Official Pakistan 2013 General Elections thread

IK's best line was from yesterday's Lahore azm-e-Pakistan convention, when the crowd was chanting, dekho dekho kaun aya..
IK went...abhi nahi, mein sher kay shikar kay liye raat ko niklon ga

the last Jalsa we had in Faisalabad was epic too that showed the media PTI was an emerging force before October 30th :)

With Nadir' inclusion in PTI I think NA 85 is sealed for PTI.

NA 85 mera paidaishi halqa, wonder if it's mean to call old friends whom i haven't spoken to in 15 years to vote for PTI? :)

Nadir Pervez can also help Farrukh Habib in defeating Abid Sher Ali in NA 84. He also has good relations in other Fsd constituencies as well plus he has once defeated Raja Rental in by elections in Gujjar Khan as well :D

Haroon Rashid's column on Raja Nadir Pervez (Interesting read)

Even if PTI doesn't take desrired number of seats, they can still bring massive change as the article below explains:

PTI’s score may determine the post-poll math

It is a million dollar question: can Imran Khan pull off the impossible? On that equation may be riding the outcome of this election in more ways than one.

The claims of a “clean sweep” are akin to talk being cheap; so, in my humble submission, that is ruled out (even in cricket terminology). I suspect the Kaptaan indulges in his favourite prediction game only to keep his party’s morale on the necessary motivational keel, which is instructive, especially in a polity where the swing vote swings wildly towards the party projected to form the next government.

The “PTI factor” will play a crucial role in the make-or-break of the next government if it hits the straps. Here’s how: if the ‘party-for-change’ manages to win 35-40 National Assembly seats (reserved and minority seats included) and follows on its avowed decision to sit in the opposition by not breaking bread with either the PPP or the PML-N at the Centre, the big two status quo forces will be forced to join hands if neither wins a simple majority and/or has enough meat in terms of allies.

Such an eventuality would be a disaster-in-the-making given their recent history. There is such visceral acrimony between the PPP and PML-N that even if they were to somehow tide over the creases initially, it’s a cinch the probable coalition won’t last.

This sort of situation would be tailor-made for the PTI to make itself count — as the opposition, both in the short and long term. PML-N, presumably, would be more desperate than the PPP to form a coalition of the willing since the flock of Leaguers has historically been a fair weather friend. Also, the senior Sharif has been out of parliament for 14 years now; this is by all counts, his last big ticket to become prime minister. It will take a big heart for him to let the PPP and PTI form a coalition — even if highly improbable, and something that will take a brave man to wager on!

But that is still some distance away with lots of ifs and buts riding on it. Purely from the PTI’s perspective, if the rather fantastic clean sweep does not materialize and the party finds itself well short, the Kaptaan will have a situation on his hands. The young PTI hopefuls appear to have already taken the sweep for granted. A setback will require him to dig deep and hold the ship together.

However, there would still be positives to take home even if the PTI only manages to open a decent account.

The party’s arrival as a serious contender bodes well for Project Democracy. Imran Khan and his legion of young party cadres deserve credit for breaking the stranglehold that status quo forces had over the electorate, and perpetuating a system designed to keep the reins of power with them. There is now a choice of substance before the electorate.

The single biggest contribution that the PTI has made — and which is a change in itself regardless of there being immediate dividends or not — is in creating a magnetic field for the youth: now they can not only participate in politics as candidates but effectively, carve out a role that potentially enables them to become tomorrow’s decision-makers at the highest level.

That it has actually awarded 35pc of tickets to candidates below the age of 40 will give them a strong sense of self-belief and encourage them to invest in their — and hopefully, the country’s — future.

Holding intra-party polls is another feather in the cap. It has already drawn grudging recognition even from naysayers, some of whom had predicted the exercise would be a death blow to the party given how the system works. Surviving the odds has earned PTI a distinction no other party can boast of.

Fellow commentator Saleem Safi, who isn’t particularly enamoured of PTI’s calling or even direction made an interesting remark recently about its contribution to the political landscape, and how it will fare in the coming elections — the second part continues to vex every pundit worth his or her salt.

