Doesn't the Lahore City government come under Najam Sethi nowadays? So I guess it's safe to assume this is his doing.

An old picture of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, someone who portrays himself as a champion of democracy today was a close ally of Dictator Zia ul haq. This is a poster which was used by Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for his election campaign for the general elections of 1990.

P.S Yes, these are the "Hoors" in the background taking coffin of "Shaheed" Zia ul haq. Probably to paradise.

Nawaz Shareef in today's jalsa:

"Humnay cricket bhee kheli saath mein is mulk ko atomic power bhee banya aur saath mein motorway bhee banayee"

Please someone give him something else to say.

"Humnay cricket bhee kheli..."

Nawaz Sharif was a right-hand batsman who made a duck in his only appearance for Railways against PIA in 1973-74. He later served two terms as Pakistan's prime minister, firstly between November 1990 and July 1993 and then from February 1997 to October 1999 when he was ousted by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf. He was subsequently banned from holding public office for 21 years and exiled to Saudi Arabia.

Love how this whole thread has turned into a collection of ads, slogans, pics, videos, attack posters, etc. from PTI. While the real elections is being fought in the streets and most of it has nothing to do with the material in this thread.

Rural Pakistan which will determine the elections, where party affiliations don't matter, where dharra and thana-kachery culture exists, where key to winning an election is to get the support of the dominant biradri in that area, where caste plays a great role and candidates change parties more frequently than Taylor Swift changes boyfriends, it really makes one wonder what kind of bubble our city mostly expat folks live in, whose only access to electoral process is social media, which is obviously dominated by PTI.

In any case, would love to see some real on the grounds insight from posters actually there in Pakistan (who don't spend all day in front of their computers) rather than expats whose favorite hobby has become embedding videos and pics from PTI's official and unofficial fan club websites.

Apart from the bait at the ex pat community, whose funding of the political process is key to the campaigning i agree with you
The pti is running a populist campaign very similar to obama who unlike ik did head one of the major political parties and his social media campaign worked wonders in the country where social media originates from. He lost out more rural areas like texas, alabama and kentucky to romney.

Commentators are comparing the pti in this election with the start of the ppp who began initially as a socialist movement akin to the pti, but who actively campaigned for the end of feudalism and the redistribution of land and whose supporters, the farmers and peasants actually fought on the streets against tyranny rather than online.

This thread is created to discuss Pakistan elections, other party supporters can also post pictures and videos of their favourite party so we can discuss the ground situation.

Saad sahib,

With elections literally a couple of weeks away people are allowed to get emotional. Also, you are in no position to judge people based on their location. There is a good chance that some people living outside Pakistan may have more knowledge of Pakistani politics than an average Pakistani living in Pakistan. Having said that i would also like to see more discussion on some of the important issues such as health care and education.

Yup did some door to door campaign for Mohammad Madni and Waqar Ahmad.. Two PTI youth candidates in NA 119 and PP 142 they are competing against Hamza Shehbaz.

The woman competing against Nawaz Sharif is a down to earth person. I really wish she beats Nawaz, at least it will be some good news even if PTI can't win the elections.

Come on dude, lighten up. With you, its simple the case of seeing glass half empty instead of glass half full, and it getting quite tedious.

Honestly, you cannot underestimate the influence of overseas Pakistanis on this elections. The historically high over voters turn in the urban areas , in this elections, would massively owe to the political activism of the expats. No exaggeration. People are literally calling their friends and families back home telling the to vote. Turn on any news channel, and the host is also pleading the urban areas' folks to cast their vote because their fate is majorly decided by the baradari traditions of the rural areas. You can express as much pessimism as you want but the results of this election will be determined by the urban voters!

Imran Khan is at least holding 4-5 successful jalsa each day in small rural districts. Do you have anything positive to say about that?

Pakistan's Election 2013 (just like Obama's campaign) belongs to the Youth so one mustn't act so surprised and heartbroken to see extensive use of social media. In fact, who in this day and age would underestimate the impact of social media? Just ask the mastermind of Obama campaign what impact it made to Obama's chances of success.

No, a lot of these (cartoons, videos, photoshop pics, etc.) are just your typical PTI blogosphere paraphernalia. My point was that instead of posting superfluous material which adds nothing to the purpose of this thread other than self boasting one upmanship, it might serve the topic better if we talked about the real issues at hand and maybe let the posters on ground explain what's really happening rather than PTI Internet warriors flooding the thread with unnecessary stuff. Of course they can do that if thats their perogative but its not as if some other parties supporters are posting similar stuff so its some kind of battle of who has the better ad or who has the funnier photoshop pics. It's a one way street with no purpose but to regurgitate stuff found on other sites to somehow make oneself feel that they are contributing to this campaign in some way when in reality they are just making a fool of themselves.

