This is why it always makes sense that international cricket produces better cricket than any T20 league.

Having to pick 7 local players in every single team puts a cap on the overall quality. A tournament of the best 11 players of each top country is far better than a league where, for example in the IPL, the top 70 Indian cricketers must play.

This is why the club-league model in a sport like football is so successful and high-quality, such restrictions are not there (to the same extent). It is (basically) just the best 11 players from across the globe that the club can afford. I feel T20 leagues can never overtake international until they relax such rules.

The absence of bowlers like Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Archer, Ngidi, Woakes did not help the matters either.

True, but they will only ever replace worser foreign players. It doesn't stop the likes of Vijaykumar Vyshak, Harshal Patel, Akash Singh, Tushar Deshpande, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, Mahipal Lomror, Suyash Prabhudessai playing, to name a few from this game.

I'm no expert on Indian cricket and unfortunately have never heard of most of the names I just mentioned, but I can't imagine they have a place among the world's elite T20 talent. This IMO is the limit to what will allow T20 leagues to overtake international

Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in their Indian Premier League match on Monday. Set an imposing target of 227, RCB looked on course until the departure of Glenn Maxwell (76 off 36 balls) and skipper Faf du Plessis (62 off 33) in quick succession. The duo added 126 runs for the third wicket to raise hopes of an RCB victory. Earlier, CSK scored 226 for six after being asked to bat first. Opener Devon Conway struck 83 off 45 deliveries and was involved in a 74-run partnership for the second wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 20 balls).

Later, Conway added 80 runs for the third wicket with Shivam Dube, who blazed away to a 27-ball 52 with the help of five sixes and two fours.

This season has been a big hit. Last year it was actually a bad season for IPL with news of decreasing viewership coming often and even the stadium attendance was lesser and somehow the competition looked a little dull.

This year has seen good viewership, one reason for that is Jio Cinema is steaming this absolutely free of cost. So just about anyone can simply download the app and watch the action. Return of Home and Away matches has also brought back a lot of excitement amongst the fans. Every game, almost, is seeing full capacity.

One thing that keeps annoying me though is that stupid Impact player rule. I desperately hope they get rid of it next season. I find it absolutely rubbish.

Have to agree. I have come to India specifically for the IPL. Wanted to see for myself what the IPL is all about. Have to say, it is a huge deal.

My observations so far:

IPL is the real deal. It is on par with Indian national cricket team, if not more in terms of support/following. The amount of people watching on tv is huge. With multiple ways to watch, they have blanketed the country with ease of access. The people are gobbling it up.

The $$$ being made from broadcast rights is only part of the story. The lesser discussed part is ticket sales and merchandise sales. The IPL is making a killing with merchandise sales - shirts, flags what not. People are just buying a boatload. Also, they are filling stadiums. So the turnstiles are ringing with $$$ as well.

With the broadcasting deal, merchandise, tickets, stadium advertising etc. I would say the IPL is taking in close to $1.5-$2 billion each year.

The fan support for teams is huge and passionate. I have so far travelled to four cities and each place I have come across passionate following of their local team. Be it in stadium or sports bars/restaurants. CSK fans are by far the biggest supporters/followers. By a country mile. Followed by RCB and MI. These fans don't just go for home games. They travel to away games as well.

The players also seem to be into this. The league's schedule I am sure is gruelling for the players. They are criss crossing the country for almost 3 months in addition to putting in the hard yards in practice, playing the match, media commitments. A lot is asked of them. Must be draining. But at the same time I am sure they are well looked after and made to feel comfortable by their franchises. The amount of people involved behind the scenes for each team is huge.

The biggest thing I have learnt is that people do take this cricket serious. The league is about cricket first. It has evolved into this over the years of tweaking I guess.

On the whole IPL seems to run very well and supported by the fans.

Shahbaz Ahmed is a waste of space in the team. I don't know on what basis he is there in the team and why he is batting up the order. He should stick to Ranji...

