Buttler out of The Hundred with calf injury

England white-ball captain Jos Buttler is out of this year's Hundred competition with a calf injury.

Buttler was due to lead last year's runners-up Manchester Originals but has now withdrawn after missing their first three matches, which have all ended in defeat.

The 33-year-old also missed much of the 2022 Hundred campaign because of a calf injury.

England's white-ball side are next in action with three T20s and five one-day internationals against Australia between 11-29 September.

Buttler is to remain as captain, despite coming under scrutiny after they failed to defend either of the limited-overs World Cups.

Matthew Mott has stepped down as head coach, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick put in temporary charge for the Australia series.

Buttler's withdrawal is not only a blow to the Originals, who were beaten by Oval Invincibles in last year's final, but the competition itself.

The England and Wales Cricket Board are due to sell stakes in the eight teams in the autumn and this year's tournament is a final showcase to attract investment.

Trent Rockets vs Welsh Fire, 14th Match

Trent Rockets have won the toss and have opted to field

Welsh Fire (Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow(w), Luke Wells, Joe Clarke, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Tom Abell(c), Glenn Phillips, David Willey, David Payne, Matt Henry, Mason Crane, Haris Rauf

Trent Rockets (Playing XI): Tom Banton(w), Alex Hales, Joe Root, Sam Hain, Rovman Powell, Lewis Gregory(c), Rashid Khan, Imad Wasim, Jordan Thompson, Luke Wood, Sam Cook

A suberb bowling effort from Haris Rauf deprived Imad Wasim's Trent Rocket from the victory as Welsh Fire won the nail bitter by 4 runs

Jonny Bairstow edged out his long-time teammate Joe Root in the battle of the England legends as Welsh Fire beat Trent Rockets in a thrilling encounter at a raucous Trent Bridge in The Hundred

Rockets appeared to be favourites for most of the match until the final dramatic moments, when a series of brilliant outfield catches by Fire flipped the game in their favour. David Payne and Haris Rauf then delivered a nerveless final set to clinch the win by four runs.

The spectacular finale saw four wickets fall in the final 10 balls, with Rashid Khan – the first of the four to fall – becoming the second Rockets batter to be run out after Root had earlier been dismissed in slapstick fashion for 17, via a brilliant throw from Joe Clarke at backward point.

Sam Hain was involved in both mix-ups, and although he remained unbeaten at the death, his 26-ball 22 was not enough to get the job done.

With Fire asked to bat first, Bairstow was the most fluent of all the batters on show, his 45-ball 55 proving to be the standout knock of a game in which the spinners held sway.

His contest with Root, who bowled a series of round-arm off-breaks from around the wicket, going for just 19 runs from his 20-ball quota, was one of numerous subplots as Fire fought for every run they could scavenge on a pitch taking appreciable spin.

Their 129-6 represented a fighting score, but with Root going nicely in reply after a brisk start from Alex Hales and Tom Banton, Rockets looked to be in control. A win would have taken them top of the table; instead, due to that extraordinary comeback, Fire have roared back into the mix.

Meerkat Match Hero Jonny Bairstow said: “We’ve had a couple of close ones, it’s that kind of competition, and it’s bringing out different qualities in different players, especially the way our bowlers closed the game out, and the way that Abes [Tom Abell] captained – being brave at times when he needed to be.

“In the field if you can get two run outs, it’s always pretty handy. It’s two wickets that the bowlers don’t have to get, and the fielding was exemplary from all the boys. We’ve had a couple of defeats but nobody’s got too downbeat, everyone’s stayed pretty level, and we’ve spoken about going out and relishing he challenge.”

On his contest with his great friend, Root: “He bottled it didn’t he! He didn’t even chuck one up! I said to him before he came on, ‘It’s me or you here' and next thing I see he’s bowling lower than Malinga!"

Manchester Originals (Playing XI): Philip Salt(w/c), Max Holden, Wayne Madsen, Matthew Hurst, Paul Walter, Jamie Overton, Sikandar Raza, Usama Mir, Tom Hartley, Scott Currie, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Northern Superchargers (Playing XI): Graham Clark, Oliver Robinson, Nicholas Pooran(w), Harry Brook(c), Adam Hose, Mitchell Santner, Jordan Clark, Ben Dwarshuis, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley

Northern Superchargers made it two wins from two over Manchester Originals in the northern derbies at Headingley in The Hundred on Sunday.

