Players of the 90s had the luxury of planting their front foots and play the ball because they knew they would rarely be given out lbw on the front foot. By early & mid 200s hawkeys came in and umpires started giving the batsmen out on front foots.(pre DRS)

Also the lbw law changed. I sometimes doubt that Swann would have taken 250 wickets had he come up in the eighties or nineties.

I doubt it. Nadeem was far too slow in the air. He also lacked the guile of Ashwin. Root picking fifer (mostly our tail) is something to do with our own batting.

This is India, not Australia. 2 front-line quicks supported by Stokes would be plenty to exploit any swing under lights. For the majority of play, they needed both Bess and Leach here supported by Root. Massively misread the conditions, and the opposition did not
