A lot of players have downed tools like salah, konate, VVD. Any new manager coming in will have huge job rebuilding liverpools defence.

Liverpools neglect in summer when it comes to not signing top quality CBs will now cause longterm damage for a few seasons

There are too many gaps to fill in midfield and defence, and they have already spent £400 million albeit selling proven quality to recoup something, you just have to look at the bench and it gives you an indication of how poor the squad actually is.

I think leaving Gheui transfer till last minute was naive and silly from Liverpool board. Only way to salvage it now, would be to maybe sign van der ven, romero or murillo in summer. That has to be priority for Liverpool above anything else
 
Imagine down talking a team that is playing rubbish and were rightfully schooled by a team that schooled your own team in a cup final and then get knocked out by a team you were 100% certain you would beat.

Expected city to win, after all, they made a quality Arsenal team look poor in a cup final and Liverpool are a poor team.

How did it come to this?

A year ago today, Liverpool fans were still basking in the glow of a Merseyside derby win that took them to the brink of the Premier League title.

Defeat at Fulham a couple of days later was merely a blip and before the month was through, it was sunshine and champagne at Anfield as the league was won with a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham.

Celebrations on the pitch and in the stands were long and loud, while outside the ground and across the city the party raged even longer and louder.

As fans went through the whole repertoire of songs, the name of Arne Slot was bellowed with gusto having taken on the impossible job of replacing Jurgen Klopp and then leading Liverpool to glory in his first season in charge.

Nobody that day would have believed that less than 12 months on, a fanbase so united behind its team and its manager would be, at best, apathetic as to whether Slot remains in the job.

Saturday's harrowing 4-0 defeat at Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals was just the latest in an ever-growing list of dismal days for Liverpool and their supporters in a season most cannot wait to see the back of.

It was the 15th loss in all competitions for the Reds this term, their most in a single season since losing 18 times under Brendan Rodgers in 2014-15.

"You're getting sacked in the morning," was the chant directed at Slot by the gleeful City supporters as their side scored four goals in 20 minutes either side of half-time.

While many of those who had stuck it out in the away end to hear it may have agreed with the sentiment, there remains no indication that the club are planning to get rid of Slot, either now or at the end of the season.

"It cannot always go positive and you have to stand up when things are not so positive and that's what it is about now," the Dutchman told TNT Sports.

Slot may retain the support of his superiors at Liverpool for now but their capitulation at the Etihad means the pressure has been ramped up further before a huge Champions League quarter-final first leg at Paris St-Germain on Wednesday.

The manner of the loss at City does little to inspire confidence they can avoid a similar outcome against the European champions, who so ruthlessly tore Chelsea apart in the last round.

Having started brightly and more than matched Pep Guardiola's side for the first 35 minutes, Liverpool unravelled after going behind to an Erling Haaland penalty.

The Norway striker's second on the stroke of half-time effectively killed the game, and two quick goals after the break made absolutely sure.

"The fighting spirit wasn't there enough, the mentality wasn't there enough," Liverpoolmidfielder Dominik Szoboszlai told TNT Sports.

Meanwhile, Slot told BBC Sport that "there are many recurring themes" across the season.

Chief among them is the seeming inability to absorb a blow and come back fighting.

All too often this campaign, the slightest of setbacks has appeared to derail Liverpoolwhen things had been going well - a far cry from the "mentality monsters" Klopp lauded during his time in charge.

"Arne Slot has to get the players to be better versions of what they are," former Liverpoolstriker Robbie Fowler said on TNT Sports.

"You need leaders to drag people through tough times. That's what you need but we are not seeing that from the manager."

Klopp also spoke about turning fans from "doubters to believers" when he first took charge but given the mass exodus from the away end as City quickly turned 2-0 to 4-0 in the second half, there is little belief remaining for Slot's side at present.

After losing at Brighton two weeks ago, Liverpool and Slot would have hoped that the international break would have provided the reset required before one final push until the end of the season.

The announcement that Mohamed Salah will leave in the summer, while significant, was not a surprise and had the potential to galvanise fans and players alike to give a club legend a memorable send off.

On top of that, the return of club-record signing Alexander Isak to team training after more than three months out provided another boost.

But 92 minutes in Manchester quickly did for any such optimism, with the number of potential trophies that might garnish Salah's farewell swiftly halved.

Even a consolation goal was beyond them as Salah saw his second-half penalty saved - a moment Slot admitted "probably sums us up today and probably large parts of our season".

"To get embarrassed like they did today is going to stick with them," ex-Aston Villastriker Dion Dublin added on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Difficult as it is, though, Slot must find a way to rally his players before kick-off in Paris on Wednesday evening.

Another abject defeat could end Liverpool's hopes of progressing even before the second leg, at which point the season would become solely about trying to scrape back into the Champions League next season.

For all the mitigation that Slot can point to for the issues this season - injury problems, a severely disrupted pre-season, an unbalanced squad and, above all, the tragic death of Diogo Jota - failure to do so would leave him extremely vulnerable.

"We have to react to this defeat and this disappointing season," he said. "There is a chance for us on Wednesday. We have shown today for only 35 minutes that we can compete.

"We can take positives from those 35 minutes but if we defend like the 20 minutes afterwards we will have a big problem. That is what we have to address."

Time is fast running out for Slot to find those solutions and salvage something from Liverpool's season.

