A red card for 2 yellows can't be over turned 🤣🤦‍♂️

Then this is just appalling, inept refereeing in the highest order.

That first yellow was as bad a decision you'll get in any sport or walk of life

Forget the still photo he caught him on the shin. Was just as bad as nketitah last week which he got away with

Was there intent: No
Did he touch the ball first: Yes
Did he go over the ball: Yes
Was it at pace: No

There has to be intent and if it was dangerous play then you have to see the force with which he went into the tackle. All the referee saw when he went to the monitor was a still picture which makes it look bad without taking into account the other factors.

Also remember the referr initially only gave it a yellow. So to overturn that decision, why was he only shown one still photo?

You can never review yellow cards, that's always been case. There should be no reason to do so.

Yes 1st one wasn't a yellow. But 2nd was stupid and naive. So jota should have use his brain

Also regarding the straight red,
I agree with Shearer, Richards, Neville and Carraghers views on it

Neville made plenty of those tables so no shock he's defending it. When someone ends up with a broken leg again, people might see sense

There doesn’t have to be intent for it to be a red, the requirement for serious foul play is endangering an opponent, which he unintentionally did, with a poor and potentially bone shattering tackle. Red.

Exactly, let's be real what player is going to show "intent" to injury someone. Unless it's Roy Keane vs Alfie haaland

We've seen legs broken in past and players and managers then use excuse they aren't that type of player.

I'm all for tough tackles but that was a leg breaker and rightly a red

imagine Klopp’s reaction if that tackle had been on a Liverpool player.

Honestly, watching it live, it didn't look a red to me.
That for me was not a leg breaking tackle. The picture VAR showed the referee was damming.

What about the fact that it was initially a yellow and the ref was just asked to see a still picture?
The ref shouldn't have given a yellow it 1st place, it was a red.

If full video was shown it would still be a red.

If that's a yellow card tackle then refs are clueless

Having watched it back, it wasnt a red as Jones rolled off the ball, which he made contact with first. This is football, no intention of dangerous play or not attempting to play the ball.

The VAR showed a still frame to the ref when he first approached the monitor.

It seems VAR team yesterday were working hard to ensure everything goes against LFC.

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: 'VAR error undermined sporting integrity' - Reds

Liverpool say "sporting integrity has been undermined" by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) error in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League loss to Tottenham.

In a statement on Sunday, the club said they will "explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution."

VAR failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal for offside with the match goalless.

The VAR officials were stood down from duty for the rest of the weekend.

Governing body for referees, PGMOL has said the decision to disallow the goal was "a significant human error".

Liverpool say that explanation is "unacceptable" and called for a "review with full transparency."

Liverpool are to appeal against the red card given to Curtis Jones during their controversial 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Jones was sent off for fouling Yves Bissouma on 26 minutes after a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention.

Referee Simon Hooper initially gave Jones a yellow card for the challenge but changed his decision after going to the pitchside monitor.

Midfielder Jones, 22, faces a three-game ban if the card is not overturned.

If the dismissal is upheld, he would miss Liverpool's Premier League games against Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

On Sunday, the Reds issued a statement after VAR failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal for offside, with the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium goalless.

The club said sporting integrity has been undermined after the governing body for referees PGMOL said the decision to rule out the goal was a significant human error.

As an Arsenal fan I hate to see Tottenham win, yet this result probably favours us as we all all know Spurs are one game away from going on their usual losing streak snd Liverpool are the real contenders for the title.

However, I just can't comprehend what occurred during that game.
If this was in Pakistan or another undeveloped country, people would be shouting corruption or match fixing...

It really was that bad

Curtis Jones: Liverpool unsuccessful with bid to overturn midfielder's red card at Tottenham Hotspur

Curtis Jones is set to serve a three-match Premier League suspension after an appeal to overturn the red card he received in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur was unsuccessful.

The midfielder was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma in the 26th minute of the fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, that was upgraded to a straight red following intervention by the Video Assistant Referee, Darren England.

Jones will now be unavailable for the Reds' encounters with Brighton & Hove Albion, live on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota will also serve a one-match suspension following his sending-off for two yellow cards, ruling him out of Sunday's trip to the American Express Community Stadium.