Overseas Pakistanis impact on this elections is simply going to be in terms of money. Nothing more. But again, this complex that expats have about their importance and their voice is truly amazing. First, they display a deep disdain for the natives and their choices and then feel superior enough to somehow be a big factor in the whole thing when they don't even know what's the situation on the ground other than what they hear from our deeply biased and superficial print and electronic media.

Also, IK can do 20 jalsas a day, the elections will not be determined by who does more jalsas in a day. Why do you think PPP is not doing any jalsas. Have they accepted defeat or they don't have money to arrange some people to stand in front of a stage and do some sloganeering. It's because it does not really matter. Rural vote in Pakistan is determined at biradri level. It's through internal wheeling and dealings and patronage based politics, where party affiliations don't even matter. What's the use of wasting time and resources in such frivolous things when the money is somewhere else.

Lastly, to compare US presidential elections where its a contest between two people on a national level and that also in a developed western society to that of a parliamentary style election in a poor developing country is hilarious, something which only an expat is capable of doing.

Sure, maybe next time when a person based and living in Pakistan opines on the local nitty gritty of politics of a section of Birmingham, Uk or Missouri, USA, based solely on Tv, press and social media info, I would be interested to see how important his knowledge and influence is taken.

You have your own deeply biased and superficial views about the overseas Pakistanis and frankly I don't see much difference between you and the people you constantly mock. If they are frustrated with all the ills of Pakistani then you are incurably hopeless your own country's future (you've admitted it yourself on various occasions). Perhaps instead getting too carried with the things you see on the internet, you need to keep to up to date with current political climate of Pakistan. This is not 80s and only an expat who has zero knowledge about the ground realities in Pakistan is capable of saying that social media and active campaigning in rural areas, and politicisation of the urban population will have no impact on the elections.

Yes PPP has accepted defeat and in fact it's signed its own death warrant through its own five year rule. The reason why the party is not campaigning because it no longer has the ground to appeal to the masses. The party is totally devoid of leadership, vision and the motivation. Of course it still has its usual regional, rural votes intact but so does every party in Pakistan. But at the end of the day, its the party who appeals to the masses that wins the ultimate battle.

And no, no one is comparing US Presidential style system with Pakistan premature Parliamentary democracy. The point was about the role and the impact of social media on election campaign which was as surprising and influential in raising the level of interest, and awareness in a developed country as it is an undeveloped country like Pakistan.

Why do some people think that instead of first ever free Elections campaign that's taking place after completion of an democratically elected government, there is some kind of revolution taking place in Pakistan? Therefore, every fabric, every section and fraction of the country must be shaken and tuned upside down within a day?

Honestly so much pessimism, bitterness and biased amongst certain expats regarding the elections in Pakistan, finding faults and flaws in everything. I mean what do they think God will send Saints or angels to find a quick fix to their problems or they the people themselves will have to rise and make a start somewhere?

I'm sure if Pakistanis living in Pakistan start following the UK politics as closely and obsessively as some of the British Paks do, they will certainly end up having more knowledge and backed up opinions than the local folks I work with.

Kohat remote controlled blast at election office kills five

KOHAT: At least five persons were killed and 15 wounded in an explosion at the election office at Kacha Pucca located on Orakzai Agency-Kohat border on Sunday morning, Geo News reported.

Police said that the explosion occurred at the joint-office of an independent election candidate for NA-39, Syed Noor Akbar from Orakzai Agency and ANP candidate for Kohat NA-14, Khurshid Begum, which resulted in the death of five persons and 15 wounded, while the nearby vehicles and shops were also damaged. Luckily, both the candidates remained safe in the explosion.

DSP Mushtaque Hussain said that it was a remote controlled explosion containing ten-kilogram explosives.

Following the blast, security forces immediately sealed the Kohat-Hangu Road and started search operation.

Agree with this, politics is about the policies and the substance, people mustn't reduce this all to personalities.

PML-N’s bid to engage Shoaib thwarted by Imran

A swift move by chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan neutralised the efforts of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to convince former super star cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, dubbed as Rawalpindi Express, to support the election campaign of its candidate Hanif Abbasi in NA-56.

