What's new

England v Pakistan | 1st Test | Lord's | Jul 14-18, 2016 | Day 1

That was poor wicket, most wickets had being give away wickets today

Dont know why Shafiq got double minded. But amazing knock by him though.

Hafeez, Shaan and AA can learn something.

Next 10 minutes are going to decide this match big time. Asad & YK pulled PAK similarly at New Lands & then YK lost concentration at dead end of the day.

Soft soft dismissal

He should be gutted

Golden opportunity to get on lords honor board missed

I don't think I'd have sent out Rahat. 282-4 could end up as 290-7 by the close.

Shafiq dismissal does take the gloss off the day a little bit. The ball has hardly swung today but at least the batsmen have given the bowlers a chance unlike on our last tour.

That won't happen, but I see it other way - Rahat has the capacity to blast few at the end. Now, his wicket'll be wasted (to night of tomorrow) in a dead dogged defence. I hate this concept of NWM - this has basically put Sarfu at 8 with the weakest tail in the game.

I am a big fan of nightwatchmen. It makes sense for NWM to face a few than a recognized batsmen walking into the dark trying to get his eye in against the new ball.

Rahat Ali:

What a poor choice for a Nightwatchman .

Not much other choice. Amir and Yasir (yasir supposedly) can bat a bit and Misbah will probably be thinking can provide good support for him and Sarfraz. Riaz on the other hand is more like a hitter he doesn't really block things out. So Rahat is the most dispensable. Plus give Amir and Yasir are our main bowlers, probably don't want to risk their injury.

Shafiq gives away wickets with second new ball, mostly soft like today... No wonder he has not being promoted to 3/4 yet... This is poor for his growth, otherwise he is technically better than the rest!!! - He must be kicking himself for yet again throwing away all the good work :(

Shafiq's dismissal means that match is in balance. If Shafiq and Misbah had remained not out going into tomorrow, I would have given the slight edge to Pakistan.

Dark? at 5:20 PM, in July, London?

It's sun out there - what's the guarantee that tomorrow, when 1st wicket fells, Sarfu won't come under gloomy sky with bowlers charged up over night? Ricihi Benaud didn't use NWM - that's ultimate for me.

Agree with this I prefer using a nightwatchman. Much better to lose Rahat, then sacrifice a proper batsman's potential to get a good score. Plus I seriously doubt Rahat would have added much to our total at no.11 anyway.

Just wish we had a better night watchman, we don't seem to have many suitable for that role. If we'd only lost a few wickets, Yasir would have been a better option I think, but with five wickets down we need the lower order batting to partner the remaining batsmen now.

Hahahaha Rahat. Why you tryna cut the last ball of the day? Yasir shouldve been sent in. Nevertheless an exciting day of Test cricket comes to an end. Excited for tomorrow

Rahat's a dispensable wicket anyway. Wahab and Yasir will provide more with the bat.

They had only one swing bowler, who has taken 4 wickets, imagine if they had jimmy :(

We need at least 350+ to have a good chance of winning. Misbah and Sarfraz will be key tomorrow.

Sarfraz and Misbah will have a big job ahead of them tomorrow, Pakistan need 400 at least on this wicket.

286-6 probably would have taken at the start of the day. 375 should be the target tomorrow.

Absorbing day of Test cricket. Pakistan's wounds were self-inflicted with nearly all wickets preventable (I'm looking at you Professor). Too many starts not being converted, Younis played himself in but got out cheaply.

We were in danger of being rolled over until Misbah and Shafiq's superb partnership, one I'll cherish for a long time.

Let's get to 350-400 tomorrow with hopefully a good knock from Sarfraz and a few more hits from Misbah.

Rahat is the worst batsman I have ever seen play for Pakistan along with Irfan

Dunno what the team management was thinking sending him

Guys like Wahab who have some base level batting ability are night watchman
