out the game

Brilliant innings from Smith and a well deserved double for the Proteas - the match and the series. They've dominated the series after the first two days at Lord's and have recorded their first series win in England since the 60s. I don't think anyone is particularly surprised that they have done so, but the notion of a close series has been dismantled with some excellent cricket that didn't even rely on the much-vaunted pace attack.

Their batsman have displayed an ability to score big and patiently where England's have succumbed to their own idiocy. Pietersen is a prime example - he had an opportunity to win the match for England yesterday and threw it away. He was in the zone and did something absurd.

Once again, congratulations to South Africa and to Graeme Smith. They played the best cricket, and rarely looked out of the game. Collingwood's century gave England hope, but whilst Smith was at the crease they looked in control. It was an absorbing Test Match, a disappointing one from my perspective, but good, hard-fought cricket where the team with the greater mental strength eventually won through.

Congrats to South Africa on winning the series and a brilliant innings played by Smith.

England will have to seriously reevaluate a couple of things. First of all Michael Vaughan's position in the team, if he isnt going to be scoring runs, then he is a liability who is always putting his team under pressure. Second of all, this English bowling attack is weak, Anderson, Sidebottom will pick up the odd wicket or two but are they good enough to blast a side like SA out, can they sustain the pressure on a long term basis. I think England missed a trick by not playing Harmison as Sidebottom was injured before the match and was out of rhythem before this game. Finally Monty Panesar, well i cant believe Pakistan made him look like a world class spineer, the SA have feasted on his bowling.

The return of Freddie has been good for England but they arent Firing as a unit. Inconsistent batting, Flintoff's poor batting form is a huge concern. There is something missing in the side, that something special, they need some impact players. This England team isnt bad but they just arent as good as SA at the moment.
