The Wrestling Discussion Thread

I have never regarded Cody as a great creative mind because I have seen some of his genius ideas in action in AEW, where he had full creative control most of the time. But then again, he isn't supposed to be a creative genius. He is a wrestler - his job is to go out there and cut good promos that make people interested in seeing him defend his belt. It's the booker's job to come up with compelling feuds for the top guy. Roman was lucky because he had Paul Heyman by his side, who is a creative genius. And I personally believe that Heyman is the glue that made Bloodline storyline stick; both on-screen and off-screen. Roman also had Vince booking for a large portion of that run, and even a senile old Vince had more instincts in his pinky than Triple H does in his entire body. Roman is not perfect either, he has his flaws as a wrestler and an on-screen personality, but he had the right people with him, and everything came together perfectly to give us that GOAT run. Cody is not so lucky.
I think Roman isn't given enough credit for his input. Before Sami was included in the bloodline, it had started to get stale and it was Roman who specifically asked for him to be included. And Roman elevated so many guys. He is not a perfect wrestler but he is definitely a level above Cody IMO.
Cody is good. The booking is awful.

I didn't but I'll deffo check it out. I follow his stuff, even if it's just clips of his promos on YouTube. Yeah, there are alot of parallels between Ricky and early Rock. Right around the time joined the Nation of Domination
The difference is Ricky is 35 atm, while Dwayne had left prowrestling at 32. He had an incredible quick rise and peak. A wrestlemania main eventer at 26 years.
Of the current batch, only Okada has been the one to have hit his peak in his 20s

The unscripted version of Rock from his prime was something else, that Rock would have tore him a new one. I was watching some old footage of his evolution from the Nation to Corporate champion, man so much aura. Only pretty Ricky comes close to that kind of slick IT factor, did you listen to his promo this week? enjoy him in NXT while you can……
That’s why part of me wishes Rock fully retired after 2011-13

That was the last time he had that similar level of no bs no filter aura of his prime. Final boss was cool too but outside of the ring he’s become so PG And politically correct after going deep into Hollywood that he sounds like a shadow of his former self.

In any case, still good on him to put that munafiq / murtad / convicted trafficker Andrew Tatti in his place

Man you guys should listen to the Shawn Michaels interview with that Canadian podcaster, nobody has extracted so much insight from the mind of a personified great quiet like this, I got goosebumps listening to it.

Key bits:

- For Shawn, the two most critical elements for a pro-wrestler are timing & feel.
- He was not afraid to latch onto his peer’s from the territory era.
- He gives a very detailed insight into his mind & psyche when it came to preparing for Wrestlemania - It was like listening to an old Mile Tyson interview and how he’d prepare for fights,.
- He had natural ability but worked really hard and putting in the work never bothered him.
- Wasn’t making excuses but part of what he was like in the 90’s was deep insecurity, he doesn’t mention it explicitly and is too humble / you can tell he doesn’t feel in his comfort zone talking like this, but I think Shawn was obsessed with being the greatest ever & constantly compared himself to other big names at the time.
- If he appreciated that he was better than 99% of guys when it came to what he did, it would have been more healthy - But you don’t get 2000’s Shawn without all the stuff he went through in the 90’s.

I’ve not finished this yet but it’s one of the best interviews anyone has done with Shawn, truly is the greatest ever!

Alexa should go over Tiffy for the title, & remain tag champ with Flair. Sow the seeds of tension between them once Alexa wins the title & tease a Flair turn, but this time, it’s Alexa who fires the first shot; book the programme for WM with a long term build, styles make fights & they already have decent chemistry.

They need a big angle for Vasquer, if the goal is Liv to win the RR & challenge, Vasquer needs to be built up better.

What’s the point of bringing in a big name like Nikki & having her job to Perez ? She’s finding her feet yeah & the match this week was great, but couldn’t they find someone else…..They didn’t bother to protect her either, Rodriguez was ring side but it felt like a clean win to me - A punishment trend for anyone who’s vocal backstage against H - where Vince would look for a bit of edge in his rosters and use his leadership to get more out of them, this dumpster punishes stars due to his dented ego

Everyone was so worried when AJ came to the WWE, how Vince is petty etc will want to bury the other company blah blah, and he has his habits but when he sees special talent and/or £££, he’s going to do what’s best for business and support your true worth / and even better if you’re willing to fight for it or show that you have that desire in you.

