The ease of this run-chase has been extraordinary from KKR! You could argue that CSK were short of a par score, but you don't see their spinners being dominated in that fashion too often at Chepauk! Speaks volumes of how good Rinku Singh and Nitish Rana were.

Dhoni is saying dew made a big difference in his post-match interview which would've helped the duo. But after getting together at 33/3 with the team in trouble, they batted brilliantly as well for the highest fourth-wicket partnership at Chepauk in IPL history.

The run chase started turbulently for the visitors as Deepak Chahar rocked them with a three-fer early on. His variations and some smart field placements got rid of Gurbaz, Venky Iyer and Jason Roy. They were struggling at 46/3 after the powerplay, with potentially 12 overs of spin to follow on a sluggish pitch, and things didn't look too good. But Rinku started positively and Rana also turned it around after spending some time in the middle. And they made it look so easy out there.

That last ball no ball and then six game against SRH it just looked like RR wanted to lose that game so that everyone else remains alive in the table, and then this 59 collapse against RCB, it looked like RR wanted to improve RCB and MIs chances of qualifying.

They have been a very generous team RR.

With the league stage of IPL 2023 in its home stretch and the race for the playoffs intensifying, seven teams are in contention for two spots in the knockouts. While Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings have all but secured their entry into the playoffs, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings are at the forefront of a tight race to the finish.

With 14 points and two games still left, Mumbai (third) is most likely to secure a top-four finish among the seven contending teams. Following its two back-to-back losses at the start of the season, it looked like Mumbai was on course for repeating its 2022 season, when it ended at the bottom of the table with just four wins from 14 games. However, Rohit Sharma’s men have successfully turned their season on its head with seven wins in their last 10 games.

Here are some instances of when teams came back from the brink to secure qualification for the playoffs:

MUMBAI INDIANS - 2014

In one of the most spectacular run-chases in T20 cricket, Mumbai Indians chased down Rajasthan Royals’ 190-run target in 14.4 overs and pipped its opponent for the fourth playoffs spot. Aditya Tare launched a full toss from James Faulkner over deep square-leg for the winning runs, prompting Royals mentor Rahul Dravid to throw his cap to the ground in frustration. The win was Mumbai’s fourth in a row after it started its campaign with five consecutive defeats. Following the horror start, the Rohit Sharma-led side went on to win seven of its nine league games to qualify for the Eliminator. However, Mumbai’s juggernaut was stopped by Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS - 2015
After starting the campaign with five consecutive wins, Rajasthan Royals endured a five-match winless streak which included a defeat in the Super Over and two no results. With 12 points from 10 matches, Royals went on to win two of their last four league games to book the fourth spot on the points table and qualify for the playoffs. A narrow nine-run win against Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed Rajasthan’s berth in the playoffs. The win was set up by Shane Watson’s unbeaten 59-ball 104 which left KKR with 200 to get. A 71-run hammering at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator eventually ended Royals’ season.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD - 2019
With just six wins from their quota of 14 league games, Sunrisers Hyderabad is the only team to have qualifed for the playoffs with just 12 points. It pipped KKR and Punjab Kings on Net Run Rate to book the fourth spot in the standings. Sunrisers blew hot and cold throughout the tournament. They won three in a row after losing their first game and then lost three consecutive games to have six points at the halfway mark of the league stage. In the second half of the tournament, Sunrisers continued their inconsistent run, starting off with two back-to-back wins and then losing their last two games. They scraped through to the playoffs eventually, separated by just one point from Rajasthan Royals and RCB - the bottom two teams in the standings. The Kane Williamson-led side lost to Delhi Capitals by two wickets in the Eliminator and ended its topsy-turvy campaign.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE - 2020
Virat Kohli’s men had a season of two halves. They started off in commanding fashion, winning five of their first seven games and then eked out just two wins from their remaining league matches. They ended the league stage with four consecutive defeats and scrambled over the line in the playoffs race, edging past KKR on Net Run Rate. Playing its first knockout match since the 2016 final, RCB’s aspirations to get its hands on the elusive title were once again cut short by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS - 2021
In one of the most stunning turnarounds to a team’s campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders qualified for the playoffs after winning five of its last seven league stage matches. In the first seven, it had just two wins to show for. Having secured the fourth playoffs spot, and in the process going past Mumbai Indians on Net Run Rate, KKR continued its dream run in the knockouts. It beat Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, respectively, and booked its second IPL final against Chennai Super Kings. However, it failed to repeat the success of the 2012 final and fell short by 27 runs of a 193-run target.

Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 62nd Match

Sunrisers Hyderabad have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Gujarat Titans (Playing XI): Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha(w), Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya(c), David Miller, Dasun Shanaka, Rahul Tewatia, Mohit Sharma, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Noor Ahmad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram(c), Heinrich Klaasen(w), Abdul Samad, Sanvir Singh, Mayank Markande, Marco Jansen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Fazalhaq Farooqi, T Natarajan

Most foreign players in IPL have been a big failure in this IPL. Their performances and their price tags do not match at all. Its the younger generation of Indian players that have proven to be the stars so far.

I think only Saha is the player who is out of space in this GT Team! Otherwise it is a well-rounded side and most likely team to win in knockout games under pressure (Teams like KKR, RCB, RR, DD, etc, are the glory teams who perform only on less-pressure days & when everything falls in their place). Only threats to GT are MI & CSK in knockouts...

From next year, GT Needs to get rid of Saha and find out a new budding Indian wicket-keeper batsman OR an overseas keeper...

SRH 154/9 (20)

Gujarat Titans won by 34 runs

Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma starred as Gujarat Titans defeated SunRisers Hyderabad by 34 runs in Ahmedabad to confirm a playoff spot for themselves. With the win, GT made an entry into the Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023. Talking about the game, the Hardik Pandya-led side was invited to bat first. Gill scored his maiden IPL century (101 off 58) and guided the team to 188 for 9 in 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned figures of 5 for 30, playing a crucial role in restricting GT below 200. In reply, SRH were stopped at 154 for 9, thanks to four wickets each from Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma

Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians, 63rd Match

Mumbai Indians have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Deepak Hooda, Prerak Mankad, Krunal Pandya(c), Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Naveen-ul-Haq, Ravi Bishnoi, Swapnil Singh, Mohsin Khan

Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Hrithik Shokeen, Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff, Akash Madhwal

Chris Jordan is one lucky fellow. Somehow he shows up in all big leagues getting paid handsomely while being a mediocre cricketer all through his life.

Mumbai need 45 runs in 20 balls.

Match slipping away from MI , they need some lusty blows here

Royals might miss out of the playoffs. It could be a fight between MI and RCB for the final spot.

Quite an exhilarating victory for the Super Giants!

They have managed to down the four-time IPL champions! MI's openers got them off to a rollicking start in the run chase, but didn't the LSG bowlers things back in an emphatic style?

Rohit and Kishan added 90 runs for the opening wicket, but once Rohit departed, the momentum got back in LSG's favour. Kishan notched up a scintillating fifty, however, once he was dismissed, LSG grabbed back the momentum. SKY and Wadhera failed to get going, and although Tim David hit a few lustly blows, Lucknow's death bowling was impressive enough to strangle them eventually.

Good to see Moshin Khan is finding his feet again slowly but surely. Last season he was pretty much untouchable. His ER was like 5.73. After injury return he is still getting into rhythm.

Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals, 64th Match

Punjab Kings have won the toss and have opted to field

Phew what a game! The last four overs took everyone on a ride. Livingstone ensured the ride was full of thrills and chills. DC had almost thrown it away so much so that they could have lost this despite having 33 to defend in the last over. The first ball was a dot in the final over. But then a six and a four followed by a no-ball which was hit for a sixer.

