Shami misses out. If England still don't win...........

Bhuvi at 10. That's got to be the longest batting lineup India have ever had.

Forgot this series is still going on.

I can't remember the last time there was some good competitive cricket.

India seems a bit complacent. If England have a good day today, they can dictate the match throughout the next 4 days. That's what happened in the first test.

India have looked pretty complacent throughout this series, think the thrashing if NZ did that.

I get the feeling that the players think that they have don't have anything to prove now they're number 1.

So English players will be spending their Christmas and New Years in India, feel it for them. Such a long tour, it gets boring after three tests, tests are boring altogether, when are odis starting? :afridi

They are taking a break in between for xmas, :kohli is not happy with that was saying he wants similar breaks for his team while touring abroad

India might end up in trouble if they don't get a couple of wickets soon.

Christmas is their biggest religious celebration. Kohli needs to stop being intolerant or ask BCCI to not invite England over in December.

Day 1 flat pitch. Let's see how much ENG pile up today. Another test for Indian bowlers and skipper.

Day by day, Virat is becoming defensive with his field placings. Partially I understand the tactics of 3-3-3 field placing on a turning wicket, but still I think it's the influence of Kumble - Azhar used to bowl same way keeping 3 catchers, 3 single stoppers & 3 men protection against long-hops.

But, this is not Azhar's batting line-up; at Wankhade, if Poms race way to 330/5 in day one, it'll be tough on Day 4 & 5.

Kohli is being too harsh on England, Cook has to be most well mannered captain that I have ever seen. Brother Kohli needs to sign a peace treaty.

First impressions on Jennings? Read on cricinfo his style is similar to trescothick, how accurate is that?

You were unhappy at we winning lots of tosses at home, this series we have lost toss thrice :(

Common yaar, get a couple of wickets before lunch.

I understand Kohli's fields but I don't know see why there is a necessity.

You have to choke runs in this pitch and build pressure.

When singles can be taken off good balls, it can be risky.

England should look all those players around globe with British blood roots, along with those having roots outside 1/2 generation back - whoever is coming looks gem.

Looks like Ducket's Test career is going to be bumpy - this kid & Ham are going to make a fantastic Test opening pair; even Cooki might drop to 4/5 in couple of years time.

Well done to Jennings, 50 on debut very well played. Him and Hameed the future for England.

Ash's last 2 overs spoiled his good work.

Looks like wicket is just around the corner.

India just gotta keep it tight. I think I can sense something happening.

Good batting by England till now.

It actually worked at Mohali & Rajkot (partially, IND avoided defeat despite batting 2nd - another 15 overs, you never know). But, ENG also has learned their lesson - they wasted a toss at Mohali by gifting casual wickets, despite being dropped few times, by unnecessary being ultra defensive; here they are scoring fast & that counter pressure actually is working - with this fielding, it's tough to get wicket in 1st day at Mumbai.

Field placing has been disappointing.

If leg slip prevents a sweep, you get a leg slip.

If mid off is gonna save singles, you get a mid off.

If that doesn't work, THEN you switch.

India will not lose any match in home under Kohli's captaincy. That I am very confident of. This(or rather every match) is going to be either India's win or a draw. I just want to see Kohli chasing(in 4th innings) in tests. Cook spoiled it in the 1st test by declaring late. Hoping for it in this match.

Jaddu is such a gun.

I expected something to happen.

This pitch is gonna get tougher I think.

England got easy 100 runs but the next 100 will be hard. Let's see.

lol this game won't be a draw. Either India wins or England wins.

I was reading arguments in Cook-YK thread. I think there is a tendency to low ball runs against spin & runs against IND in IND. YK's failure in outside Asia (that too at this age, till 2010, he was quite good, if not excellent) is pointed in evry way, but hardly anyone credits his fantastic batting in SRL & IND.

Apart from that useless hundred at Rajkot, Cook is in shambles this series, that too after having 5/6 lives.

Not watching the match. If only those 2 results are possible, then India will win.

Session 1 was relatively easy and gave us an indication that the pitch was flat.

But Ash was causing trouble but not enough trouble. Mostly due to flight and dip rather than turn.

Jayant was steady.

Towards the end of session 1, something was happening. Not extravagant turn but the rare ball was showing sign of spin and bounce.

Now Jaddu is introduced and has got turn right away (to dismiss Cook). Root was beaten too. Its not consistent but you get the feeling the pitch will get very hard to bat soon enough.

---

Of course, of late Indian pitches have been weird. They will start to look like they would something and then ease out. So I can't say for sure but odds are high that pitch will do something.

