Official Pakistan 2013 General Elections thread

Yesterday I was thinking that how can poll rigging be prevented... we certainly dont have any computerized system.. ppl go in stamp the ballot paper and drop it in a box... now after that, fake votes can be added, or ballots can be falsely claimed towards a particular party... why dont they do this... lets say on election day, in the camp, have a representative of ea party (or from PTI atleast for our sakes) sit down and tick away a number for every voter that casts a vote... (just like scoring in a cricket game, keep ticking off the numbers for each vote given in person)... so say if i am sitting in the camp and i see that 10000 ppl came in to vote in the particular camp... obviously when they tally up the votes and divide between the parties the numbers should add up to 10000 +/- 15-20 votes... this way parties wont be able to cast votes of deceased ppl, or fake voting... and we will get a true picture of what the results were...

Tsunami in Charsadda

i have noticed this in all the N vs PTI jalsa's.... (true for easily 80% of the jalsa's)...

PTI - ppl are mashed up... litterally on top of each other...a guy from the back of the pack will find it impossible to get to the front, coz its jam packed...

N - ppl are scattered and spaced out, you could easily run to the front (maybe the odd bump)...

Mardan Tsunami (AWESOME STUFF!!)

I think there is a confusion between Mardan and Charsada but massive wherever it is.

Definitely and the passion is very different as well. Some PMLN jalsas are dead and others are OK whereas PTI jalsas are full of energey even if they are not massive.

Nawaz Sharif walked away from interview (Ikhtilaaf) when host Wajahat rejected to show questionnaire in advance

FYI, they already do this

Problem is...fake voters vs fake votes

Glamorising experience, misunderstanding history

"I see that you haven’t changed a bit in these last four years and more, captain," said Nikolay Vsevolodovich... “It seems in fact as though the second half of a man’s life is usually made up of nothing but the habits he has accumulated in the first half.” Dostoyevsky The Possessed

Most election rhetoric is stupid. But this election season it is dumber than usual.

Take Nawaz Sharif going on and about maturity and experience. His way of saying he is the elder statesman who has seen it all, and Imran Khan the greenhorn who knows nothing. Elect a mature government, he exhorts the crowds...muddling the history of Pakistan in the process.

In the Pakistani context experience is a handicap not an advantage. Gen Pervez Musharraf has experience on his side: eight and a half years at the helm. If that’s what it takes, why don’t we bring him back?

Pakistan is stuck in a hole. Who has brought it to this pass, greenhorns or grandmasters of experience? Nawaz Sharif, twice prime minister and not much to show for it, is saying, hand power back to the yo-yos. It is almost as if Manmohan Singh next door were to present himself as a symbol of change. The laughter this would evoke would echo across the mountains.

Imran is no innocent either. Didn’t he campaign for Musharraf’s referendum? Not quite his finest hour. True, he has bent over backwards apologising for it, which is more than can be said about other political riders, saying sorry not a prime Pakistani virtue. All the same, he did make a boo-boo of himself.

And in his October 30 jalsa – the day the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was reborn – he came onstage and prostrated himself on his prayer mat in public, an ostentatious display we could have been spared. Mercifully, there’s been no repeat performance. So one lives and learns.

Zardari’s experience in high finance, not easy to beat. Offshore companies, commissions on international deals, money parked in Swiss bank accounts, property here, there and everywhere...our man from Nawabshah having come a long way. If experience is the touchstone Nawaz Sharif makes it out to be, Zardari should be president for five more years, no questions asked.

Sharif could do worse than look at his own record. At the first Kargil briefing from the army brass in April 1999, he could barely understand the implications of the stunt Musharraf and his favourite generals had pulled: taking the nation to the brink of war. But the sandwiches served were good and he said so. End of meeting. Putting Musharraf on the mat? The idea crossed no one’s mind.

No civilian government could have asked for a more ambition-free army chief than Gen Jahangir Karamat – urbane, well-read and decent. But Sharif, riding high on his ‘heavy mandate’ (two-thirds majority in parliament), was flexing his muscles and got rid of him.

This was little short of tempting fate, for who should step into Karamat’s shoes? The corps commander Mangla, one Gen Pervez Musharraf, sailing over the heads of two other generals, including Ali Quli Khan, who whether more deserving or not certainly did not have Musharraf’s brashness. The rest is history.