What that means for his future remains to be seen but those joyous scenes of last spring certainly seem a long time ago now.

'We've become quite experienced in negativity'

Arne Slot says Liverpool have no chance against Paris St-Germain unless they turn up for 90 minutes - after disagreeing with Virgil van Dijk's comments about the team giving up.

Captain Van Dijk criticised his team-mates after last Saturday's 4-0 capitulation against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

"You shouldn't give up and that's maybe, at a certain point, what happened," said Van Dijk after Liverpool's 15th defeat of the season.

The Reds are under pressure to bounce back when they face European champions PSG in the Champions League quarter-final first leg in the French capital on Wednesday (20:00 BST kick-off).

Slot has warned his side they have to play much better or face another crushing defeat.

"I didn't see players giving up, but I also think it is good from a captain that he has a strong and firm reaction," Slot said at a news conference in Paris on Tuesday.

"This year we have been quite experienced in terms of negativity. This was a big one because it was a [FA Cup] quarter-final. It was a big loss against our rivals."

Liverpool conceded four times inside 20 minutes either side of half-time against City.

"I can tell you if we have the 20 minutes we had at City tomorrow evening here, we will again concede four goals," added Slot.

"So it is a challenge for us to be from the first to the last second at the level we were at in the first 35 minutes [against City]."

'We believe in the manager' - Wirtz

Last April, Slot's Liverpool were celebrating a Premier League title triumph. This April, they are fighting to save their season.

Despite the success of his first campaign in charge, Slot is under enormous pressure to deliver Champions League football for next season - either by winning it this term or qualifying through the Premier League.

"Yes, of course we are believing in the manager," said Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz on Tuesday.

"The team should believe in the manager because they won the league last season, we had a lot of good games this season.

"We wanted it to be better but we still have things to play for."

Slot was asked how he was handling the pressure and what his players needed to do to salvage the season.

"The answer is already in the history of Liverpool," said the Dutchman.

"This group has shown many times that they have come back after setbacks and this club has shown it many, many times over the years.

"My team has shown many times in big games that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe."

Will fit-again Isak feature in Paris?

Paris St-Germain have a knack of beating Premier League clubs.

Since the start of last season, the Ligue 1 leaders have defeated Manchester City, Aston Villa, Arsenal (twice), Tottenham, Chelsea (twice) and Liverpool.

They have spent this campaign trying to replicate what they did last season and, in recent weeks, there have been signs they are starting to do just that.

They ran away with the tie against Chelsea in the last round, winning 8-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool have £125m club record signing Alexander Isak available again after recovering from surgery on a damaged ankle.

Isak has not featured since December, but the club record signing has travelled to Paris and could feature.

"He can play a part otherwise I wouldn't have brought him," added Slot, who is set to make changes with Jeremie Frimpong and Alexis Mac Allister in line for recalls.

If it was a strategy of, let us take it back to anfield still in the tie- sure, but the team is playing poorly.

Absolutely horrible….
 
This was a truly shocking match, 26% possession. Crazy. And too from a squad who overspent in attack and underspent in defense. You have to play to your strengths and parking the bus with a defense as bad as this right now doesn’t sound like the right idea. Liverpool didn’t even have their first choice goal keeper present to attempt that.

Slots going to be sacked, just a matter of time now. Liverpool are going in the reverse direction despite the huge spend this summer. Nearly all the players that made Klopp great and in turn Klopp developed are either gone or past it now, someone will have to rebuild it anew now, and it’s probably not going to be Slot.
 
Seems like Liverpool board want to keep Slot, as they believe the team needs more transfer windows to change team..

On flip side you have Liverpool fans wanting him out.

There are better Managers out there, but those wanting Gerrard to come in as some sort of saviour or to provide a lift to the Club need to have their heads checked

Yes seeing reports. I mean what is buying more players going to do when the manager’s brand of football does not suit LFC? He talks to the press about how other teams don’t play football..making himself look foolish!

I guess the Liverpool board essentially see Slot as over achieving with the squad that he was left with, they also probably understood that longterm Slot would need to build his own team and squad.

Winning a league title regardless of whose players you inherited isn't an easy task. Say for example if this seasons performances were Slots 1st season, would Liverpool fans then say the manager needs time? Needs his own players.

Reality is regardless of whether its Slot or someone else coming in. Liverpool spine of the team and defence needs to be fixed with high quality players.

Allison is world class, but he's injured alot so long term whose the next keeper.

Konate / Van Dyk are done, there isn't exactly a huge number of top class CB available, the ones that are other clubs like Chelsea possible united will look at such players..

In midfield, there are plenty of good technical players but Liverpool lack physicality in that Area. Again which needs to be addressed.

Alonso could come in, or even Luis Enrique. Any of these managers will demand huge amounts of money to spend. Liverpool can't afford to make a dogs dinner out of defensive player recruitment like they did last summer.

With world cup on player prices will go up, so regardless of who manager is Liverpool board should have a list of player they want and get them early.

Reason why Liverpool, Chelsea fallen short is poor defence. Even Man city to an extent have struggled in this area. Which ever of these 3 clubs addresses their issues best, will have best chance of trophies

As far as Slots style of play, the slow passing etc.. that's typical Dutch managers football, which doesn't usually work in PL. So yeah if he stays he will have to change the way he plays and evolve
