Pick Thakur only in a 4 seamer option. He's not going to get picked in a 3 seamer team.
Even then I'd be really really surprised if someone like Thaur is selected to play in a game as important as WTC finals! Lets face it, he is still a bits and pieces cricketer and could only make his debut due to injuries to our front line pacers.

If you pick Shami, Siraj, Ishant and Bumrah in the same team, then the last 4 would contribute a grand total of 4 runs together.
I know. However knowing about penchant of Kohli for beefing up the bowling attack instead of batting is very well known.

If conditions are suitable for pacers we don't need 4 pacers and a spinner. 3 pacers with jaddu will do.

And its a one off test. Unlike our usual 4/5 test per series where we have to preserve our pacers, we can afford to bowl them more per inning.

Looking at the current New Zealand playing in England...NZ are the favorites...India won't stand a chance...they got everything right batting bowling all are in good form.Imagine attack of Jamieson bolt and southee in moving seaming pitch...Lack of preparation will cost india badly

Thanks to the power of technology and video editing, we can see Rohit Sharma middling everything

India has to be underdogs here, I don't believe there will be a result due to rain as it will be washed out. However if there is to be a result, NZ should win it.

Isn't there extra reserve day in case of rain?

Pant scored 121* from 94 balls against Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Siraj, Ashwin bowling attack in the practice game ahead of the WTC final .Gill also scored 85 runs from 135 balls .

Well done Gill and Pant, need this kind of performance in the final and England series as well.

India stand no chance against this firing New Zealand team. They are way too strong for India.

I hope Ajaz Patel doesn't find himself flighting the ball to Rishabh Pant in the WTC Final. He might get a Jack Leach type treatment.

No chance in hell this poor Indian team winning against new Zealand. It's gonna be one sided contest.

Yeah, no chance that the number 1 test team, who actually topped the charts of the test championship ranking, would actually end of winning the whole thing.

No chance at all.

India won’t be #1 any longer when NZ wrap up this test tomorrow.

Good to see the fighting talk from the Kiwis. Hope they can keep it up when they next tour India.

Stop worshipping man.check India's record in England in last 10 years they have lost 11 and won only 2 while drawing 1 test. They won't win against this new Zealand team. They stand no chance. We will see.

For those asking..
India in Tests since 2015
Home and away - 32 Tests each
At home won 25 (78.13%), away won 15 (46.88%)
Out of 64 Tests only five against Bangladesh (4) & Afghanistan (1). And none against Zimbabwe.

WTC Final: I will be looking forward to Trent Boult vs Rohit Sharma contest, says Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, who redefined the art of opening batting in Test cricket, feels that Rohit's qualities and recent form at the top of the order certainly makes him a candidate to succeed during the six Test matches in England this summer.

Opener Rohit Sharma countering Trent Boult’s incoming deliveries will make for a fascinating contest, something that Virender Sehwag will be looking forward to during the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand, starting in Southampton on June 18.

Sehwag, who redefined the art of opening batting in Test cricket, feels that Rohit’s qualities and recent form at the top of the order certainly makes him a candidate to succeed during the six Test matches in England this summer.

“No doubt Trent Boult-Tim Southee combination will pose a lot of challenge for Indians. They can move the ball both ways and are brilliant while bowling in partnerships also,” Sehwag told PTI during an interview.

“Boult vs Rohit Sharma will be a contest that I would be looking forward to. If Rohit gets set and see off Boult’s opening spell, it will be a treat to watch,” feels one of India’s greatest match winners in the longer format.

While this would be Rohit’s first shot at opening in English conditions, the experience of playing Tests in 2014 will certainly help him.

“Rohit is a fantastic batsman and he has played Test cricket in England earlier also (2014) so I think he can manage well as we have seen in recent times when he has opened the batting. I have no doubt that he will score runs in England this time.

“Obviously, as it is for any opener, he would have to be careful for the first 10 overs and see off that new ball to understand the conditions first. I am sure he will get a chance to show his range of strokes,” said the man, who has scored more than 8000 Test runs.

If there is one player apart from Rohit, who can be as maverick as Sehwag was during his glory days, it is Rishabh Pant, who is going through a purple patch in his international career.

