The Board of Control for Cricket in India have tried to shake things up a bit in the Indian cricketing scene after a disappointing year in 2022. On January 1, the BCCI had a review meeting that included not head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Chetan Sharma, where they discussed the roadmap for Indian cricket keeping the 2023 ODI World Cup in mind, and made a lot of changes and strategies.

However, now it has come to light, that the apex cricketing body has already found the replacement to Rahul Dravid for the position of Team India head coach, according to a report by News 18 Cricketnext. Dravid's contract ends after the 2023 ODI World Cup in November, and should he not choose to extend his tenure, it will be VVS Laxman who will replace his former India teammate at the helm.

Laxman has already handled several coaching assignments with Team India in the absence of Rahul Dravid. The most high profile tournament when VVS Laxman took charge of the Indian team was during the Asia Cup 2022, when Rahul Dravid had was diagnosed with COVID-19. However, he returned back to India after Dravid recovered and was back to his position befoe the first game against Pakistan.

VVS Laxman first coached Team India during their two-match T20I series against Ireland, as Rahul Dravid was preparing with the first-choice team for the rescheduled one-off Test match vs England. He then was in charge of the coaching duties for the 1st T20I vs England. His first full fledged series as Team India head coach was in the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe. After the Asia Cup, VVS Laxman returned to the helm of affairs in the T20I series against New Zealand right afte the T20 World Cup.

VVS Laxman currently serves as the director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

It is good to have a stable succession line for coaches.
Next couple of years will be a transition towards next generation of India players post Kohli-Rohit era. Steadying hands of Dravid and VVS at the helm is needed.

May not provide big results but will bring in good attitude and processes in cricketers. Hopefully can help get the likes of Iyer, KLR and Sanju to step up to next level

His expressions when clueless/confused are beautiful btw

they've got the wrong former SRH coach.
remember him saying aggression but careful, lets see how he does

Not much of a difference between the two - You are swapping one defensive coach with another. With all the money in its kitty, why doesn’t India opt for a foreign coach?

Why wait for after the WC?. Announce it then not a year before.

Never thought I'd be saying this a few years ago - but bring back Shastri.

Very disappointed at the way the BCCI is being run. The president is a stamp. The secretary is too inexperienced and is easily manipulated by very experienced members.
The treasurer is a newbie too.

Lol.. Vvs is not good coach.. He literally screwed srh with his baffling selections. He picked kane over warner and many blinders.

The first thing that needs to happen is that the undeserving couch potato Jay Shah should be ejected.

BCCI is giving Everyone a chance, who'll be next? Sachin, sehwag, Harbhajan? Or dhoni?

On topic, what a pathetic decision! No wonder, we hardly win anything of note.

Hell no.

Being timid is not a good attitude!

One dud goes and another dud in line , dont know how many more dud still left to ruin the Indian cricket

Akash Chopra, Venky Prasad, Vinay Kumar etc should be groomed as well

Former India captain and current head coach Rahul Dravid left for Bengaluru early on Friday morning while the rest of the Indian cricket team including other support staff members will leave for Thiruvananthapuram later in the day for the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka. Dravid took an early morning flight from Kolkata to Bengaluru due to health reasons. He reportedly complained of blood pressure issues during the second ODI on Thursday and was checked by doctors of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

The Indian cricket team is set to embark upon a new adventure on the tour of Ireland in the T20I series. While head coach Rahul Dravid has been given a rest for the assignment, even VVS Laxman, who usually steps into Dravid's shoes in such cases, will not be touring with the boys. In the absence of the two India stalwarts, the young Indian team will see former domestic stalwart Sitanshu Kotak taking up the role of the head coach. Kotak is presently the head coach of the India A team at the NCA.

As per multiple reports, Laxman was supposed to be the head coach of the Indian team on the tour of Ireland but his next task is to oversee a high-performance training camp near Bengaluru. The camp will last for three weeks, making him unavailable for the Ireland T20Is that begin on August 18.

