Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool need to find consistency to avoid missing out on a top-four finish in the Premier League after his side suffered a damaging defeat by struggling Leeds at Anfield.

Crysencio Summerville scored a dramatic late winner as Leeds won to move out of the relegation zone.

The defeat leaves Liverpool eight points adrift of Newcastle in fourth, albeit with a game in hand.

The Reds beat Premier League leaders Manchester City on 16 October but have since lost to bottom-of-the table Nottingham Forest and now Leeds.

"You can't qualify for the Champions League if you play as inconsistently as we do at the moment," Klopp said.

"We have to fix that."

Liverpool were hoping to build on their dominant 3-0 win at Ajax in the Champions League in midweek but they made the worst possible start against a Leeds side who started the day in the bottom three when a poor back pass by Joe Gomez was pounced on by Rodrigo, who poked into an empty net.

Liverpool responded well and equalised soon after when Mohamed Salah volleyed in from Andy Robertson's cross.

But Leeds, belying their lowly position in the table, showed great hunger in response to that equaliser and hit the woodwork through Brenden Aaronson.

Illan Meslier made great saves to deny Darwin Nunez one-on-one in the second half, before the Leeds goalkeeper also kept out a Roberto Firmino header.

And, in the final minute of normal time, Summerville picked up the ball from Patrick Bamford before firing across Alisson to send the away support wild.

The defeat - Liverpool's second in a row in the Premier League - means they are ninth while Leeds move up to 15th, four points behind the Reds.

One of the reasons for their struggles (to me) seems to be the form of Virgil van Dijk. He’s having an error strewn season and looking painfully uncompetitive & slow. Last night he again had a shocker & was at fault for both of the Leeds goals.

I agree with Souness. The problem lies with the ageing midfield who can no longer dominate like they did, plus constant injuries has slown down the likes of Henderson, Thiago, fabino and the opposition are constantly owerpowering the midfield and exposing a highline Liverpool defence.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has said "something's not going right" with Liverpool after they fell to a second successive Premier League defeat.

Liverpool were beaten 2-1 at home by Leeds on Saturday, a week after a shock 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest.

Defender Alexander-Arnold said the Reds still have self-belief, but said setbacks "potentially make you second-guess yourself and question things".

"Clearly as a team something's not going right," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"It's not going as well as we want it to go.

"That's something for everyone to think about, for everyone to address and make sure we put it right, especially next week against Spurs, top-four rivals.

"We kind of need to go there and get some points if we've got any chance of reaching our aims and aspirations for the season."

Crysencio Summerville scored a dramatic late winner at Anfield as Leeds won to move out of the relegation zone.

Defeat has left Liverpool eight points adrift of the top four, with a game in hand, before they visit third-placed Tottenham in the league next Sunday.

After that, they have one more Premier League fixture, at home to Southampton on 12 November, before the competition stops for just over six weeks to make way for the World Cup in Qatar.

Jurgen Klopp's side have won four, drawn four and lost four so far this season with 16 points. At this stage in the last campaign, Liverpool had 25 points and had lost just once.

"I think we are not in the greatest run of form - I think a lot of players would say that about themselves and as a team in general," added Alexander-Arnold, who was replaced by James Milner during the Leeds defeat.

"I think it's important for us to regroup, assess what's going wrong. I think right now, it's kind of, 'pick up as many points as you can now going into this break'.

"And potentially this break will come at a decent time for us to reset and be able to get our heads straight to go into the second half of the season."

Well Trent your schoolboy defending is one thing that is dragging us down. Another thing is Jurgen not buying a few midfielder's insisting all was well until the last minute then he goes out for Melo. A panic buy who is now injured as is half of our team at most times it seems. VVD has not been the same since he returned from injury either then there are the constant absentee's in the form of Keita and the useless Ox Chemberlain. Add to this is Jota and Diaz who are also on the treatment table leaving us the past their sell by date Hendo, Milner, Thiago and the unimaginative Curtis in the middle. Only Elliot is any good at the moment.