Little did we know it would be the fragile ego of 4/10 who would book AJ in line with all the fears people had when he first joined the WWE.

I watched Bron vs LA this week to & my god what a match & credit to Bron to but how good is LA man? He’s the complete package, does everything so well, such a creative wrestler, in the WWE set-up he has gotten so over & adjusted his ring work and personality so well to stand out at the highest level, he’s a ready made World Champion right out the box and we have to watch him get shafted week after week & his attitude / desire for that level is again keeping him in the dog house and now Bron’s arrived and he needs to be champ to - What an absolute sh!t show, LA should have been an established main-eventer by now…..

The main-event was very good to, all round it was a much better wrestling show, I bet H took a hike this week….

It’s pretty freakish to me that Natalya has mentioned this, because over the past few weeks, watching Dragunov, his intensity reminds me of Benoit; obviously Benoit was next level but he’s seriously on edge in the ring & he is good at evoking that through his ring work and comes across as unhinged on the mic as well, body language & general presence help there to.

Great shout. This guy is nuts. Clearly someone who thrives on pain and pushing himself to his physical limit. As a babyface he has amazing potential because few can sell like him or take a beating like he does. And in Gunther I feel like he has that forever adversary. Both of them are such perfect opponents, who bring the best out of each other that the story tells itself. I hope we see Gunther v Dragunov at WrestleMania soon.

Thought the main-event was a surprisingly good match. Charlotte and Alexa make a good tag team. But more than anything, this match made me want to see Charlotte v Bayley.

I dunno about you but I feel like they are crowding the women's world title scene with too many newcomers. Nothing against Vaquer who I love. But I think she needs to be in programmes with bigger female stars so they can elevate her. Beating someone on the same level as you doesn't really elevate you. Tiffany has all the tools to be a future star but he in-ring work is clunky at best, and putting her with someone just as inexperienced and clunky in the ring as Jade doesn't help anyone. Put some star-power in the main-event scene. You have Charlotte, Bayley, Rhea, Iyo, Becky Lynch...there are so many big female stars on the roster. It doesn't always have to be Nia 'Refrigerator' Jax.

AJ by just tinkering a thing or two here and there can mesh into any wrestling style in the world and get over. He's just that good. And Vince directly booked him in a feud with Y2J, the best exponent WWE style wrestling around that time. I loved all 4 matches between them.

Unless it’s Seth H will rarely push someone at the top with full intent, somebody mentioner Damien Priest; and I don’t blame ya”ll for looking at him like he’s a bum, because that’s how he was booked as champion, he has serious upside but it’s rarely exploited in any meaningful way. With Seth out the picture, unless Punk holds the title (because he can really mask the booking flaws and pettiness), the WHC risks becoming another bone H gets to throw at people and the way it is presented will not be too indifferent to your comments on what they’re doing with Stephanie who by comparison got a rocket strapped to her back in NXT, double champ, headlining MSG theatre, going viral etc Shawn needs to replace Triple GPT asap

I think we’ve seen enough of him to make this statement, but in my opinion, Nick Aldis’s portrayal of an on-screen GM is the best there has ever been on RAW or SD; it’s bitter sweet because I’ve been desperate to see him in an active ring role & I don’t know what his thoughts are on that, and at his age he needs to be working every week to stay sharp or you decline faster. He was excellent in the main-event segment last night, every week really but more layers of depth due to his relationship with Cody.

I know who’s going over but what a huge improvement over the feud with Seth, Drew single handedly is making me want to see the title match, Cody’s not a clean-cut face either and needs such opponents to show more edge, Drew on the other hand is so good at pushing all the right heel buttons to make this a deeply personal affair; we’ve managed to recover some momentum for him and putting the belt on Drew, absolutely does not hurt Cody, this is how you establish the very top tier stars and Drew has shown time & time again, that he has everything to be a top guy as a good or bad guy.

Tbh, I love both Aldis and Adam Pearce and I enjoy how different their management of their shows is. On one hand you have the assertive Aldis and on the other hand you have Pearce who just seems to going from one crisis to another. Both feel like real authority figures. WWE GMs have come a long way from being involved in some of the more sillier stuff during RA era. I agree with you that Aldis is better but I just wanted to give a shout-out to Pearce aswell, who I love and who I thought was especially great in that whole Bron Breakker/Paul Heyman segment a couple of weeks ago.