Something dodgy has taken place for sure. The VAR sounded half asleep or not willing to give the goal, pretending he was making a different call. This man was abroad 2 days, his contacts and messages should be investigated. Fixing is huge in football now, only the English are deluded into thinking English football is clean.

VAR should be in the stadium, should be watching the game, meaning you'd see the flag raised! A bloke getting paid huge sums and not watching the game is grounds for dismissal.

Liverpool 2-0 Union Saint-Gilloise: Ryan Gravenberch scores first goal for Reds in Europa League win

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are "over" their defeat to Tottenham after Ryan Gravenberch scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield in the Europa League.

Gravenberch capitalised on an error from Union goalkeeper Anthony Moris to finish from close-range just before the break after Darwin Nunez missed a sitter. Diogo Jota sealed the win off the bench in stoppage-time as Liverpool put Saturday's VAR controversy behind them.

Asked about Jota's response to being red carded on the weekend, Klopp said: "How should he deal with it? I knew it would be difficult. That [game] is long ago and we are over that and Diogo is over it as well. We are not children."

On a subdued night at Anfield, Liverpool got through the game against the Belgian league leaders despite a sub-par performance and now sit atop Group E after taking maximum points from their first two games. French side Toulouse are second on four points with Union and LASK Linz behind them.

Jurgen Klopp will be pleased to have seen all his players come through unscathed after Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota picked up suspensions at Tottenham and Cody Gakpo suffered an injury. Liverpool look to get back on track in the league after Saturday's acrimonious defeat with a trip to Brighton on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

I still can't get over the "offside" goal Diaz scored against Spurs. All things considered the Brighton match was a fair 2-2. VVD again with his lacklustre attitude gives away a goal. His careless body language has always been a big issue for me. Then from a corner Robbo lets it go when it was easier to kick the ball away to safety. Yes our penalty was that for sure yet at the time was wondering if the ref gave it as consolation for what happened versus Spurs. Had Jota and/or Gakpo been available we would have probably won this one.

Andrew Robertson: Scotland and Liverpool defender suffers shoulder injury
Scotland captain Andrew Robertson suffered a serious-looking shoulder injury during the Euro 2024 qualifying defeat by Spain.

The Liverpool left-back, 29, had to leave the pitch before the break in Seville with his arm cradled in his shirt after a challenge with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Robertson was replaced by Everton's Nathan Patterson.

The defender looked in discomfort as he left the pitch.

"We'll have a look and he'll go back to his club now," Scotland head coach Steve Clarke told Viaplay following the defeat in Seville.

"It always seems to happen when you lose one player in a position. We lose Kieran [Tierney] then Andy picks up a shoulder injury.

"We'll see how it is and how it settles down. Hopefully he's good for his club as soon as possible and ready to help us in November."

Scotland, who needed a draw in Seville to clinch qualification for Euro 2024, will qualify if Norway fail to win at home to Spain on Sunday.

Robertson looks likely to miss Scotland's next match against France in a friendly on Tuesday and could sit out Liverpool's derby with Everton on 21 October.

Mohamed Salah was the Merseyside derby match-winner with a second-half double as Liverpool defeated 10-man Everton in the Premier League.

Salah's confident penalty in front of the Kop End following Michael Keane's handball ended a frustrating 75 minutes for the home side and he added a late second as the Reds went top of the table on Saturday lunchtime.

It took the Egypt international's tally to 201 career league goals and victory maintained Liverpool's recent dominance over their neighbours in this fixture.

Jurgen Klopp's side searched for a way to break the deadlock in the second period after Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences, with both fouls coming on Luis Diaz.

The hosts had been finding it difficult to make in-roads despite having a man advantage, with many of their efforts from long range comfortable for Jordan Pickford to deal with.

The England international smothered Alexis Mac Allister's rasping effort and Darwin Nunez's strike, while dipping drives from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai both dropped narrowly over.

Everton maybe should have gone ahead in the opening couple of minutes but Dominic Calvert-Lewin could only divert his header straight at Alisson.