Safi said he didn’t know what PTI’s fate will be but it has done enough to “soften the rod in the neck” — to borrow the Urdu colloquial for arrogance — of the PML-N leadership, which used to haughtily shoo away politicians wanting to come under its shed, based on personal like or dislike.

In the same vein, he said the PTI’s rising graph particularly among the youth also made the PML-N realize “there was something like the youth, which exists” (sic). Giving a random survey of his own in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar, he said, the party appeared to be riding a crest of popular wave but that it had left him confused about the eventual outcome.

At the least, what is apparent is that the party will offer genuine opposition — in the parliament, for a change, and where it counts. In such an eventuality, it can use this time to build on its strengths and work out studiously on the loose ends.

The PTI as a potent opposition will keep the government on its toes, and have time on its hands to build pressure through all avenues available to push for one piece of legislation which is vital to its future: the right of vote for overseas Pakistanis — a major chunk of which it may have been robbed of because big parties were scared of being at the receiving end of such a vote at its expense.

Indeed, a prominent TV anchor had tipped me off before the lenient verdict came out that the court hearing was little more than an attempt at grandstanding to be on the right side of history. The fact is that the idea for granting voting rights was broached the first time three years ago but had been deliberately stalled by the conniving bureaucracy, the PPP government and, later, by the PML-N as a partner-in-crime by not legislating on it.

A turnout in excess of 50%, most analysts suggest, could still turn the tables for PTI. The trump card is perhaps, held by more than 10 million voters in the 18-25 age bracket, and more than 36 million registered voters with no previous baggage.

That video reminds me of the passion I saw during Obama's first presidential elections. The coolness and zen like calmness at display in that video by IK also reminds me of Obama.

^ when the parties that are being targeted are determined to contest elections then why should they be delayed.

MQM wants it postponed although ANP wants it to go ahead .

Have to say, this is probably the best political video ever to come out of Pakistan. Simple, short, no messages, no clip of a speech, no attack on the opponent, no fancy camera work, no song in the background, just a random moment of pure political magic caught on camera showing the passion (Junoon) of the supporters, the brilliant display of lights in the background, the ground shaking roars of the crowd, the swelling up of it all amidst IK's cool and contemplative posture, the serene yet joyous expression on his face and the pent up energy expressed through his feet moving restlessly as the camera scans the whole scene and it all comes to a crescendo, the screen fades away and word tabdeeli and date of the election comes on. Absolutely brilliant !

lol what were they? can't be bothered watching the whole program.

Rehman Malik in a press conference now, has just made public the money laundering, & various other frauds the Shareef brothers were embroiled in. He is also sending the proofs to ECP/SC for investigation.

Its a parody of the PML(N) slogan. "Look who has come; The lion has arrived, Lion has arrived". Instead it's "Look who has come; The lion hunter has arrived."

That gave me the goosebumps.

11th May InshALLAH.

lolz... Moeed Pirzada and his dream...

Someone must have told Imran that aggression pays in Election campaign, and apparently this flaying of cricket bat against the circus tigers is helping PTI a lot! this morning I saw a dream; it was grainy and hard to grasp as morning dreams are, but I remember either it was Imran or some young boys who were beating a meek looking lion or tiger, who looked terrified and wanted to run and then the "bhosa fillings" of the stuffed animal started to come out...it was hilarious! Lol! ...I am sure they won't turn this into an Advertisement..it was only a dream!

Tomorrow IK will be at Karachi at 11 am... as per his official twitter.

I will be coming to Karachi on the 7th of May at 11:00 AM at Mazar-e-Quaid. I hope to see all my Insafians there! Karachi is the heart of Pakistan and its people must participate for NayaPakistan with full fervor. Only then can we get rid of all the terror that has encircled this beautiful city.

Majority of MQM voters are urdu speaking? And what about other ethinicities in Karachi like Punjabi, pathans and sindhis?