It's the logical feud to do for sure. You don't really have to think twice before putting these two in a program. But for me it's starting to feel alot like another Cody v KO, where we will see good matches, good character-work/promos but in the end the heel will lose 3/3 times.

So Saturday Night's Main-Event is streaming for free on YouTube outside the U.S. That's nice, I was planning to see it live but didn't have the energy to find a stream. Netflix has made watching WWE very easy.

Also, it's streaming on Peacock in the US now right? So no ads between matches?

You know even more than Benoit I think this guy reminds you of early Dynamite Kid. Before he went all out on the sauce. Benoit himself was massively inspired by Dynamite.

The most boring personality whether it’s as wrestler or booker to no one’s surprise delivers another bland and boring finish. Sooner this bozo gets sacked the better. 👍 #tripleAI

Damient Priest- buried
LA Knight- buried
Chad Gable- buried
And now Drew McIntyre officially-

that's why Dwayne needs to come back and throw gpt's bland plans off the rails.
At least our boy won though, good thing Seth is gone for a while so we can finally enjoy Raw despite triple gpt’s lack of any writing or booking talent

Haven't been able to enjoy WWE apart from Cena stuff since Mania this year. it's been too bland. I am just fast forwarding wwe these days.

Cody is showing signs of heel turn hopefully now. Rumble would be a good time to pull a trigger on it.

Dom's work rate is amazing. Has probably wrestled the most this year from WWE. Has succeeded in making a title reign mean something. Would like him to win the WHC or WWE championship within a year. someone who can defend the title on weekly shows as well. Not every feud needs 4 weeks of promos and segments.

Seems like Mania's two main matches will be
Punk vs Roman
Cody vs Randy/Sami
Roman or Sami will probably win the Rumble.
but Roman going for WHC doesn't seem right.

WHC finally looks like a legitimate world title as soon as punk lifted it. So happy for him. Took me back to 08-09 era iirc when he feuded with Jeff for it 😂

Otherwise it looked like a made up thing when made up stars like Seth or Jey held it.

Only Damien (pre burial) and Drew made it look like a world title before this.

Also, still a ways to go, and we know he says it as a meme atm, but Dom really is en route to surpassing Rey as a star. Really has been a worthy successor to Eddie’s “lie, cheat, steal” gimmick.

I hope Cena's last match is against Edge. That was bis greatest rivalry. Its the rivalry that made Cena who he is and made Edge who he is.

There is nothing that i need to say, for which i have to ever create another account. This account is enough to say anything. I don't hold anything to myself.
I meant from freelance_cricketer to Bhaijaan, kahan ho aap? :asghar :wenger

I got goosebumps man, I been waiting for a decade to get these goosebumps again, it took a freak injury to the messiah to make it happen, but finally all aboard on the Punk express; we need a dominant run from him now & their business needs it whether or not they want to admit, it has come at the perfect time when attendances were starting to dwindle, if people are having to fork out, give them good value and putting the WHC’s on Punk is a start. No pro in wrestling today values this championship quiet like him, finally credibility has been restored to the WHC which has desperately needed a big name to hold it. Punk is going to make the belt feel like the most special thing in the world and he earned this man, and still, despite putting on classics and being involved in the best feuds, WWE have still failed to maximise his upside and we need to rebuild now.

I enjoyed the match, Punk ran circles around Jey and the gulf in class was shocking but Punk tried to protect him as much as possible & was able to get an engaging story out the match, every single match he has had since being back has been just excellent, if Punk goes on like this he can match Shawn’s comeback run and he’s not far off already, this will cement his ATG status.

They finally figured out how they should be booking Jade, she just needs to be a human wrecking ball.

Cody/Drew was a great match but you can’t book this if Drew is going to lose repeatedly, if this all results in him going over foe the title I am all for it but we know that wont happen.

Punk & Cena world champions in 2025, somebody put me in a time machine, this is why no entertainment medium can match the ecstasy we get from wrestling when they get it right, at its worst it’s an abusive relationship and wrestling at its best is like a drug we can never give up and keep going around searching for every week and bah gawd last weekend we got our god damn long overdue fix!