Sehwag wants Pant to bat the way he knows and not get bogged down by too much analysis and dissection about technique and temperament needed to be successful in England.

“Rishabh Pant knows his batting better than anybody else and he should focus on what he can do best for the team rather than get worried about what ex-cricketers, commentators and media is saying,” Sehwag said about the keeper, who has already scored a hundred in English conditions during the tour of 2018.

“The focus for Rishabh should be one one ball at a time. If the ball is there to be hit, he should hit it. I don’t think he needs to change approach as he has got success with the same approach and Test matches are different ball game.

“Of late, he has understood his role in the team and he is a very critical player for India in Test matches coming in at No 6. If he gets set and starts scoring runs, he can change the game in a session and we have all seen that.”

Once and for all, Sehwag also wants to put at rest the debate around Cheteshwar Pujara’s “strike-rate” and “intent”.

“In Test cricket, I don’t think strike-rate has ever mattered. When I played Test cricket for India, after me there was a Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman coming into bat. All of whom played with a Test strike rate of 50s mostly which was perfectly fine,” Sehwag said.

“The most important aspect will be to bat well and for that you need to stay and build an innings. I am happy as long as Pujara is scoring important runs for the team. Till he scores runs at whatever strike rate it is, I am okay with it,” he said.

Sehwag also believes that rather than going in with four pacers, India should go with two spinners in their five-man bowling line-up as it would also strengthen their lower middle-order batting.

“I don’t how the wicket would look like on June 18th but one thing I have always believed is that you need to play to your strengths. If India can play with five specialist bowlers that will be great thing because I still believe that two spinners will come into effect on fourth and fifth day.

“Two spinners will be good for India because both Ashwin and Jadeja are capable all-rounders. That also adds depth to your batting. You don’t need a sixth batsman with both of them around.”

Boult hopes playing Edgbaston Test will put him in ‘good stead’ for WTC final
Trent Boult was out of quarantine sooner than expected as UK relaxed its quarantine rules. (AP/FILE)
Initially not expecting to feature in the ongoing second Test against England, New Zealand pacer Trent Boult is hopeful that achieving game fitness rather than bowling in the nets will put him in “good stead” in the upcoming World Test Championship final against India.

Boult, who missed out on the first Test against England as he opted to spend time with his family after the suspension of the IPL in May, was also set to sit out the second match as well.

However, the pace spearhead was out of quarantine sooner than expected as UK relaxed its quarantine rules.

“Initially I wasn’t expecting to play this game but everything fell into line, and I gave myself that chance to get out there and I think I’ll definitely be better off for that head out,” Boult was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

“It’s one thing loading and getting through numbers in the nets but to simulate that kind of game fitness and having to come back three, four or five times in a day, there’s no real other way to do that. So I’m hoping it puts me in good stead (for the WTC final).”

The forecast doesn't look that bad. We also have a reserve day so we'll most certainly have a result.

Now I'm disappointed that aus didn't make the final. It's clear the india has no chance against boult and co. Especially without a proper time to adjust to the conditons

A test match between Aus vs this nz team in English conditons could have resulted in the most fascinating contest in cricket today.

Temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler later in the week when the weather returns to normal and thunderstorms hit Britain.

UK weather forecasts show Britain will be hotter than Ibiza and Mykonos as England kick off Euro 2020 today - but it won't last long as the Met Office says it will soon feel 10 degrees cooler with thundery showers.

Nah, Australia would’ve smashed NZ, they’ve had a clear psychological edge over them ever since the 2015 WC final.

WTC final: 'Preparation for this Test a little simpler,' Southampton curator reveals how he plans to prepare surface

Both the teams have high-quality pace bowlers and Lee wants them to be in the game at all times.

With the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand taking place in England, fans are eagerly waiting to see how the pitch is prepared for the all-important final in Southampton. The conditions in England are conducive to fast bowling and it is expected the pitch for the WTC final would assist the pacers. The curator of the Ageas Bowl has now revealed how he plans to prepare the pitch for the final.

