Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed and fast bowler Mohammad Ali have been rewarded for their strong first-class performances with maiden Test call-ups as Pakistan announced an 18-player squad for December’s three ICC World Test Championship matches against England.

Twenty-four-year-old Abrar is in red-hot form in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Before the start of the last round on Sunday (20 November), Abrar had claimed 43 wickets at an average of 21.95. He has recorded five five-wicket hauls in six matches and has played an integral role in turning his side into serious contenders to secure a berth in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.

Central Punjab’s Mohammad Ali has been the best fast bowler in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in the last two editions, taking 56 wickets. His 24 wickets, including two five wicket hauls, at 25.54 in six matches are the most for any fast bowler this first-class season. His 32 wickets at 22.78 in eight matches in 2021-22 were also the most for a fast bowler.

Uncapped Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Zahid Mehmood, who were part of the Test side for the three Tests against Australia earlier in the year, are the other two players to return to the side.

Pakistan squad for England Tests: Babar Azam (c) (Central Punjab), Mohammad Rizwan (vc & wk) (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Abdullah Shafique (Central Punjab), Abrar Ahmed (Sindh), Azhar Ali (Central Punjab), Faheem Ashraf (Central Punjab), Haris Rauf (Northern), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan), Mohammad Ali (Central Punjab), Mohammad Nawaz (Northern), Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Naseem Shah (Southern Punjab), Nauman Ali (Northern), Salman Ali Agha (Southern Punjab), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Sindh), Saud Shakeel (Sindh), Shan Masood (Balochistan) and Zahid Mehmood (Sindh)

There are four changes in the squad from Pakistan’s last Test assignment, which was in Sri Lanka that resulted in the two-Test series ending 1-1. The four players who are not part of the side are Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Fawad Alam and Yasir Shah.

Shaheen was unavailable for selection after he underwent appendicitis surgery on Sunday, which will require three-four weeks’ rest following which he will resume his two-week rehabilitation on his right knee.

Fawad managed 33 runs in four innings of three Tests against Australia earlier this year, while he scored 25 runs in his only Test in Sri Lanka. Hasan Ali took five wickets in his last four Tests against Australia and Sri Lanka, while Yasir Shah bagged nine wickets in Sri Lanka but has managed only 14 wickets in seven Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches to date.

Muhammad Wasim: “I want to congratulate all the players who have been selected for the historic Test series against England. We have selected this 18-man squad keeping in mind the form of the players, the conditions and the opposition.

“This series has provided opportunities to Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Zahid Mehmood. Abrar has been on the radar since his debut first-class season in 2020-21. He is in outstanding form this season, so it makes sense to make him available to Babar Azam so he can use the confidence and talent of this youngster in the upcoming series.

“Zahid is another bowler who has been in the plans. He has shown improvement over the years and has been part of the successive squads.

“We have boosted our fast bowling stocks with the best available talent. There is no doubt about the skills of Mohammad Wasim Jnr. He moves the new and old ball laterally at high pace, which is a huge plus for any side.

“Mohammad Ali has shown great patience and control, and his numbers speak for his consistency. He has been our best fast bowler in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 56 wickets at an average of 24 over the last two seasons.

“I am confident that this team will ensure that the upcoming Test series against England will end in the same manner as it did when they last toured Pakistan in 2005.”

The three Tests are part of the ICC World Test Championship and are scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi (1-5 December), Multan (9-13 December) and Karachi (17-21 December).

Each of the nine teams play six series – three at home and three away – in 2021-23 cycle. The upcoming series is Pakistan’s fifth - their last series will be the two Tests against New Zealand in December 2022 and January 2023. These three Tests will be England’s final appearance in the second edition of the World Test Championship.

Player support personnel: Mansoor Rana (manager), Saqlain Mushtaq (head coach), Shahid Aslam (assistant to head coach), Mohammad Yousuf (batting coach), Shaun Tait (bowling coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach), Abdul Majeed (fielding coach), Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi (media manager), Ammar Ahsan (digital content producer), Lt Col (retd) Atif Azad (security manager), Dr Najeeb Soomro (team doctor), Talha Ejaz (analyst) and Malang Ali (masseur).

Sarfaraz still there so all rumours of him being dropped are well... rumours

Decent squad, but i feel for Kamran Ghulam, he merited a chance. The lack of a dynamic batsman does worry me

I know no one wants to talk about him gives his t20 failures, but Haider Ali’s fc record merits in chance in tests

Based on the squad, id go with this 11.