The owners are not without fault either giving pittance to the manager to spend in the market compared to the top clubs in the league. Mane must have sensed something was not right that he left just in time to avoid this disaster. Other then that Jurgen Klopp also needs to analyse his over demanding training methods that could be the reason why half of our team is always injured. We are only playing for the cup competition's now this season. Only ten games in to the season and the mighty are closer to relegation to competing for the title...what a disaster. All said i do feel Jurgen Klopp is the right man for us.

Fabinho ’s poor form this season continued against Leeds and he cut a very frustrated figure in the middle of the park as a result. On two occasions, such emotions got the better of him.

After Harvey Elliott lost possession inside his own half, the audible discontent from the Anfield crowd was particularly noticeable before the Brazilian halted the subsequent Leeds attack. Unimpressed by such a reaction however, he turned to fans and gestured for a different response, demanding support for the teenager rather than grumbles.

Alas, they didn’t get the message with the likes of Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones treated to similar treatment throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Fabinho was also involved in a heated clash with Jurgen Klopp inside the first half as the German made his own feelings clear about Liverpool’s disappointing performance.

With Leeds getting through the Reds’ midfield with far too much ease, Fabinho was the subject of Klopp’s frustrations following one animated outburst in the 38th minute. While such scenes from the Liverpool boss aren’t uncommon during matches, the midfielder’s reaction perhaps was.

Rather than take his medicine, Fabinho was clearly unimpressed at being the focus of his manager’s attention. Rather than offer a thumbs up or hand to acknowledge Klopp’s point, the exasperated midfield instead just shook his head. This only prompted Klopp to erupt further, with another exchange, though not as heated, happening moments later.

Fabinho would again be shaking his head on the hour-mark when replaced by Jordan Henderson, though he did at least exchange a slap of the hand with Klopp as he made his way to the dugout.

Late goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Napoli but the Italians still finished top dogs in Champions League Group A.

Considering what we paid for him Nunez has been somewhat disappointing. Yeah we defeated Napoli in what again was a rather unconvincing performance. Liverpool fans know the main problem is the ageing midfield needs a revamp. I don't think the American owners are willing to finance Jurgen the way he wants to be. We need serious money to rebuild again if we are to be seen as contenders for the title in the coming seasons. Now as well as Man City even the likes of Arsenal and Man Utd are ahead of us.

The Football Association has appealed against the sanction given to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp following his sending off during his side's win over Manchester City last month.

Klopp received a £30,000 fine from an independent regulatory commission but no touchline ban.

He was dismissed after berating a referee's assistant when a foul was not given for a challenge on Mohamed Salah.

The German later apologised for his reaction in his post-match comments.

Klopp was charged with a breach of FA rule E3, which covers "comments which are improper, which bring the game into disrepute, which are threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting".

The FA confirmed on Friday it was appealing after it reviewed the commission's written reasons.

Klopp's red card was among a series of incidents which prompted a referees' charity to call for an inquiry into the touchline behaviour of managers.

Ref Support UK said such behaviour was being replicated in the grassroots game "and perpetuates the idea that it is OK to do it".

Good win away at Spurs. 2-1 Liverpool

Now we need to go on a decent run.

Mohamed Salah struck twice in the first half as Liverpool secured their first away win in the Premier League this season with victory at Tottenham.

Liverpool had lost their two previous league games to struggling Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, so manager Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with this win at Spurs, who are shaping up as rivals for a place in the top four.

Salah was the inspiration, sweeping home a sharp left-foot finish from Darwin Nunez's pass after 11 minutes, then cashing in on Eric Dier's misplaced headed back-pass to double Liverpool's advantage with great composure five minutes before the break.

Spurs, without the injured Son Heung-min, were never out of the game as Ivan Perisic hit the woodwork either side of half-time before Harry Kane pulled one back with 20 minutes remaining. But they failed to complete one of the comebacks that have become their trademark this season.

Liverpool got their stuttering season back in some sort of shape with the Champions League win against Napoli in midweek to reach the last 16 once again, although in reality the match was little more than a dead rubber.

This victory carried greater significance because of the opposition and also the need to get their Premier League show back on the road after two damaging losses.