Sources said PML-N’s candidate from NA-56 Hanif Abbasi visited the residence of Shoaib Akhtar some days back and requested him to support his election campaign against PTI chief Imran Khan but the Rawalpindi Express showed his inability to immediately take any decision in this respect.

The sources said as the news of their meeting caught the ear of Imran Khan he approached Shoaib Akhtar and held meeting with him the same day. The meeting between both former star cricketers proved fatal to the PML-N’s candidate as Shoaib Akhtar conveyed to Hanif Abbasi that he would not support him in his election campaign.

They said Hanif Abbasi at once contacted the leadership of the PML-N and then again came to Shoaib Akhtar with an offer for a senate ticket in future. He informed Shoaib Akhtar that his party chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is keen to give him party ticket in next Senate election but all his efforts failed to convince the former cricket star who had already made commitment with Imran Khan, the sources added.

The sources close to Shoaib Akhtar confided to this correspondent that he would go to Saudi Arabia to perform Umra next month so no one would be able again to contact him for any kind of support for the election campaign. When contacted for version, a person who introduced himself as Imran and personal assistant of Hanif Abbasi put a very strange condition for a version saying “If Shoaib Akhtar gives any indication that he will support election campaign then you should write that Hanif Abbasi met Shoaib Akhtar and requested him to extend his support in the election campaign and if he (Shoaib) is not willing to do so then our version is that no such meeting was held.”

Last paragraph is the funniest. Typical of PMLN. :malik

Why do overseas pakistanis, or dual nationals have to convince what is right for pakistan or not. They wouldnt go and live in Pakistan or actually experience what goes on there. I think they shouldnt be allowed to vote in internal affairs of Pakistan.

So its very easy to sit outside and commentate, but very hard to roll your sleeves up and get hands dirty

You can express as much pessimism as you want but the results of this election will be determined by the urban voters!

and there lies in the problem!!!!

I think that is unfair, because the majority is rural and it should be according to what is feasible, rational, comfortable to them, rather than to the urban voters.

I'm sure if Pakistanis living in Pakistan start following the UK politics as closely and obsessively as some of the British Paks do, they will certainly end up having more knowledge and backed up opinions than the local folks I work with.

Lol, why would they unless they have nothing better to do. Even if expats do follow Pakaistani politics closely, how do they follow it. Print, TV, social media...right. That's very superficial. It doesn't give you any idea of what's really happening other than giving you a false sense of knowing it all. Media in Pak is totally biased and unreliable. It will put a guy like Sheikh Rashid an hour to bloviate at length when he has lost 2 elections in a row and carries no seat and instead ignore politicians who are in the parliament and carry a lot of weight in their local constituencies. Just an example.

Plus expats have no real skin in the game. All their advice, opinion etc. has more to do with their own ego and feel good factor about a certain candidate. Imagine me getting a call from my friend who lives in Pak and telling me that he has followed American politics very closely on the media and he thinks so and so should get my vote for the governor of Tennnesssee. My reaction will obviously be, lol.

Saadi baba why not post vids pics etc of the party you are going to vote for?? Oh wait your an expat too..guess the you truly are following the way of your quaid in edgeware..

This ekection will inshalkah desyroy the myth of the rural vote..

Posting vids and pics are a useless and futile exercise as I have stated above, why would I resort to it myself. As for being an expat, exactly, that is why I feeel I am able to criticize my expat brethren here, as I see myself as being distant and aloof about this campaign despite reading Pakistani papers and following political shows quite extensively.

As for the rural vote, its much more reliable and dependable than the urban vote IMO. Urban middle class voter is moody. For them the voting process is too tedious and time consuming, it gets bored and frustrated easily. It's also hard to gauge their opinions from day to day as that changes with what's cool and happening at that particular time. Hope this changes this time but still, historically, rural vote carries more weight.

Please, Pakistan would not be surviving today, if it wasn't for billions of dollars worth remittances sent back home each year, by the overseas Pakistanis. They actually care about Pakistan, and are ready to invest as much as they can, once the situation gets better. Being Pakistanis, just living overseas does not mean they do not care about their homeland. And they are just as Pakistani as any other Pakistani living in Pakistan, most of them have also lived majority of their life in Pakistan. They deserve to vote, being Pakistanis, doesn't matter if they live abroad or in Pakistan. Plus, they are much more educated than the average Pakistani, and they will actually vote for the person they think is genuine, and will never vote for the person which gives them jobs, money, other benefits etc. unlike the Pakistani living in Pakistan.