1. Abdullah
2. Imam
3. Saud
4. Babar
5. Salman Ali Agha (id rather a proper batsman like Kamran, but we got to make do)
6. Rizwan
7. Nawaz
8. Faheem
9. Naseem
10. Haris
11. Abrar

Change of format but lack of names in middle order is consistent. Cant work out our middle order really.

Hasan Ali should have been picked for tests. His LOI bowling has fallen off a cliff but I still think he’s handy in tests, especially with no Shaheen

Kamran had a slight form decline this season.

Azhar Ali stays, he averages 85 this season no way will they drop him as he nears 100 tests. A bad couple of tests means Shan will come for him not Saud.

Hopefully Saud gets a go at 5 above Salman as he is having a top season.

I would have selected M Abbas and Zafar Gohar in place of M Wasim and Nauman Ali. Nauman is in atrocious form in domestic and M Wasim has little first class experience. Although M Ali seems a like-for-like replacement of M Abbas, I still would have kept Abbas in the squad because of his experience and decent domestic form.

Rest of the squad is fine.

Good to see Fawad dropped. Hopefully that’s the end of the line for him. Hopefully Saud will make debut instead of Salman Agha who is very lucky to keep his place (instead of Usman Salahuddin getting a chance).

You couldn’t drop Azhar with his form this season. With Abdullah, Imam, and Salman Agha/Saud Shakeel in 11, you still need some experience. But only one of Azhar and Fawad should have been kept keeping the future in mind and it is rightfully Azhar based on his form.

Unfortunately, Kamran Ghulam is having an average season. Also, Haider Ali needs to get back some semblance of form before he is picked for Pak again. He missed this entire season of Quaid Trophy, unlucky for him.

Good to see Yasir and Hassan dropped along with Fawad. Both are badly struggling in Quaid Trophy too.

Interested to see Haris in tests.

From tape ball cricket to a test cap. What a journey.

Let’s see if he has the fitness and longevity for the format.

Why M ALI choose over Hassan Ali? is he just another trundler?

Hassan is averaging 41 with the bowl this season and was struggling with form in international cricket. Mohammad Ali has been the best pacer combined in the last two seasons with bowling average of under 25. In 18 team structures one could have argued about the pitches and opposition, here in 6 teams he has outperformed other pacers. He is mid 130s by the looks of it.

Pace is just one aspect of bowling otherwise few pretty pace bowlers around but would struggle at test level if they are brought in now.

It looks like Pakistan will go in with seaming tracks for the English series. Risky strategy considering England have Anderson.

Nauman Ali's selection in his current form where he is struggling to take wickets and is averaging 49 with the ball is a surprise.

11

Abdullah
Imam nepo
Azhar senior
Babar
Saud
Rizwan
Agha/faheem(depending on conditions)
Nawaz
Abrar
Naseem
Rauf

The problem is there is no special players who can take place..Nauman has done nothing so has Zahid but there is no body else..Gohar has only taken wickets in the last few wickets and looks like a club bowler in the current match. As a matter of fact they all do so I wouldnt havent dropped Yasir to be honest.

Faheem was dropped unfairly. Hopefully he geta a go in first couple of tests.

Nouman ali selection is quite bizarre. M.wasim keep selecting his nothern buddies.hopefully nawaz is prefer in playing 11

Our bowling without shaheen looks very bad .Seems like we will struggle to take 20 wicket

Faheem was dropped unfairly. Hopefully he geta a go in first couple of tests.
He needs to improve on both fronts - neither effective as a pacer, nor reliable as a batter.

His speed has gone down since his debut and is pedestrian, while Wasim is a notch above. However Wasim is nothing more than a tail-ender with the bat, so can’t play him as an all-rounder.

I've never heard of this Abrar fellow- does he bat left but bowl right? Or is he bowling left arm wrist spin? Can anybody tell me about his bowling?

Always a good idea to play a wrist spinner vs England. And I guess to move on from Yasir.

In an ideal world Shadab would be the allrounder + wrist spinner but he has barely any FC experience.

Faheem averages 34 with the ball and 32 with the bat which is more then good enough for the options we have

He is a dire white ball cricketer but had done no wrong to justify axing from red ball cricket. Once again selectors confusing betwen formats.

Ajantha Mendis type. Bowls leg break, offies, carrom ball etc.

He is classified as a leg spinner, but spins the ball from his fingers. Has a few mystery varieties and is hard to pick.

Is leading the QEA bowling charts by a huge margin, he could outfox England and catch them by surprise.

Nauman Ali, Zahid Mehmood, Wasim and Agha Salman - 4 poor selections.

Nauman has been toothless in 2022 whether it is tests or Fc. Zafar Gohar has performed in county and QeA both.