16 was needed off the last three balls but Livingstone just couldn't connect. Earlier, Punjab leaked plenty of runs. They were set a mammoth target of 214. Punjab started off by giving away a maiden to Khaleel. Dhawan fell for a duck. And the start wasn't ideal. Taide and Livingstone got them back into the game but the rate was more than 17 per over going into the last five overs. Taide was retired out in a tactical move. But Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan and Sam Curran couldn't muster much.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 has reached its business end and the race for the playoff spots has also heated up with eight teams still in the fray for qualification. Gujarat Titans are the only side right now who has sealed their spot in the top four while Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants are placed favorably in the table. However, their position can be threatened by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians who still have a chance to reach the desired 16-point mark. Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are also mathematically in the race for the knockout stage but they will have to depend on other team's results for their fortune.

Right now, both CSK and LSG have 95.3 per cent chance of making the playoffs and they will automatically qualify if Sunrisers Hyderabad can beat RCB on Thursday. Mumbai has the best chance of becoming the fourth team to qualify with 60.9 percent but RCB is going to be a tough opposition.

The Faf du Plessis-led side has two matches in hand and a 30.7 percent chance of qualification.

Right now, both RR and PBKS have 6.3 per cent chance of making the playoffs while KKR are worse off at 5.2 per cent due to the inferior net run rate. However, the situation can change in the future.

Punjab Kings were dealt a massive blow as Delhi Capitals defeated them in a thriller. Right now, they can only reach 14 points and hope for a miracle when it comes to other results in the competition.

DOnt watch IPL,but i do check on the points table.

Gotta feel bad for RR. THey were table toppers by 9 -10 games and now they are almost out of the tournament

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 65th

Royal Challengers Bangalore have won the toss and have opted to field

Brook is extremely focused each ball. He really wants to make a mark given the price tag in one final match

That’s how you score a hundred in the 90s

Not what RiZwan did against NZ C

One hurdle cleared emphatically, just one more to go for RCB for a spot in the playoffs. They've smashed down what looked like a challenging target with ease in Hyderabad.

Hundred for Kohli, another brilliant knock from Faf, and job done! Heinrich Klaasen made a sensational hundred earlier in the evening, not one shot out of place, and everything leaving the bat like a rocket. But he ends up on the losing side.

The two RCB openers paced it brilliantly, going really hard in the powerplay to get ahead of the rate. It allowed them the luxury of a couple of overs to get a hang of how much help the spinners were getting. But after that, even they weren't spared. Kohli was on fire and some of the shots he played left even Faf in awe. Not sure how much of a factor the dew was tonight.

Faf said at the toss that the decision to bowl was partly because there was dew during their practice sessions. Whatever it was, it worked out brilliantly for RCB.

It's Gujarat Titans next at the Chinnaswamy and what a game that promises to be with a playoffs spot on the line for the hosts.

SRH bowling attack is a joke on the fans today. Any half decent batsman would bash those jokers with one arm tied.

More an experimental bowling line up although it had usual useless guys like Bhuvi. They sat out Markhende. Never gave chance to Umran. Tyagi never got enough chances. So he was rusty.

RR despite having match winners are finding themselves in this situation thanks to costly errors, strategies.

This current stadium where RR vs PBKS is playing had too many flies or whatever those are. I hope this stadium is not used during world cup.

Coming into the chase RR needed a win and needed to win it by 18.3 overs to topple RCB momentarily.

They haven't managed to chase it down in 18.3 overs but have managed to win a close game. Dhawan once again gambled with a spinner in the last over but again it hasn't helped him. He emptied his resources earlier than usual looking for wickets but that mean't the last over which was to be bowled by Chahar, had only 9 runs to play with.

The find for RR this season - Dhruv Jurel - managed to finish it off with a sixer.

Earlier in the chase, Buttler once again fell for a duck. But Jaiswal and Padikkal scored fifties to get the chase back on track. Hetmyer played the role of the catalyst in hastening the chase. And in the end, Jurel put the finishing touches. And with this loss, Punjab are officially out.

RCB has the best chance to make it to the Final 4. If Titans can defeat them with a big margin, then Royals can get in.
MI have the worst odds to get to Final 4. But they have an easier opponent in SRH.

Only the last two days of the IPL 2023 league phase remain, with three playoff spots still up for grabs. Only defending champions Gujarat Titans are assured of a top-two spot, while as many as six teams still have chance to enter the playoffs. MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings, Krunal Pandya's Lucknow Super Giants, Faf du Plessis' Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians, Sanju Samson's Rajasthan Royals and Nitish Rana's Kolkata Knight Riders are the six teams which still have a chance to enter the playoffs. Punjab Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals are already out of the playoffs race.