Moreover, as mentioned by Khursheed Nadeem in his today's column, Multan Police is harrasing the supporters of PTI's candidate for NA-153, Justice (R) Saeed Khursheed.Hum log to Karachi police ka rona rotay hain keh wo politicised hai lekin kia Punjab Police kam politicised hai?

The photo of ex chinese president 'Hu Jintao' who was chinese president from 2003-2013. Nawaz was not in power during 'Hu Jintao' tenure.

Secondly the name 'Mr. Xi Jinping' mentioned in this post is the current Chinese President who took his office on 14th March this year. Sadly "PMLN Propaganda Team" is making a fool of people like you by putting wrong picture, wrong name and wrong facts in just 1 pic.

And above all, like many Blind Noon Supporters some people stated to share it straightaway on fb.

Its well said in Urdu "Nakal kay liye bhi AQAL ki zaroorat hoti hain"

Three PTI supporters gunned down

FAISALABAD: Three relatives of a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) candidate for PP-51 were gunned down allegedly by the supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) on Sunday over an election-related dispute in Chak Jhumra, police said.

The Muzaffar Tatla group, of Chak 185-RB, killed Safdar Bajwa, Ghulam Murtaza, Ali Raza and injured Ihtesham at their outhouse.

Police said the Tatla group had arranged a meeting for PML-N candidates for NA-75 Ghulam Rasool Sahi and PP-51 Azad Ali Tabbasum.

The Safdar Bajwa group which was supporting the PTI exchanged words with the Tatla group but locals intervened into the issue and pacified both sides.

Later, the Tatla group called the members of the Bajwa group, including Safdar Bajwa, Ghulam Murtaza, Ali Raza and Ihtesham at their outhouse to settle the issue. During the talks, the armed people of the Bajwa group opened indiscriminate fire killing Bajwa, Mustafa and Raza on the spot.

Ihtesham sustained bullet injuries and was shifted to hospital where his condition was pronounced stable.

Ajmal Cheema told Dawn that the three deceased were his close relatives who were gunned down over the election dispute.

City Police Officer Raja Riffat Mukhtar said both groups had brief fallout some three days ago but the issue was resolved. He said the bodies had been shifted to morgue for autopsy and action would be taken against the accused people after the registration of a case. He said both parties were trying to resolve the issue but the situation turned ugly resulting into the killing of three people.

Tariq Bajwa, who is contesting as PPP ticket for NA-75, said the incident was the result of a dispute over tickets distribution by the PML-N and the PTI. He said he had tried hard to pacify both sides but his efforts proved futile owing to the negligence of the police. He said the incident could have been avoided if police had taken precautionary measures after both groups had exchanged words three days ago.

He claimed that Bajwa group had also gunned down two people of Tatla group. However, the CPO did not confirm this report.

Bajwa said that the killers had celebrated the murders as they danced at the bodies.

LeJ terror suspect contesting on PML-N ticket

ISLAMABAD: A Lashkar-e-Jhangvi-linked alleged terror suspect who has already spent five years in jail on murder charges and had known links with a slain al-Qaeda linchpin Amjad Hussain Farooqi is running for a National Assembly seat from Gujrat on a PML-N ticket.

Chaudhry Abid Raza Gujjar had been handed down death sentence under section 302 and section 7 of the Anti Terrorism Act 1997 for the murder of six people during a failed assassination attempt on the former Nazim of Gujrat, Ghulam Sarwar Bhooch, in 1998. His nomination papers for the upcoming elections were rejected by Returning Officer Malik Ali Zulqarnain Awan on April 6, 2013 after an independent candidate, Raja Haq Nawaz, took up his conviction on the murder charge as well as his alleged connections with some banned sectarian outfits, including the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). Abid was also listed under Section 11 (E) of the 4th Schedule of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 for his alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities. But strangely enough, he was cleared by an election tribunal of the Lahore High Court on April 18, 2013 to contest the general elections.

