What's new

Australia v South Africa | 1st Test | Perth | Nov 3-7, 2016 | Day 4

Starc has bowled really poor in 2nd innings.

Aussie commis are desperate, trying to justify why SAF shouldn't declare now? Why should they - 167 overs of the match left & there is no rain threat. They should bat another 25-30 overs; get the target close to 550, taking the chase to a hopeless situation & then go for all out attack. A target of 450 in 160 overs will only make then nervous if there is a big partnership. Either way, Aussies are not going to survive 140 overs; but they can score 450 against depleted attack.

If possible, keep batting till 1st hour drinks after lunch.

Not a great crowd for a Sunday. .may be aussies won't like to watch other teams dominating a test. ..all the talk of premiership of test cricket among 'whites' nullified?

Exactly! Get to 500 and then declare. Don't listen to their rubbish

Pathetic effort by Oz this morning.

This is reminiscent of Indian team and fast bowlers in particular giving up after 2 poor days.

Zero effort and trundling in.

De Kock is the new Gilchrist. Dare I say he will go down as an even better player...

Hope Marsh takes 5 to keep his spot for the next match.

Philander why are you pulling? This isn't how you bat in Australia. You need to drive it down the ground. :rosco

Pitch is a road but the Aussie bowlers are trundling and fielders are being sloppy. SA would be neither.

My agent Philander doing well. Knew this guy would come good. Seriously dedicated, and an underrated allrounder.

All aboard the Philander bandwagon for the naysayers :abd

Philander's batting is so underrated...playing so effortlessly

very very handy player down the order

Bro, you start claiming to have rated every player that does well.

Lol these Aussie commentators want du Plessis to be ultra aggressive and just declare. The game is South Africas. Let them do what they want. Let them wear down your trundlers

These guys just want the batsmen to attack all the time. Now these idiots are saying SA haven't scored quick enough and should've been at least 500 right now

I think when you are 58 not out and the bowlers have been bowling for 158 overs, the odd hook or pull is just fine!

Starc has been shown to be very ordinary by the Proteas. They have not been intimidated by him at all. They have prepared for his full pitched yorkers, his bouncers and made him bowl longer and longer spells.

The pitch has nothing for the bowlers it seems......the chase is going to be fancy

Why would they be intimidated? They face Rabada, Steyn, Morkel everyday.

Do you think starc is overrated in Test cricket? I think he is. I rate him extremely highly in ODIs and he will probably go down as ATG in the format but I don't think he is nearly as great in Tests. His fuller in swinging deliveries are not as difficult to keep out by competent batsmen as people think they are. Still a very good Test bowler

That's kinda ironic coming from yourself lol, but given my history is understandable.

But no sarcastic backing for my boy Philly, genuine backing from my part.

But I have always rated Philly, on the day 1 commentary thread people thought he'd get thrashed because he wasn't "tall enough" or "fast enough" yet here he is.

Been a fan since 2011.

He's rightly rated by Australians. That's all that matters. While he's obviously made great strides, he's far from a complete test bowler.

Ironic? How so? I can actually show my posts regarding players I rate or predictions I make.

Shane Warne and Taylor crying desperately in the commentary box LOL

Love SAF disintegrating theAUS psyche... make them grovel hahahahaa
loving this.

Shows them for preparing such flat decks.

He is very good in test too....avg something around 15 or 16 in last sl tour i guess

He may not belongto the league of ATG's but very effective bowler indeed

South Africa hell of a team outside SC. Now a days Aus is being trapped by their own flat track. No green top is making them vulnerable in their own backyard. Saw that in india series too.Hope to see green mamba again in Aus.

Green track in Perth? Lol. It would last half a day. The challenge here is bounce which is of course not alien to the Saffers. They're right at home.

Pitifully sad to see WACA flatter to deceive. The pace is gone, the carry non-existent. The two gentlemen in my DP will barely recognize this comatose surface.

On the other hand, loving the Saffers bloody-minded refusal to declare, and rightly so. Faf wouldn't want more than 100 overs of bowling for his depleted attack on this dead deck. Even 100 overs would be a burden for his 3-member attack, with the next test starting in a week's time.

You've spent enough time out there, should at least let Maharaj get his fifty

SAF didn't take the Aussie bait - batted exactly 3 overs less than what I expected. I was expecting a target of 550 in 140 overs - they have set 539 in 144.

Now, the Aussie commies should be happy - if AUS bats out 144 overs, they should win this match. :)

This aus team lacks players who are capable of playing a blockathon

Currentely most of them are free flowing stroke makers which is not going to work unless warner pulls out a blaze

Hes gone!! That runout has won the game for South Africa. Everyone thought he was in

That pickup and throw was stunning. Warner gets a dose of his own medicine

Smith really needs a knock atm to continue to justify his title as a future ATG.

Can't ask for a better situation than this. Even if Aus lose but he scores big, will be a testament to his ability. Assuming he does it with the best interest of the team at the back of his mind.

Kind of like the infamous "I hope Amla scores a ton but SAF still lose" type mindset :amla

Also have to say, impressive tail by Saffers this series. Maharaj looked solid out there, him and Philander compliment each other well.

England v SAF- who has the better tail?, maybe that should be my next blockbuster thread :kohli

So many young superbatters are disappointing me!

Ghar ka Kohli in England.

Root in Bangladesh.

KW in India.

Now Smith got out exactly when team needed him to hold on.

All above are atleast HTB but smith couldn't be that here.

It's gonna be a long summer and for Australia the Pakistanis can't come any sooner.
These days the CA's definition of a great summer is hosting the Indians (both sides score runs on flat pitches but Australia edges them out in the end) bookended by a short tour from West Indies at the beginning and Sri Lanka at the end of summer. Beat everyone at home and deliver a financial blockbuster.
So hoping that Pakista inflicts more pain.

SA would have had this in bag, had it not been for the untimely injury to Steyn, but now it is most likely going to be a draw.

Also, this is where someone like Kallis was a complete luxury and I'm sure, SA would have loved his services in this match.

Was that the spirit of Johnty Rhodes running out Warner? That was magic

likely a draw? one more wicket and they are genuinely into the aussie tail.

Their wk batsman is still to come.

If both Usman and Marsh see off the initial burst from Rabada and Philander, then there is no way SA are going to run through them.

Also, both Starc and Siddle can bat, plus Siddle actually has a FC century and Starc has hit some fifties.

South Africa will have to play their poorest brand of cricket in this test for Australia to avoid defeat. Forecasting a draw would not be based on logic, but gut feel.

How are they going to win, if they only have two bowlers?

So what country? How come you're such a big fan of sour Africa?

India

I become a fan bcoz they are the team that had all the aspects of a world champion except lady luck and personally most of the SA players has had a likeable factor which other team lacks n of course some serious talent too to make it simple you can not resist such a team and those players

Pretty much the same way they've taken wickets so far.

In the first innings or are you talking about this innings?

In this innings, Rabada has done all the damage and one run out, whilst Philander hasn't done much so far.

If they block out Rabada and keep Philander at this rate, then who else is going to pick up the wickets?