The PML-N’s Mr Bean (Chaudhry Nisar), who’s always had a talent for intrigue, had a hand in this affair. People who try to be too clever, there is no knowing what they end up doing. Musharraf returned the favour, Mr Bean’s confinement after the coup in his spread-out house in Faizabad mild and lenient.

I find the following hard to resist. When fellow-Chakwali, Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum, was joining the PML-N, he said before the cameras that this was how he understood the initials MNS: not, perish the thought, just Muhammad Nawaz Sharif but M for Motorway, N for nuclear power, S for the politics of sharafat (decency). The look of near-ecstasy on Nawaz Sharif’s face as he heard this...brings a smile to my lips every time I recall it.

In the PML-N (ah, does this sound like more sour grapes?) buttering, at times raised to an art form, is a necessary adjunct for getting on. But even by those stellar standards I thought the general’s performance was smart.

Benazir Bhutto blew her two chances as prime minister. True, the army was breathing down her neck, and the second time round Leghari, her hand-picked president, did a Brutus on her. But she was also the author of many of her misfortunes. Some people can’t resist a fair ankle, others who find it hard to resist that last one for the road, or the one after that for the ditch. Zardari could never resist a deal, any deal, as long as there was something in it. As for Nawaz Sharif, he blew his ‘heavy mandate’ more thoroughly than Taliban bombers could have done.

Do we raise such experience on a pedestal and worship it? This is experience best forgotten. During his first term as prime minister, Sharif had fallen into the habit of getting into his helicopter every other day to fly off to a remote village to condole with – wait for this – rape victims. There with a long face he would sit, expressing sympathy, handing out an envelope of cash, vowing retribution, the whole thing elaborately shown on state television the same evening (there were no other channels then). The nuts and bolts of governance bored him. These photo ops he loved. They made for great theatre.

This is the kind of idiocy we have to put up with in this country where leaders are more illiterate than the led. Would, as governor Punjab, Nawab Amir Muhammad have gone for such pantomimes? He would have put the fear of God in the entire police force instead of making an ass of himself and his government.

Sharif’s second term as prime minister was spent fighting real or imaginary enemies – President Leghari, Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, army chief Karamat – or inspecting the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway. No kidding: just as he had taken to visiting rape victims previously, he now took to visiting the Motorway...to the exclusion of everything else. And before he knew it, Musharraf’s coup had crept up on him.

The PPP and the PML-N don’t realise it, and of course you won’t catch them admitting it, but in the long-run Musharraf proved a godsend to both parties because discredited as they had become by then, they received a shot in the arm by turning, almost overnight, from administrative disasters into democracy champions. By 2008 both parties were ready to stage a comeback which they did. Instead of reviling Musharraf they should in secret be thanking him.

Sharif now thinks he is on the cusp of another comeback. Stranger things have happened, so who can say for sure this can’t happen? I won’t pretend to be a card reader or an amateur pollster. But whatever the outcome of this contest, let’s just hope we can push past experience to one side and chart a better future.

Tailpiece One: Barring Musharraf from contesting elections for life, their stern lordships of the Peshawar High Court thus opine: “We are of the considered view that a person who has got not a little respect for whole of the constitution how he will pass through narrow and small compass of Articles 62 and 63.” Would some kind-hearted soul render this into language that mere mortals can understand?

Two: What can persuade Gen Kayani to stop giving sermons on democracy? He can never leave Islam alone, why must he exhort the nation about democratic values? It’s not his office to do so. Look at the ANP, the MQM and the PPP, braving terrorist attacks and yet remaining committed to the election process. That’s democracy at work. It’s also the resilience of the Pakistani nation on display.

Three: Imran Khan says the Taliban did not kill Benazir Bhutto. He’s right, Martians did.

Jalsa in my constituency. NA 5 Nowshera.

I think the camera angles in Nowshera were poor.

Anyway, PTI will get Noweshera. We're quite strong there

^ I agree with that sentiment. No one can replace Insaf.

Although PTI, baatli and raamu are awesome PTI posters!