The PML-N leadership’s decision to award the party ticket for NA-107 to Abid Raza of Kotla Arab Ali Khan Group instead of the party’s district president Malik Hanif Awan has surprised many because Awan and his nephew Jamil Awan had won that seat twice in 2008 general elections and in 2012 by-elections, respectively. According to Awan, the party leadership told him that Hamza Shahbaz had made a commitment to award the PML-N ticket to Abid Raza at the time of the December 2008 by-elections to appease the Kotlas who had also been vying for a PML-N ticket for the by-election. But some PML-N rebels allege that the leadership of a banned sectarian group, which is well-known for its proximity with the PML-N, in Punjab had persuaded the Sharifs to award the ticket to Abid Raza.

Nevertheless, the PML-N’s decision to award the party ticket to Abid Raza from NA-107 is equally alarming for the law enforcement agencies which had arrested him many times for interrogation since his 2003 release from Gujranwala Central Jail. It was during his detention in Gujranwala jail on murder charges that Abid had developed close ties with LeJ’s Malik Mohammad Ishaq and Ghulam Rasool Shah who were languishing in the same jail for the May 1997 murder of the SSP Gujranwala Ashraf Marth. While Abid’s appeal against the death sentence was being heard by the Lahore High Court, his family managed to strike a deal with Ghulam Sarwar Bhooch. After an ‘out of court settlement’ between the two groups and the withdrawal of the murder case, Abid Raza was set free on July 3, 2003 from Gujranwala jail.

However, he was taken into custody by the intelligence agencies a few months later in connection with the December 2003 twin assassination attempts on Pervez Musharraf by two suicide bombers in Rawalpindi. According to well-informed sources in the law enforcement agencies, Abid Raza was arrested in the wake of intelligence reports that the most wanted al-Qaeda linchpin in Pakistan Amjad Hussain Farooqi had been using the huge haveli/dera of Abid [spanning over more than six kanals] located in the Kotla town (also called Kotla Arab Ali Khan) of the Kotli district of Azad Jammu & Kashmir as his base camp to mastermind and plan the Rawalpindi suicide attacks on Musharraf.

The former ameer of the al-Qaeda-sponsored Brigade 313, Commander Ilyas Kashmiri who was killed in a US drone attack on June 4, 2011 in South Waziristan, also belonged to Kotli. Kashmiri was arrested in December 2003 following two failed assassination attempts on Musharraf in Rawalpindi. In 2008, five years after he was named in the bids on Musharraf’s life, Kashmiri was accused of plotting to assassinate General Ashfaq Kayani in Rawalpindi. Ilyas Kashmiri was considered close to Amjad Hussain Farooqi.

On September 26, 2004, ten months after Musharraf put the state agencies on his track with Rs20 million on his head, Amjad Farooqi was killed in a shootout in Nawab Shah. In an interview with a private TV channel on June 4, 2004, Musharraf had named Amjad Farooqi, the man who had also masterminded the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl with the help of Sheikh Ahmed Omar Saeed, as the chief plotter of the two failed assassination attempts against him.

Amjad Farooqi was killed 50 days after the August 7, 2004 arrest and extradition of the fugitive ameer of the Harkat ul-Jehad al-Islami (HUJI) chief Qari Saifullah Akhtar from Dubai and the ensuing information he had provided to his interrogators. Subsequent investigations revealed that Qari Saifullah, during his stay in the UAE, had actually been tasked by Abu Faraj Al Libbi, the then chief operational commander of al-Qaeda in Pakistan, to carry out the twin suicide attacks on Musharraf. In turn, Qari Saifullah had engaged Amjad Farooqi to plan the attack by hiring two suicide bombers - Khaliq Ahmed and Jameel Suddhan.