Dwight McNeil's curling effort was also deflected over the crossbar, but they were finally breached with 15 minutes to go and again in injury time, leaving Sean Dyche's side with only two wins in nine league games this season.

Salah secures the points

The two sides have had contrasting campaigns so far, with Liverpool looking to challenge for the title while Everton are languishing close to the relegation zone once more.

The 263rd Merseyside derby was a close affair but it was the Reds who came out on top once more, courtesy of star man Salah's thumping penalty and close-range finish in injury time.

The home supporters needed a lift and someone to stand up and provide the impetus for the result, and it was Salah who again provided it - although Liverpool may have had luck on their side.

The penalty was given after referee Craig Pawson came to the pitchside monitor and adjudged that Keane had handled the ball, while the official did not send Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate off following a foul on Everton forward Beto while already on a booking.

Reds boss Klopp reacted by immediately substituting Konte and bringing on Joel Matip as he successfully looked to hold on to a clean sheet.

Liverpool have a stranglehold on results in this fixture and have now lost just one in 28 meetings against the Blues, that solitary defeat coming at Anfield in February 2021.

But Liverpool's home form is formidable and it was always going be a big ask for a struggling Everton side to travel the short distance home with anything, as Klopp's side have lost just one of their last 45 matches on their own turf.

The German boss also surpassed former Liverpool and Everton boss Rafael Benitez as the manager with most derby wins in the Premier League with nine.

After Salah's opener, substitute Harvey Elliott forced Pickford into a fine save, tipping a vicious effort onto the crossbar, before Salah sealed victory in the 97th minute.

Will Everton feel hard done by?

It could have been a very different result had Calvert-Lewin's early chance gone in, and it turned out to be their only shot on target in the game.

But the gameplan had to change after Young's red card, with the former England international failing to keep his cool in the pressurised situation of a derby.

Already on a booking, the full-back lunged in on Diaz for a second mistimed challenge and was dismissed on 38 minutes, much to the anger of Dyche.

The Everton manager will also point to Reds defender Konate doing similar in the second period when the match was goalless.

Everton were unable to spring a surprise after coming into the game in buoyant mood on the back of a 3-0 win over Bournemouth, and they return the short distance home across Stanley Park empty handed.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has had an operation on the shoulder he injured while playing for Scotland, says Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

He was hurt in a challenge with Spain keeper Unai Simon during this month's Euro 2024 qualifying defeat and left the pitch cradling his arm in a shirt.

"He's had his surgery and it all went well, as good as it could be," Klopp told a news conference.

"We don't know how long it will take but the first step is done."

Robertson, who has played eight league games and scored one goal for Liverpool this season, was replaced by Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas for last weekend's Merseyside derby win against Everton.

Tsimikas, 27, has also started Europa League wins against LASK Linz and Union Saint-Gilloise as well as a EFL Cup third-round victory against Leicester City this season, and he was a late substitute in a league win against Bournemouth.

Klopp has previously said that defender Joe Gomez, who normally plays at centre-back or right-back, or 19-year-old Luke Chambers, could also play at left-back if needed.

Liverpool's players showed their support to absent team-mate Luis Diaz during a comfortable win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Diaz missed the match following reports his parents had been kidnapped in Colombia, with officials still searching for the winger's missing father after his mother was rescued.

Diogo Jota, surrounded by his team-mates, held up the Colombia winger's shirt after firing the Reds into a 31st-minute lead when Matt Turner turned Darwin Nunez's attempt into the Portuguese forward's path.

Liverpool were dominant and Uruguay striker Nunez doubled the advantage four minutes later with his sixth club goal of the campaign after a cutback by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Forest's miserable day was complete when Turner and substitute Harry Toffolo got in a tangle, allowing Mohamed Salah to become only the third player in the club's history to score in each of the opening five home league matches of a season.

Jurgen Klopp's side are three points behind leaders Tottenham, while Forest, who failed to seriously test Liverpool keeper Alisson, are 16th, five points above the relegation zone after a fourth defeat in six away games this season.

