We need azhar to regain form desperately in the next innings for the odis

Azhar shouldnt open. Hes a number 3...

Based on one innings??

Azhar's game screams opener. Great against swing, seam. Not so good vs spin. Game built on patience.

And he has played great knocks by virtually coming in the first over.

Let's see what Jameel bhai has prepared this time around. Hopefully this starts turning square from day three onwards. Haven't seen a true turner in a long time.

Youre right but i just think he has that dravid role

This basically, anyone who is a number 3 is also an opener. All in the mind.

So we are still facing problem in opening? In Test match our opener can't bat more than 5 overs. Alarming situation.

Azhar is our best batsman after younis. He should bat at 3. After younis retires maybe azhar can go 4 but hes just that rock in the lineup who should bat 3 imo

malik scared of the ball at international level

yeah he was scared of the ball in the SL series. He was scared of the ball in the Zim series. He was scared of the ball when he scored 248 in the first test. If seeing off the new ball is being scared then I don't know your cricket.

We can't sacrifice Azhar by making him open. He's been a very good #3 for us and that is where he should bat and as he matured, he should move down the order, not upwards.

Hafeez and Babar Azam will be a good opening partnership.

Hope that Azhar plays a longer inning in the second inning of the match.

Much needed match practice missing for the one-days as he is a vital part of the line up.

There is bounce in this wicket. Moeen bhai, Rashid bhai and sinner Patel could be useful here.

Things aren't looking good for us tbh, can find ourselves 2-3 down in the first session. Anderson and Broad seem to have a bit more bite in their bowling this morning on this surface; hopefully Hafeez will play his shots because he's terrible when he goes into his shell.

Azhat and Sarfi have been letting the team down in this series so far, except for Shafiq.

Azhar and Sarfraz have been deadweight; hopefully Sarfraz shows up with the bat in this game.

England pacers are the ones who trouble us. We feast on their spinners. So what do england do. They play a left arm spinner who averages 40 with the ball in first class cricket...

Hajis have been letting the team down in this series so far, except for Shafiq.

From what weve seen in zim series and a few of his shots here, sarfraz looks in form. Im worried about azhar. He needs to find form before odi series because he even looked bad vs zim. Hopefully next innings

technically Azhar is kinda always opening as one of opener departs in the first few overs. Azhar also opens in the One days and has been successful. he is naturally an opener.

Haji Azhar should continue to open, he is our best bet in England and Australia next year against the new ball.

His form might suffer in the short-term but it will be beneficial in the long-term. He has shown in his career so far that he has the ability to adjust - from leg spinner to a top order bat; from a tuk tuk ODI batsman to a dynamic 90 SR player.

Worst time to lose form. Just as he was improving his cricketing career.

Rameez saying Malik never bothers about playing at any number.

I guess he has forgotten Don's rants, where he blamed his wrong batting number and being shuffled for 10 years of failures. :)))

Perhaps people just fear Don. :malik

Runs have dried up , Pakistan problem is that they just block and block and finally get out

When did he play tests against srilanka ? Zim? Yes he should have been out in the first innings but got lucky with the no ball, on the flattest pitch in ages.

Second innings in that test what happened ?

You are getting confused between tests and ODIs, please don't.

Anyways he is jumping up and down, every short ball has him in two minds. All this on pitches in UAE. Don't want to imagine him back in England.

Azhar and Sarfraz have been deadweight; hopefully Sarfraz shows up with the bat in this game.

This is Azhar's first test of the series, though.

"Imran Khan not playing, this is England's best chance of leveling the series!" Aye, Hassan. Like Tim Bresnan or Eldine Baptiste, he's a lucky charm

Cricinfo !!

Azhar has played one inning and he is already deadweight? Really?

