West Indies [289 & 415/6d] beat England [77 & 246] by 381 runs in the first Test, lead series 1-0

The Kensington Oval will be the scene of the first match of the three-Test series between the Windies and England, as both sides begin their first Test assignments of 2019.

Overview

Windies vs England
First Test
Kensington Oval, Bridgetown
Wednesday, 23 January, 10:00am local time, 14:00am GMT

The home side arrive into this series on the back of two Test defeats in Bangladesh, a 64-run defeat in Chattogram followed by a crushing innings defeat in Dhaka. Nevertheless, they will be boosted by the return of captain Jason Holder, who enjoyed a sensational 2018. The hulking all-rounder led from the front across the year, averaging 37.33 with the bat and just 12.39 with the ball, as he collected 33 wickets from just six Test appearances, before a shoulder injury brought his year to a premature end.

Eyes will also be focussed on the recall of Darren Bravo after more than two years in the wilderness. With 49 Test caps to his name, alongside eight hundreds at an average of exactly 40, Bravo is a welcome addition to a batting line-up that was all at sea in Bangladesh.

Bravo is just one of a number of additions to the Windies squad, with young tearaway Alzarri Joseph back in the reckoning having recovered from a stress fracture that eliminated his presence in the side over the course of 2018. The Bridgetown crowd may also witness two new Test debutants, with Jamaica’s John Campbell, and Barbados’ Shamarh Brooks in the Windies squad.

The visitors will begin the first Test looking to build on a sparkling run of form. A 4-1 series win at home against India last summer was followed by a historic 3-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka, their first series win in Asia since 2012.

With dominant performances across their three Tests in the subcontinent, plenty of names in England’s squad merit a place in the playing XI. Nevertheless, there are bound to be a few changes from the line-up that emerged victorious in the final Test in Colombo, with three spinners unlikely to be required in Bridgetown. With a luxury of bowling options at their disposal, England will be able to mix and match their line-up depending on the conditions on offer across the series.

A batting line-up that will most likely see either Ben Foakes or Moeen Ali at No. 8 highlights the strength in depth currently on offer on the batting front. They look well primed for a first Test series win in the Caribbean since 2004.

Key players

Shai Hope (Windies): The Windies’ tour of England in 2017 saw the emergence of Hope as a batting star. Twin hundreds at Headingley led his side to one of the most famous wins in their recent history and while his Test returns in Bangladesh were weak, consecutive hundreds in the ODI series re-confirmed what an audacious talent he is.

Jos Buttler (England): 2018 was the year Buttler truly emerged as a Test batsman. Recalled to the side on the back of an exceptional IPL, England’s ODI wicketkeeper delivered on his promise as a specialist batsman, finishing the year with 760 runs at an average of 44.70. Having just enjoyed an impressive spell in the Big Bash for Sydney Thunder, much will be expected of England’s vice-captain.

Conditions

The first three days should see the sun shining in Bridgetown, but light showers are forecasted for Saturday, with some potential drizzle on the fifth day. Worries about any weekend rain may be premature however. Sri Lanka’s visit to the same ground last year was a low-scoring pace-dominated affair, with the home side bowled out for just 93 in their second innings.

Squads

Windies: Jason Holder (captain), Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican

Oshane Thomas is included as cover for Joseph.

England: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Ben Foakes, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes

Hopefully they will play Ali!

ENG XI: K Jennings, R Burns, J Bairstow, J Root (C), B Stokes, J Buttler, M Ali, B Foakes (W), S Curran, A Rashid, J Anderson
WI XI: K Brathwaite, J Campbell, D Bravo, S Hope, S Hetmyer, R Chase, S Dowrich (W), J Holder (C), K Roach, S Gabriel, A Joseph
WI win toss & bat .

Absolutely shocking selection by visitors going with just 2 bowlers & 3 all rounders & out of the 2 bowlers , Rashid is no mug with the bat .
Hosts too are very defensive with Holder at 8 . They should have played 4 bowlers & Holder at 7 .
Are we in for a draw ?

England usually play a lot of all-rounders. Moeen and Rashid have been their main spinners for some time whilst Curran had a superb series vs India in the summer.

I'm more surprised by the fact England are playing two spinners while West Indies are only playing one. Looks like a dry surface.

I do think Holder is good enough to bat #7 in Tests, probably wasted a bit at #8. Sammy was a slogger so good at #8 for quick runs while the tail lasts but Holder will be a bit wasted there.

Quite an interesting selection tactically really- WI have backed quicks on a pitch they seem to think will deteriorate so much that Holder & Gabriels height can be the weapon and have only selected off spinners- accuracy on a deteriorating pitch.