Royal Challengers Bangalore star Virat Kohli was fined 10 per cent of his match fees after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 encounter against Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday. According to the advisory issued by the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI), Kohli was found guilty of “breaching the IPL code of conduct” as RCB slumped to a eight-run loss against the four-time champions. "Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru," the advisory said.

"Mr. Kohli admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct," it added.

While it was not specifically mentioned in the advisory, the fine was most probably imposed due to Kohli's aggressive celebrations following the dismissal of CSK batter Shivam Dube. Dube played a quickfire knock of 52 from 26 balls and was dismissed by RCB fast bowler Wayne Parnell.

A similar fine was handed out to Mumbai Indians spinner Hrithik Shokeen after his celebrations and the subsequent on-field spat with Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Nitish Rana.

In the match on Monday, Devon Conway slammed 83 off 45 deliveries while Shivam Dube blazed away to a 27-ball 52 as CSK posted an imposing 226 for six after asked to bat first.

In reply, RCB ended at 218 for eight.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis (62 off 33 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (76 off 36) gave a scare to CSK till they were at the crease, sharing 126 runs for the third wicket to raise hopes of a famous win.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians, 25th Match

Sunrisers Hyderabad have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): Mayank Agarwal, Harry Brook, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram(c), Heinrich Klaasen(w), Abhishek Sharma, Washington Sundar, Marco Jansen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Markande, T Natarajan

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Cameron Green, Arjun Tendulkar, Nehal Wadhera, Hrithik Shokeen, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff

I don't remember when was the last time Rohit played an impactful T20 innings. The man has been a failure for a long period of time. But he is India's T20 captain. :))

MI have some very strong hitters still to come , I expect them to get 100 more at least in the last 9 overs , or something close.

This is why Kishan will amount for nothing. Too many risks and too many hail mary shots in his game. He can get out at any time. He needs to improve his hitting strategy if he wants to be a regular in the Indian team.

OUT

Jansen strikes again in the same over , critical over , this over can make the difference.

Tilak Verma should straight away play in Indian T20 team! We badly need a left-handed batsman!

MI have got a good total here , there bowlers have some thing to defend , Sunrisers need to play well to get this total.

Harry brook and Mayank to open , there we go , first six overs they have to get 60 runs at least

That's poor from umpire, if he has doubt he should let opposition team to use drs, it's a free gift for MI..

Mumbai are now serious contender for play offs , they have now won 3 consecutive games.

Well, Junior has some brains and he can execute those deliveries accurately at the death. He needs to up his pace. He is at Praveen Kumar level.

Yeah, yorkers seems to be good. Wide outside off. Hopefully he improves with the new bowl too and his batting is yet to be seen. Surely, being a Jnr Tendulkar, he must be having decent enough batting skills :)

MI have won third one on the bounce. SRH would be gutted as they lost several key moments.

Markram, Klaasen and Sundar's dismissals were so ill-timed. They started poorly as well. But recovered as Agarwal batted better. Markram looked in fine touch as well but got out.

Klaasen came in, brought the rate down but again perished when it seemed that SRH were looking to get ahead in the game. Jansen and Sundar played cameos but it needed to last a few more balls. Sadly that didn't happen for SRH.

Star India pacer Mohammed Siraj, who is currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 for the Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore, has reported a "corrupt approach" to BCCI's Anti Corruption Unit (ACU). Sources told NDTV that an unknown man, who is said to be a driver, sought inside information from Siraj on RCB. The BCCI has a strict code of conduct when it comes to corrupt approach. If a player or an official fail to report a corrupt approach, he can be sanctioned as well.

"It is acknowledged that the fight against corruption requires prompt reporting of all such approaches and any unnecessary delay in doing so may undermine the effectiveness with which the ACU BCCI and other relevant anti-corruption bodies can protect the integrity of the sport. It is acknowledged that the assessment of whether there had been an 'unnecessary delay' in each case will depend on its own
circumstances, but it is always unacceptable (and will therefore constitute 'unnecessary delay') for a Participant to wait until after the match in respect of which he/she was invited to engage in Corrupt Conduct before reporting that approach to the ACU BCCI," the BCCI's anti-corruption code says.

