India [493/6d] beat Bangladesh [150 & 213] by an inns and 130 runs in the 1st Test, lead series 1-0

angladesh earned their first ever win in T20Is against India earlier this month. Can they similarly break the duck in the longest format, in their first game of the ICC World Test Championship?

Overview

India v Bangladesh
1st Test
Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore
Thursday, 14 November; 09:30am local time, 04:00am GMT

India have won each of their first five Tests in the World Test Championship and now have the opportunity to maintain their glorious run against the ninth-placed team in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings. The two-match Test series presents a great opportunity for the new opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal to establish themselves further, after having aggregated 869 runs between them in three Tests against South Africa last month.

While Ajinkya Rahane, too, seems to be back at his best, skipper Virat Kohli remains the biggest threat for the visitors, having scored a double ton in both the last head-to-head contests between these two sides in whites, in February 2017, and in the only Test played at the venue, in October 2016. The hosts are likely to persist with Wriddhiman Saha over Rishabh Pant with the wicket-keeping duties, while the in-form bowling unit presents a problem of plenty for Kohli.

As for the visitors, the absence of two of their senior most players in Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal creates a significant void, but they would seek inspiration from their new skipper Mominul Haque, who stood out as their best batsman last year, with 673 runs from 15 innings, including four hundreds. As was the case in that historic T20I win in Delhi, a lot of the onus would also fall on the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim, who averages 56.16 from four Tests against India.

The bowling appears to lack experience, more so in the spin department, and a lot would rely on Taijul Islam, the left-arm spinner, who reached the 100-wicket mark and was one of the few bright spots during the defeat to Afghanistan in Bangladesh's last Test in September. Can the visitors erase that and disrupt India's progress in the World Test Championship?

Remember the last time

India, riding on Virat Kohli's third Test double ton, and centuries from M Vijay and Wriddhiman Saha, amassed a mammoth 687/6 declared in the first innings, when these two teams last met in a Test match – a one-off affair in Hyderabad in January 2017. Bangladesh, powered by significant contributions from Shakib (82) and Mushfiqur (127) responded with a respectable 388, but still stood 299 behind India in the first innings.

The hosts extended their lead in the second outing, setting Bangladesh a mammoth 458-run target. Spin twins R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then exploited the slowed down surface on the final two days, snaring four wickets each to give India a comfortable 208-run win.

What they said

Mohammad Mithun, Bangladesh wicket-keeper: "In the past, no one gave us any chance when it comes to beating India in a T20, and that too in their own backyard. But our players had that belief. Whenever we play, whether it is difficult or easy opponent, we try to win the match. It happens sometimes and it doesn't on other occasions. We are disappointed that we could not win the last game despite creating chances, and at the same time, now we are looking forward to doing well in the Test series."

Ajinkya Rahane, India vice-captain: "I thought we played really well against South Africa, but as a side, we must stay in the present and we do not take any opponent lightly. Bangladesh are a very good team. They play as a unit. We focus on our strengths rather than thinking about opposition. With the Test championship, every match is important."

Conditions

The weather in Indore is expected to be clear and sunny for the next five days. The pitch could offer significant assistance to the slower bowlers as the game progresses, much like it did in the only Test played here, back in 2016, when spinners accounted for 22 of the 28 wickets in the match.

This match is going to end in 3 days,India at home are invincibles.

Wins a toss where India probably would have bowled first in any case:(. These days, Indian think tank is working in perfect coordination- what little chance we had was to win toss, bat first on an underprepared track and expect a decent first innings total - I guess, Eden track will also be more green than brown, taking toss out of equation.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first.

Bangladesh XI: 1 Imrul Kayes, 2 Shadman, 3 Mohammad Mithun, 4 Mominul Haque (capt), 5 Mushfiqur Rahim, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Liton Das, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Abu jayed, 11 Ebadot.

India XI: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammad Shami, 11 Umesh Yadav.

Bangladesh - 2/0 after 4 overs.

Not yet start though .... wait, they have scored one!!!! Hope the tactics isn't to bat out 450 overs for a draw.

I personally would be fine if they bat for 450 overs. Draw is like a win here.

Bangladesh - 8/0 after 5 overs.

Take it session by session.

Umesh has improved leaps and bounds just like Ishant.

Most of the Indian pacers - I haven't seen this level of skilled new ball bowling from India since may be Kapil in AUS 1991-92.

That round the wicket off-cutter is really difficult to master, I guess Sadman did well to touch it ..........

Mushfiq, being the best batsman in the team should have come out at no.4.

He's not going to keep the Wickets as well.

BD actually have three proper keepers in this match (Mithun, Liton, and Mushfiq). They all can keep.

Liton is playing as official keeper here.

It is almost like condition will be tough for the first hour or so. Then it will ease out. They have to ride this phase out.

This slow batting is reminding me of Test cricket from good old days (back when teams used to score slowly).

BD - 13/2 after 10 overs.

This is only the 2nd test played at this venue. NZ lost the first ever test played at this ground by a massive margin of 320-odd runs.

BD - 17/2 after 11 overs.

If they don't lose another wicket in this session, they have done well.

I think India will bat once here. They will try to score 600-700 and then put BD under the pump.

Let's see.

Just need to take session by session. The priority of this first session should be not to lose any more wickets, dont worry about runs at all. Start making some runs from second session as ball gets older and movement depreciates.

I think I am one of those rare guys who find these slow scoring test matches more exciting than those big bash t20s

Same here. Don't like those artificially induced run fests one bit where the only role bowlers play is of a bowling machine.

exactly, bowlers are basically treated like slaves in t20s lol. Anyway this partnership is probably the last hope for bangladesh in this innings

Ideal opposition to try out Shubman Gill.

Captain and coach will wait till away tours when the likes of Rohit fail and then they throw Gill to the wolves.

I really do not understand the merit in playing your best team against a weak opponent like BD.

yes, tbh, even if you played one of your top ranji sides against bangladesh, i think the ranji side would still have higher chance of winning

Monimul getting couple of fours, as I said, as ball gets older, it will be easier to bat. Sad to see already lost 3 wickets but with our best batsmen on crease, we just need to make sure no more wickets to fall before lunch. Also, I would like to point that Bangladesh made a great decision in making a player like monimul the test captain because he truly deserves it, as he is one of those few players who prioritise test cricket over money making throughb t20 leagues

If not for test championship, they would have played Gill..literally there is no place available for Gill, even if they jadeja vihari comes in straight away, so only place available is where Rohit occupied for now..

Kaptaan will not let go of his place in slip cordon despite almost dropping every other chance. :(

wow more i see is, more i am convinced Kohli should not stand anywhere close to slips. How can you put down such an easy catch.

BD shouldn't get bogged down. They should play positive cricket.

These two are scoring at a good pace.