Harry Brook’s side beat the team from the other side of the Pennines by 14 runs to follow Hollie Armitage’s team’s success earlier in the day.

Originals won the toss and chose to bowl, which looked a great choice with rain falling before the start of the match and thick clouds overhead.

Unsurprisingly then Superchargers got off to a slow start with the bat, as Fazalhaq Farooqi took a wicket with the very first ball of the match.

Graham Clark and captain Brook rebuilt the innings with a well-built 50 partnership. Brook went onto score an explosive 58 off 33, before being caught out by a spectacular one-handed diving catch from Scott Currie.

After a strong middle to the home side’s innings the Originals came back strongly at the end to restrict Superchargers to 167-5.

Captain Phil Salt and Matty Hurst got Originals’ innings off to a very promising start with 90 for the opening partnership. Salt scoring 40 from 27, while the impressive Hurst top-scored with 78 from 45.

Unfortunately for the winless Originals, they then capitulated from 90-1 to 128-4 thanks to some game-turning run-outs and Mitchell Santner, who took 2-23.

When Hurst departed, Originals required 29 from 13, but they were unable to get over the line, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table and Superchargers up into third.

Meerkat Match Hero Harry Brook said: “I felt like they were the favourites coming out of the powerplay, but we bowled unbelievably well at the death to get the win.

“We didn’t have the batting powerplay that we wanted, but we stuck to our task. The outfield is so quick here that I didn’t feel like I needed to hit many balls in the air, so I was just trying to pierce the gaps and it worked. I was just trying to stay in until the end, so I could put pressure on them at the end. I felt good at the start and thankfully I hit a few gaps.

“We’ve always got a take-wickets mentality, but we obviously had to think about that a bit more when we didn’t get a wicket in powerplay, and they were 90 without loss. So, I tossed the ball to [Adil] Rashid and Mitch [Santner], and they did a really good job in getting some crucial wickets that helped us get the win.”

Sam Curran held his nerve to again be the Oval Invincibles’ match-winner in a last-ball thriller against Manchester Originals at Emirates Old Trafford.

The England all-rounder conceded just three runs from the final five balls of the game as the Invincibles snatched victory by just three runs to go top of the table.

Curran is the form man of the men’s competition, after claiming a hat-trick and hitting a half-century last time out against London Spirit, and was at it again in Manchester clearing the ropes on six occasions on his way to 68 from 38 balls before his heroics with the ball.

Defeat ends the hopes of the Originals, finalists in the past two years, of reaching the knockout stage.

Young Originals opener Matthew Hurst struck 50 from 29 balls, two days after his first-ever half-century in the men’s competition, to initially put the hosts on course to chase down 164 for eight.

The 20-year-old shared an 89-run opening stand from 54 balls with skipper Phil Salt.

Salt has made his name as England’s hard-hitting opener and while he made a fast start, it was Hurst who stole the limelight with an array of stunning strokes to get the home crowd roaring.

But when both fell in quick succession, Hurst succumbing to some clever bowling from Will Jacks, the Originals started to show signs they were ready to throw away another winning position.

Paul Walter unleashed a couple of big hits but Wayne Madsen had the indignity of being retired not out and his replacement Sikandar Raza was immediately caught in the deep.

Jamie Overton blasted a six, but then edged Curran behind, as the England man got to work on closing out the match.

Usama Mir missed a slower ball and with four needed from the final delivery he could only pick out Tom Lammonby 10 yards inside the leg-side rope.

Sam Curran said: “I thought with the ball it felt like we bowled really well. I think our success at the moment is just the self belief.

“Everyone is able to step up and it can always be someone different. The Hundred format is good because you can always feel in the game. You can squeeze the new batter with those 10 balls from one end. We’re winning close games and really pleased.”

N S-Chargers 83

Phoenix (39/100 balls, T:84) 86/0

Phoenix won by 10 wickets (with 61 balls remaining)

Birmingham Phoenix gave themselves a healthy boost in their quest for the top three with a fantastic win against Northern Superchargers in The Hundred at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

Phoenix dominated with the ball, blowing the visitors away for just 83, before knocking off the fastest chase in the history of the The Hundred men’s competition thanks to Ben Duckett and Moeen Ali.