Luis Diaz: Major military and police search under way for Liverpool player's father

A major military and police search is under way in Colombia for the father of Liverpool player Luis Diaz, with the authorities offering a £40,000 reward for information leading to his rescue.

More than 120 soldiers, plus police, searched northern Colombia for Luis Manuel Diaz on Sunday, with reports armed men had taken him and his wife.

The player's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was found in Barrancas on Saturday.

Diaz was absent from the Liverpool side which beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

In a statement, the army said it had set up roadblocks and deployed two motorised platoons, unmanned aircraft, helicopters and a plane with radar in the search for his father.

The Colombian authorities have not provided details about the reported kidnapping, but local media said Diaz's mother and father were taken by armed men on motorcycles at a gas station in Barrancas, their home town, which is in La Guajira, the country's northern region .

Colombia President Gustavo Petro said "all the public forces have been deployed" to find Diaz's father.

Speaking on Sunday, the director of the National Police, General William Rene Salamanca, announced a reward of "up to 200m pesos" (about £40,000) for information.

Attorney General Francisco Barbosa said he had contacted Diaz twice to provide the 26-year-old with updates on the investigation.

Barbosa told the player that information has been obtained regarding the possibility that his father could be in Venezuela - a situation which, Barbosa said, would require intervention by President Petro.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dedicated Sunday's 3-0 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest to Diaz, saying they had won "for our brother".

Surrounded by his team-mates, Diogo Jota held up the Colombia player's number seven shirt after scoring Liverpool's first goal.

The club said before Sunday's game that they were "aware of an ongoing situation" involving the family of Diaz, adding the player's welfare "will continue to be our immediate priority".

Luis Diaz: Liverpool 'praying for good situation' in search for player's father

Liverpool are "praying for a good situation" as the search for Luis Diaz's kidnapped father continues in Colombia, says assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders.

Colombian authorities are searching for Luis Manuel Diaz after armed men abducted him and his wife.

Diaz's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was found in Barrancas on Saturday.

Forward Diaz was absent from the Liverpool side that beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Sunday.

"We have to try to support him as much as we can, a lot of things are out of our hands," said Lijnders.

"We hope the authorities can find his dad, we pray for that. As long as we do the right thing for him, he is one of us.

"He is an incredible player, everyone can see that. Then you see him in the building, he is the guy who always smiles. We really care about him.

"The team responded brilliantly by putting the shirt up, and the way the stadium reacted was a special moment. Our motto is You'll Never Walk Alone. So we just pray for a good situation."

The search for Diaz's father has moved to mountains in the north of Colombia.

Colombian police are offering a reward of about £40,000 for information regarding his whereabouts.

Liverpool face Bournemouth in the last 16 of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool: Darwin Nunez hits stunning winner to send Reds into quarter-finals

Darwin Nunez's stunning strike off the bench saw Liverpool through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals to face West Ham after a 2-1 win at Bournemouth.

The Reds took a first-half lead through Cody Gakpo's close-range strike, after Harvey Elliott's 20-yard effort was spilled by Ionut Radu.

The Cherries named a near full-strength side, with only three changes from Saturday's win over Burnley, but were not at their best until after the break, when they deservedly levelled through Justin Kluivert's header from a corner.

But they would only be level for six minutes, before Nunez cut in from the left and lifted a sumptuous effort over Radu and in for the winner.

Footballer Díaz's father 'kidnapped by rebels'

The Colombian government says that the father of Liverpool footballer Luis Díaz was kidnapped by left-wing rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN).

Luis Manuel Díaz was seized at gunpoint along with his wife on Saturday.

The player's mother was left behind in a car by the kidnappers as police closed in, but the gunmen dragged away his father.

Hundreds of police and soldiers have been deployed to free him.

Police had originally said that a criminal gang was most likely to blame.

But on Thursday, a government delegation which is currently engaged in peace talks with the rebel group, said that it had "official knowledge" that the kidnapping had been carried out by "a unit belonging to the ELN".

The ELN is Colombia's main remaining active guerrilla group. It has been fighting the state since 1964 and has an estimated 2,500 members.

It is most active in the border region with Venezuela where Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife Cilenis Marulanda live.

