Ravichandran Ashwin makes fixing jibe at Herschelle Gibbs on Twitter, confirms it was a joke [#18]

Gibbs should have just replied with the words Kuldeep and Chahal :)). This HTB Ashwin more often than not acts way too smart for his own good.

but CSK was banned and there was sth related to matchfixing. thats the general media perception

actually having looked at the prior tweets it seemed Ashwin got annoyed too early and didnt take a joke

Gibbs is clearly joking whereas Ashwin got personal

CSK were never banned, CSK team had nothing to do with any fixing, the whole ban was due to illegal betting from srini's son in law. CSK was not even the party that was punished. It was the owners that were thus leading to the indirect ban on team.

Don't make allegations or get your facts right.

No. Csk was banned because the team ceo was involved in betting which is illegal in India.
 
Ashwin is flat footed if i am right. May be he got riled up. Also Ashwin's response would make him look iike snowflake. Both jokes are in poor taste. For what its worth i would have responded "I never had to run faster to become the fastest to get to 300 test wickets Why now" . He is too bright for his own good lol
 
Pretty cheap from Ashwin. Joke or whatever he should respect individuals.

Is he really flat footed? If Gibbs targeted that it was a pretty cheap comment from him as well

When he was new to the internationals it was said he was flat footed. Not sure if the source was verifiable. But he has some trouble running faster. Cricket is a forgiving sports. So many guys like Ranatunga who would barely walk for singles. Courtney walsh could never throw the ball from deep. HE would bowl from the deep.Cricket has seen many many slow movers for different reasons. These guys should think twice about such stuff before posting. Remember Potato incident of Inzamam. You never know how people will react as we never know how personal it is for them.

^Agree but this comeback is very bad, It makes him look like a child. All in all, this conversation is childish from both sides.
 
This happens to all of us on social media like Whatsapp, facebook, twitter even in forums where bad comebacks will be ridiculed. But nobody knows us. We can get away. Guys like Ashwin should think twice before posting. He has no reputation like Sehwag who can get away with "he is just speaking his mind he has always been like that". He has a reputation of being an above average intelligent cricketer. He is very good at articulating anything he wants to say. Tweets there are many categoris.Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest tweets.. Then Trump Tweets which is beyond the Dumbest level.

Ashwin should have made fun of Gibbs bald head. Making jokes about fixing is a low blow.

First of all he was part of CSK team.

Its a trigger subject for many people. He will not get a lot of sympathy here.

He should have taken the joke as it was meant to be, an attempt at fat shaming at a soft target.
 
Could have replied with Gibbs being bald or South Africa's inability to ever win anything.

If he had played victim card gibbs would have been roasted. Now his own Indian supporters troll Ashwin which is kind of sad though. He didn't kill anybody. At best a bad joke. The way Indian fans over-react is worse than ashwin's over-reaction.

If Dhoni had said the same thing everyone would be lining up to support Dhoni lol. See it is all perspective. Ashwin doesn't have a huge fan base as such. Sure they like him when he does well.
 
That was a really poor tweet by Ashwin. Noway did I perceive that as being a joke either.

Not accusing Ashwin of fixing but his team's owner was betting illegally.

And I said his social IQ was low cause he thinks what he said was joke and not an outright low level insult.

Jokes are usually one liners like Gibb's. Ashwin clearly got mad and felt the need to type like a paragraph to give it back to Gibbs.

I think most players would have taken it in self deprecating manner or just played along and engaged in similar light hearted banter. And at best a one liner not the whole story

What makes it worse is that Ashwin is writing paragraphs justifying it and dug the hole deeper.

He always came across as one of the more intelligent cricketers and clearly makes an attempt to come across as sophisticated and educated so I'm surprised myself he lost it so easily here. Maybe was having a bad day anyway and this was tipping point

I think calling him a slow mover hurt his pride a big time. If you call 100 fat people, hey fattie, Not all 100 will react the same way. Some will snap. Some will play along. This is the problem with posting anything on the social media. You just have to think about consequences. But Gibbs should also realize not everyone necessarily should take his jokes in the right spirit. So he should be careful enough to add something like j/k at the end so that his jokes don't offend over-sensitive people.

The way Chahal and Kuldeep are performing I think it will very difficult for ashwin to make a comeback. Learning to bowl leg spin shouldn't be his target because those two are doing well. There are still two positions in Indian team where he can play. He should either become a wicket keeper in ODI's or learn to bowl fast and take Pandya's place in the side.
 
Inappropriate comments from Ashwin. Doesn't seem like he took Gibbs joke well. He is claiming that it was a joke but doesn't seem like a joke to me. Poor from Ashwin.

For someone who did what Gibbs did and then portrayed immaturity, innocence Gibbs does talk a lot of crap about other cricketers. The South African team disowned him and wanted nothing to do with him which tells you everything you need to know. Gibbs was very lucky he got a one year sentence because the likes of Sharjeel and Khalid Latif have received 5 years for the same offence.

And i don't believe for a second that Gibbs didn't know what was going on when Cronje spoke to him about fixing games. I believe Cronje was pressurized to take the flak for everything and to let others of the hook.

Its a shame that match fixers and unethical players are found in commentary boxes and TV studios these days when they should be completely boycotted by every one related to the game - fellow players, fans, etc.

Ashwin is not the brightest bulb. Just last year he compared CSK hiatus with Man United plane crash in 1958.
 
This is surprising as Ashwin normally comes across as a good natured bloke, but this clearly hit a nerve for Ashwin, he must deep down realise waht his fitne levels are like and must be a bit of a sore point otherwise he wouldnt have lashed out like that.

I'm not exactly an expert on the topic but how is Gibbs a proven cheat?

From what I've read, he agreed to score <20 in an innings for $15k(?) but then went and blasted 70-odd.

Definitely not on the same level as someone like Cronje, anyway.

I clearly remember that series and watched most of the games. The game in question where Gibbs scored 70 odd, he was dropped 2-3 times. He tried his best to get out but the Indians were poor in the field. He just got lucky as none of the catches was taken.
 
Poor from Ashwin though, that was an unnecessary comment. He should have like other posters said just retorted in jest. The problem with social media is that once you post anything, you can never take it back. People have to be careful when they post such things.