According to sources in the law enforcement agencies, after being arrested soon after the Musharraf attacks, Abid Raza was taken to Rawalpindi and was interrogated by a Joint Interrogation Team (JIT) composed of officials from numerous agencies and led by the then Corps Commander of Rawalpindi and the current Army Chief General Ashfaq Kayani. Abid reportedly conceded to his interrogators that Amjad Hussain Farooqi had been staying at his dera/haveli but he claimed that he never knew that he was an al-Qaeda linked terrorist who was planning to target Musharraf. Abid reportedly maintained that Amjad Farooqi actually came to him with the reference of some of his former inmates from Gujranwala Central Jail (most probably Malik Ishaq and Ghulam Rasool) and that he had nothing to do whatever Farooqi had been planning.

Abid Raza was interrogated by the agencies for almost eight months and eventually set free on the intervention of the Chaudhrys of Gujrat who were very close to Musharraf at that time. The Chaudhrys were approached by Chaudhry Naeem Raza, a member of Punjab Assembly on a PML-Q ticket and an advisor to the then Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi (between 2002 and 2007). Naeem Raza is the elder brother of Abid Raza who had to quit as advisor after the arrest of his brother for his alleged involvement in the assassination attempts on Musharraf. However, despite being released, Abid Raza was placed on the 4th schedule of Section of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, under which persons charged with terrorist activities, after being released, are kept under vigilance by the law enforcement agencies.

Approached by this correspondent, Naeem Raza confirmed that he had made frantic efforts for the release of his younger brother who was picked up by the ISI for sheltering Amjad Farooqi. “But I never knew that I was paving the way for the release of an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist. I actually came to know of this fact after his release when all kinds of sectarian elements and jihadis started flooding his dera at Kotla Arab Ali Khan. To tell the truth, Abid Raza had once introduced me to Amjad Hussain Farooqi with another name, saying that he was his Ustad. I never knew he was an al-Qaeda operative and was planning to attack Musharraf. After the Rawalpindi attacks on Musharraf, the ISI not only picked up Abid Raza but they also interrogated me as a suspect, only because of my brother’s jihadi links. Brigadier Ejaz Awan of the ISI had shown me a picture and asked if I knew that person. I immediately recognized him and told the Brigadier that he was introduced to me by Abid as his Ustad who was staying at his dera along with several others. But I was literally shattered to know that he was Amjad Farooqi. Frankly speaking, Abid Raza publicly claims to be a key leader of the Punjabi Taliban who had secured the PML-N ticket by assuring the Sharifs that the Taliban won’t target them in their election campaign”, said Naeem Raza who is contesting the coming election on a provincial assembly seat (PP-115) as a PML-Q candidate from Kharian.

When approached Abid Raza strongly refuted that he has any terrorist links as being alleged by his “political opponents”. Asked if he was arrested in connection with the Musharraf attacks following his release from Gujranwala jail in a murder case, masterminded by Amjad Farooqi who used to hide at his dera in the Kotli area, Abid Raza said: “You must know that those arrested in connection with the Musharraf attacks were never released. I was seized by the agencies because of the maneouvering of my political opponents. I was taken to Rawalpindi but was finally released because the agencies had nothing against me. My opponents even allege that I was taken to the Guantanamo Bay after being arrested from Afghanistan which is absolutely baseless. That Abid Raza was someone else from Karachi, having the same name”. To another question, Abid refuted having any link either with al-Qaeda, Amjad Farooqi, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi or the Sipah-e-Sahaba. But he conceded that he was a diehard Sunni Deobandi, adding that being a Deobandi was not a crime. About the murder case, Abid Raza said he was sentenced to death but was released after spending five years in jail because of an out of court settlement with the rival party as per the Islamic Shariah.

As the PML-N spokesman Senator Pervaiz Rasheed was approached by this correspondent and asked as to why an alleged terror suspect was awarded a party ticket by his leadership, he said: “All the allegations (against Abid Raza) had been proved wrong in the court of law and he was released honourably. He was in fact victimised by his influential political rivals of the area who monopolised politics (at that time). Abid Raza had challenged his rivals and fought against them bravely in the court of law to clear his name. His innocence was even acknowledged by the Election Commission of Pakistan which accepted his nomination papers and declared him a bona fide candidate for parliamentary elections”.