Salah showed he is right back to his best after a slow start to the campaign. Both goals featured different elements of a goalscoring masterclass, the first with one touch and an instant finish, the second showing coolness and technique to make Dier pay for his error.

Liverpool also rode their luck as those Perisic efforts hit the woodwork, and Trent Alexander-Arnold was fortunate to escape when Spurs appeals for a penalty were waved away after he appeared to push Ryan Sessegnon to the ground. They are still conceding too many chances.

Nunez was a tireless, constant threat, while Ibrahima Konate's return has added steel to a Liverpool defence that has been vulnerable at times this season. Goalkeeper Alisson was, as usual, reliability and excellence personified, and the reaction at the final whistle demonstrated just how important this win might be for Liverpool.

'Did well to get the three points'

FT: Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool

Two-goal Mohamed Salah, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "I think we were lucky in the first half, we played quite good and managed to score two goals. In the second half we could've scored but were unlucky.

"We did well to get the three points. It is always a tough opponent. I'm focused on making a difference and managed to do so today.

"We managed to strike back a few times in the season, have played some good games."

Salah scoring a brace in a first half that was dominated by us. Spurs came back strong in the second half as expected getting a good equalizer through Harry Kane. With both Chelsea and Man Utd losing we have gained some points against teams in front of us. Need a win versus Southampton before the World Cup break then sign some players in the January window.

So they will face their papa Madrid in the UCL R16. :klopp

Last time, they brought Liverpool back to earth and after the players and the fans thought they would walk over Madrid.

This time around, Liverpool is already in tatters and the UCL was the only opportunity for them to salvage something from this disastrous reason.

Too bad they ran into papa who is going to rinse them again. :)))

The owners of Liverpool FC have said they are open to offers, raising the prospect of the club being sold.

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which also owns the Boston Red Sox, bought the club in 2010, with it going on to win the Premier League in 2019-20 and the Champions League in 2019.

In a statement FSG said: "There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group's ownership in Liverpool.

"FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

"FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch."

FSG has looked at other opportunities in the past but nothing has ever come of them.

The club has seen great success under manager Jurgen Klopp and Anfield itself has also benefited under FSG.

The ground has a new £110m Main Stand and works continues on the £80m Anfield Road Stand which is due to finish next summer.

Real Madrid is a club I would have liked to avoid. Now that we have drawn them we'll give them a great two matches even though they start as favourites. With the second tie at their place will make it even more difficult for us considering we are not in the best of the forms at the moment.

Now that the club is for sale it is exciting times for Liverpool FC. Don't want any Arab's with their abysmal human rights record in charge of the club I love. Jim Ratcliffe would be my first choice had he not been a Man Utd supporter. It is gonna be so interesting to see who the new owners of this legendary club are or are FSG simply wanting new investors?

Ideally LFC fans want someone with deep pockets who respect human rights as well. British owners with these values would be the preferred choice.

I don't want oil or blood money to own my club.

This means potentially no signings come January which is bad news.

Liverpool's future direction is uncertain after the owners said they would "consider new shareholders" following reports the club is for sale.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300m, is "inviting offers" for the club, reported The Athletic.

Here we look at the background to a potential sale of one of the world's biggest football clubs, which could fetch an estimated £4bn.

How successful has the FSG era been?
The American company, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team, said it "remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch".

Eight trophies have been won in 12 years since they took over at Anfield, including six under Jurgen Klopp.

He was brought in as manager in 2015, helped change the environment at the club and has delivered a Champions League trophy and their first league title for 30 years.

Liverpool have signed the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, at the time the world's most expensive defender and goalkeeper respectively, as well as developing 'bargain' buys like Mohamed Salah into world-class talents.

While most of the £300m was used to pay off debts to the banks run up by predecessors George Gillett and Tom Hicks, by the end of the 2017-18 financial year the club had posted record post-tax profits of £106m.