Here's the IPL 2023 Playoff Race Complete Scenario:

CSK (15 Points, 13 games, NRR +0.381) - To face DC on Saturday

The MS Dhoni-led side can seal a playoff berth with a win against DC on Saturday. However, they would want to win big to ensure a top-two finish as LSG are also on 15 points.

In case of a loss too, CSK can still remain in the top-4 provided match results of either LSG, RCB or MI go in their favour.

LSG (15 Points, 13 games, NRR +0.304) - To face KKR on Saturday

They have almost the same scenario as CSK. A win against KKR will see them through, a big win will catapult them to a top-two finish. Even in case of a loss, they can still go through provided match results of CSK, RCB or MI go in their favour.

RCB (14 Points, 13 games, NRR +0.180) - To face GT on Sunday

The big wins in the last two games have ensured that RCB have a good run-rate. A win against GT will ensure them a spot in the top-4, provided MI does not beat SRH by a humongous margin. Both matches are on Sunday and RCB's run-rate is much better than MI's.

They can finish in the top two as well, provided one among CSK or LSG lose their respective games and RCB beat GT by a big margin.

Even if they lose and MI lose too, RCB will go through due to their much better run-rate. There is another scenario that KKR (currently on 12 points) defeat LSG by a massive margin both RCB and MI lose. In that case, run-rate will play a big part and RCB have the better run-rate among the three.

MI (14 Points, 13 games, NRR -0.128) - To face SRH on Sunday

The five-time champions are in a tricky spot as they are placed sixth in the points table. However, they face the bottom-placed SRH in their last game. They have to win their last game and hope that one team out of CSK, LSG and RCB lose their respective last matches. That will see MI (on 16 points in case of a win vs SRH) enter top-4.

They have a chance to finish in the top-two as well provided CSK, LSG and RCB lose their games and the Rohit Sharma-led side win big.

RR (14 Points, 14 games, NRR +0.148)

They now have to depend on other teams' results - more specifically on RCB's and MI's last matches. They will need both teams to lose their respective games to have the long shot of entering the top 4. RCB must lose big for RR to enter top 4. KKR can also surpass them, but for that to happen KKR will need to defeat LSG by over 100 runs.

KKR (12 Points, 13 games, NRR -0.256) - To face LSG on Saturday

They not only must win against LSG by a very big margin to have a chance to enter the top-4 but also hope for other results to go their way. For KKR to qualify, both RCB and MI must lose by big margins.

A game that was decided as soon as Ruturaj and Conway got going in the first innings powerplay. Delhi Capials were always chasing the game, first to try and break the opening partnership, then to try and keep Jadeja and Dube quiet. In the chase, they lost Prithvi Shaw cheaply and then Deepak Chahar got two in two balls as Salt and Rossouw were dismissed early. David Warner held fort from one end, and struck a few neat blows against the CSK spinners.

In the past 3 years, we have seen a fresh influx of A-Grade trundlers into IPL. Almost all of them bowl between 125-135kmph and bowl predictable line. Good pace bowlers are injured and riding the bench collecting a fat paycheck.

Yes, Punjab and Delhi should go (OR they should get merged with Lucknow and form a team called North Giants or something). Hyderabad has a chance for resurgence, because they have won trophies before. Quality of teams is definitely getting diluted due to quantity of teams, especially in the bowling department! But it is good to see lots of promising young Indian Batsmen showing up this season. In fact they have kept this tournament competitive...

For instance Sunrisers team was always known for their bowling strength. But they lost many key bowlers including Rashid Khan. And also lost Warner.... And Kane Williamson who won them a trophy!

MI and RCB need to just win their matches (not worrying about NRR) if Lucknow slips today (looks more likely! KKR can chase today comfortably)

Meanwhile every chance for a rain washout tomorrow for RCB vs GT in Bangalore. This can help Lucknow as their NRR is superior to RCB...