Head groundsman at Southampton Simon Lee is aiming to produce a pacy and bouncy pitch for the World Test Championship final with some assistance for spinners later on in the game.

The final will be played between India and New Zealand from June 18.

"Pitch preparation for this Test is a little simpler as we are a neutral venue, we are guided by the ICC, but we all want is a good pitch that offers an even contest between the teams," Lee told ESPNcricinfo.

"For me personally I just want to get something out that has some pace, bounce and carry in the pitch.

"It can be a hard thing to do in England as the weather doesn't help us most of the time, but the forecast in the build-up is good with a lot of sun, so we are hopeful that we'll get some pace and a hard pitch without over-rolling it and killing it."

Both the teams have high quality pace bowlers and Lee wants them to be in the game at all times.

"Pace just makes red-ball cricket exciting, I'm a cricket fan and I want to produce a pitch where the cricket lovers have to watch every ball in case they miss something, be that some class batting or an amazing spell of bowling.

"A maiden over can be quite exciting if it's a battle of skill between both bowler and batter. So, yeah, if we can get some pace and bounce in the pitch, but not too one-sided towards seam movement, we'll be happy," he said.

In the spin department, India have the edge over New Zealand with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja expected to be part of the playing eleven. Lee said spinners too would come into play eventually.

"As I said, the forecast is looking okay, the pitches dry out very quickly here as we do have some sand mixed into our cricket loam, which helped it hold together when the pitches were re-laid some 10 years ago, but it can help it spin as well.

"To get to that point we'll need the seamers to bowl, some runs scored, and make some rough along the way. The pitch will always get talked about a lot, but you need the players to play their part to make a good game," the curator said.

"...so if we produce a pitch that allows the players to show their skills at the top level and we have an entertaining game for the fans, we will be more than satisfied."

I am inclined to include KL Rahul in the playing XI. He scored a brilliant hundred in the practice game and when on song there is no better player than him.

How I wish Rahul opens for us instead of Rohit Sharma who will be a walking wicket in England against dukes. But knowing it wont happen, I would play the below team:

Rohit
Gill
Pujara
Kohli (c)
Rahul (vc)
Pant (wk)
Jadeja
Ashwin
Ishant
Shami
Bumrah

My prediction: New Zealand are going to smoke us.

We just don't have the batting.

I like your team but make 1 small change. Replace Rahul with Wash, then we have another bat & ball option further strengthening the team. Rahul is a hit and miss and he has had too many chances, time to look towards the future.

So what is the common consensus here for the excuse in case of an Indian win?

Flat pitch as part of evil BCCI conspiracy , Boult not fit, NZ mentally tired after test series v Eng etc?

3 spinners would be an overkill in Eng. Only one of Jaddu or Washington can play.

The winners of the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final between India and New Zealand will take home a purse of $ 1.6 million along with the ICC Test Championship Mace, the International Cricket Council announced today.

The losing team will get $ 800,000 for finishing second in the nine-team competition, which was played over a near two-year cycle, adding context to Test cricket and to crown the first official world champions in the longest format of the game.

The prize money for the team finishing third in the ICC World Test Championship Standings Powered by MRF Tyres is $ 450,000. The team fourth on the table will be awarded $ 350,000, the one that finishes fifth gets $ 200,000 while the remaining four teams will get $ 100,000 each.

The Test Mace, previously given to teams topping the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings will now be given to the WTC winners. In case the final ends in a draw or a tie, the finalists will split the prize money for the first and second places and share possession of the Mace during the time they remain champions.

About the Mace: The Mace, designed by English luxury brand Thomas Lyte, is based around the global nature of Test cricket and the competing nations.

The focal point of the Mace is the cricket ball since it is at the core of the game whether being bowled, hit or fielded. Encircling the ball is the globe, referencing the global reach of Test cricket and one can see the silver gilt cricket ball through the oceans of the map.

The countries of the world are supported on the longitude lines you see on a globe – this allows for an interesting interplay of light on the different surfaces, especially as the mace is moved and catches that light. The world is surrounded by a central belt carrying the insignia of all 12 competing Test nations, with space to add others in the future.
A silver gilt laurel band spirals up the shaft of the mace – the shaft itself styled as a stump – a reference to the all-important wicket.