The owners ditched plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park to remain at Anfield, and provided a £115m loan for the redevelopment of the Main Stand, which was completed in September 2016 and extended capacity to 54,000

Redevelopment to add a further 7,000 seats to the Anfield Road end is on track to be completed next summer, while a new training ground has been built at a cost of £50m.

What has gone wrong?

While there have been successes on the pitch, there have been controversies too.

A proposed ticket price increase in 2016 and plans to place non-playing staff on the government's furlough scheme during the Covid-19 lockdown both sparked anger and U-turns.

An attempt to trademark the word "Liverpool" was rejected by the Intellectual Property Office.

And the club's involvement in failed plans for the creation of a European Super League brought further criticism.

Liverpool were Premier League runners-up last season, but they are currently eighth in the table.

It has become increasingly difficult for clubs to compete financially with sides backed by wealthy states, such as Paris St-Germain (Qatar), Manchester City (Abu Dhabi) and Newcastle (Saudi Arabia)

"There are three clubs in world football who can do what they want financially. It's legal and everything, fine, but they can do what they want," said Klopp before Liverpool faced City last month.

"We have to look at it [and say] 'we need that and we need that and we have to look here and make it younger, and here a prospect and here a talent'.

In August, Klopp admitted he wanted Liverpool "to risk a bit more" in the transfer market.

Why would they sell now?

Kieran Maguire, football finance expert

It means some of the tentative interest they have had over the last two to three years has prompted them to try to test out the market. Is there someone willing to take over now?

There were over 200 bidders for Chelsea and that was a distressed asset. FSG will have noted that and, given that Liverpool is a very big brand, they will have done their sums with a view to making a significant return on the initial £300m.

I think as far as we are concerned at present, they will either go for a whole sale or they'll hold on to try to extract more money and more value from Liverpool in the next few years.

FSG have proven to be very astute in developing Liverpool as a brand and also introducing the 'Moneyball' concept around player recruitment and retention which means Liverpool have had success over the last seven or eight years whilst spending half a billion less than Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Whether any future owners will be able to repeat the FSG model will be a concern for supporters.

The names of the banks being linked to the club are very serious players.

Who could buy them?

Maguire believes there is around a 60% chance Liverpool will be sold before the end of the season.

"It will probably mainly be American investors looking at the club," said Maguire, a football finance lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

"The pound is weak at present, which makes that deal even more attractive, if those investors are coming from overseas.

"The Chinese government has dissuaded its corporations from investing in football, so that's one area which has disappeared."

Premier League rivals Chelsea were sold for £4.25bn in May to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

The club was put up for sale before previous owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

"Chelsea's price of £4.25bn included a commitment of £1.75bn spending across the next decade so effectively the price was £2.5bn," said Maguire.

"When you factor in Liverpool has the bigger stadium and bigger revenues and cost controls, the numbers coming out for them are somewhere between £3.5bn and £4bn depending on the level of interest in the club.

"I'm not sure there are many domestically that would realistically have close to £4bn to buy Liverpool."

What do the fans think?

There will be mixed opinions but the most important thing is fans are consulted, said the Anfield Wrap's Harriet Prior.

"People are really surprised at the news. It's quite unnerving and unsettling, and we are probably set for a more turbulent few months than people were expecting," she said.

"There is split opinion. Fans would love to have no ceiling when it comes to transfers, but would be reluctant for Liverpool to be owned by a state and what comes with that.

"FSG have had a successful reign and it could be a case of being careful what you wish for.

"It's fair to say Liverpool are a team in transition and if the next period is concentrated on the ownership, it could have an effect on the pitch.

"Whatever happens, fans' voices need to be heard."

Liverpool's supporters' union, Spirit of Shankly, has written to the club asking for clarification over the potential sale.

"We expect both the Supporters Board and SOS to be engaged in some part of the process so that supporters are front and centre of any sale and the first thoughts of prospective owners," it said.

Nathan Jones' Southampton reign got off to a losing start as Liverpool signed off for the break for the World Cup with a comfortable win at Anfield.

Roberto Firmino put the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Brazil squad for Qatar behind him by heading the Reds ahead before Saints equalised through the unmarked Che Adams.