Zahid Mehmood can neither bowl with red ball nor with the white one. Another pathetic selection.

Agha Salman - bits and pieces. can't bowl, can't bat. We saw that in SL series. Kamran Ghulam can atleast bat like a pro.

M Wasim Jr - Hasn't played a single FC match this season. Doesn't have much experience with the red ball either.

Powerpoint selector and his stunts for spotlight. :facepalm

Majed, Saqlain, Yousuf keep thier placing.
Why is Sarfraz keep getting selected? Fahim, Wasim Jr, Nauman and Zahid are waste of selection for sure. Hasibullah should have selected ahead of Sarfraz.

What are the pitches like now in domestic cricket in Pakistan? favour the fast bowlers still or have they produced better wickets in recent past?

What has Kamran Ghulam done wrong? How is he not better than Salman Agha?

Perfect squad.

Only issue is Kamran Ghulam not getting a chance, but the rest is good.

Okay squad. Noman and Zahid lucky to be there.

What has Kamran Ghulam done wrong? How is he not better than Salman Agha?

Form slightly dipped this season with average of 39 despite fairly flat pitches.

Salman Ali Agha can perform better than Saud in International. Saud is a very Haris Sohail like batter always out on loose delivery. Salman Ali Agha may not look good but He is a fighter cricketer.

Form slightly dipped this season with average of 39 despite fairly flat pitches.

Surely he deserves some leeway after being good for the seasons prior without getting his chance?

Salman Agha has a career average of 38

With no Afridi..Hasan Should have been picked.
Bit unfair on Fawad...
Needed new keeper.

Some new faces Mohammad Ali and Abrar. Haven't heard about Mohammad Ali before, is he a batter ?

Overall pace attack looks weak in absence of Shaheen, should have included Abbas.

Mohammad Ali is a right seam bowler for Central Punjab who averages 24 across 21/22 and 22/23 seasons.

Agree.

The 4 poorest selections, if ever there were the 4 to make.

All of them have been trash and nothing special.

Mubasir deserved a chance.

Muhammad Umar should have been selected instead of Muhammad Ali.Umar has a nice action and looks quicker than Ali.

Awful selection in zahid mehmod, nauman Ali and wasim jnr. How on earth the these 3 selected. Nauman has been awful for Pakistan and even more so in domestics this season too. Zahid mehmod is up there with the worst cricketer in FC while Mr so called all rounder in a no 10 at best and an awful bowler for tests.

I feel that just because someone balls doesn't mean they are not a proper batsman. Agha is a batter. He happens to ball a bit also

As expected mediocre squad selectiond

Shan Masood
Agha Salman
Wasim jnr
Azhar Ali
Nauman Ali

expect pakistan to pick combination 5 batsmen (including tail enders Azhar and Agha), a plastic all rounder at 7 and a non existant spin attack.

clearly mo wasim hasnt learnt anything from last 2 test series.

How old is Mohammed Ali?

The squad will really need to bat well to beat this England side..hopefully abrar foxes them..I have heard M Ali will be tge workhorse and help naseem and Haris.

Expecting a loss but hope we fight till the last..

We do not have spinners in our domestic cricket, these are the best options we have.

PP’s favourite Zafar Gohar has also been ordinary throughout this season.

Decent squad

Imam
Abdullah
Azhar
Babar
Saud
Rizwan
Faheem
Nawaz
Abrar
Rauf
Ali

Batting to 9 and 5 bowling options. Must play this side to have a chance against the English juggernaut.

Mohammad Ali looks a dibbly dobbly workhorse. Abbas could have been a better shout, as he has international experience aswell.

Abbas has been worked out by other teams, his 120-125 kph stuff won't work anymore.

I think they want to play nasseem so either nawaz misses out or faheem depending on on pitch...like your 11 by tge way..makes sense..

Mohammad Ali has a short run-up but he's not a dibbly dobbler. Strong shouldered guy who can hit the deck hard and move the ball both ways. I'm glad he's been selected. He has been the standout seamer last couple of seasons.

Muhammad Umar should have been selected instead of Muhammad Ali. Umar has a nice action and looks quicker than Ali.

I think the selection is fair. Sindh has a good pace attack and one of them, including Muhammad Umar, could've been picked but M. Ali deserved it more, I think.

Nauman Ali over Zafar is the only debatable call here. Otherwise it’s a relevant squad.

Muhammad Umar needs to do it for one more season to get called up. Same for Mubasir, who’ll be expected to kick on with both his off spin and batting.

Similarly, Hurraira should play one more full season of QEA. By that time, Azhar would have retired, so there’ll be a natural space for Hurraira in the squad.

