What's new

India v Australia | 1st Test | Pune | Feb 23-27, 2017 | Day 1

250 plus would be a decent score

Indian batsmen would have been worried only if it was 350+ (looked like in the morning). But now the lower order will make sure of at least 100+ lead to work out in the 2nd innings. Looks like 3-4 day test match, its going to be even tougher for Aussies in the 2nd innings, their best chance was today (say 300/4 or even 300/7) not sure why they kept run-rate low nothing is going to be achieved with that (even stubborn South Africans couldn't do much with that ploy!)

Yadav is making the difference here (a score between 300/5 and this!)

Remember the time when Australia declared at 9-down so they could have a crack at us for a couple of overs?

What an irony it would be if Umesh bags a 5 fer. Tomorrow's headlines in AUssie newspapers would be :
Aussies bundled for 220 on a raging turner, Umesh picks 5!!!

While I like Rahane a lot, I have to be honest:

On a turner against accurate bowlers, I wouldn't place my bets on him.

He hasn't improved in years. He maybe working on it but he hasn't improved.

When he performs on turners, then we can believe him.

That's fine but there seems to be a lot of blind faith on Karun though. Lets see if Rahane does well here.

garbage from Umesh. can't get no. 11 batsman despite having full over on him :srini

Nair is unproven yet inspite of that 300.

So not a comparison with him.

He is a better player of spin though.

Not sure about pace.

Starc seeing Yasir Shah in Jaḍeja. Bilal7

For the whole day, the entire commentary team has been blabbering away.

It won't be so painful if they weren't making completely untrue statements.

Starc definitely deserves to bat higher than Marsh brothers and Wade.

Starc has hit all the bowlers, except Ashwin. Time to take on him.:maqsood

I thought this was a rank turner and we are here huffing and puffing to get number 11 out.

Starc playing a gem.

Warnie dreaming of a victory.

All fun.

I have only watched the last half hour. Only some balls are spitting. Was that same the whole day?

Aus as expected have fared poorer to Eng on day 1 after winning toss. Thanks to Starc else it would have been 220 AO.

Let's see if Starc has actually helped Indian batsmen to start afresh tomorrow! (Late Evenings & Early Mornings could be the most difficult times to face Starc & co)

R u serious mate?

Australia have clearly outperformed England. Pitches against poms were absolutely belters whereas the wicket of today was nothing short of a spinner's paradise.

England would've been all out for 150 on tracks like this.

Never judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it, most wickets have fallen due to bad judgement and not to forget it was yadav who has got 4 wickets not ashwin or jadeja.

Disappointing day for India, however there is no reason India can not socre 500+ on this wicket which seems to be true inspite of offering turn and bounce

Your spinners are getting destroyed on their next tour to Australia.

Ashwin and jadeja will have to play on 1 leg and have their non bowling hand tied behind their back to give away 100-150 every game @ 5 rpo.

No they are spin track bullies. I don't understand the Indian obsession with these above average spinners when they have world class batsmen like kohli

Imo yadav has become a better bowler than Ashwin if he can keep this up. Ashwin spinner version of rohit sharma.

Wasn't Warner out on 1st review? Snicko showed a flat line but there was a clear deflection. Does anyone else agree?

With so much hoopla about pitches , People forget that at the end of the day Both teams bat on the SAME PITCH. I am quite confused as to why a pitch being a certain "Way" is seen to be beneficial or whatever it is. Each team bats on the same wicket - If it's bad for one , it would be bad for the other - If it's good for one , it's good for the other. For example - Any visiting team touring the subcontinent knows that there would be turning pitch - There are no hidden surprises - The team should be selected according to the conditions , it's quite simple. If it's a turner - If Australia still had Warne and McGill playing for them , It would be a even competition - The concern isn't the quality of the pitch but the lack of quality players for all conditions. If WACA is fast and furious , Any team visiting should have quality seamers - if they don't , don't blame the pitch for it.

Renshaw played well and so did Starc - It just shows how you apply yourself makes the difference - not how the pitch is or how much it turns. The pitch within one sessions did not change but Starc outplayed Smith - Does that mean the pitch changed wonders in 2 hours or is Starc a better Batsman than Smith ? Certainly not. It comes down to application and I really wish Starc goes on to score a century to show how it's done when you dig in - doesn't have to be pretty - has to be effective.