In an entertaining game, two goals by Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez before half-time put Liverpool in control.

Nunez, one of seven Reds players heading for the World Cup as it stands, made it 2-1 when he poked past Gavin Bazunu from close range before tapping home the third after Andy Robertson's assist.

Liverpool would have won by more but for two outstanding stops by Bazunu, the 20-year-old denying both Mohamed Salah and Firmino at close range.

Reds keeper Alisson also produced a quality save to keep out Adams' header in the 77th-minute.

Ambani, with a net worth of around £90billion and rated by Forbes as the eighth richest person in the world, has already enquired about the club.

But he will have to fight off interest from other parties from the Middle East and the USA with Liverpool's current owners Fenway Sports Group having been swamped with tentative offers.

It's understood they are willing to sell for £4bn and there is a greater desire to buy the Merseyside club outright.

But that figure won't put off Ambani who is a huge sports fan.

He owns IPL cricket giants Mumbai Indians and helped to set up Indian football's Super League.

While cricket is a religion in India, football is rapidly catching up with the English Premier League creating huge interest and Liverpool one of the biggest supported clubs with shirt sales going through the roof.

Ambani, 65, with his enormous wealth and desire for success would be prepared to pump millions into the club for transfers to enhance Liverpool’s ambitions of remaining as one of Europe's most successful clubs.

After completing the purchase of Mumbai Indians he was labelled 'The World's Richest Sports Team Owner' which will be music to Liverpool fans, some of whom believe FSG have not fully backed manager Jurgen Klopp in the transfer market.

But Ambani won't have the negotiating table to himself once interest from Dubai, Bahrain and the USA hardens which is great news for FSG co-founder John W Henry and his associates.

Fenway employed investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to test the water over possible investment in the club or a complete takeover.

Can't blame Reliance to keep things under the wraps so far. They tried to buy LFC in 2010 with joint partnership of Subroto Roy (owner of Sahara group who was later jailed for duping millions of people) and it didn't work out.
I wonder how subcontinent's Muslim fans of the club will feel with Ambani as owner as he is very close to Indian PM Narendra Modi and both are accused of helping each other with Ambani funding Modi's campaigns and Modi tweaking business policies in Reliance's favor.

Jones signs new Liverpool contract

Curtis Jones has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool.

Sky Sports understands the length of the deal is until the summer of 2027.

Jones only signed his last contract in July 2020 having initially come through the Academy system.

His latest deal is a reflection of his ongoing development, status within the first team squad and importance to the manager.

It is also in keeping with the club's strategy to acquire and retain the best available young talent. Harvey Elliott, 19, and Joe Gomez, 25, are among the most recent renewals.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has confirmed the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are looking at selling the Reds.

FSG recently said it "would consider new shareholders" amid reports it had put the Merseysiders up for sale.

"We're exploring a sale, but there's no urgency, no time frame for us, and as far as I'm concerned, it's business as usual," Werner told the Boston Globe.

"One outcome could be our continued stewardship for quite a while."

FSG bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010.

Werner is one of the founders of FSG, whose principal owner is John Henry, and has been the company's chairman since it was formed in 2001.

Basketball star LeBron James has been a part-owner of Liverpool since 2011 and has a 2% stake, which cost him £4.7m.

He has since become a minor partner in FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

In March 2021, RedBird Capital Partners, a private investment firm, bought a stake in FSG for about $735m (£533m).

Luis Diaz: Liverpool winger suffers injury setback with Jurgen Klopp calling it a 'smash in the face'

Luis Diaz has suffered an injury during Liverpool's training camp in the United Arab Emirates, with Jurgen Klopp describing it as a "proper smash in the face".

Diaz has been absent since suffering a knee injury in Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at Arsenal on October 9 but was preparing for his return during the Reds' warm-weather camp.

However, the winger sustained a setback last week, with Jurgen Klopp saying: "He was not in the best possible place.

"It's clear it's a big disappointment for all of us, for him as well.

"It was a non-situation in training, honestly. Nothing [then he] felt something. [He] didn't feel a lot [the] next day but we wanted to be really cautious and said, 'OK, come on, let's have a look.'