Thanks for appreciation :)

happy to report that i converted 3 more votes in favor of PTI.... mein khud toh nahin dei paoon ga vote, lekin mein make sure kar raha hoon ke meray aik vote ke badlay i donate enough + convert enough... so far my number is around 120 odd friends/relatives etc... (strangers i dont know how many might have converted for tabdeeli, but o well)...

thanks to the guys appreciating my little effort... (i am just collecting material from here and there and centralizing it here, making it a mini hub for PTI supporters, like a one stop shop)...

if i were to be in Pak right now, you guessed it I would have been a solid TZ for PTI... par mein apni is capacity mein reh ke bhi, i think, enough damage dei raha hoon

from my observations (and i am following the elections like a mad scientist), IK is clearly whipping some noora butt... ppp abandoned the battle ground... the ppp voters are 50% in favor of PTI, 10% took a bitter pill and are in favor of N, 5% or so went to others and 35% still thinks BHUTTO ZINDA HAI... and of these 35% a good 10-15% consider PTI/IK to be a good party, and are on the border....

IK has managed to break away 15% of N league votes comfortably... and a good 20% of them are still sitting on the border or have good things to say about PTI/IK but which way the camel tilts in the end we will know on the 11th...

THE BAKWAS ANALOGY OF "IK KO VOTE DEI KAR ZAYA KARNAY WALI BAAT HAI" HAS BEEN BURRIED,,, THAT THOUGHT PROCESS IS GONE OUT OF THE WINDOW, AND THAT IS HURTING THE N GROUP ALOT...
WOW well done..You are diong a great effort for Naya Pakistan InshaALLAH.
I can understand your feeling.Being out of pak and unable to vote I am also trying to convince friends etc to vote for PTI.

Thanks for appreciation :)

Tell me about it, i tried to convert my very pro PMLN mamu who had all sorts of propaganda stories against Imran. I gave up in the end because the argument was going nowhere. Still managed to convince a few people so not all bad on my side.

Attack on PTI election office, JI candidate in Peshawar

A bomb blast occurred targeting an electoral office of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) near Peshawar’s Panchgai road area on Saturday morning, DawnNews reported.

“A time device, which was planted outside the office of PTI in Peshawar exploded but did not cause any loss of life,” a police official said.

The blast, however, destroyed the PTI’s election office and a few adjacent shops, police added. The explosion was heard from far distances and spread fear among residents of neighbouring areas.

According to bomb disposal unit, it was a time device which carried 1.5 to two kilograms of explosive material.

It was the first blast in Peshawar which targeted the office of PTI.

PTI chairman Imran Khan will also be addressing a public gathering in Peshawar today.

In another attack, a blast occurred near the convoy of Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) candidate from NA-39 in Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

JI candidate Raj Mohammad survived the incident without any injuries. Mohammed was on his way to the Ferozekhel area of Orakzai Agency.

Don't have to prove i am not a big fan of Sharifs but pathetic arguments by MQM supporters in Karachi blaming Sharifs of poor law and order situation (ARY show on Karachi streets).

Results will be pouring in this time by next week Insh'Allah. :)
I hope whoever wins does his best for Pakistan. The only way is up.

Why no drone attacks last few weeks ? USA know it can help PTI !!!!

I have been thinking even Americans not doing any stupid things which can give IK more votes. They are not using drones which will give IK more votes.

And we also know Nawaz Sharif has meet american more than few times and arabs too.

.................

Waqar bhai It was all in best interest of Pakistan as i didn't find PPP or PMLN sincere to Pakistan and Imran Khan was nowhere. Musharaff made blunders and Imran Khan's support was natural as he is by far the most sincere Pakistani politician.

Fazlur Rehman thought I'd declare Ahmadis Muslims, but I'm not a hypocrite: Imran Khan

PTI Chairman Imran Khan addressing a public gathering at Attock. PHOTO: RASHID ALI/EXPRESS

SWABI: “Maulana [Fazlur Rehman] thought I would declare Ahmadis Muslims but Imran Khan is not a munafiq (hypocrite)”, said Imran Khan while addressing supporters at a rally in Swabi on Saturday.

Imran spoke of initial allegations put forth by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman of being supported by a Jewish lobby and said that the newest accusation of support from the Ahmadi lobby is to fool the nation.

