You could see batsman coming out of crease and throwing kitchen sink at them in later part of the careers (when cricket got bit fast). And that took swing out of the equation. And bowler tend to go for plenty due to that tactic.

Right, but you mentioned that both "struggled." I don't believe McGrath "struggled" and I'm not sure who can if you look at his extraordinary numbers right till the end of ODI/Test careers. Both in a WC/Ashes to boot.