Luis Diaz returned to Liverpool's squad as a substitute for Sunday's Premier League match at Luton following his parents' kidnapping in Colombia.

Diaz, 26, had not featured in the Reds squad since their Europa League win over Toulouse on 26 October.

Luis Manuel Diaz and his wife were seized at gunpoint on October 28. Diaz's mother was found in Barrancas but his father remains missing.

"Negotiations are ongoing, but it is positive," said manager Jurgen Klopp.

"All the signs he gets as I understand it are very positive. That is why he wanted to be part of the team and he could come on as well.

"From that point of view I have no issue, but nobody can imagine how something like that feels. On the training ground he has been fine and that is why he is here."

Diaz resumed training at Liverpool on Wednesday. He was absent from the Liverpool side that beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 on October 29, during which team-mate Diogo Jota held up Diaz's number seven shirt after scoring his side's first goal.

The Colombia international was also absent for the EFL Cup last-16 win against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

The Colombian government said Diaz's father was kidnapped by left-wing rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN), sparking a major military and police search.

A representative of the group has reportedly said it will free Diaz's father in the coming days.

Luis Diaz: Kidnappers in Colombia warn release of Liverpool star's father could be delayed

The Colombian rebels allegedly behind the kidnapping of Liverpool star Luis Diaz's father have warned his planned release is at risk and could now be delayed.

Guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN) said on Thursday it intended to release Luis Manuel Diaz "as soon as possible" following his abduction on Saturday 28 October in the town of Barrancas, near Colombia's border with Venezuela.

But late on Sunday night, the rebels said the plans were in jeopardy due to the ongoing presence of government security forces in the region.

It comes after the Premier League star made his first appearance on a football pitch since the kidnapping, when he came on as a substitute to score a late equaliser in his side's 1-1 draw at Luton Town on Sunday evening.

After scoring, the winger lifted his shirt to reveal the message "libertad para papa" - meaning "freedom for my father".

But in a new statement, the ELN said it would now only release the Colombia international's father if government forces backed off from the region.

They said: "The area is still militarised, there are flyovers, deployment of troops, megaphone broadcasts, offers of rewards and an intense combing operation.

"If operations continue in the area, the release will be delayed and risks will increase."

@KingKhanWC perfromance vs mighty luton 🤭🤭 scrapping a point

Luton has the lowest possession rate in the PL. We knew they would have 10 men behind the ball at all times, with a back 5. We had the chances to win it, we always make great chances but the forwards were pretty poor in this game, along with their keeper being brilliant.

A point away to Luton would be a disaster in April/May or now if were are lagging behind. But 3rd with only 3 points behind City, the damage is not so bad. We have City away soon, this will show what level we really are on. I think top 4 is a certainty this season, we just have to ensure we stay close to the title condendors by April and anything can happen. I thought it would have been City and Arsenal but it seems it will be City and Spurs. :ROFLMAO:

Luis Diaz: Liverpool footballer's father freed say Colombian FA - two weeks after being kidnapped

The father of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz has been freed by his captors in Colombia according to the country's FA - almost two weeks after being kidnapped.

Luis Manuel Diaz was released by guerrillas from the National Liberation Army.

He had been abducted by armed men while driving in La Guajira.

The 26-year-old star's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was rescued within hours by police after roadblocks were set up.

His parents were abducted by armed men on motorcycles at a petrol station in the town of Barrancas, near Colombia's border with Venezuela on 28 October.

A controversial video assistant referee decision denied Liverpool a stoppage-time equaliser as they suffered a surprise Europa League loss to Toulouse.

Jarell Quansah's goal to make it 3-3 in the seventh minute of added time was ruled out after Alexis Mac Allister was judged to have handled the ball.

Quansah slammed in from close range to spark wild Liverpool celebrations and furious protestations from Toulouse before Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov was called to the VAR screen - having already appeared to point to the centre circle.

The ball had bounced off Mac Allister's chest into his upper arm much earlier in the move, which was ruled enough to disallow the goal.

Toulouse impressed for much of the match and went 2-0 up though strikes from Aron Donnum and Thijs Dallinga.