"Then the news came and it was a proper smash in the face. But that's it now."

Klopp said at the time of Diaz's original injury that the situation was "not good".

The Colombia international scored four goals and assisted three in the 12 matches he played before getting injured.

Liverpool were able to cope with Diaz's absence before the World Cup break, winning eight of the 10 matches he missed as they secured progress to the last-16 of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, while they are sixth in the Premier League.

Diaz's latest injury leaves Liverpool with only Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino as the fit senior forwards at Jurgen Klopp's disposal, with Diogo Jota also currently sidelined with a calf injury.

The manager will also be able to call on Fabio Carvalho, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as potential attacking reinforcements from within his squad.

Elliott also suffered an injury scare during Liverpool's 3-1 friendly defeat to Lyon on Sunday, coming off in the 29th minute, but Klopp had better news regarding his fitness.

"Harvey got a knock before we scored but I think we were lucky," he said. "He looks fine now but he feels it, that's normal.

"There was contact but I hope we were lucky in that moment."

Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp laughs off Jude Bellingham links but 'prepared' for January window

Jurgen Klopp laughed off suggestions Liverpool could sign Jude Bellingham in January but admitted the club are "prepared" for the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with sought-after Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham to freshen up their ageing midfield.

But asked whether any deal for the 19-year-old would only have to be done in the summer instead of next month, Klopp laughed: "In January? I'm the wrong person to answer that."

However, the Reds boss did reveal the club are ready for the January window to open.

"January, in our situation, is a window from a sports side we are always prepared, it's always clear what kind of ideas we have or how the necessity is from our point of view," he added with Liverpool set to face Aston Villa in their first Premier League match since the World Cup.

"All the rest doesn't lie 100 per cent in our hands and we always work with what we've got, and that will not change.

"You can imagine the situation we are in that we are probably looking. If something happens, we will see."

Ahead of Liverpool's 3-2 defeat to title rivals Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher said Liverpool need to invest up to £250m in their squad to compete at the top of the Premier League again.

But the former Reds defender fears the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, do not have the funds to sign the targets that Klopp requires with FSG open to investment" in the Merseyside club - although there are reports they want to sell - and Carragher believes this is a sign they are making moves to meet Klopp's demands.

Quizzed on if he thought Carragher's £250m estimation was accurate, Klopp said: "I don't know about the amount of money you need exactly but I'm not against investment. We will see what the future brings, nobody knows that at the moment, but I'm still convinced it will be good, the future is bright for us.

"But at the moment we have to sort the situation. Nothing to do with any kind of future investment or investors, we have to sort the present and that's what we're working on."

We cannot think now too much about the summer. He was not match fit before the break - but now he is. Unfortunately he was ill before the Manchester City game otherwise he would have started there as well."

On Liverpool's aims for the rest of the season: "We have to qualify for the Champions League. Obviously there is some distance. When I say we are within punching distance it is a long arm still. It makes sense that we give absolutely everything to do it otherwise we would suffer watching the others next year.

"Aston Villa today is as tough a start it gets. A new manager and a long time without football. They will be on their toes but we will do everything to get three points here today."

Liverpool made a winning return to Premier League action as they restarted their bid to force their way into the top four with an entertaining victory over Aston Villa.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Stefan Bajcetic ensured the Reds recorded a third successive league win for the first time this season and reduced the gap to the Champions League places to five points.

While Liverpool's first fixture after the World Cup break resulted in a Carabao Cup fourth round defeat by Manchester City on Thursday, Salah's fifth-minute opener - created by a couple of sublime passes from full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson - gave them the perfect start on their league return.

Darwin Nunez's wastefulness prevented the visitors from extending their lead but they were able to add a second before half-time when Van Dijk's shot deflected in off Ezri Konsa following a corner.

Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey had both squandered a couple of fine opportunities for Villa in a hugely entertaining first half but Unai Emery's side were rewarded for their persistence after the restart when Watkins headed in Douglas Luiz's cross.