Zafar gohar hard done by again. How many more years are they going to "invest" in Nauman when he is already past it.

As for the batting, should've gone for someone like mubashir or huraira to blood some younglings.

The test match pace bowling reserves are poor without Shaheen Afridi.

We do not have spinners in our domestic cricket, these are the best options we have.

PP’s favourite Zafar Gohar has also been ordinary throughout this season.

pakistan strength has always been its pace bowling. Apart from trying Abrar out, there is no point trying out other mediocre options or TTF spinners. Dhani should have been picked as extra pacer over spinner.

we never produce rank turners in pakistan conditions. littering side with mediocre bits and pieces players like nawaz and agha aint helping.

I think they want to play nasseem so either nawaz misses out or faheem depending on on pitch...like your 11 by tge way..makes sense..

Yeah forgot about Naseem. Our batting is mediocre so do need that depth though.

I'm interested if the English keep playing Ultra aggressive away from home.

Muhammad Ali's selection is 100% desereved.

Best pacer in last 2 qea seasons plus looks good to the eye too.

Decent pace, good height and gets some great movement and bounce. Much much much better selection than Abbas.

Agree.

All of them have been trash and nothing special.

Mubasir deserved a chance.

Although I would have picked Zafar Gohar (performed in county and Pak FC matches plus experience is very important for spinners) ahead of one of Nauman or Zahid, but neither of them merit selection as specialist spinners. Mubasir should have been picked as a spin allrounder ahead of one of Nawaz or Agha (Agha's bowling has been innocuous in Tests and he doesn't make it to the team as a batter), however, I do think Mubasir needs some more experience in domestic for his own improvement.

Slight dip in form means nothing. Kamran Ghulam should 100% have been here.

Azhar Ali has no buiseness playing international cricket.

33 years old but a good test seamer.

I'd take him over Abbas and even Hamza anyday.

Just looking at his numbers - KG averaged 25 last year so he hasn't pushed on since that record breaking 20-21 season.

Goes without saying Azhar should've been retired - ideally after the 2018/19 South Africa tour.

This is honestly demoralising for a guy like Kamran Ghulam

Some people have it much harder in life than others.

33 years old but a good test seamer.

33 years old Pakistani cricketer, meaning 37 years old in reality. I am all for giving chances to domestic performers but that age is on the higher side for a pacer.

Is that for everyone?

Everyone is 4 years older or only the players you don’t like?

How much did he play? He missed a lot of games last season iirc. Even this season, he played a couple really tough back to the wall innings.

For me, Ghulam has shown enough and I'm already sold on him as a test player. The guy knows how to build an innings and delivers under pressure.

He's 30 officially - https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/mohammad-ali-1158175

Surprisingly he only made his FC debut in 2018, would be interesting if PP could interview him to ask why. Seems reflective of our pre-2019 domestic setup where players just got lost in the system.

Here's some footage. Like how he's willing to give the ball some air and let it swing. Will probably feature in Pindi Test.

Pros and cons of current selections

Pros: Rewarding of performance in QeT : Abrar and M. Ali, and including Wasim Jr, dropping of Hasan Ali , Yasir Shah and Fawad , keeping Wasim Jr

Cons;
Keeping the time and tested failures in recent time and oldies : Sarfraz, Azhar and most useless of them all Faheem Ashraf ( he is just an additional lower order , low class batsman and not a bowler ) and ignoring Huraira.

Also not a good idea to play Rauf n test , he is too good a WBC player , not to be risked for test matches .

This is the best squad he could have conjured. I personally would have preferred Kamran Ghulam over either of Salman Ali Agha or Saud Shakeel. The rest is best he could have hoped for.

The lack of spin options is a concern and I know Hasnain is not part of this squad but I would like to see Hasnain being part of tests in SENA conditions.

So Azhar Ali was dropped after a poor run of scores replaced with Fawad, now fawad is no longer in the squad. Yet Azhar is retained? why drop him if your going to continue picking same garbage and recycling it? Both players should have been dumped ages ago.

Then we have plastic all rounder Agha salman.

If pakistan are going to pick a 5 man bowling attack, then you need to pick your best 5 batsmen to put runs on the board. Aghas bowling id rubbish and as a batsmen alone hes not one of the best 5 that could be selected.

Instead we are going to end up with a load of mediocre bits and pieces players in test side. clearly shows no faith in a so called 5 man bowling attack if yoir going to pick a plastic all rounder at 5 as the so called 6th bowling option.

i can see a team being picked with Agha, nawaz, wasim jnr in it. if thats case i hope england humiliate pakistan.

Mo wasim needs to go as does Babar as test skipper.