Northern Superchargers won the toss and chose to bat, with much excitement at the return of England Men’s Test captain Ben Stokes.

Unfortunately for Stokes, he made an inauspicious start: made to wait 20 deliveries at the non-striker’s end before being bowled first ball by one that nipped back through the gate from Tim Southee.

Birmingham’s Kiwi pace attack set the tone for Phoenix’s victory. Southee took a wicket with his first ball to dismiss Matt Short, before Adam Milne got rid of the dangerous Nicholas Pooran.

Captain Harry Brook attempted to rebuild from 19-3, with Adam Hose, but even Brook found the pitch tough going as he succumbed to Chris Wood with the score at 36-4 halfway through the Superchargers innings.

Superchargers’ cause wasn’t helped by a superb run-out from Ben Duckett to remove Hose 10 balls later. Southee completed his sublime spell with 3-15 and his partner Milne 3-20. The visitors bowled out for a meagre 83 - the second-lowest total in The Hundred men’s competition.

Duckett continued from where he left off for Phoenix on Saturday, racing to 43 from 20 balls, alongside opening partner Moeen Ali who was similarly speedy for his 37 from 21.

Phoenix’s 10-wicket win dents Northern Superchargers’ hopes of making The Hundred Eliminator, while Moeen’s team have put themselves in the mix for the latter stages of the tournament, as they leapfrogged their opponents into third after five matches.

Meerkat Match Hero Southee said: “We assessed conditions reasonably quickly and the seamers hit a good length that proved difficult to play. It was a pretty clinical performance all round.

“This is a great team to be a part of and I’m enjoying my time here. That goes a long way, and it is nice to chalk up another win.

“A win like that can only do wonders for the confidence going into our next games, but we know we are heading to a different ground and different opposition, so we have to start again. There are no easy teams in this tournament so we should have another good couple of matches coming up.”

Trent Rockets vs London Spirit, 20th Match
05:30 PM GMT

Imad Wasim could b in action here of Trent Rockets

Alex Hales wound back the clock to fire Trent Rockets back into the top three of The Hundred men’s competition with a 22-run win over London Spirit at Trent Bridge.

The 35-year-old World Cup winner cleared the ropes five times in a typically powerful 68, from 42 balls, before Meerkat Match Hero Rashid Khan claimed three wickets in his first six balls to effectively ice the game, save for a couple of massive blows from Andre Russell.

Rockets, who had lost their previous two games, posted 166 for four with Tom Banton and Joe Root providing hard-hitting support of their own for Hales.

The opener had not passed 38 in his previous 11 innings in the competition but found his groove as Rockets added 93 from the second 50 balls of their innings – the only moment of concern coming when Hales was temporarily felled by a Nathan Ellis full toss.

Banton thrashed 36 from 25 balls to set a platform while Root’s enduring know-how ensured a strong finish to the innings with 32 from 23 balls.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Khan then made an immediate impact with the ball on his way to figures of four for 24.
Spirit skipper Dan Lawrence’s attempt to attack Khan early backfired, picking out Rovman Powell on the rope from his second ball, before Shimron Hetmeyer was judged lbw on review from the next.
Keaton Jennings hit 31 from 18 only to direct his normally reliable reverse sweep into the gloves of Banton as Khan again showcased the match-defining qualities that has made him a star in white-ball competitions across the world.

Russell responded by dispatching Khan out of Trent Bridge with a mighty six that got the 10,564 fans off their feet. The Windies all-rounder crunched another massive blow into the stands while John Turner had to be removed from the attack as a second beamer hit Russell.
But just as the hosts had started to feel the pressure, Luke Wood expertly produced a slower ball that kept low and found Russell’s off stump.

Matt Critchley offered some late hitting, with 37 from 30 balls, but Sam Cook closed him out and there was too much left to do as defeat left Spirit with just one win from their five games and their hopes of reaching the knockout stage all but over.

Meerkat Match Hero Khan, who also hit a six from the final ball of the Rockets’ innings, said: “It’s just about the length you have to bowl on this pitch which is quite important. The most important was pitching the ball in the areas I wanted to.
“That’s what makes this competition beautiful – playing against the best in the world. I always enjoy such competition with the good batters and that’s true about Russell.”

