Joe Root's (128*) batting master-class takes England to 262/3 on Day 1 in 1st Test v India

I know the formula, bro
Its very easy
If opposition is scoring runs- bad captaincy
If opposition gets out- good captaincy

If batsman make runs- great captaincy
If batsman fail - bad captaincy.

This formula is true 99% of the times, people will see what they want to see.

Didn't like his formula of putting both Sundar and Shahbaz together to the two set batsman and leaking easy runs given that they looked the least effective of the whole group. Even when they were new to the crease, same was done. Kohli ain't a good tactician. A good leader and excellent speaker though.

Ganguly was a better test captain.

Possibly an extra seamer could have played by India either in that all rounder role which Washington (If Pandya was available) is in or over Nadeem?

Its his second test. He debuted against South Africa and bowled decent then. But was off-color today.

Yea didnt look particularly good, sundar his bowling gave away the advantage, all they had to do was keep it tight.

Jadeja is being missed.

I watched the first 20 overs of England batting and could not take it anymore. The pitch was hopelessly flat. This is a pitch made for full 5 days of boring draw with batsmen improving their average and pad their stats.

Chennai should not host a Test match unless they stop rolling flat beds.

Root brilliance frustrates India on opening day

Joe Root’s 100th Test has so far gone almost exactly as he’d have hoped – he scored a century to mark the occasion and, by stumps on the opening day in Chennai, England were 263/3.

Root scored a fine 128*, continuing his excellent form from Sri Lanka, where he scored a double-century and a century in two Tests. As for India, there was a consolation late in the day, when Jasprit Bumrah had Dom Sibley trapped in front on 87 to break a 200-run stand. However, the home side will be aware of the threat that England, with their long batting line-up, now pose.

Root opted to bat on a pitch that, despite initial assumptions, played out as among the more flatter first-day tracks. It wasn’t straightforward for the Indian bowlers, against batsmen determined to make themselves difficult to dislodge.

Sibley and Rory Burns almost ensured India had no joy in the first session. With their unique, unorthodox styles, they ploughed away at the Indian attack, notching up a 50-run opening partnership, and had it not been for Burns’ rush of blood, England may well have gone into the first break without losing a wicket.

As it turned out, Burns, in a bid to counter Ashwin’s line from over the wicket, attempted a reverse sweep. He missed it, and lobbed the easiest chance to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. The breakthrough exposed the young Dan Lawrence to Jasprit Bumrah, brought immediately back into the attack by Virat Kohli, and the paceman proved too good for the youngster on this occasion, jagging one in to trap him plumb in front.

England were 63/2, and in the few overs that remained before Lunch, India had their tail up. England did well to go in without losing another wicket.

Thereafter, it was all England, and that was down to some smart batting. Sibley and Root had their guard up against India’s experienced bowlers – Ashwin, Bumrah and Ishant Sharma – and only really attempted anything against them when the chance presented itself.

However, against Shahbaz Nadeem, the left-arm spinner, and offspinner Washington Sundar, both of whom were playing just their second Tests, they adopted a more assertive approach, particularly Root. He used his feet, he employed the sweep, and he ensured the runs never dried up. In doing so, England forced Kohli into turning to his senior bowlers more than he’d have liked.

While Sibley was watchful and conservative, albeit effective, Root was a joy to watch. Here was an England captain, playing some of his best cricket, on a landmark occasion. He brought up his half-century shortly after Sibley had done so himself, but then raced away – his 50 came in 110 deliveries, but he took just a further 54 deliveries to bring up his century.

It was all going swimmingly for England until the final over of the day, when Bumrah speared in a trademark yorker. Sibley didn’t see it coming, and was trapped in front. Perhaps hoping that it was sliding down leg, the opener reviewed the decision, only to be told it was clean – he was disappointed as he walked off, but on the whole, it was a good day for England.

So you missed Root fly from fifty to his hundred?

Pitch will break up. This test has the makings of a classic. India can get around parity. England could get skittled by Ashwin in the second dig, and India will be chasing 180 in the last innings.

I was expecting either Kuldeep or Siraj in the XI, Nadeem's selection came as a surprise, however he is a proven domestic performer so ain't complaining much about the selection. It is pretty common to see players not selected becoming fan favorites overnight after the team has bad day at the office.

If anything this just goes on to prove how valuable Jadeja is for the team. Also when the ball started reversing early in the day I was missing Umesh and Shami.

This is a Chennai pitch. It does not breakup. Somebody posted the last 4 Test matches played there. Batsmen making merry and bowlers having nightmares.

Amen. Hope that happens, with us winning.

Joe Root, who celebrated his 100th Test match with a brilliant unbeaten 128 on Friday, said his team would look to score as many as 600-700 runs in the first innings. In 2016, in the final Test in Chennai, England made 477 and still lost by an innings and 75 runs after India made 759 for 7 declared.

"We've got to look to try and get as many as we can - 600, 700 if we can, really try and make the most of the first innings while it's good," Root said. "Those footholes are starting to wear quite quickly. So, if we can bat the whole of tomorrow and maybe into day three, then things could speed up quite quickly for us and you never know what can happen from that point onwards."

"But ultimately we've got to try and back up today," he added. "It's been a really impressive start to things. But we've got to make it count and that's going to be the challenge for this team. We need to bat long periods of time in these conditions. That's all the focus will be on going into tomorrow."

Speaking about his own performance, the 30-year-old said, "I'm in some good form and I need to make sure I cash in on it," Root said. "Over the course of my career, I've not always gone on and made really big scores, so to be doing that currently is really pleasing."

high scoring matches still India won all those matches... some of them innings wins

even last match in 2016 England scored 477 batting first then India batted for 2 days scored 750 + runs and won by an innings

last day will be crucial

The kind of depth England have in batting they are likely to get solid scores , the main issue is whether they have depth in bowling to take 20 Indian wickets.

People keep talking about the 2016 series where England got smashed in spite of piling up big runs in the first innings, but this time around they have more bit in their bowling.

Anderson will keep it tight and if Archer is in his element, he can do damage on any surface. He is lethal.

The likes of Leach and Bess are average but they are not bottle-jobs like Moeen. Stokes can provide regular breakthroughs.

Moreover, Root is a better captain than Cook.

India is very likely to score big in the first innings as well, but they will have to bat really well unless there is an English collapse in the first two sessions tomorrow.

ya and last time jadeja took 7 for 40 odd in 2nd innings

Thank you India & Chennai's groundsmen for preparing a road: Michael Vaughan

Gonna have to see well into latter part of day 3 how this pitch starts behaving.

How have England scored runs?

Is this not a rank turner?

England need to get around 500. I don’t see Bess doing much, Leach is a decent spinner but he will need help.