Azhar shouldnt open just for the sake of it. He should because it helps the team.

a- He is the best at playing new ball. Great technique against swing, seam.

b- Not so dominant, not even when he is well set. Which while not a nessecity; it still is a good trait to have for a no.3.

c- Not so good against spin. Esp when he has to bat against a spinner from the word go. All the more reason for him opening.

d- He has not come out to open but has been an opener plently of times before, most of the times we were one down in no time. Azhar has come in in the early overs and gone on to play some fine knocks. The tour of SL in 12, this year in SL, Eng in 10, vs Eng in 12 and so on.

e- It allows Haris to come in at three. Who is another good player of pace and swing. Can take the game away from the opposition as well.
That way your top order looks more solid and competent. A thing which will be vital come Eng 2016.

f- And lastly, no one has a better technique/skill set for that job.

Malik batting at 3 in England is a disaster waiting to happen.

You have to question the wisdom of the likes of Misbah & Waqar.

Has Cook lost the toss again?

Given that ENG got close to winning the first test and close to saving the second, one wonders if winning one or two tosses out of three might have meant a difference in the eventual scoreline, given that batting first is a massive advantage in UAE.

Malik looking ungainly as usual against the new ball against a quality seamer, he really shouldn't be batting at 3.

Number 5/6 is ideal for him. He can be a key player in Tests (already is MVP in ODIs) in UAE/subcontinent if he's used properly, which isn't happening at the moment.

Hafeez has always looked the most fluent Pak batsmen all these years.

In this whole series too, been a treat to watch.

Is there moisture in the pitch?

He has been deadweight so far in this series. Otherwise he's one of the top 2-3 players for Pakistan these days and will be for the next 6-7 years.

All made up stuff, no he isn't the best at playing the new ball. Potentially Haris is, but you don't make your best players openers--SPECIALISTS open, not makeshifts.

Who's a specialist? The one who has opened for most of his first class career with a good average.

I hope it clears your confusion now.

Credit to Hafeez. He's worked so hard and become a decent test opening bat.

Will be exposed overseas, but so will Misbah & YK.

Once again you show how much you know about Pakistan cricket.

Azhar Ali played most of his first-class career as an opener when he was selected for Pakistan.

He is no make-shift.

Just one thing. You are in love with 'King Misbah' Hawkeye - but why not say anything when he is the one who picks Malik at 3? :)))

Tell me. Where would you play malik. We cant afford misbah and younis to be exposed to new ball. Sarfraz naturally bats 7 being a keeper. Second new ball comes at 6 and shafiq bats too well there. Malik is not a permanent member of this test team and management knows this. Haris sohail will replace him at soon

Don't just blindly throw around stuff. Give me number of matches played as an opener and its result.

Let me show you what he's capable of as a Test opener.

Averages 20 when he has opened for Pakistan. Overall average 43.

Stop trying to act smart -- it's clear who is and isn't an opener, and I'm glad Pakistan team management has played him at 3 as a regular.

Malik at 3 is always a disaster.

Azhar is a number 3. In test cricket malik isnt good enough to disrupt the batting lineup like this

Come to Malik Support thread, why're you're afraid of that thread? :srini

We'll discuss there how he's the next coming of Bradman, and the next Test ATG from Pakistan. All hare krishnas except you gather there.

Malik is a no-go at any position in Test cricket.

Azhar is a specialist...

He's opened quite a bit in FC cricket, and he opens in ODI cricket. He's technically very good against the moving ball.

Yes four matches. What a sample size.

If he gets a ton in the next innings, how will those numbers look??

Thats like taking four random matches in the begining of his career and arguing that he is no no.3.

I know it's just the first innings but there's looks absolutely nothing in the pitch to inspire the pace bowlers. I think we should stop playing quicks in SC just like resting a spinner in green tops.

Just because he is capable of opening doesn't mean that he should. He's going to be one of our main sources of runs in England and Australia. Having him come at one drop would ensure that the chances of him going back to the pavilion cheaply are minimized.

Hawkeye can never admit he is wrong.

Why did they open with him today then? :)))

How old are you? Maybe if I know your age I will more understanding of why you post such rubbish.

Throwing such statements after getting owned only shows your 'age'. Low to resort to such tactics. :baelish

They're called tactics, we couldn't have let your darling Masood open, who doesn't deserve to play even club cricket.

Malik shouldnt be in test team as much as i like him in odis. Babar and haris are technically much better

Wait till Wahab Riaz bowls here.