Liverpool pulled one back through a bizarre own goal from Cristian Casseres Jr, but Frank Magri restored the French side's two-goal advantage.

Substitute Diogo Jota then scored for Liverpool with two minutes of normal time left and they thought they had earned a point with virtually the final kick of the match, before VAR's intervention.

This match becomes the latest to feature VAR-related controversy in a turbulent week, although while Liverpool were denied a point, they had been well below their best.

Toulouse are 14th in Ligue 1 - just one point above the relegation play-off places - and had lost 5-1 at Anfield in the reverse fixture earlier in this group.

But after withstanding heavy pressure they took the lead on 36 minutes through a mistake by Kostas Tsimikas. The Greek left-back was robbed by Donnum, who strode forward into the area and found the back of the net with a shot that deflected off Quansah.

Toulouse top scorer Dallinga bagged the second just before the hour, slamming into the bottom corner following a fine team move.

The hosts were rocked when a defensive mix-up saw a high cross bounce off Casseres' back and into his own goal, after he turned his back on the ball expecting a team-mate to head it away.

But they hit back immediately, Magri slamming in from close range after Caoimhin Kelleher palmed out a low cross.

Jota's powerful low strike set up a grandstand finish, but Toulouse held on for a famous win - with help from the officials.

Having won their three previous Europa League games, Liverpool are still well placed to qualify from Group E and need just one more victory from their final two pool matches to at least reach February's play-off round.

Luis Díaz's father speaks for first time since kidnap

Luis Manuel Díaz, the father of Liverpool striker Luis Diaz, has spoken publicly for the first time since being freed by a Colombian guerrilla group.

Mr Díaz said he was made to walk "too much" with little sleep, while he was kept in a mountainous area.

"I would not want anyone to be in that mountain in the situation I was in," he told reporters in a tearful interview.

Mr Díaz was abducted on 28 October in his family's hometown of Barrancas in Colombia.

In a news conference on Friday, the 58-year-old said those days had been a "very difficult" time for him.

Colombian police say four people have been arrested for being "allegedly responsible for Luis Manuel Díaz's kidnapping", according to local media.

Police say that after a co-ordinated effort between Colombian and British authorities, a criminal group called "los primos" was dismantled.

Mr Díaz was held hostage until 9 November, when members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) handed him over to United Nations and Catholic Church officials.

Police had originally said that a criminal gang was most likely to blame for the kidnapping.

But a government delegation later said it had "official knowledge" that the kidnapping had been carried out by "a unit belonging to the ELN".

Liverpool plan to partially open the upper tier of their new Anfield Road stand when they face Manchester United on 17 December.

The club is conducting an £80m upgrade to lift capacity by 7,000 to 61,000.

Its opening was delayed until 2024 after Liverpool changed contractors to Rayner Rowen Group following Buckingham Group's fall into administration.

The Reds believe about half of the upper tier will be open for the United fixture, pending safety approval.

That would also be the case for games against West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle United later in December.

The Reds believe about half of the upper tier will be open for the United fixture, pending safety approval.

That would also be the case for games against West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle United later in December.

Manchester City host Liverpool on Saturday in a game that could shape the course of the Premier League title race - but Jurgen Klopp says it is not a test of how close the Reds have got to the champions.

City have won five of the past six titles with Liverpool clinching the other - the only two champions since Chelsea's 2017 triumph.

City's ex-Bayern Munich boss Guardiola and Liverpool's former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp have faced each other more than they have encountered any other manager - 28 times. Klopp has won 11, with Guardiola successful in 10.

"He made me better," said Guardiola of Klopp.

"Him and his teams, here and Dortmund, have always been big rivals. They are good games for both, positive approach and always attractive. He made me a better manager through his teams."

In two of the past three seasons, the Reds have been well off the title pace - but they are looking a proper threat again.

A Liverpool win over the current leaders, in the first Premier League match following the international break, would take them back to the top for the first time since May 2022.

"It is not a test [on] how close can we get to City, it is just a super exciting football game," said Klopp.

