People that haven't followed English cricket closely over the last two years significantly underestimate the ineptitude of their batting. This isn't the same quality of team that won the series in 2018. If India don't win this series, it'll be a shock for me.
Pity about the weather forecast for this test though.
I don't get how Jennings, Denly, Washed up Cook is better than Burns, SIbley, Crawley.
Rest all are same except Stokes who didn't do much even last time. Also the same English team beat Pakistan who are usually very good in England
Gill? You are looking desperate now? ) India is playing a full strength team.
India's batting lineup isn't great either. Other than Kohli, Pant the rest are all hit-or-miss.
Hence it's puzzling why England decide to bat first.
As bad as Star themselves are, they're still miles ahead of SONY in cricket coverage. That's why I cringe every time a series is awarded to SONY.Yeah. It's been almost 20 years since they starting broadcasting cricket matches they still have learnt anything.

Thankfully, at least the ICC events are covered by Star.
I don't bother too much with the choice of commentators. I worry more about the broadcaster showing all 6 deliveries of an over and this is where Star is ahead of SONY.Why one better than the other? is the choice of the commies on each channel? or something else?
It is crazy how Shami manages to beat the bat of batsmen for fun but never seems to get the edge..
Maybe he need to pitch ball much fuller?
Shardul Thakur looks like he’s put on some pounds
Pant might as well stand up to the stumps to Thakur
This is club level pace
few biriyanis from takaa tak, Hounslow
Abbas say hi
Lord Thakur in.
Why Lord? The dude has the heart of a lion, he fights each time he's given a chance, he holds the india cap dear and plays with passion, is a decent bowler given the conditions, above av fielder and does the job of tonking it in white ball and has a good technique in tests....
i always wonder why he gets some of the mirth...
For once, Kohli's gambler's instinct pays off. Shows the margins between madness and genius are non-existent occasionally.
Hi is a decent cricketer but nothing special. He wont be a great cricketer however he is a utility cricketer.
True, wont be great but making the best use of what talents u have, knowing what you cant do and working on your skills can mean you have a good package. Rahul D once said he knew he wasnt the most talented guy around, but with his hard work and dedication he moullded himself - am not saying ST can be a great, but i admire how he holds each chance he gets dear and does a whole hearted attempt....and thats why i commented on the mirth he gets...
The first Test between England and India on 4 August at Trent Bridge will mark the beginning of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Overview:
England v India, first Test
Trent Bridge, Nottingham
4 August, 11:00 Local
India have had to deal with injury woes yet again on the England tour with Mayank Agarwal out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Avesh Khan are already ruled out of the whole series. However, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav are flying to England as replacements will give the visitors options for the second Test.
Rohit Sharma is now likely to open with KL Rahul, who has proved a strong contender after a hundred in the practice game against County Select XI. It also remains to be seen whether India will go in with two frontline spinners or think about adding a fourth pacer with the conditions in England favouring the seamers.
England, on the other hand, have a void to fill in the absence of Ben Stokes, who brought balance to the side. Sam Curran is the leading man in Stokes’ absence who can offer the same set of skills with the bat and ball. The hosts will also be without the services of Jofra Archer, who is recovering from an elbow surgery.
The wicket at Trent Bridge looks bowler-friendly with plenty of grass and with both teams rich in pace options, it might be a tightly-fought contest.
Remember the last time:
The two sides went head-to-head in a four-match Test series hosted by India in February this year. In the final Test, India dominated England with a comprehensive win by an innings and 25 runs, thus taking the series 3-1.
England batting first, posted 205 with Ben Stokes scoring the only fifty in the first innings. India then went on to post a lead of 160 with the help of Rishabh Pant’s 101 and Washington Sundar’s unbeaten 96* which proved more than enough for the visitors.
In England’s second innings, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin spun the web around the visitors as both took five wickets each. England were bowled out for 135 with Dan Lawrence scoring the highest – 50 off 95 balls.
What they said:
Joe Root (England captain): “It will be nice to start strongly from a personal point of view. I know if I go out there and score big runs, it gives us opportunities to win the game and those things look after themselves. But Test cricket is not about you, you as an individual. It’s about winning for England and that contributes something bigger than yourself. That’s the mindset going into this series. Hopefully, we can outplay India.”
Ajinkya Rahane (India vice-captain): “Playing away from home is always a challenge. It’s all about putting our best foot forward and getting used to the conditions quickly. I thought in 2018 we played very good cricket but the result didn’t go our way. This is the World Test Championship and so, every Test counts. Rather than focusing on the series, we will focus on one game at a time.”
Squads:
England Squad : Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root(c), Jonny Bairstow, Daniel Lawrence, Jos Buttler(w), Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Craig Overton, Sam Curran, Jack Leach, Dominic Bess, Ollie Pope, Haseeb Hameed

Trap set. and Well executed. Sibley has awful technique.
How in earth are Burns and Sibley opening for England. Surely better prospects in County.
Just back from watching an awesome 200m finals - De grasse - Wow...a champion at last.