There is no doubt that aus vs nz wtc final could have been a much more thrilling contest. Indian batsmen without proper practice will be clueless, India doesnt really have a chance to win.

NZ batsmen play swing will and the bowlers are pretty lethal in swinging conditions.Australia is low in confidence after losing against india. Besides, Smith and Marnus, the Aussie batsmen would've struggled against the kiwi bowlers.

The hype leading up to WTC finals is getting unreal. Clearly if India wasn’t in the final the match wouldn’t have got this much coverage.

Pretty sure you didn't follow India's last test series in England. He got all 5 tests but scored only 1 century that too in the dead rubber test which we also lost in the end. As I said before the last England tour as well KL Rahul should only play in LOI teams and I would also prefer him to keep wickets there. Pant can play as a specialist batsman if he is that good in LOIs. :inti

Even in LoIs, Rahul is just a glory hunter and maker of easy runs. His s/r remains pathetic for most part of his LoI innings. He has gone nowhere ever since he gone off the boil after his initial exploits.

He'll make us pay dearly due to his tuk tuk in world tournaments.

If we can't even drop Rahane why do you think we'll drop Pujara, who is still more valuable and has done more than 1 fluke innings at MCG Rahane!

Any idea who the commentators are gonna be?

I read that Dinesh Karthik and Gavaskar are there for the Indian representation, Simon Doull for the Kiwi presence and Nass and Athers as the neutral English contingent. Pretty good team I have to say, if you can ignore Gavaskar's (grand) dad jokes. Really hoping we get the full Sky feed here in India, I don't want to hear Lakshman Sivaramakrishnan and Akash Chopra talking from a Mumbai studio for the final.

Might as well search for a Sky link for its great pre and post match analysis shows instead of watching cringeworthy cartoons of Kohli and Kane running towards the trophy on Star sports.

The weather forecast has changed.

Remember, and overs lost below a total of 450 overs by the end of Day 5 automatically lead to a Day 6, which terminates when 450 overs have been completed.

Up to now we were expecting warm(ish) and sunny conditions, possibly with some summer storms.

That has now changed.

The forecast from the UK Met Office is now:

Day 1: cloudy, maximum 18 degrees
Day 2: scattered clouds, maximum 18 degrees
Day 3: cloudy, maximum 18 degrees
Day 4: cloudy with short showers, maximum 18 degrees

This means that the pitch is unlikely to break up and spin bowlers may be less effective than usual at Southampton. I had thought that Jadeja at 7 and Ashwin at 8 was a good option, but in cooler, cloudier conditions really a swing or seam bowling all-rounder is more likely to be useful than second spinner. Pandiya would have been a real asset.

I was expecting New Zealand to pick Patel instead of Santner, which would strengthen the spin bowling but lengthen the tail, with Kyle Jameson at 7 (8 Southee, 9 Wagner, 10 Patel, 11 Boult).

But cooler cloudier conditions make the spin bowler's batting output more important than his bowling.

I'm now expecting:

7 Santner
8 Jameson
9 Southee
10 Wagner
11 Boult

I just don't think there's any way to get De Grandhomme into the starting eleven.

Normally at Southampton you bat first and hope that the sunshine will make the pitch break up on Day 5 to assist your spinners.

It's sunnier and drier than most English venues, so you can often make high scores (e.g. Zak Crawley 267).

The problem is what happened to India in New Zealand fifteen months ago. The Indians batted first in both Tests - against a Kookaburra ball which doesn't swing for as long as an English Dukes ball.

Wellington:
India 165 (were 40-3 in the 18th over)
NZ 348
India 191 (collapsed against the OLD ball)
NZ 9-0, won by 10 wickets

Christchurch:
India 242
NZ 235
India 124
NZ 132-3, won by 7 wickets

I'm not sure that India will be confident about batting first after the low scores they made in New Zealand last year. Pant will be confident, but I'm less sure about the others.

Mind you, that India team hadn't arrived early enough. Note though that NZ never came close to scoring 400 themselves either!