It has also been reported that Kotak will be accompanied by Sairaj Bahutule as the team's bowling coach.

"Kotak and Sairaj Bahutule (bowling coach) will travel with Jasprit Bumrah & Co for the three-match T20I series (from August 18-23), as Laxman will conduct the high-performance camp from August 16 to September 5, for which youngsters like Abhishek Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Prabhsimran Singh, Sai Sudarshan, Akash Singh, Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Divyansh Saxena have been called up by the BCCI," Times of India quoted a source as saying.

The series might only feature T20Is, but it remains quite important for the Indian team management, keeping in mind the return of Jasprit Bumrah, and will feature exciting young guns like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, etc.

Sitanshu has the experience of coaching the Inda A team for two years and the Ireland opportunity allows him to work with some of the next-gen Indian players who could go on to be the future greats of the game.

Nothing will change. We will continue to be a middling side unless we revamp our horrible domestic structure

His two-year contract will expire at the end of ODI World Cup but head coach Rahul Dravid's future will be followed keenly in case the Indian team lifts the coveted trophy. It is a foregone conclusion that Dravid will be one of the fall guys if India cannot at least make it to the title clash as a mere semi-final appearance wouldn't be considered good enough. BCCI may search for a coach again and it will be interesting to see if 'The Wall' will be keen on a renewal of contract -- partial or full -- in case Board supremo Jay Shah offers a fresh deal.

There is a school of thought that Dravid, in case he is keen, should continue as the red ball coach with South Africa (away) and England (home series) series scheduled very close to the World Cup. There is no harm in having separate coaches for limited overs and Test format moving into the next cycle post World Cup, just like England have Brendon McCullum (red ball) and Matthew Mott (white ball).

Dravid has been given breaks from assignments to recuperate as living out of suitcase for someone, who is involved in a tremendously high-pressure job, could be taxing. Someone like Ashish Nehra (successful IPL coach) is an apt choice but sources close to the left-arm seamer of yesteryears have said that he is "not interested" as of now with his contract with Gujarat Titans running till the end of 2025 season.

"Suppose India wins the World Cup, Dravid himself might not want a renewal as he would like to end his stint on a high. But if you ask me, post World Cup, the BCCI should seriously think of having separate coaches for separate formats. They should ask Rahul to continue as red ball coach," a former BCCI office-bearer told PTI on conditions of anonymity. At this point, whether it is Dravid or the Board top brass, they would like the focus on the big event, which starts October 5.

While Dravid arrived amidst lot of fanfare after Ravi Shastri's departure but as a white ball coach, he hasn't really left an impression which could compel anyone to consider him as a shrewd tactician.

Rather, he has been perceived as someone, who is a bit on the defensive when it comes to taking tough calls -- both in T20Is and ODIs.

If in T20I World Cup, he allowed the top-three that had past its sell-by-date in shortest format to continue, the decision to drop Ravichandran Ashwin during the World Test Championship final didn't seem to be a very prudent call.

The lack of a right-arm spinner (finger or wrist) in the current World Cup squad or the bullishness to include KL Rahul, without him proving his match-fitness are decisions that might come back to haunt him.

Even though a lot will depend on team's World Cup performance but Dravid isn't a great white ball coach and someone with more hands-on approach could help the team in the next phase when some legends will be expected to walk into the sunset.

History is replete with incidents that if a team loses a major event, the coaches often become scapegoats.

Dravid himself had seen that when Greg Chappell had no option but to send his resignation after the 2007 debacle when he was the captain.

In 2023, the shoe is on the other foot and Dravid wouldn't want his coaching legacy to be tarnished like it happened with his captaincy where one tournament result trumps all the good work done.

He would want that Rohit and his players help him enjoy that surreal feeling of being a World Champion, something that has eluded him.

He never really had the proverbial 'rub of green' when it came to holding the centre-stage during the seminal moments in Indian cricket.