According to a report in the PTI, the unknown man wanted inside news about Siraj's team after losing a lot of money in a previous IPL game. The India pacer got a call and promptly reported the matter to ACU officials. "It wasn't a bookie who approached Siraj. It is a driver from Hyderabad who is addicted to betting on matches. He had lost huge money and approached Siraj for inside information.

"Siraj reported the approach immediately. The law enforcement authorities have nabbed the man. More details are being awaited," a senior BCCI source privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Since S Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested on spot fixing charges along with former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, the BCCI had strengthen its ACU work. Each team has a dedicated ACU official who stays in the same hotel and is there at the ground monitoring all the movements.

Also there is mandatory ACU workshop for players on dos and don'ts and if any player fails to report corrupt approach, then there are sanctions in place. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was suspended in 2021 as he didn't report a corrupt approach during his IPL stint in the previous season.

Things are not going well for the Delhi Capitals as the team has lost all five matches they have played in IPL 2023. Adding more worries to the DC camp, the cricket bats of skipper David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Yash Dhull and other cricket equipment worth 16 lakhs have been stolen from the camp.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the stuff vanished while the team travelled from Bengaluru to Delhi. The players learned about this development when they received kit bags in their rooms.

"All of them were shocked when they heard that everyone had lost something or the other from their kit bags. This is the first time such an incident has happened and the matter was soon raised to the logistics department, police and later at the airport. The investigation is on," a source in Delhi Capitals told Indian Express.

As per the report, 16 bats along with pads, shoes, thigh pads and gloves were stolen from Delhi Capitals' players kit bags. 3 bats belong to David Warner, 2 of Mitchell Marsh, 3 of Phil Salt and 5 of Yash Dhull.

Who does KL Rahul think he is taking singles in the powerplay? Knowingly without the intent of hitting boundaries??

I think Lucknow needs to fit in D Kock here in the XI somehow , he needs to open maybe , and bring Rahul down in the middle over.

Royals need 98 runs in 76 balls.

Royals do not need to take any risks here , the required rate is under control.

A nice reminder from the IPL that these 150 sort of games can also be really thrilling. Today was a much more even contest between ball and bat, as the pitch favoured the bowlers by being a bit two paced.

Rajasthan Royals started the chase nicely, as they got to 47 without losing a wicket at the end of the powerplay. Infact, they didn't lose a wicket till the 12th over, as both openers got into their thirties. But then LSG under Marcus Stoinis with the ball for the first time, and he proved to be the game changer.

Stoinis got the wickets of both set RR openers, sandwitched between an avoidable Samson run-out. With those three quick wickets, boundaries totally dried up as LSG began to exert pressure.

Shimron Hetmyer couldn't pull off any heroics this time, and Padikkal and Riyan Parag tried very hard at the end to get the game exciting, but perhaps ate up too many balls in trying to get set.

Naveen-ul-Haq was the standout bowler for LSG, who despite not picking a wicket was incredibly economical, conceding just 19 off his four overs. In the final over, Avesh held his nerve to get the visitors home, alas no winning return for the Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

There are over 100 indian players who have played in this IPL so far. How can we claim to have superior quality with so many local players? not even half of them will be international standard. I'm saying this because many fans (and some experts and former cricketers) claim that IPL is 'tougher' Or 'superior' than international cricket. That's rubbish.

Also these leagues, on one hand people claim that T20 leagues will replace international cricket except for ICC events and on the other hand most of these leagues project themselves as a 'platform' for developing young cricketers who can help that country do better internationally or as a platform to help develop cricket in the country. If there is no international cricket itself then what's the point of the above?

It's a good thing that local players are getting a chance.

Exactly my thoughts. No nation on the earth has that many talented local players that they could ever possibly make up a league higher quality than international cricket. The only way this league stuff can ever evolve past international is if they scrap this foreign player limit and go true free market.