Everything is against India.

Less preparation,

Less experience in conditions,

Lower ranked,

Less fans in ground,

Only true spirit of cornered tigers can save us.

I would like to formally request PM of Pakistan to give a pep talk to Team India so this test can remain competitive and underdog India have a chance.

India is carrying two walking wickets: Rohit and Rahane. For these two, along with Pujara, this WTC Final and the subsequent England series should be a make or break for their career in tests. I am not convinced with Vihari either. I think India has a very weak batting lineup. I will be glad to be proven wrong though.

I don't see the point in playing Santner. The guy's test match bowling is club-standard and his batting doesn't bring you too many runs either.

For NZ it should be either 5 seamers (probably with de Grandhomme playing the allrounder role) - probably the preferable option given how miserable the weather forecast is - or you go with Ajaz and drop one of the quicks (probably Wagner - though that'd be very tough on him given the way he bowled last week).

If it's cloudy, de Grandhomme should be in the XI. He does well vs India and can score quick fifties with bat too.

The only problem is they might have to drop Wagner which is not going to be easy because if there is nothing for pacers, he can still be dangerous.

If they want to have Wagner which means going with four pacers, then instead of picking Santner, why not go with Mitchell or Ravindra. They are atleast better batsman than Santner.

The BLACKCAPS have confirmed their 15-man squad to contest the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final against India, at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton from June 18-22.

Ajaz Patel has been selected as the specialist spinner, with Colin de Grandhomme the all-rounder and Will Young the specialist batting cover, while Tom Blundell is the back-up wicket-keeper.

Doug Bracewell, Jacob Duffy, Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner are the five players who will drop out from the original 20-player touring squad for the England Test series.

Coach Gary Stead noted the contributions of the departing group and thanked them for their efforts over the past month.

“It’s not easy to say goodbye to guys who have given so much to the group.

“Doug, Jacob and Rachin have been selfless in their attitude to helping the team and supporting those in the playing XI.

“I’d also like to highlight our fourth coach Heinrich Malan who has done a great job behind the scenes working with the players, in particular those who were not selected in the playing XIs to face England. That work was on show for all to see in the second Test with the six players coming in and performing so well.

“With our squad being reduced, Heinrich and our second physio Vijay Vallabh will return home to New Zealand on June 16, along with Jacob, Rachin and Mitchell. We wish them well and thank them for their efforts.”

Commenting on the squad selections, Stead said.

“There’s had to be some tough calls with Mitchell and Daryl victims of the fierce competition we currently have for places in the Test side.

“We’ve gone with Ajaz as our specialist spinner after an impressive outing at Edgbaston and we believe he could be a factor at the Ageas Bowl.

“Colin’s been an integral member of our Test set-up for many years and it was great to see him return at Lord’s after a long injury lay-off. He’s a proven performer at the top level and we back him to do a job with the bat or the ball if called upon.

“Kane and BJ have certainly benefitted from their week of rest and rehabilitation and we expect them to be fit and available for the final.

“Playing in a World Cup Final is a really special occasion and I know the guys are looking forward to getting into their work here in Southampton.

“India are a world class outfit who possess match winners all through their line-up, so we’re under no illusion about how tough they will be to beat.”

Santner out so they're gonna go with Patel. Which means either they're gonna go with just 3 specialist seamers and CDG at 7...or play Jamieson at 7 and go with a 4+1 strong attack.

This is probably their playing X1

Latham, Conway, Williamson, Taylor, Nicholas, Watling, Grandhomme, Jamieson, Wagner, Southee, Boult.

Weather forecast is grim with a washout on day 1 likely. Still, India should play both Ashwin and Jadeja. Jadeja is a batsman first and foremost in these conditions. And even if wickets don't breakup and conditions stay damp, Wagner and Boult would create enough rough for Ashwin to be interested.

Lol people are dropping Matt Henry from their team? He would be the first name if I am picking NZ playing XI. A terrific bowler on these conditions.

I think Kohli's gonna pull a rabit out of his hat come friday. I can see a surprise Shardul selection in the final, and it will likely be at the cost of Ashwin. You heard it here first.