England with a leggie and an offie. Backing spin to be the winner & Curran to produce with the ball now.

Both teams have a slight bits & pieces look to me- spinning allrounders everywhere.

Love to see Anderson bowling.

Will be a sad day when he will retire.

W.I playing 4 quicks and England 2 spinners.

Clearly both teams viewing wicket differently!

Filthy short ball from Curran. Why was Broad dropped given his form in the tour matches ?

Oh dear, bad start by Wasam Acurran. Very surprised to see him in the side ahead of Broad, and getting the new ball.

80mph fare from Sam Curran. Hasn't found his rhythm yet.

That is just how he bowls. Probably gets it to 83-84 at times.

This is the key missing piece in englands jigsaw, a genuine fast bowler.

In terms of the match, really interested to see how lara bravo performs, hope, dowrich and Braithwaite will be key too.

Really like England playing two spinners and the more I see of root, theetter he handles rashid, so definite improvement to the guy who was a hapless spin captain just months back. I guess he has learned from Morgan who is world class as captain.

Kaptaan sarfraz take note.

From the atmosphere at the ground you'd be mistaken to think the match was taking place in Birmingham, not Barbados. Except for the beautiful, bright sunshine, blue skies and warm weather.

Shame the Windian crowds aren't present in numbers to really make this a partisan affair in favor of the home team. Feel for the Windian players.

It was watered extensively in last 2 days as it was too dry . I still think Curran should have batted at 8 & Broad should have been in the 11 .
To think that this is Barbados , you would have expected a more result oriented wicket .

England are way too defensive & WI no better . I think DRAW a strong possibility .

England Test Record in West Indies is not that good at all, only one Test Series win in the last 51 years.

This looks a very good batting pitch. Windies may have an out of form batting lineup but should be looking for 350-400 at least.

This strategy of playing allrounders in place of bowlers will eventually let England down in tests.

It's fine for ODI's on flat pitches and if you don't have match winning bowlers.

Why do you say they are out of form ?
Showers on day 4 & 5 .
I believe England did a major blunder by not playing Broad for a batsmen & i would rather have Leach for Rashid .
Windies quicks will get more purchase here .

It's obvious Ali has invested a LOT of time and money in his beard. Glistening and not one strand of hair out of place. Amla should take note.

lol , for me both are The Beard .
Jimmy & Stokes bowled 8 overs each in 1st session .
Root i suspect has no clue what specialist bowlers mean .

England team will stuggle in good batting conditions to take 20 wickets. One of the reasons why they got thrashed in last ashes.

Broad would have made better use of the new ball compared to Curran. Also Leach is a better spinner than Rashid. England's love for all rounders is infuriating.

WI have increased the run rate well. Braithwaite should aim to just bat and bat and try to run England bowlers into the ground. 400 plus would be a good score.

England may well go on to win this series comfortably, but this idea of picking bowlers based on their batting ability doesn't seem like a great idea to me. When Anderson retires next year they will struggle to bowl out good teams even at home.

I hope West Indies win the series. Could give the side a lot of confidence for future series.

Amongst Test nations who've played more than 2 Tests in 2018, WI had the lowest batting average:

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...2018;spanval1=span;template=results;type=team

I agree on Jack Leach - he provides control that allows Moeen to attack whereas with Rashid you know he'll deliver one bad ball per over.

43rd over on & Curran has bowled just 5 . Clearly they picked him on his batting ability

This Windian line up looks the business. If they bat with intent and pull in the same direction, they'd be owning bowling attacks everywhere.

Ben Stokes making the difference.

You could tell by Bravo dismissal he was rusty.

Hope needs to kick on here. He has a good start. Doesn't seem to be easy to settle on this pitch.

Anderson has absolutely trundled here. Average pace of 131.5 kph.

Doesn’t matter as he is moving it and doing the stock job.

What they need is a quick bowler instead of Curran. Once again the 3 x FM mistake by England.

Without a single batsman averaging even close to 45, they will not be owning anything.

Even game so far, WI will be dissapointed that that 2 batsmen have got starts and got out. Shai hope needs to get a big score here.

England with 4 allrounders? You don't see that often in Test cricket.

It's something Mickey has been working on as well.

Possibly this is the best batting pair of WI on the crease , WI would be hoping to get to 400 here

Rashid and Moen need to bowl better than this. Hetmyer will take anything loose apart.

Hetmyer needs more first class experience to improve further. Hopefully West Indies stick with him in tests.

If these 2 can see off the new ball, West Indies will be confident of a good 1st innings total.
