England [400 & 248] beat South Africa [183 & 274] by 191 runs in the 4th Test, win series 3-1

A win in the first Test in Centurion promised much, but South Africa succumbed to England's all-round brilliance thereafter and now stare at their second successive series defeat at home.

Overview

South Africa v England, 4th Test
ICC Test Championship
Wanderers, Johannesberg
Friday, 24 January – Tuesday, 28 January; 10:00am local, 08.00am GMT

South Africa's performances in the previous two Tests have been disappointing. Their batters, barring their vice-captain Quinton de Kock, have failed to deliver. The bowlers have shown flashes of brilliance, but lack of consistency helped England batsmen seize the advantage on each occasion. To add to their woes, they'll miss the services of their premier paceman Kagiso Rabada; Rabada has taken more wickets than anyone in the series so far, but will be out of the fourth Test after he was found guilty of breaching the the ICC Code of Conduct in Port Elizabeth.

The Proteas, having gone down to Sri Lanka last year, now face the prospect of back-to-back series defeats at home: something that hasn't happened since 1949-50. With series on the line and ICC World Test Championship points at stake, they have plenty to play for. The buzz around Vernon Philander's farewell and possibly the last Test appearance for their skipper at home might well add to the motivation.

England, meanwhile, have stamped their authority over the hosts. While Ben Stokes continues to be in a league of his own, youngsters Dom Sibley and Ollie Pope have blossomed with the bat to leave positive signs for the future.

The bowling unit too, despite the absence of the experienced James Anderson, has stepped up to the task. Stuart Broad, the leader of the pack, has 12 wickets in the series – two less than Rabada. In his previous outing at the Wanderers four years ago, his 6/17 had South Africa rattled on day three, powering his side to a series-clinching win.

A fit-again Jofra Archer could be back in the XI to make the most of the bouncy surface. The conditions might mean that despite his performance in the third Test, spinner Dom Bess will be the one to make way. England will also be keeping an eye on the fitness of pacer Mark Wood, who did well on his comeback from injury.

Remember the last time

The hosts ran through England's top four in Port Elizabeth, before Stokes and Pope combined for 203 runs for the fifth wicket, with both scoring hundreds. Sam Curran and Wood's consolidated the visitors' hold as Joe Root declared on 499/9. Bess, the off-spinner, then took over, picking up five to leave South Africa reeling at 109/5. De Kock's gritty 63 wasn't enough as they were forced to follow on.

South Africa succumbed to spin in their second innings too, with Root's part-time off-spin causing trouble. The last-wicket stand of 99 between Keshav Maharaj and Dane Paterson could only delay the inevitable, as England emerged victorious by an innings and 53 runs to take a 2-1 series lead.

What they said

Faf du Plessis, South Africa captain: "It's important for me as captain that we keep driving forward. Nothing has changed when it comes to that. From a performance point of view, yes, me and the team are feeling the pressure but we'll keep fighting."

Joe Root, England captain: "It's a great template for how we want to play our cricket moving forward, big first-innings score and drive the game forward from there. We've had four guys under 25 making hundreds or taking five-fors and that's a great place to be. We've adapted quickly so far. We learned our lesson very quickly from Centurion. It'll be very different in Jo'burg, different challenges for both batters and bowlers."

Conditions

Light rain is expected on the first two days, which might cause frequent stoppages. Wanderers has traditionally been a pace-friendly venue and it won't come as a surprise if both teams, despite the success of their spinners in Port Elizabeth, go with an all-seam attack.

Pitifully weak toss from Faf, he practically dropped the coin onto the floor. And of course he lost the toss again. England to bat first.

SA have fallen far but not far enough for us to beat them in SA :))

Eng should wrap up the series 3-1.

Hasn't he lost a record number of tosses or something? Think he's in double digits or am I thinking of someone else. Could explain why he's trying a new technique to try win one lol? Think he had someone come out for the toss as well earlier in the series?

Rooooooot on the other hand is great at the toss, winning 2/3 of them.

Bit surprised at the omission of Bess and Archer though.

Archer was due to play ahead of Woakes, but he is still injured.

Bess meanwhile is a tactical drop so they can play five seamers, and so it is a bit more of a controversial one.

Another useful opening partnership is developing here between Crawley and Sibley. Crawley will be looking to push Denly out of the side when Burns comes back.

