Teams:

South Africa (From): Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis(c), Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock(w), Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel, Lungisani Ngidi, Willem Mulder, Temba Bavuma, Heinrich Klaasen

Australia (From): Cameron Bancroft, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith(c), Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine(w), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Peter Handscomb, Jon Holland, Jhye Richardson, Chadd Sayers

To start soon but the real match to watch will be Warner vs SA !

:warner vs de Cock incident spiced-up otherwise dull series.

Hoping for cracking contest in this Test :19:

Australia would be elated with these first 10 overs, as they'd be well chuffed if they go into lunch no more than 1 down. South Africa, to be honest, haven't bowled all that badly.

Warner's been impeccable today, an old school test match opener's innings on a damp surface, atypical of the conventional tracks in SA and Australia. Bancroft has been good too.

Well documented that AUS pitches are flat tracks .... SA conditions are similar to AUS (CSA prepares sportive tracks only for sub-continental teams) !

No. It is not flat for non SC teams in SA. Conditions weren't easy today. Just look at Philander "Green track bully" spells.

Nope, try harder. Conditions were not at all easy this morning. Credit to the Australians for sticking it out.

Comparatively flat ... Compare the pitches dished out to India with current series !

Elgar was almost crying to face Indian bowlers in 3rd Test :ashwin

Generally CSA provide better pitches to AUS (fearing pace attack) than the one Ind, Pak, BD and SL get in SA.

Agree today's pitch is harder also weather is conducive for bowlers.

I made my statement on overall historical behaviour of pitches to AUS and sub-continental teams prepared by CSA.

This is a fact, many SA captains including Faf publicly accepted this, nothing wrong in it.. HOME Advantage.

Only concern is, not to whine when faced with spinning tracks in sub-continent :faf

SA-Aus have had a lot of low scoring games in the past.

That was done to take the revenge of previous series i.e. when SA toured India.

Didn't went quite well 'Revenge Business' ...

Lost one test, could have lost series as well thanks to Ind's poor selection and under preparation.

Khawaja is the best AUS got for No. 3, this guy is too inconsistent for the role ..big shoes :rp to fill though !

Yes, it didnt went well. Anyways, both teams produced absolutely bowling friendly conditions. So, it is 1-1. Think that chapter can be closed now.

There is something in it for the bowlers here. Graeme Smith says it will flatten out as day progresses.

Philander making the ball talk whenever there is something for him!

Yea done ... But India won 1 test in SA; last tour SA got blanked in Ind, avoided whitewash due to rain in Bangalore test (PS: I was at stadium to see whole second day rain ...it was 100th test of AB)! This humiliation in India resulted in poor pitches for recent tour !

Kuwaaja is quite mediocre away from home, certified home track bully.

It is true that India won with a much one-sided affair than what SA won. However, you must be aware that this SA side is a depleted one with most of their batsmen on verge of retirement while this was India's best chance to win the series. I am sure in the inside, you would have expected better results from India in the test series.

When SA had the best team with most of their players at peak, they were much better than India away from home although slighly inferior at home.

SA was good test side, IND is good test side now :kohli2
ICC rankings confirm this...

Agree on squandering golden chance to win test series in SA, thanks to coach :ravi , wish we had Kumble instead

I think India has good chance to win a series in England, although, they need to make things go right for them which didnt happened in SA in first two tests.

India has won test series in Eng more than once before...

Only thing to look forward in coming Eng tour is how King Kohli :kohli2 performance this time around #JustMyOpinion

Winning test series in SA and AUS will be ultimate challenge for all sub-continental teams :19:

As long sa they don't gift wickets to Moeen Ali they should be good. Last time everyone played like idiot trying to take him apart. He turned out one of the highest wicket taker for England

World no.1 test bowler vs world no.1 test batsman. Interesting contest ended. Although he looks off color? 25 in 55 balls?

It doesn't really matter how Kohli will perform. He will do well IMO and is already a great in tests as well. At the end, it is team's performance that will decide.

Ofcourse, in this forum many will start nitpicking his stature if he performs under par.

His antics aside , KG is the most exciting young pacer in the world.

5 wickets this session. Time to all out AUS under 275. Edit!

A truly fabulous session of Test cricket!

And here is a picture which sums up the day. Seated in white in the crowd on the left of the photo is a certain Merv Hughes. And on the right, in the opposite stand, you can see the horn belonging to the marvellous brass band.

It’s been an ambition for years for me to attend a Test at PE and hear the band. And it is a magical experience!

I am not saying this is the start. He is still in raging form. But that dismissal smith is what people predicted. He typically would connect such balls miraculously because of his incredible hand-eye coordination. When that diminishes that is what going to hurt SMith the more. He will think about walking across like that.

Ball is swinging a lot. They have to tackle Starc and Hazlwood.

It rained most of the night and until an hour before play began. It has been cloudy all day - swing bowling conditions.

It’s around 20 degrees, compared with around 30 at Durban. It’s cool and cloudy as opposed to steamy and warm at Durban.

Nice! Glad you're enjoying your stay. Weekend should, hopefully, bring in more of a crowd.

Seriously?

India’s Fake Ranking is due to a glut of Home series in the last two years.

They have lost their most recent Test series in:

Australia
England
New Zealand
South Africa.

And they lost their recent Test series in South Africa in just EIGHT DAYS!

In real helpful conditions Australia is a terrible side. Even Micahel Clarke never had much of an answer in helpful conditions. SA has proved it time and again. As i say Rabada got another one. on a hatrick. This is called running through a side.

Actually Australia is on par with Bangladesh in real testing, swinging conditions. Current side.

I see no crowd. What happened ? There was a full house when Ind played a odi here.

That's a heartbreaking picture, to be honest. As you state, it has been an absolutely enthralling day of cricket but those empty chairs tell me that modern society is long past any hope of redemption. There's no accounting for taste, I guess. I remember PE usually used to get good crowds on Fridays.

Society is ruined because not everyone has the same taste in sports as you. And everyone who likes something else has bad taste. Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds?

No, society is screwed. You just have to analyze events around the world to see what's happening is simply appalling. The fact people can't appreciate test cricket is a trivial tragedy in comparison, but I have every right to express my displeasure at the state of humanity.

And these sides put together won exactly ONE test match in India. India won more away and therefore is No.1

South Africa hosts ten home Tests this season, and Friday is a working and school day here.

Plus I took the picture in the tea break, and is a day match.

The ground only holds around 10,000 seats I reckon. It’s a bit like NZ playing at Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton and the Basin in Wellington. Small boutique grounds in Made For TV fixtures.

India's match was on a Tuesday . You need to realize and accept the crowd pulling abilities of Indian cricket no matter where they play.

India played their Tests at Cape Town, Centurion and Johannesburg. They didn’t play a Test here.

Port Elizabeth is a much smaller and poorer city. (According to today’s newspaper, unemployment is 84% and HIV prevalence is 28%). There is much less of a sense of danger than there was at Durban (where I got chased down the street one block from the ground) but central PE - where the ground is - is visibly poor.

I think on a Friday in PE either you are working or you can’t afford $12 for a cricket ticket.

Mindless cricket from Maharaj saving a boundary off the last ball of the over which allows Paine to retain the strike as he ran three. I shudder to imagine what would have happened to Maharaj had Imran Khan or Wasim Akram been the captain in this situation.