Punk is already the best WHC in history under this new title’s incarnation thanks to 🤡🤡🤡🤡/10
For me, edge, Batista and undertaker were synonymous with the big gold, and Punk was the last big name to hold it.

Am glad that he’s got it now and can continue to build the WHC’s stature. It instantly looks far more serious of a title. Really is the case of the man making the title mean something

If this is true, Punk’s legend will grow, getting that match out of him in such a state:

This is very troubling if true. I would imagine that would be the end of his push and he would get suspended for a considerable period of time. There isn't a more reckless and irresponsible thing that you can do in the ring than this.

It's just a rumor so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but for his sake, I hope it isn't true.

Thank God, the overhyped Yeet Guy didn't win the world heavyweight title. It is already bad enough that he beat Gunter at Wrestlemania. We didn't need him beating Punk.

I hope that Punk has a lengthy title reign, but I have a feeling that Punk will drop the title to that joker Seth Rollins when he returns from his injury.

Yes I should reiterate it’a a rumour but seeing some clips on social media of him during the match make me think hmmmm, if it’s true he needs to see a doctor because I don’t believe he would be quiet there mentally to do something lime this.

I mean it’s pretty predictable isn’t it that his favourite puthar will beat Punk & they will tortue us for even longer, lets pray Seth trips down the stairs or something so he’s out for longer than 6 months.

But it seems for now that Bron is likely to beat Punk, I don’t mind that as long as it is done well & Punk has a decent reign to the point it means more for Bron when he does go over.

Then the likely route from there is Bron facing the favourite puthar for the WHC, that’s what I expect if Seth is out for a while but if be returns sooner then he will probably beat Punk.

I hate that I sound like Meltzer there, maybe I should start a newsletter because people pay for incoherent fantasy booking/predictions

Why is there a tournament to determine John Cena's final opponent? I wanted his final opponent to be a surprise, but that won't be the case anymore. Honestly, could Cena's retirement run have been booked any worse?

Reminds me of when they had a 4 Way on RAW to determine who would face The Undertaker at WrestleMania. That's how they set up Undertaker v CM Punk at WrestleMania lol.

Makes very little logical sense to have a tournament when there is championship or money on the line.

Eventhough they have booked Gunther relatively strong that one loss to Jey Uso is such a massive stain on his reputation that you just can't wash it awayt. And a big part of it is the definitive nature if the finish i.e. choking him out with his own finish in the middle of the ring, which makes it so hard to forget. You just don't see main-eventers/top guys in wrestling buried in that kind of way.

Love this, but mannn that picture of Punk with the Real AEW World Championship brought back some memories. Still remember the sense of excitement I felt when Punk returned to AEW after Brawl Out, came out on Collision and cut one of his best promos ever:

This is the best of Punk for me. He knows how to speak to the smart fans in a clever and intelligent way but at the same time everything he is saying here can be understood by casual fans too who are not aware of the backstage/internet stuff. Sadly we won't see this version of Punk in WWE till he turns heel.

I am thankful to Tony Khan, Jungle Boy etc. that we get to see Punk in a major company with a major belt being the major star that he is, but at the same time we shouldn't forget what they took from us - a CM Punk with complete creative freedom, who was also booking the best wrestling show on TV.

The Young Cucks had it all. They could have been relevant again...if they had just swallowed their pride for the greater good of doing business. Instead they chose to torpedo what could have been one of the greatest wrestling angles of modern times. Just shows how selfish and not cut out for this business they are because it's not a business to them, it's just a means to play with their friends.

Stevie's channel is worth watching just for the Triple H videos.:afridi1

These guys make a good p point about why Triple H is making himself the face of the company.

Also, still a ways to go, and we know he says it as a meme atm, but Dom really is en route to surpassing Rey as a star. Really has been a worthy successor to Eddie’s “lie, cheat, steal” gimmick.
As a character, yes. As a wrestler - NO. Rey's shoes are too big to be filled in anytime soon.

The big gold belt has never suited a wrestler more than it did on Batista.

I think WWE title belt and WHC title belt from 2003 were the best belts.

Gunther's WHC reign was nothing different from IC title run except he was holding a supposedly bigger title and booked even worse. He actually had a good IC title run but his WHC run was pretty poor.