Not looking that great for SA so far.

Haven't been following much, but is this how England's batting line up is going to look like going forward?

Almost.

Sibley will be rejoined by Burns at the top of the order when he has recovered from injury.

Crawley is opening for now, but he will battle with Denly for the number 3 spot when Burns is fit to play again.

Root 4, Stokes 5, Pope 6, Buttler 7, Curran 8 meanwhile is looking quite established now.

Seems as if Broad, Curran and Stokes will provide the backbone to the bowling attack, and in the remaining berths they will rotate the likes of Wood, Archer, Anderson, Leach and Bess (with Root as secondary spinner) depending on conditions / injuries / workloads.

Anderson isn't close to retiring yet? Figured this was his farewell series?

He has said that he wants to play on.

He took 7 wickets in a Test match just the other week, can’t blame him.

But he has so much longevity, passion and enthusiasm to carry on that it may eventually take a quiet word from the selectors to accelerate his retirement.

Thought the constant injuries would be the nudge to get him to retire. Seems to get injured after a game or two.

You'd probably be better off trying to convince him to retire and settling on an attack than to have Anderson come and go out of the team.

This South Africa attack look toothless,I won't be shocked if WestIndies beats them,The tour is in next six months in WestIndies.

The upcoming English summer seems to be a piece of cake for England. Anderson wouldn’t want to miss out on a big slice and get close to the 600 mark.

Nortje looking like Bung Lee out there.

2 overs for 16 runs, bowling quick and totally off line!

KP absolutely wetting himself on commentary over Sibley and Crawley. He is a cheerleader for England one day and then cruelly trolls us the next - which version of KP turns up depends on nothing more and nothing less than his personal mood. Just like his batting!

He is confused to cheer which team, the country where he has been born or the country where he played for.

Pitch not looking threatening as it usually does.
Might have movement after day 3.

Looks like another easy boring win for England.

Bat first and win is a simple formula

Ok I’ll concede to KP’s opinion on this occasion.

This is the best opening stand I’ve seen from an England team in a long, long time. It’s been an absolute joy to watch.

I think this was the cause of the bother when he was an England player. He needed a bit of praise and a bit of support, and sometimes gave it but he could damage team spirit too.

Anyway England are 92-0 and now Crawley has a fifty. This is good. I can see him dropping to #3 when Burns comes back. Denly needs runs to stay in the side.

Lol . South Africa look helpless. Just read some data that this Saffer side is the 3rd worst batting side in a series against England since 2010. Only Pakistan in 2010 and Lanka in '16 were worse. But I don't see any spark of inspiration from the bowling attack either. They have been completely outplayed by England .

First hundred opening partnership by England since the 2009 Ashes.

Sibley and Burns should be England's permanent Test openers. Crawley should be the reserve opener.

you have to feel sorry for alastir cook, he could not find a single opening partner after strauss for years,

and suddenly there are 3 potentially world class openers england have to chose from

Keaton Jennings was good but only in subcontinent.

I think there had to be a culture change in the County game. Guys have started coming through again who want to bat long.

Suddenly we have Pope, Sibley and Crawley, all aged 23 or less.

South Africa can’t bat, can’t bowl, can’t field.

Looking like another England win here, unless it rains.

In comes Denly, for another 28 off 94 balls before being caught in the gully.

He should play his natural game. He is not doing himself any favours by batting like this. He is already 34 and England wouldn't break a sweat to replace him with someone else.

Denly 1 off 14 balls and barely surviving out there. Doing a great job of killing the momentum of the innings.

Let's not get carried away, to be even considered " potential world class" category you have to perform over a period of time, in Fact right through out world cricket there's no top notch opener, Warner has the stats but he's a flat track bully

That’s much better Joe Denly, keep playing those shots lad. Far more positive, and the wheel of fortune will now favour you as well.

Denly gone for 27 (after being dropped twice). Thought he would get 28 but he didn’t even get that

denly took too much of the strike.

this is where root should try to get to be on strike when his partner is struggling

True, once burns come back I'd invest in Crawley for number 3 spot and stick with him

I would push Pope up to #4 and drop Root to #5 if he carries on as skipper. He averages 70 there. Admittedly coming in behind Bell or KP.

But #5 is such a perfect position for Stokes.