"But for us it is not about being excited, we have to prepare it properly and we know we have to be at our best to get a chance. Then it is about us to take it."

City have won their past 23 home games and one more would equal the record for consecutive wins by an English top-flight club, set by Sunderland between December 1890 and April 1892.

"Well, I know that the longer a run is going, the more likely it is that it ends," said Klopp.

Liverpool have won just one of their past 14 Premier League trips to City (D5 L8) - a 4-1 victory in Klopp's first visit to Etihad Stadium in November 2015.

They went down 4-1 at City last season when Mohamed Salah's early opener on April 1 proved to be a false dawn for the visitors.

"Saturday is a tough one, it's the strongest team in the world for the last few years," said Klopp. "Our record [at the Etihad] is not great you will tell me. They are extremely strong, nothing I can say makes them weaker, otherwise I would say it on repeat. Last year is just a memory."

So just how big is this game?

A new Liverpool?
Liverpool midfielders
Liverpool lost five midfielders in the summer and brought four new ones in
Liverpool were miles off City last term and failed to even qualify for this season's Champions League, finishing outside the top four for the first time in a full season under Klopp.

But in the summer Klopp launched a nearly unprecedented overhaul of a Premier League team's midfield.

Out went captain Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a combined £51m. In came Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch for about £145m.

Hungary captain Szoboszlai, signed from Leipzig, has been a big success so far.

He ranks in the top five in the Premier League for possession won (88), passes in the opposition half (434) and chances created (28).

Ex-Blackburn striker Chris Sutton said: "Liverpool have gone up a level in quality in the middle of the park with the players they have brought in. With the greatest respect to the Liverpool midfielders before, they were more runners."

Former England winger Andros Townsend, who plays for Luton, said: "It's completely different to two years ago, when they had the two number sixes in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who were the workhorses of the side.

"They didn't get forward as much and were prepared to sit back and wait for the counter-attack. Cut out balls and feed the attackers.

"Now, when the ball is with the defence, you have three midfielders who all have the quality to get on the ball and can turn and play forward. You don't have a minute's rest and have to be switched on for 90 minutes."

Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton agrees.

"They're more vibrant in that area of the field," Houghton told BBC Radio Merseyside. "The changes that the manager made were the right ones, to bring in younger, fresher players.

"Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have fitted in and Alexis will be even better when he pushes a bit further up the pitch."

But ex-City player Michael Brown sees a weakness.

"In past seasons you'd be worrying because Liverpool are winning all their games, they look powerful and are giving people the runaround regularly," Brown said.

"I don't think they're at that level this season. I've seen them and that midfield still concerns me slightly.

"There's so much change around and I don't think they've got that holding midfield player. I think City can easily capitalise on that because they can move them around."

The two most point scoring teams in the PL in the last 6 years face off again.

Klopp 12 wins against Pep with 11 loses.

Plus for LFC Salah, Nunez, Diaz all scoring in the Int break. The top 5 are all in good form but we need Salah to do something special again as he reguarly does in the big games.

This one is very difficult to predict , as different teams to yesteryear.

My prediction - 1-2

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports on how they can beat Manchester City: "A little bit of what Chelsea did when they were super aggressive and unpredictable.

"Everyone who pressed made the final step, these kinds of things. The respect they create, the threat they are, it holds you back from time to time because nobody wants to look silly.

"In the best games we ever played, we lost the most challenges. If we let them roll with it, then they are too good and it's really tricky.

"If you can interupt that rhthym then we can have our own moments. We will see, we are prepared as good we can be but the boys have to do it now."

Is this a test of whether Liverpool can challenge City for the title? "That depends really on the game. Of course we should play a good game today. Let's see.

"I will know more after the game. Of course it's a test in the sense of football in general."

Liverpool face ‘massive’ blow as boss Jurgen Klopp fears injuries for Alisson and Diogo Jota

Liverpool have been dealt a major blow with boss Jurgen Klopp confirming Alisson and Diogo Jota are set for a spell on the sidelines.

The pair both picked up knocks in the 1-1 draw away at Premier League champions Manchester City in Saturday's early kick-off.

Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson suffered a suspected hamstring injury in the closing stages as he hit the deck holding his leg following a goal kick, though he did manage to continue until the end.

Portuguese forward Jota had to come off in the second half, though, with what appeared to be a muscular problem.

And speaking to talkSPORT after the full-time whistle, Klopp has hinted they could be without the pair for quite some time.

He said of the pair: "It looks like we've lost Ali with a muscle problem and Diogo Jota.

"And that is massive. I don't know how many games coming up now [until Boxing Day], maybe 15 [ten].

"We have to get through this, we have to improve, we need to get more stable and in games like this, we should be more compact."

Liverpool travel to Austria next week to take on LASK in the Europa League, before Premier League clashes against Fulham, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace.

They then face Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium in Europe's second-tier competition, where they then host rivals Manchester United at Anfield on December 17.

Liverpool is not having a good time ahead if this injury scare becomes a reality.

A decent performance from Liverpool yesterday. Taking a point away from the Etihad is always a good result.

Hope it counts in the end or else these are just lame numbers that could not translate into another premiership. Winning the title should be paramount goal.

Alexander-Arnold may face disciplinary action for celebration

Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold could face disciplinary action after goading Manchester City fans on Saturday.

The Liverpool right-back, 25 rescued a point for the Reds at the Etihad with a superb late strike in the 80th minute and celebrated by putting his finger to his lips in front of the home supporters.

Afterwards, he admitted to winding up opposition fans, saying, "Seeing all of the faces is really funny."

Referee Chris Kavanagh took no action against Alexander-Arnold on the day for goading opposition fans, but the FA could still intervene.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and forward Diogo Jota face spells on the sidelines because of injury.

Both players were injured during Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Saturday.

Manager Jurgen Klopp says Alisson's injury is not as bad as first feared but he is still set to be out for about two weeks, while no timescale has yet been put on Jota's recovery.

"Both are out," said Klopp. "With Ali it's a bit lesser, so we have to see."

Portugal international Jota was forced off after 54 minutes at Etihad Stadium, while Alisson completed the game despite sustaining hamstring injury late on.

Liverpool have reached the last 16 of the Europa League as group winners with victory over LASK at Anfield.

Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo both struck in the space of three first-half minutes before Mohamed Salah's penalty after the break and Gakpo's second late on in a straightforward win.

Toulouse's failure to beat Union St-Gilloise ensures Liverpool cannot be caught at the top of Group E.

The Reds go through to the knockouts and avoid February's play-off round.

Northern Ireland's Conor Bradley has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool.

The 20-year-old has agreed fresh terms with the Premier League club after making his first appearance of the season in Thursday's Europa League Group E win over LASK at Anfield.

Full-back Bradley joined Liverpool in 2019 from boyhood club Dungannon Swifts.

He has been capped 13 times by Northern Ireland.

Bradley made his Liverpool debut in September 2021 and has made six competitive appearances in total for Jurgen Klopp's side.

He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Bolton, scoring seven goals in 53 games and picking up the club's Young Player, Players' Player and Player of the Season awards.

Bradley replaced Ryan Gravenberch in the closing stages of Liverpool's win over LASK having recovered from the back injury that has kept him out of Northern Ireland's last six matches.

Liverpool drop interest in PSG's Mbappé

Real Madrid's ongoing pursuit of Paris Saint Germain striker Kylian Mbappé has been boosted by the news that Liverpool will not be pushing to sign him next summer or before, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Mbappé, 24, has so far snubbed a new deal in the French capital, with his existing contract coming to an end in summer 2024, and it looks to be a matter of when, and not if, he decides on his next destination.

Real Madrid have made no secret of their plans to add the France international to their attacking options, though they're reported to have ended their pursuit in recent weeks as a result of his huge wage demands.

Other clubs are interested, with Chelsea and Arsenal monitoring the situation, but Madrid remains his most likely option if he does departs.

A mammoth victory for Liverpool. Would be a morale boosting for them. Precious 3 points added to their tally. Fulham really give them a run for their money.

Have to say there isn't another team in the league that has the resilience of Liverpool

So many games this season where they have came out the other side as winners or getting a point when it looked difficult
