What's new

Saudi Arabia (418 off 50 overs) defeat China (28 off 12.4) by 390 runs in ICC World Cricket League

They are ahead of us only in athletics or random Olympic sports not many care about. Are they really that far ahead of us in sports that are really popular. Despite having all the resources and interest in Football, they are ranked 81, just 20 places above poor India that hardly knows any sport except Cricket.

Same is the case with field hockey, where they are still minnows. Talk Tennis, and their talent pool stands nowhere near India.
Let's forget Olympics for a second and start thinking of popular sports. Are they Top 10 in any? If not, why do you think they will be any better in Cricket?

Olympic sports are a huge deal and very prestigious! The only sport which really dwarves everything else in terms of popularity is dah footy! Xiong Chaozhong is also a world champion in Boxing, both India and Pak have failed to produce one; there's Vijender who has potential but age is not on his side, turned pro too late but Muhammad Waseem could win a world title in the near future but has not done so at this moment

Disgusting attitude from Pakistanis and Indians. China is a new nation to the sport and they are developing it from the grass roots. They could have easily had some desis make up their team (remember many are going to China now to study), but they decided to have an indigenous team as this is how the sport will develop.

And desis are in no position to question China's sporting prowess. Dragon wipes the floor with them in 99% of world sports. China wins more medals in one year at the Olympics than India and Pakistan have done in their entire history.

Good post, not just Pakistanis/Indians but even Donal Cozzie ! I expected support from the Irish with them being you know peasants in cricket and all :yk

I do support them, where have I not??

Actually Olympic sports are a big deal and it puts China on the world sporting map. I don't know what the situation is right now, but last time I checked 8 off the top ten ranked players in Table Tennis were Chinese. The other two were from US and Sweden and guess what those were also of Chinese descent. LMAO.

India does not have that kind of dominance in any world sport.

They only started taking interest in football quite recently and have developed a very good league in which even big name players are participating. In 10 years or so they will be a very competitive side.

As for field hockey, India and Pakistan have been playing the sport for decades and it is the national sport in both countries but China has made remarkable progress in the sport from absolute scratch and now they regularly qualify for world events. It won't be long before they start beating some of the big boys.

Recently? It has been 13 years since Chinese Super League, and yet they are only ranked world number 81 today? They have money, they have population, they are spending a lot.. so what is holding them back? Here's the funny thing, they were ranked world #54 when their league started in 2004, but are #81 today. In 2014, their ranking actually matched India's current ranking. So what progress are you talking about?

Don't get me wrong, I have mad respect for Chinese when it comes to athletics or Olympics.. but I don't see them being really good at any team sport. They have always been bad at it.. even worse than we are.

tbf China did qualify for a football WC in 2002 or the late 90's if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, and then they poured in a lot of money, got 1.4 billion people interested in football, have crazy following for their local clubs.. and yet their football has only gotten worse. Just imagine Indian football team catching up with them, that's how bad they have been.

If China can make football popular it will make cricket popular in time. Huge investors within the country and where there's sports, there's money. Wouldn't be surprised if China would be a minnow within 10 years

Haven't you heard? its for the betterment of the sport to spread the game as much as possible. BCCI being the richest board, should pay for that.

It seems to me that you are just commenting for the sake of commenting without any proper argument for a discussion. BCCI being rich/powerful has nothing to do with these Chinese boys VS S.Arab. There is a time and place for everything, sadly your BCCI argument has no value here. Perhaps try it on another thread with relevant topic.

LOL..what are you talking about? They are much ahead in most games..table tennis, badminton, gymnastics..They had a 110 m hurdle champion earlier..They are coming up even in swimming..and also strong in basketball (after US)...what do you mean by few sports? They are also moving ahead in football..maybe not immediately..but check after 10-15 years

They have had a womens champion in Grand Slam tennis..what has Sania Mirza done other than doubles?

Let me know when was the last time any SC country accomplished something meaningful on the biggest sporting stage on the globe.

how exactly does being good at olympic events translate into mastering a new team sport?

Has there men's team won a medal in any team sport? they have some sucess in volleyball, but hey have been playing it for a long time.

Doesn't sound logical and sounds more like a infatuation with china's prowess.

You aren't answering my question.. why have India and Pakistan failed so embarrassingly at Olympics while china has been the true superpower ?

huh? you didn't ask a question. you implied that China's Olympic sport will automatically make them a success at soccer. I'm saying that is BS.

Its on you to show that they have picked a new team sport and achieved significant success at world stage.

Leave alone china, show me any country in the world that has picked up a new team sport and achieved big time success.

Closest is USA and soccer. not much to write home about.

Olympic has multiple categories and when team wins the multiple medals that means they have coaching system in place to consistently produce quality athelets. If they can produce Olympic winners I have little doubt they can form a formidable cricket team in matter of few years by coaching 11 guys if they truly commit themselves like they did with Olympic

India and Pakistan both have cricket as their only sport and they still haven't won test series in some countries. So Olympic isn't the only place where they have humiliated themselves. Not a successful "teams" IMO

Any pretty convenient to brush aside their wins in Volleyball because they have been playing for a while :))

Typical straw-man

The golds in volley ball are all by women where they have long traidion going back to lang ping.

There men's team? not so much.

So you don't have any examples of countries adopting new team sports and achieving success?

here is information on olympic volleyball

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volleyball_at_the_Olympics

and here is the money quote

"Gold medals are less evenly distributed in women's volleyball than in men's; the fourteen editions of the Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament were won by only five different countries: Brazil, Cuba, China, Japan and the former Soviet Union.

how is any of that related to china mastering cricket? sounds like you are running away becos you realized you don't have anything to back up your cliam.

Argentina won the gold medal in basketball in summer 2004 (category dominated exclusively by USA). The same country finished 3rd in 2007 rugby WC and 4th in 2015 WC.

And they are just as obsessed with soccer as SC countries are with cricket

Olympics are men and women atheletes combined. Who wins more medals is irrelevant at that stage

They have been a basketball nation forever. The first FIBA world championship was hosted in Argentina.

As far a rugby goes they have playing since the 19th century.

Hardly random. U implied a country would pick up new sport and master it to reach world class level quickly.

all available information suggests otherwise. including your link about india and football in the 1800s.

You aren't making any sense
