Saim Ayub and Khurram Shahzad named in national Test squad for the first time

Faheem Ashraf, Mir Hamza and Mohammad Wasim Jnr make returns to the Test side

Chief selector Wahab Riaz has announced an 18-member Pakistan Test squad for the tour to Australia comprising three matches scheduled from 14 December 2023 to 7 January 2024. This will be Wahab’s first assignment since he took charge of the national men’s selection committee last week.

Shan Masood will be leading the side in his first assignment as Test captain. He was named Pakistan's captain for the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle after taking over the reins from Babar Azam last week.

Left-handed opening batter Saim Ayub has earned his maiden call-up to the Test team after an impressive run in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24. The 22-year-old scored 553 runs in four matches for Karachi Whites and had three centuries to his name, including a match-winning double century against Faisalabad in the final of the tournament. He continued his form in the Pakistan Cup (one-day tournament), where he was named the best batter of the tournament, ending as the competition’s highest run-getter.

Right-arm fast bowler Khurram Shahzad has also been awarded his maiden Test call-up, on the back of a successful domestic season thus far. The 23-year-old was the highest wicket-taker of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24 with 36 wickets in eight matches at an average of 20.31 and picked up 13 wickets at 16.62 in the recently concluded Pakistan Cup.

Pace bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, who last appeared in Tests for Pakistan during England’s tour of Pakistan in late 2022 has returned to the squad.

Left-arm pacer Mir Hamza, who registered 32 wickets at 20.88 in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24, and right-arm pacer Mohammad Wasim Jnr are making a return to the squad as well. The two fast bowlers were part of Pakistan’s squad during New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan that took place from December 2022 to January 2023.

Pakistan squad for Australia Tests: Shan Masood (captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi

Chief selector Wahab Riaz, reflecting on the squad selected for the Australia tour, said: “The squad has been assembled keeping in mind the challenging Australian conditions. We have kept the pitches in mind and added more pace bowling resources to the team to ensure that the management can be flexible with the team combinations in all three Test matches.

“Saim Ayub has been added to the squad after the extraordinary domestic season he has had this year. He has impressed with the bat during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy and Pakistan Cup, pushing the case for his selection. His inclusion will strengthen our solid batting line-up.

“Pakistan has started off the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 really well, after their success in Sri Lanka earlier this year. We hope that the team can carry this momentum ahead in Australia as well. We have tried to ensure that the team has all relevant resources to find success in Australia.”

The squad will assemble in Rawalpindi on 22 November for a training camp ahead of the tour. The camp is scheduled to run from 23 to 28 November at Pindi Cricket Stadium. The team will fly out on 30 November from Lahore. Some additional players have also been invited to feature in the training camp. The players called for the camp are Arshad Iqbal, Kashif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usama Mir and Usman Qadir.

Full schedule:

1st Test – Perth, 14-18 December 2023

2nd Test – Melbourne, 26-30 December 2023

3rd Test – Sydney, 3-7 January 2024

How do you rate this test squad for Australia tour?

It's fine I guess. Doesn't really matter who we pick when the end result is gonna be hiding regardless.

Hopefully they don't throw Saim in the deep end when other batsman try run away after their inevitable failures.

Also, I like the look of this Kashif Ali guy. Does anyone know how old he is?

Good for Khurram and Saim .
I think this will be XI . I would like Rizwan ahead of Agha .

Imam
Abdullah
Shan
Babar
Saud
Sarfraz
Agha
Amir/Faheem
Shaheen
Hassan
Hamza/wasim/khurram

This is the problem with pct. No consistency in selection.

Hurraira was selected in squad for SL series on back of 2 consecutive top scorer awards in QEA. Didn't even play a single game and is dropped.

Kamran Ghulam suffered the same fate earlier.

Why is this dud called Imam still in squad? He's done nothing of note in his entire test carrier.

Reports emerging that harris rauf refused to play in test series against Australia. However he will be available for test selection.

If Masood was smart, he would drop himself to number 4 and play Babar at 3.

Masood is a proven failure in the top 3. He will never average more than 32-33 opening or batting at 3, but perhaps Mr. Zero Talent can get a new life at 4 which is relatively easier position to bat at.

Called it back in December when he faked an injury after getting mauled by England in the first Test.

One taste of Test cricket was enough for the fake speed demon.

Hmmm. So what do you think he will achieve by batting at 4? You think he can perform at 4?

There is another Mr. Zero Talent rivaling Masood and he happens to be an opener too :imam so I don't think him opening would change much.

is Naseem still injured ? I thought he will recover by the time actual tour start ? without him we should rather forfiet the tour and save the humiliation, likes of which even last Pak tours down under haven't seen. This bowling won't get 20 Oz wickets in 3 test and 6 innings combined.

Pace attack will be one of the worst ever to tour Australia. Looks absolutely mediocre.

80 mph trundler Mir Hamza in Australia ?

Shaheen and Hasan should start. 3rd seamer will get smashed whether it's Hasan or Mir or Khurram.

Kashif Ali should have been selected.

Need a bit of pace upfront .

Wahab Riaz presser:

"Naseem Shah will hopefully be able to bowl at 50-60% after three weeks. Mohammad Hasnain has started running and sprinting. He's started bowling last week but he'll need a couple of weeks to build up his workload. Ihsanullah continues to undergo rehab,”

Number 4 could help him avoid the new ball on most occasions. He is a proven failure in the top 3.

Imam is no Alaistair Cook but he still better than Masood.

Blessings in disguise i guess, he will be getting trashed and mauled by aussie batsmen anyhow

Heard it somewhere that imam was also avoiding this tour initially as he is getting married soon. God knows why our players are so unprofessional.

Maybe we should give these newbies a chance before we write them off before a ball is bowled, yes it will be a struggle but you never know

Saim is an excellent selection. Him and Huraira are the future in tests.