I think England will collapse once Jaddu and Ash attack post lunch.

Jaddu looks the most threatening today.

Good for us, hopefully we can Root and Bairstow cheaply.

England 109/1 (29 ov)
- Cook out for 46

This is a pitch where when you get it wrong, you will be taken for runs easily.

Jayant was so steady yet his economy reads 4.

His bowling was anything but bad.

Thanks. Will tune into the match post lunch. Hope one more wicket in this session.

And I haven't said that India is doing well because of the toss, during this series.

How do you think the English will bowl here and who will be the dangerman? Haven't watched the match at all.

Manish Pandey was called in place of Rahane just to sit out of playing XI
He had to quit the Ranji match on very first day and Karnataka has to play with 10 players!

That is ridiculous. Maharashtra didn't allow replacement as is still losing badly.

The pitch will turn when England bowls. Likely.

So Ali and Rashid will come into play. Add to that our tendency to gift Rashid random wickets against run of play and the fact that 4 pacers will keep try to exert some control tight....so it will be a fun contest.

There is pace and bounce in this pitch so English pacers will like it. But don't see them getting much swing or seam so I have a feeling Indians will score really fast on this pitch. And a lot will depend on how well English spinners bowl.

I don't agree with this field placing.

A perfectly good ball goes for 2 with a small push. Next ball goes for 1.

What the hell....lol.

Kohli oscillates between brilliant captaincy and some garbage captaincy. :(

Blame must go to Ashwin too who is ok with these lulloo fields.

Root had a good tour but hasn't really had any impactful knock.

His best knock in India is still that 80 odd in his very first inning back in 2012.

India's batting looks so fragile.

I dont back them to score 400 unless someone delivers a special.

Has Ash got back his SL tour accuracy?

If the ball lands on the off stump of leftie at good length consistently (even after drift), then he is accurate.

Noticed in session 1 but will have to wait and watch here.

Needs to get back the WI tour flight though.

Ha

This is first time ever I'm in the ground after watching cricket on television for 20 years. Best thing about it is taking it as ball by ball basic. No need to worry about result or match situation . It's really is fun.

Good to see crowd cheering opposition batsmen.

Has the wicket started to turn already? Just following online commentary.

If so, the brisk first session and Jennings' innings might already be the difference. Another year. Another overseas debutant in India getting a debut ton. India seems to be the best place for a player to debut.:narine

Why would you open up the leg side when for a bowler who is looking like taking a wicket almost every ball...

Yup.

Not consistent but when it does its sharp turn with bounce.

Moeen Ali almost got out like a million times by now. Jennings looks solid.

Yes. Watching cricket in the stadiums in India is a real experience. Few things compare to the atmosphere you get there.

Enjoy your day!

This is a very good innings in the context of the match then. England realise that this is a turner and are looking to play proactively getting quick runs before one ball comes with your name. They already have a solid platform to launch for a big total and things might get ugly when India come to bat. India need to pick up some quick wickets rather sooner, else this match will get decided in the England's first innings and it's off to Chennai then.

India will score at 4 rpo too.

Its that kind of pitch.

Let's see English pacers bowl dry here. If they manage, then they are amazing.

Toss is going to prove crucial here though.

England definately looks like favourite at this stage.

2 down for ~150 is pretty good for England, maybe they can finally make the toss count here.

Jennings could take the extra slot which rotated between the likes of Ballance, Buttler, Deckett etc.

Paul Reiffel is out of the field. Now they are deciding whether 3rd or 4th umpire replace Paul Reiffel.

I think we need to attack with spinners from both ends.

Pitch did odd stuff before but now its a bit more settled.

England would want to score big now while India has to keep it tight and prise out wickets.

If you stay, runs will flow kind of pitch.

With Rahane not there slips catching would be at worst and with Shami not there death bowling will suffer as well plus we lost the toss, hopefully Virat doesn't give up and keeps trying to fight.

Oh well done Mr Jennings!

This is a difficult tour for England but we have got a couple of new batters. I would go for:

Cook
Jennings
Hameed
Root (capt.)
Bairstow
Stokes
Moeen
Butler (w)

This is quite pathetic to pick a lifeless bowler like Bhuvenshwar Kumar, fast bowling will never succeed in India. The whole attitude of choosing Kumar over Varun Aaron shows the poor Indian mentality. I thought once Dhoni retired Kohli would push for genuine fast bowlers and looks like I was wrong..........One good news Moin Ali is looking solid at the crease so the wicket must be flat and good for batting :)