Foxes boss Thomas slams 'ridiculous' Hundred rule

Leicestershire head coach Alfonso Thomas has criticised The Hundred's "ridiculous" player participation rules.

The injury-hit Foxes lost in the One-Day Cup to Surrey on Tuesday and next play Yorkshire on Thursday, their fourth match in seven days.

And Thomas is frustrated that, while his side are struggling for numbers, a number of Leicestershire players have featured only occasionally for their Hundred teams.

He believes they would be better off playing for their county, if not selected for Hundred duty.

"The win on Sunday (against Sussex) came at a cost - we lost Ben Mike, we lost [Matt] Salisbury, we've got [Liam] Trevaskis with a strapped quad, Chris Wright who's got a [bad] ankle," Thomas told Talking Foxes on BBC Radio Leicester.

"What kills me is tonight we'll go and watch The Hundred and see a couple of our lads not play, which to me is an absolutely ridiculous rule.

"Just to sit out in the dugout and carry a couple of drinks."

Leicestershire have five players in Hundred franchises - batters Louis Kimber and Rishi Patel at Birmingham Phoenix, all-rounder Rehan Ahmed at Southern Brave and bowlers Scott Currie and Josh Hull both at Manchester Originals.

Patel and Kimber have played just two of Phoenix's five games, as has Ahmed for Brave and Hull for the Originals. Currie has played all five.

"For teams like Leicestershire, it's going to hurt more because of the size of our squad," said Thomas.

"This is the one downside of having a good campaign in the Blast because you're going to lose players."

Last year, only Ahmed and Callum Parkinson left the Foxes in the summer for The Hundred, with the former returning after just two matches, as they won the One-Day Cup.

However, this season the East Midlands club are fifth in Group B on six points after three wins and two defeats.

Northern Superchargers snuck into the top three after a rain-soaked trip to Cardiff ended in them sharing the points with Welsh Fire

After rain had fallen for most of the day a small window opener for a 25-ball match, with Superchargers managing just 26 for five as they struggled mightily to find their range.

Then, after just three balls were possible into Fire’s chase, the rain returned and the match was abandoned.

Nicholas Pooran drove David Willey for four from the first ball of the rain-reduced match but it was a rare boundary as none of the Superchargers batters reached double figures on a tricky wicket following the rain.

Matt Short and Pooran fell to edges behind the wicket while Harry Brook hit the only other four of the innings before skying Haris Rauf into the deep.

Ben Stokes and Adam Hose fell from consecutive balls trying to force shots before Ollie Robinson carved the only six of the innings, form the 22nd ball, over cover off Rauf.

Oval Invincibles claimed the most significant scalp of their title defence so far with a six-wicket over Southern Brave in their top-of-the-table clash at The Kia Oval.

Tom Curran claimed four wickets, his younger brother Sam chipping in with two, to restrict Brave to 118 for eight before a curious chase that saw Dawid Malan face 10 consecutive dot balls and Chris Jordan not concede a run from his first 11 deliveries.

Jordan Cox and Sam Curran eventually broke the shackles in a 58-run stand from 27 balls to usher the hosts over the line with 15 balls to spare.

James Vince was the only Brave batter who came to grips with the home attack, scoring 52 from 39 balls, as Invincibles moved a step closer to booking their place in the knockout stages.

Skipper Sam Curran has been central to a run of five wins in six games, and while he would claim a third successive Meerkat Match Hero award again tonight, it was his older brother Tom who took the limelight with the ball taking four for 24 in front of a crowd of 23,948.

The visitors slipped to 31 for four as wicket fell too regularly around Vince.

Sam Curran was unfurling his airplane celebration early when he bowled Alex Davies before Tom found a regulation edge from Andre Fletcher through to Sam Billings. Will Jacks bowled Leus du Plooy and Laurie Evans top-edged Adam Zampa to leave Brave immediately behind the game.

Captain Vince set about hauling his side back into the contest, sharing a 58-run stand with Kieron Pollard, who edged Sam Curran to give Billings his third catch after managing 18 from 15 balls.

Tom Curran was on a hat-trick from the final ball of the innings, removing Jofra Archer and Akeal Hossein from successive balls, before Craig Overton just about avoided the field and saw the ball run away to the rope.

