India reach 21/0 at stumps after bowling England out for 183 on Day 1 of the 1st Test

People that haven't followed English cricket closely over the last two years significantly underestimate the ineptitude of their batting. This isn't the same quality of team that won the series in 2018. If India don't win this series, it'll be a shock for me.

Pity about the weather forecast for this test though.

Their batting in 2018 wasn't good either.

They won that series off their bowling alone. Only Sam Curran and Buttler to an extent had any sort of impact with the bat that series. Of course, winning all 5 tosses made the job a bit easier as well.

I don't get how Jennings, Denly, Washed up Cook is better than Burns, SIbley, Crawley.
Rest all are same except Stokes who didn't do much even last time. Also the same English team beat Pakistan who are usually very good in England

Anderson, Broad, and Root are all older for a start. Root has averaged 30 at home since the end of that series.

Jonny Bairstow has lost his bearings as a test batsman during that period. Ben Stokes is their best test batsman and him missing out clearly weakens them.

They also had Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali as capable spin options during that series, whereas they have wasted Jack Leach and Dom Bess by not bothering to back them at home. One can argue that even Sam Curran has regressed as a test cricketer since his debut series.

England's win against Pakistan last summer isn't really reflective of anything given that two tests were washed out. Furthermore, Pakistan's test bowling isn't on the same planet as India.

so whats the dope on ishant - he injured? and why ashwin not playing - ? i guess jads better take a few wickets to justify his place...meanwhile not too much bounce in wicket by the looks of it...

India's batting lineup isn't great either. Other than Kohli, Pant the rest are all hit-or-miss.
Hence it's puzzling why England decide to bat first.

And especially when you have one of the most destructive swing bowling duos of all time in your side and in home conditions. They've not really played to their strengths with that toss decision, but still only 7 overs in. A Root masterclass might prove me wrong.

Yeah. It's been almost 20 years since they starting broadcasting cricket matches they still have learnt anything. :inti
As bad as Star themselves are, they're still miles ahead of SONY in cricket coverage. That's why I cringe every time a series is awarded to SONY.

Thankfully, at least the ICC events are covered by Star.

One extra over being bowled by Bumrah in his first spell.

Why one better than the other? is the choice of the commies on each channel? or something else?

What a jaffa from Bumrah but Crawley survives!

I don't bother too much with the choice of commentators. I worry more about the broadcaster showing all 6 deliveries of an over and this is where Star is ahead of SONY.

Conditions are good for batting - if eng max their toss advantage, its forecast for rain and cloudy conditions on days 2&3 - meaning we'll get the worst of the conditions. i guess VK might have some sort of a record with loosing 7 straight tosses in eng....

Karthik and Athers conversing about India in Olympics.

Jadeja over Aswhin is a very questionable decision. Especially when Ashwin did well in county games he played while Jadeja did basically nothing during the last 2 months apart from featuring in a disastrous outing at WTC final.

Jaffa from Shami now but he is always unlucky that he hardly ever picks wickets on such deliveries.

It is crazy how Shami manages to beat the bat of batsmen for fun but never seems to get the edge..

Good toss to win. England should bat a day and a half here

Pant might as well stand up to the stumps to Thakur

This is club level pace

In England, medium pacers have always excelled more than out and out quicks.

As Alastair Cook said today, in England, it's not important how fast you bowl the ball, it's important where you pitch the ball.

What a big fail Kohli is as far as DRS is concerned!

Lord Thakur in.

Why Lord? The dude has the heart of a lion, he fights each time he's given a chance, he holds the india cap dear and plays with passion, is a decent bowler given the conditions, above av fielder and does the job of tonking it in white ball and has a good technique in tests....
i always wonder why he gets some of the mirth...

250 will be a very good score here tbh bowl has seemed and swung almost every bowl.

For once, Kohli's gambler's instinct pays off. Shows the margins between madness and genius are non-existent occasionally.

Hi is a decent cricketer but nothing special. He wont be a great cricketer however he is a utility cricketer.

True, wont be great but making the best use of what talents u have, knowing what you cant do and working on your skills can mean you have a good package. Rahul D once said he knew he wasnt the most talented guy around, but with his hard work and dedication he moullded himself - am not saying ST can be a great, but i admire how he holds each chance he gets dear and does a whole hearted attempt....and thats why i commented on the mirth he gets...

First look at Siraj he looks more suited to Australian / Indian condition bowler. 2 reasons one his seem is scrambled and second he is likely to bowl some boundary balls and in England every run counts on some pitches.