However, Spanish teenager Bajcetic's first senior Liverpool goal nine minutes from time, which followed great work by Nunez to recover the ball at the byeline, ended home hopes of a dramatic fightback at Villa Park.

Heavily linked with Man-U so this is a bit of a surprise

Once Diaz/Jota are fit that's some depth in the attacking positions for Liverpool

They've snatched him out of nowhere. £37m is a great price.

Cody Gakpo: Liverpool agree to sign forward, say PSV Eindhoven

Liverpool have agreed to sign Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, say the Dutch club.

Gakpo, 23, had an impressive World Cup in Qatar, scoring three goals as he helped the Netherlands reach the quarter-finals.

The fee for the winger is expected to be between 40m-50m euros (£35.4m-£44.3m).

PSV say Gakpo will travel to England to complete the deal, adding that it would be a record transfer for them.

Liverpool have made a move with forwards Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota facing lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Gakpo.

"The PSV management completed the negotiations on Boxing Day and gave Gakpo permission to travel to England," said a statement from the Eredivisie side.

Gakpo has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists in 14 league games for PSV.

He has also managed three goals and registered two assists in five Europa League outings.

At the World Cup, he scored in each of his country's group games against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.

Liverpool beat Aston Villa 3-1 on Monday as they returned to Premier League action; manager Jurgen Klopp's side are sixth in the top flight.

Reds defender Virgil van Dijk, an international team-mate, spoke glowingly about the winger during the World Cup.

"Hopefully Cody can go to the moon and back," said Van Dijk during the tournament in Qatar. "He is a very good player and a good boy too.

"What we see in training is what you see on the pitch. There is still so much potential and I hope he can carry on showing it for us. We are very happy with him."

Cody who??. Don't know much about this lad. I was hoping we'd sign a classy midfielder instead we are targeting a forward. Seems we are losing out on Jude to Real and Enzo to Man Utd too:sarf_facepalm. On a positive note we played well versus Villa with a 1-3 win in what is a difficult place to visit. All said and done I trust in Jurgen Klopp!

Who is to say you won't sign a midfielder as well?

Though it's interesting to see the stacked forward lineup Liverpool have now yet Moany Klopp reckons they can't compete with little old Newcastle

A manager should never be happy with what he has. Sulking is good for a manager like JK mostly does. Other more wealthier top sides are also in for our other midfield targets Enzo and Jude. Also linked is Moroccan Sofyan Amrabat who could be the one we sign in Jan. The other two are for the summer if we do sign them at all.

Man Utd must already be very disappointed losing Cody to us so they'll go in much harder for players both clubs want in the future.

Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

The deal is worth 40-50m euros (£35.4m-£44.3m) and the Eredivisie club say it is a record transfer fee for them.

Gakpo, 23, will officially join Liverpool at the start of the January transfer window and his contract will run until the summer of 2028.

"I'm looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club," said Gakpo.

"I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years.

"I think for me personally it's also good to develop here and there's a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from."

Gakpo, whose transfer is subject to a work permit, arrives following an impressive 2022 World Cup in which he scored three goals as he helped his side reach the quarter-finals.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has added Gakpo to his ranks with forwards Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota facing lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Looking forward to what Cody bhai will bring to the side. From what I have read he is a skillful player capable of playing as a winger or forward. With Salah, Nunez, Diaz, Firmino, Jota and now Cody we are well taken care up front. It is in the middle of the park where Jurgen saheb needs to sign a few. It would be a dream if Jude and Enzo would come in while Ox and Keita head for the exit door. In Ben Doak signed from Celtic it seems we are on to a top class player too.

It is imperative that the mighty Liverpool finish in the top four.

Your forward line up is now stacked (obviously there are couple of injuries to contend with)

It's midfield you need to target, if you can get 1/2 top players with their best years ahead of them then I think we'll see a period where you are very competitive again

Klopp needs to recycle the squad and I believe he will do it, he's too good not to

And you'll definitely finish top 4 imo, I think you'll get 3rd

Jurgen Klopp says Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk had a role in the signing of Cody Gakpo, but felt the draw of joining Liverpool was the key factor.