Jacks thumped the first ball of the reply for six, only to get a leading edge to Overton two balls later, before the chase lost all momentum.

Malan did manage a heaved six before he simply could not locate the ball, eventually being well held by Archer at mid-on to depart for 14 from 31 balls.

But the in-form Sam Curran joined Cox and immediately set about putting the game to bed, the pair taking 23 from four Hosein deliveries to settle any nerves.

Hosein did get Sam Curran, but not before he added 35 from 18 balls, as Cox finished unbeaten on 46 from 29 balls.
Meerkat Match Hero, Sam Curran, said: “Huge win. The two form teams at the moment and a top of the table clash. We knew we had to win this to give us the best chance of going straight through to Lord’s (and reach the final).

“We have complemented each other really well with the ball this season. Towards the end we just had a swing and hope and it worked out.

“I’m really confident and enjoying the environment. I feel this team has got it right and hopefully we can do that for the rest of the tournament.”

Birmingham Phoenix won by 5 wickets
Moeen Ali and Ben Duckett made classy half-centuries as Birmingham Phoenix claimed a five-wicket win at Sophia Gardens to end Welsh Fire’s hopes of reaching The Hundred Eliminator and push themselves up to third in the table.

Chasing 147 for victory, the two England left-handers shared an opening stand of 114 in 73 deliveries, Moeen hitting eight fours and a six in his 46-ball 60, his highest ever score in The Hundred, before top-edging Matt Henry to David Payne.

Moeen’s departure brought Jamie Smith to the crease and England’s Test keeper looked in sublime touch, making 12 from his first three deliveries, until he was clean bowled by a Haris Rauf inducker.

Liam Livingstone, Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell departed in quick succession as Phoenix looked to finish the game in a hurry and boost their net run-rate but Duckett (54* off 31) held his nerve to steer his team to a crucial victory, Benny Howell hitting the winning runs with seven balls to spare.

Earlier, Sean Abbott (4-16) had starred with the ball for Phoenix, the Australian all-rounder collecting his second four-wicket haul of this season’s Hundred as Fire were restricted to 146-8.

Stephen Eskinazi played nicely for his 21-ball 30 before being clean bowled by Mousley but the rest of Fire’s top-order struggled, with Luke Wells undone by an Adam Milne slower ball and Joe Clarke and Tom Abell falling victim to Abbott.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore (54 from 32) injected some energy to the innings, hitting his first delivery for four and then dispatching Howell over the ropes. He hit five more fours in his rapid half-century – including three in succession off Tim Southee – until falling to Abbott, who then picked up his fourth when he had David Payne caught by Southee.

Matt Henry struck two boundaries off his compatriot Milne in the final set of the innings but it proved to be in vain as Fire’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage were extinguished.

Abbott, the Meerkat Match Hero, said: “It was a little bit tricky to sum up the conditions at first, but it was about going back to basics and trying to hit the top of the stumps with change-ups and then going from there.

“It’s definitely a very relaxed vibe amongst the group and I feel like we portray that when we go out and play the game. We’re always trying to put pressure on the other team, no matter the situation, and we’ve done that pretty well the last couple of games. It feels like there’s a good balance at the moment and everyone’s playing their roles really well.”

Adam Zampa took 4-17 as defending champions Oval Invincibles thrashed London Spirit by nine wickets to close in on a place in The Hundred final.

The Australia leg-spinner sparked a collapse that saw Spirit go from 40-1 to 96 all out with only three batters reaching double figures.

Invincibles then romped to victory with 37 balls to spare as Jordan Cox, recently called up to the England Test squad, bludgeoned his way to an unbeaten 61 from 30 balls.

Cox hit nine fours and his second six - smashed back over the bowler's head - sealed a comprehensive win.

England all-rounder Sam Curran also played a key role for Invincibles, taking 3-10 from 15 balls, while Tom Curran picked up 2-21.

Invincibles are two points clear at the top of the table, ahead of Southern Brave, and now have a significant advantage in terms of net run-rate as well.

A top-three spot has been clinched and a win over Trent Rockets on Wednesday evening would secure their place in next Sunday's Lord's final.

Already-eliminated Spirit stay bottom of the table.