Well India has blessed with some great talent so thats why he gets what he gets by some Indian fans. However not everyone who plays in any international team will end up becoming a great cricket some are there to do a decent job and thats what he has done so far so fair play to him.

1 more over for lunch. If Eng dont lose any more wicket, it will be even session.

Pretty even session of attritional cricket so far.

England session for me.. England if they get 250 batting first it will be a good score.

Any of you think Kohli should have reviewed that offswinger by Bumrah to Sibley?

I apologize if being outspoken. But to me India 3-1 or 4-0.India on paper is simply too good for England. However cricket is all about uncertainty.I agree completely with Sunil Gavaskar.England even won in Australia in recent times? India is far too good for England.

Looking at the weather:

Day 1 - There will be full game today.

Day 2 - Half day tomorrow...heavy rain predicted from 1pm

Dat 3 - All day rain on friday

Day 4 - Iffy weather on saturday but should get 50-60 overs game.

Day 5 - Better weather but some rain again. We may still get 90 overs

Looks like there will be max of 270 overs in this game.

Question is - Will there be a result on a 3 day test?

The first Test between England and India on 4 August at Trent Bridge will mark the beginning of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Overview:

England v India, first Test
Trent Bridge, Nottingham
4 August, 11:00 Local

India have had to deal with injury woes yet again on the England tour with Mayank Agarwal out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Avesh Khan are already ruled out of the whole series. However, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are flying to England as replacements will give the visitors options for the second Test.

Rohit Sharma is now likely to open with KL Rahul, who has proved a strong contender after a hundred in the practice game against County Select XI. It also remains to be seen whether India will go in with two frontline spinners or think about adding a fourth pacer with the conditions in England favouring the seamers.

England, on the other hand, have a void to fill in the absence of Ben Stokes, who brought balance to the side. Sam Curran is the leading man in Stokes’ absence who can offer the same set of skills with the bat and ball. The hosts will also be without the services of Jofra Archer, who is recovering from an elbow surgery.

The wicket at Trent Bridge looks bowler-friendly with plenty of grass and with both teams rich in pace options, it might be a tightly-fought contest.

Remember the last time:

The two sides went head-to-head in a four-match Test series hosted by India in February this year. In the final Test, India dominated England with a comprehensive win by an innings and 25 runs, thus taking the series 3-1.

England batting first, posted 205 with Ben Stokes scoring the only fifty in the first innings. India then went on to post a lead of 160 with the help of Rishabh Pant’s 101 and Washington Sundar’s unbeaten 96* which proved more than enough for the visitors.

In England’s second innings, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin spun the web around the visitors as both took five wickets each. England were bowled out for 135 with Dan Lawrence scoring the highest – 50 off 95 balls.

What they said:

Joe Root (England captain): “It will be nice to start strongly from a personal point of view. I know if I go out there and score big runs, it gives us opportunities to win the game and those things look after themselves. But Test cricket is not about you, you as an individual. It’s about winning for England and that contributes something bigger than yourself. That’s the mindset going into this series. Hopefully, we can outplay India.”

Ajinkya Rahane (India vice-captain): “Playing away from home is always a challenge. It’s all about putting our best foot forward and getting used to the conditions quickly. I thought in 2018 we played very good cricket but the result didn’t go our way. This is the World Test Championship and so, every Test counts. Rather than focusing on the series, we will focus on one game at a time.”

Squads:

England Squad : Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root(c), Jonny Bairstow, Daniel Lawrence, Jos Buttler(w), Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Craig Overton, Sam Curran, Jack Leach, Dominic Bess, Ollie Pope, Haseeb Hameed

India Squad : Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Wriddhiman Saha, Umesh Yadav, Hanuma Vihari, Abhimanyu Easwaran

India 4-1 or 3-1?Good prediction if you evaluate team balance and strengths?

Defo a good decision by Kohli to go upstairs. Much to my disappointment the batsman clearly nicked it:( In August now the entire series will be badly effected by the weather. In England it would be much wiser to have the main series first leaving the lesser one closer to the end of summer.

Trap set. and Well executed. Sibley has awful technique.
How in earth are Burns and Sibley opening for England. Surely better prospects in County.

England test match batting is very poor for quit sometime now. The only thing in their favor is that all of them can bat a bit.

Just back from watching an awesome 200m finals - De grasse - Wow...a champion at last.
cmn get Root....and also get jads against bairstow....before he settles

I hope they dont bowl him for too long. Because if they wanted spinner to bowl overs then they should have played Ashwin who gets lefties out for fun no matter what wicket and conditions.