The Reds have agreed to sign the Dutch forward from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth 40-50m euros (£35.4m-£44.3m).

Gakpo, 23, starred at the recent World Cup in Qatar, scoring three goals as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals.

"We didn't need Virgil to convince him," said Klopp.

"Virgil was involved from a specific moment on, but we didn't talk to him because there was no reason for it when I was allowed to speak to him.

"Some of these nice moments when you are manager of Liverpool and you think you have to convince someone, but when you speak to them you realise the door is wide open - that this is more or less a home run."

I think Bobby Firmino will be leaving in the summer. Sure thing we need class in midfield. We are carrying to many injury prone players past their sell by date like Ox and Keita. Milly is also a bit part player now as well. Jude is our top target, we are also linked with Enzo and Amrabat.

From here on we can not afford to drop too many points if we are to finish in the top four.

Liverpool 2-1 Leicester

Wout Faes scored two own goals as Liverpool came from behind to beat Leicester in their final Premier League game of 2022.

The Foxes made the ideal start when they took the lead after just four minutes as poor defending by the hosts allowed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to race through on goal before firing past Alisson.

Both sides had opportunities to score after that in an open and entertaining first half but Liverpool's equaliser came in hugely fortuitous circumstances.

With seven minutes to go the break, Faes stuck out a boot to try and divert Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross behind but instead the ball looped over goalkeeper Danny Ward and into the back of the net.

It got worse for Faes and Leicester seconds before the break when the defender again managed to put the ball into the back of his own net, this time firing in after Darwin Nunez's chipped shot had bounced back off the post.

It was the tonic Liverpool needed and they really should have put the game out of Leicester's reach in the second half, with Mohamed Salah putting a decent chance wide of the post with only Ward to beat while Nunez also failed to make the most of a couple of decent opportunities.

In the end, Faes' two own goals were enough to give Liverpool the victory that moves them to within two points of the top four.

Defeat for Leicester, meanwhile, means they remain 13th and four points above the relegation zone.

Bit of a struggle against Leicester. At this point three points is all that matters even if the goal's are two own ones. Now the attention turns to the January transfer window where I expect us too be very active. We need a few quality midfielders for sure.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "I have no news [on Cody Gakpo]. We hope he gets permission tomorrow to train fully with us, that would be great but that's all I know."

On performance against Leicester: "We have talked about it. We need to make sure we all know exactly what we wanted and what we did. But it's always the same when you have another night to sleep on it you realise Leicester actually did really well.

"I's the Premier League, yes we took it as a positive that we came through, but today it will be a tough test again with all the intensity that Brentford put in, so let's see.

"We have to be really prepared arriving here after playing every three days and you cannot do the preparation anywhere close to what they can do. But I respect Brentford because they use the time off really well.

"Thomas Frank said it himself, against the top six they do not care about possession so it will be a very direct style."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports on captain Jordan Henderson's absence: "Jordan has a concussion, it's normal procedure. It's not massive but we always follow the protocols.

"The next day we did a test and it was not 100% so we follow the protocol. He will be ready for the next game again but not for this."

Liverpool 1-0 down and playing absolute dross, need to pick this up.

Liverpool look done, 2-0 down and also been let off with two offside decisions which could have made it 4. Still celebrating New Year? Just not at the races today and this is without Toney playing.

This Nunez guy just can't score even when presented with a gilt edged chance! Missing Mane big time.

Gapko will solve some of your problems, PL will suit his style of play.

KingKhanWC - good 1st half by Liverpool vs Brentford. You must have the Mihai out celebrating

3-1 down now lol, Brentford proving to be a bogey team yet again, bye bye Liverpool.

KingKhanWC - bottling in Europa league spot game vs brentford

Truly awful tonight.

Should and could have been more than 3-1.

All over the place.

KingKhanWC - care to explain on this world class performance? :)))

An absolute eyesore of a performance from Liverpool tonight, particularly in the first half.

Only the second team to lose to Brentford in the Premier League when Ivan Toney wasn’t playing.

Looked miles off it.