He’s been batting like a dream since he moved there.

Averaging 47 there from 17 tests.

It’s a good problem to have.

don't think denly wont be dropped for the sri lanka series.

his legspin has proven to be handy

Bah. Rare failure for Stokes.

Root and Pope at the crease now. Buttler in afterwards. England need a partnership from somewhere amongst these three just to settle things down.

On the plus side, I feel that England’s seamers will get a lot out of this pitch.

It quickens up on the 2nd day so English seamers should definitely get more out if this Saffer attack.

Er, what was going on there before Stokes walked up the tunnel? Seemed to be some kind of strongly-worded verbal altercation.

I have no faith in Buttler, but plenty in Pope.

Apparently Stokes gobbed off at a spectator and apologised.

I recorded the clip of him walking up the stairs and I think someone from the crowd riled him up as I think what he said was this "You want to take it outside? You 4-eyed c#£&!"

Wonder what the person would have said to make.him this angry?

THE Standard Bank Proteas rookie pace attack took a session to find their feet but then turned the game back their way in the second session on the opening day of the final Test match against England at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, on Friday.

On a day that was shortened first by rain and then by bad light to 54.2 overs during which England scored 192/4 the match could be said to be fairly evenly balanced although the visitors’ great strength throughout the series has been the ability for the remaining wickets to score substantial runs, boosted by a century by the likes of Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope.

The good news for the Proteas that Stokes is already back in the pavilion, but Joe Root and Pope are not and a lot will depend on some important strikes early on day two.

With Vernon Philander going into his final Test match with 222 wickets to his credit, he was backed up by four bowlers who had taken 18 Test wickets between them with one of them, Beuran Hendricks, being on debut, the 110th first-timer for the Proteas since unity in this format.

This was the result of Kagiso Rabada missing the match through suspension and the selectorial decision to leave out Kesh Maharaj and field an all-seam attack. It removed two bowlers who had taken more than 300 wickets between them. Both teams, in fact, opted for this all-seam policy with Dom Bess also sitting on the sidelines to make room for Chris Woakes.

Jofra Archer failed to come through his fitness test.

And the inexperience of the Protea attack showed in the first session on a perfect batting deck after Root had won the toss for the fourth time in a row. Dominic Sibley (44 off 93 balls, 7 fours) and Zak Crawley (a career best 66 off 112 balls 11 fours) helped themselves to exactly a century partnership off 30 overs in the opening session which took place between the re-adjusted lunch and tea intervals.

But the second session leading up to the close swung right back in South Africa’s favour as they took 4/92 in the remaining 24.2 overs.

Hendricks got the show going with his maiden Test cricket to have Sibley once again caught down the leg-side and the four wickets were shared around between the four frontline seamers.

Dane Paterson was the pick of the bunch and deserved better than his 1/39 in 13 overs. The Wanderers is the sort of surface that will always suit him, and he is learning very quickly what Test match cricket is all about.

He will never be the match of Philander as an all-rounder, but he can certainly fill the bowling role that Philander has occupied so flawlessly for so long.

Drop Denly, pick Crawley, push Pope up the order, drop Bowledstow and get the best keeper - Foakes.

I think Pope is the #3 we have missed since Trott.

Why unfix something which is fixed. I think Pope should continue at 6 for a couple more years and once he becomes the backbone of England team, then send him up the order.

Yes, get Foakes in as wicket keeper. I thought Bairstow might do well knowing he is the only keeper in the team and bats at 7. Dunno, England's call. Should prefer Foakes.

I find Denly decent enough, better options than what were tried earlier. He can fight with Crawley for no.3 spot.

Denly is not producing enough Ab Fan, and I am starting to think that Pope is already England’s best batsman.

Pope already looks like a top batsman in the making.

England flying this morning. 75 runs for no loss in the first hour, and the Saffers have no answers.

Three fifties in the top six, can anyone ton up?

66 runs in 14 overs today.

Pope averages 60 in his seven tests, not counting this innings.

How's the bowling been? I haven't followed at all to be honest. Thinking about cricket depresses me.

Aside from one productive and rapid spell from Nortje, the Saffer bowling has been poor. Pretorius can’t bowl.

Thoroughly deserved 5 Fer for nortje

Woakes has already top scored butler in his first innings this tour