“I’ve read the Holy Quran with translation and it clearly states that one who does not believe in the finality of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) is not a Muslim. The Holy Quran asks us to follow the example of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and though it is not possible to reach his level of perfection, I try my best to be like him,” Imran said.

He further went on to say people like Rehman should stop selling religion to get votes and also asked them to prepare for a political death.

Background

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday issued a statement saying that the “PTI totally subscribes to the article in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the Ahmadis. It is not part of the PTI agenda to seek amendment of the said article in the Constitution.”

The PTI Chairman was referring to article 260-3 of the Constitution that declares Ahmadis non-Muslims. Additionally, articles 298-B and 298-C prohibit Ahmadis from posing as Muslims, calling their faith Islam, proselytising, or “in any manner whatsoever” outraging the religious feelings of Muslims.

This clarification came in response to a video clip that surfaced on social media, showing a woman named Nadia Ramzan Chaudhry in a meeting with Mirza Masroor Ahmad, spiritual leader of the Ahmadi community, in UK. According to the video, Chaudhry especially asked for Ahmadi votes on behalf of the PTI.

Khan denied any links with the woman and said that it would be against the Representation of the People Act, 1976 and instructions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ask for votes in this manner.

as much as I like IK, his ego WILL come in between, and rightly so. both PPP and PML-N are a cancer to Pakistan. in fact, PPP is a bigger one.

^^^

I know he wants to distance himself from the Ahmadi scandal but he didn't had to go this extreme....

No need to use Quran to justify disgusting law. Doesnt Islam forbid to call each other kafir? But in current climate it will be political sucide for Imran Khan so cant blame him.

I need Help. There is one video where imran khan is saying that in Jalsa,
Naat will make people bore.
One Noora send it my brother who was certain to vote for PTI but now he is in doubt.
How to counter this situation?

This is easy. For one he made reference to youngesters getting bored and this shows that he knows his people. Our youth try to carry the tag of Islam but lack sincerity hence they get bored with naats. Unfortunately what he is saying is true and it's more of an indication of our youth's mentality than his.

Agree with aashiqmizaaj. Ask your brother that if a poltical lparty is preparing for political jalsa (rather than a religious gathering) then would it be logical to recite naats in jalsa? I am sure your brother won't stay there after couple of naats. Imran, by saying naats will bore the youth, doesn't mean he himself is against naats or he don't want to listen to them when there is a proper occaision.

Hate to say this but majority will vote for PML (N) in Punjab and as a Neutral person, I also think PML (N) is favourite in Punjab. I hate N League but these Kuttay Ki Dumm / Jahil people will still go with N League no matter whatever you show on TV or launch a campaign against them.

I dont think N league will win majority of seats in Punjab and neither PTI. So PTI have best chance to make deal with other parties and form goverment in Punjab. Punjab gets 50% of funds so Ganjas will be happy ruling Punjab for another 5 years.

What's PTIs stand in Sindh? Is anyone from pti running in Sindh? Is Imran Khan going to sindh?

Seen many programs where news anchors asking people who will they vote on streets and majority of them saying they will vote Nawaz Sharif party.

What's PTIs stand in Sindh? Is anyone from pti running in Sindh? Is Imran Khan going to sindh?
I frequent a tech forum where majority of people are Karachi residents. PTI has a 4:1 lead over MQM amongst the eligible voters.

A poll lead on Social media/Internet proves nothing though. Ground realities may not be the same.
It's just that all of them were die-hard MQM supporters a few years back.

^^PTI would have to establish a terrorist wing, just like PPP, MQM, and ANP to even have a chance of competing in Sindh...otherwise futile and PTI has rightly realized this...

Official

9th May Daytime - Karachi Jalsa
9th May Nightime - Islamabad Jalsa

Going to be a huge day. Though i personally feel worried for Imran coming to Karachi, as the situation there is just not right for political activities.

Just saw a clip where Asma Shirazi was asking a lady about her vote. She said she would vote for IK because he will make a 'naya pakistan', something like Jinnah has envisioned. Asma shirazi goes on & says 'Qaid Azam walay Taliban k saath to nai hotey'.

How unbiased.