Whether it was Lord's 1996 when the other debutant Sourav Ganguly scored the hundred or at Taunton when Ganguly's 183 overshadowed his century.

His 180 at the Eden Gardens during the historic 2001 Test against Australia was sheer class. Just that VVS Laxman's 281 was classier.

Under his captaincy, India successfully chased a record 17 games in ODIs between 2006 and 2007, only to come up with their worst World Cup performance since 1979.

Dravid deserves a fitting redemption and it is now up to his players to give him one.

Ajith Wadekar, Anshuman Gaekwad, etc, were much better!

Shastri/Kohli was the best India duo

That was Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar level dominance

i dont think Laxman could become a good coach.. i think Ravi Shastri is a better option.

Dravid’s tenure has been a disaster. Hopefully Laxman will be a welcome change.

India is giving all their legends a try. I guess Tendulkar, segwag and harbhajan are next

Bad decision. He is another vocal supporter of "experienced" guys. More than Dravid.
India needs a foreign coach If they want to win. Foreign coaches will pick players based on merit to an extent compared to indian origin coaches who will display bias towards people they connect with.

Vvs isn't the right fit. His affinity towards line and length bowlers again spells disaster for India.

With pandya as our captain, we need a smart and up to date operator as a coach. I don't think laxman has either of those qualities. He was happy to pick all the safe options even bhuvi in india tour of newzeland 2022 .Both dravid and laxman should not be part of coaching for seniors.

Happy birthday to VVS Laxman !
Nov 1st 1974

Best known for his 281 against Australia where India were asked to follow on and he ended up winning the match for his country.

Remarkable innings.

Laxman's 281 voted the best Test knock of last half century - Rediff.com

Laxman was considered captaincy material. Maybe this will work. But he's like Dravid. A defensive guy. India.doesnt need a foreign coach but maybe some one that's a bit more aggressive in tactics.

Who should be next Indian cricket team's head coach?
Would prefer a foreign coach this time .vvs will be the same as dravid and inferior. He was a disaster at sunrisers hyderabad in ipl.. but all news reports point to him being the next head coach and there goes India's next t20wc..

VVS Laxman will coach in a format which he either never played (T20) or good at it (ODI). Is this some kind of joke?

We should hire Eoin Morgan or Shane Watson as India's white ball coach who are mentally strong and knows how to win pressure games. They may charge a lot giving up their lucrative media contracts but hey BCCI has loads of money.

Laxmans 1st year or 2 as ipl batsman was disastrous. Just not cut out for t20s. Same thing as ipl coach was disaster..ind needs somebody different - Morgan and Watson are good options or maybe a bazball type of coach like Mccullum..

Will we ever see Sachin Tendulkar or Sourav Ganguly as Indian coach?

This transition from Dravid to Laxman might not work.... They really need a foreign coach or maybe they can bring Ravi Shastri back?

Dravid’s tenure has been a disaster. Hopefully Laxman will be a welcome change.
If anything Laxman will be worse, if he runs Indian cricket the way he ran RCB or SRH.
He is a highly opinionated man who is completely closed to new ideas. Dravid was in fact, better.

Laxman gave chance to Bhuvi after t20 wc in 2022,knowing he don't have any chance to represent India further.Dravid kept on giving chances to Chahal even though he admitted publicly india don't have batting help from tailenders. He never tried Bishnoi even though Bishnoi was better. Both prefer safety first and won't offer anything new to the knock out issues.

Will we ever see Sachin Tendulkar or Sourav Ganguly as Indian coach?

I don't think so.

Sachin is too meek to coach a team like India where there are so many egos and big names. He can do a great work with U19 boys though.

Dada is too disruptive, wants discipline and things to go his way. This will be Kumble 2.0 in making. It will also not go down well with players or BCCI.

Its time for India to hire foreign coaches who recently retired and are mentally strong like Eoin Morgan, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, Aaron Finch etc.

Sachin Tendulkar is not a coaching material...he is too soft character.