Hope we see the last of Imam this tour.

Faheem, Hasan, Mir will get smashed. Hope they just carry drinks. You need pace in Australian pitches, even Boult, Southee get smashed.

Why Imam and nauman ali got selected.Imam can't play bouncers and the first match is in Perth.Nauman Ali will achieve nothing. They can get few overs of spin from Agha and no need of any spinner to have 7 batsmen. They should have got another middle order batsmen.

Our pace attack looks so bland. We are missing an express-fast bolwer.
And I hope Ayub starts ahead of Imam. If Imam couldn't play the short ball in India, how will he cope in Australia?

4 seamer strategy is highly necessary.

Happy with the selection of Jamaal. I hope he bats at number 7 for Pakistan
Amir Jamal is nothing more than a no 9. His bowling is awful too. He will be going at 7 an over.

Would have liked to have seen Asad, Omair and Sharjeel given a go but otherwise decent selections

My XI would be:
1. Shan
2. Saim
3. Saud
4. Babar
5. Salman
6. Sarfraz
7. Jamal
8. Abrar
9. Mir Hamza
10. khurram
11. Shaheen

Can we use this to drop him forever. He’s truly a mediocre cricketer.
He may take retirement from tests if dont want to play tests but refusing to tour one country and available for others is a very bad excuse

The same team which couldn’t beat Peshawar in the final is expected to beat Australia.

This attack is even worse than the last tour. Subhan Allah, 300s on offer for everyone. Warner to retire in style and with a bang.

Doesn't look great but not like we have loads of obvious alternatives

It's going to be a whitewash but would like to see us at least have a clear strategy and a plan looking towards the future

Also, if Saim gets a game, then at least give him a run and not ditch him after a failure or two

Pakistan in the last 2 test series have banked heavily on a tactic that basically ran Yasir Shah into the ground while the seamers rotated around him.

We need seamers who can bowl a long spell with hopefully tight overs. Aussies are well used to pace and bounce. We aint bouncing them out. We need to try and tie them up.

Saim
Abdullah
Babar
Shan
Saud
Rizwan
Jamal/ Agha depending on conditions
Shaheen
Nauman
Wasim Jr
Mir Hamza

Mir Hamza has been consistent performer in domestic circuit. He deserved this chance. He has 105 FC in his account and bagged 418 wickets, at just age of 31. He will be the backbone of Pakistan Test sqaud.

I think Saim is getting a run no matter what from here-on. He is the only bright prospect in Pakistan cricket at the moment, and we really need a positive impact player in the top order.

Imam might lose his career in the coming few months. Saim and Omar Bin Yousuf both waiting in the wings.

Anything other than 3-0 defeat will be an achievement, experienced players should be given a go no point throwing in youngsta beauty

Shafiq
Imam
Shan
Babar
Saud
Sarfraz
Faheem
SSA
Hassan
WasimJr.
Abrar
-----------

Will be very tough with tail starting at 7

Australia should have never invited Pakistan for 3 test matches. Not more than 2.

Warner will have a memorable exist.

I would definitely be giving the new players a chance during the 3 tests , odds are we will lose 3/0 so use this opportunity to test all your bench strength

Imam ul Haq
Abdullah Shafique
Shan Masood
Babar Azam
Saud Shakeel
Sarfaraz Ahmed
Amir Jamal
Hassan Ali
Shaheen Afridi
Mir Hamza
Abrar Ahmed

No Saim Ayub. Either Imam, Shan and a couple of others get exposed or they prove us wrong. Give Ayub the last test match of the series.

Sorry, no. Just no.

Did you see him bowl in the recent home tests?

He was barely hitting 125k and failed to pick a single wicket iirc.

Sameen Gul should have been selected. Even the fast bowler Wahab riaz doesn’t seem to have any sense to select pace bowlers for Australia.

Mir Hamza and the short Khurram Shehzad is not gonna do anything there. Wasim jr with zero experience in red ball cricket will not do anything great

He may take retirement from tests if dont want to play tests but refusing to tour one country and available for others is a very bad excuse
He is a mediocre bowler and he has done a good thing for Pakistan and himself by opting out otherwise CWC + adding this test tour would’ve have bring an end to his cricketing career. Travis head and Warner would make another record if Haris bowls.

There's no squad Wahab could've picked to give us a cat in hell's chance of winning in Australia.

Contrary to popular belief, our bowlers not our batsmen are the biggest reason for our awful Australia record. Forget 20 wickets - Pakistan haven't taken 10 wickets in 5 out of the last 7 innings in Australia. On those 2 occasions we did, we conceded 429 and 580 !

This attack's scarcely any better and is a reflection of the lack of bowling depth in Pakistan. In Australia you need guys with decent pace who hit the deck hard and rely more on seam than swing through the air, with height being a bonus but not compulsory.

Sadly there aren't many in Pakistan fitting that bill. Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza will be cannon fodder. Three pace bowling ARs is overkill and none are worldbeaters.

A semi-competitive Test or two is the height of my expectations.

4 seamer strategy is highly necessary.

Happy with the selection of Jamaal. I hope he bats at number 7 for Pakistan
but both faheem ashraf and aamir jamal were not needed. Just waste of space. Either one should be in the squad.

@Mamoon he is smart enough to see the writing on the wall as well. He knows he will be carted all over the park by the likes of Warner, Head, etc.

Instead his made the wiser decision to play the BBL and make the big bucks.

On merit Khurram Shezad is a good selection, because in domestic this guy is performing well, but his lack of pace in Australian bouncy wickets will be an issue. Aamir Jamal is also a great selection as he is an allrounder we should focus on.

I think instead of faheem ashraf, they should had selected Shahnawaz Dahani
