I just thought about this. Even if Pakistan set Sri Lanka 300 to win there are too many overs left in the Test, hence Pakistan must look to occupy the crease for as long as possible. Run-making is not the priority now. They will come with time. Stay at the crease.

Pakistan must bat until lunch tomorrow.

The match will be un-winnable by the Sri Lankans by then

Have to remember that unless we are looking to draw the series in the last test, Pakistan have to do the running here.

THEY need to get enough runs on the board AND leave themselves enough time to bowl SL out, should they go into an ultra defensive mode.

THEY need to balance this with some fallback should things start to go out of control.

Very interesting times ahead

There seems to be quite a bit of time left but rain is also one the cards so not sure if we get full 5 days

So far the weather hasn't played any role. However one must realize that its Srilanka and the heavens can open any time. So Pakistan needs to set a target quickly and then ask the SriLankans to chase it. A target of around 350 would be realistic, and it will also push the Srilankans to go for the chase.

I wonder if Alam will be told he is only 6 runs off the record for most runs by a debutant in the lunch break if he doesn't already know. He batted so well when he neared his century yesterday that I suspect he might go for a quick hit to get those 6 runs.

What a comeback from us. You can never count Pakistan out of anything :)

If we bat till the fourth day lunch, the pitch should start playing tricks and we can then use it to our advantage in bowling SL out. I'd like to see Malik bowling some overs, but YK seems to prefer bowling himself ahead of Malik

Your right ... the forecast for the next 3 days is scattered thunderstorms. But lets get that 300 lead first. This match is set up perfectly for someone like Akmal to come in and hit some quickfire runs later.

sri lanka chased 352 to win against SA on this ground three years ago.

If we can avoid it - Pakistan will not declare until past lunch time tomorrow - long way to go

I don't think the pitch will do much even on day 5.

And the history is on this ground even 350 is chase-able.

In any case, bat till tomorrow lunch or even tea.

these two need to give us a decent partnership

I think this pitch can be better judged by the 4th day. Normally test wickets, even the more helpful ones, are good for batting on the 2nd and 3rd days of play. From what we have seen, and Waqar also noted, this pitch is slightly different from the ones where SL chased 352, we almost chased over 300 v Australia etc etc.

We need to bat out the full day, no doubts about that. If we get shot out today, that leaves with a lead around 260-280 which won't be much but will definitely give the bowlers a lot to bowl at. I just cannot believe we are in this position after the disaster in the first innings, only with Pakistan can this happen!

only 5 maiden overs in 81 overs of this innings so far.....that is positive attitude....well done Pakistan :14: ......keep it up!

need to survive the new ball...its very important since new ball can do some tricks and our middle order batsmen apart from probably yousuf are pretty horrible against it...
So its very important...Pakistan is hardly out of the woods yet

yep

it's good we have Yousuf at the crease...if it was Malik or Misbah I would've been really nervous about it

Malik has also proved to be a good opening batsman as well. here is the link containing the record of malik as an oppener(new ball player). So let us hope and pray for the best.

Looks like Pakistan has some more consolidation to do.

Yousuf is really Herath's bunny. He has fallen to him each time now ... come on sort it out Moyo. Pressure is back on Alam once again ... we've wasted a good opportunity and are now effectively 3/144.

MiniInzy needs to shepherd Fawad to his double ton

How has this pitch gone from a batting paradise to a minefield in the space of 5 overs???

pakistan is probably relaxing but they should understand that this is a very important time
i hope these 2 can stay on the crease

Spinners bowling with the new ball is odd. But they are bowling well, I wonder how long Sanga will continue with these two.

Kulasekara on ... hopefully is easier to play the quicks and make some quick runs.

Need to see off the new ball and then push on.

Pakistan's tail hasn't really been that threatening, thus it's up to the next few pairs to really get a big score in.

Herath isnt a fast bowler! But I see your point.

Next goal is tea.

No more wickets till tea.

Misbah khuda ke liye.

New ball still only 4 overs old ... these two must get through at least the next 6-7 overs without giving chances.

Fawad needs to be this guy:

From cricinfo, it appears there have been 5 edges since the new ball was taken 5 overs ago. Are they really playing that badly?

Salman Anis from Pakistan: "Its time for Misbah to show his worth in this batting line up. After his heroics in the T-20 World Cup, he hasnt shown any sort of form in either ODIS or Tests or even Twenty20. His place should be under threat as Malik is proving his point but he has been in poor touch. There are many youngsters ready to pounce on any opportunity. (Not Faisal Iqbal I hope though)"

Looks like Faisal Iqbal has no fans at all.

Misbah Gone.... this should be his last innings for Pakistan..... enough is enough he should not be included in Pakistan team anymore....

We've lost the last 3 wickets for 18 runs, and all senior batsmen - Younis, Yousuf and Misbah ... Very poor batting!
