Indian general election - April and May 2019 - Discussion Thread

Whatever man, I just saw short video/theme song for one of the communist parties in India. Heavy bass awesome beats.

He hasn’t left Amethi. He is contesting in both Amethi and Wayanad like Modi contested in 2014 (Varanasi and Baroda). Wayanad is a safe seat of Congress, Commies are not gonna win there.

Amethi is a gandhi family and congress bastion.

Modi in 2014 was fighting the LS elections for the first time.

As evident here, the BJP fans like their leader are quaking. You had a glory ride for 5 years. Now enjoy the next 10 years muttering under your breaths :))

It will take a colossal mess up from Rahul Gandhi for you guys to have any hope even after the next 10 years. This guy is gonna be PM for a long long time.

You seem to be an optimist. I don't think even Rahul would be that optimistic.

My prediction 2 weeks out:

BJP: 180 seats
Congress: 160 seats
Others: The rest

My prediction 2 weeks out:

Though I predict little more seat for BJP and less for Congress but I agree with you generally. All my sources are suggesting it will be a hung parliament and post poll alliance will determine who will be the PM.

If Congress comes to power again...they will loot the country again for 10 years (like UPA 1 and UPA 2). People's anger will grow....BJP will come back to power again in 2029...clean up the mess congress created only to get voted out again in 5 years. 2034....congress back again with new scams.

Rinse...repeat...rinse....repeat.....Indian politics for you.

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to be many steps ahead of Facebook’s initiatives to stay transparent about the funding of political advertising. A secretive organisation reportedly managing its campaign appears to have successfully worked around the social media platform’s ad transparency measures for months.

The Association of Billion Minds (ABM), the alleged “personal election unit” of BJP president Amit Shah, the right-hand man of prime minister Narendra Modi, has spawned widespread on-the-ground and digital operations, an investigative report published by HuffPost India yesterday (April 04) reveals.

ABM’s wide reach includes management of at least eight popular Facebook pages that have pumped big money into online ads for the BJP. This includes Bharat Ke Mann Ki Baat, which has over 300,000 likes and is the top spender on political Facebook ads so far in India, as well as Nation With Namo, which has over 1.1 million likes and laid out the third greatest political ad spend.

None of these eight Facebook pages, however, list ABM anywhere in the information about them. This is despite political ads now needing to include a disclaimer with contact information about who paid for them, according to the transparency initiative Facebook rolled out in India in recent months, ahead of the country’s general election.

ABM’s pages have also spread misinformation, such as doctored videos of opposition leaders that misrepresent what they say. This type of content makes ABM’s secretive nature all the more crucial. “This cluster of Facebook pages act as BJP mouthpieces, but allow the party to formally distance itself from the false information propagated by these pages,” HuffPost’s report reads.

What will Facebook do?
Facebook’s political ad transparency initiatives exist in the UK and the US as well and have been criticised widely there for how they could be circumvented. A Vice News piece last year showed that its reporter successfully purchased ads that said they were paid for by the terrorist group ISIS. The Atlantic last October also reported how a shadowy company had simply used a surrogate buyer to hide its tracks.

Hence, the key question now is: what will Facebook do in the wake of the HuffPost report? Will it insist that pages supposedly linked to ABM undergo verification again? Will it revamp its ad transparency policies to make them more stringent? Quartz has sent Facebook a detailed questionnaire and will update the piece when it responds.

If Facebook receives evidence of the link to ABM, it could even decide to remove the pages for their engagement in “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”—entities working together to misrepresent themselves in order to spread messaging. Earlier this week, Facebook removed over 1,000 pages from India and Pakistan for engaging in such behaviour, including many political pages by the BJP and the leading opposition Indian National Congress.

“If a company is running Facebook pages while denying that it’s doing so, that would be inauthentic behaviour by the pages,” Ben Nimmo, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, told Quartz. “It’s worth asking what accounts were being used to manage the pages, because that would indicate if there was a digital trail—were they fake accounts, or the accounts of company employees?”

Who usually wins in Punjab and who is expected to win this time?

Yogiji called deshdrohi by senior BJP leader :)))

Since the Congress are still in the abyss, the BJP's biggest enemy this election are the BJP itself.

The Vajpayee generation of leaders are being thwarted by the Yogi Adityanath era ones.

And who is that nincompoop who they have nominated for Bangalore south? The last time was a stellar contest between Ananth Kumar (BJP) vs Nandan Nilekani (Congress). Most voted for Kumar because of the Modi wave - a worthy candidate, but probably feeling sad that they couldn't vote for Nilekani as well.

This time we are presented with this little Chowkidar:

India is in the grip of election fever, with 900 million registered voters preparing to go to the polls.

The general election will be the world's largest democratic exercise, with voting beginning on 11 April.

Voters are electing lawmakers for the 545-member lower house of parliament, or Lok Sabha.

The country is so large that voting will take place in seven phases over five weeks, with initial results expected on 23 May.

In 2014, he swept to power with a historic win - breaking the Congress Party's grip on India.

This year, the strongman leader, who refers to himself as the country's watchman and protector, claims he will snatch an even bigger majority.

Supporters of Narendra Modi say he is one of the strongest leaders the country has had
For the party faithful, he's the only man for the job.

"He's one of the strongest leaders which we have ever witnessed", gushes supporter Amit Parashar, "[He] can take our country to greater heights."

However, critics have expressed concern - saying that while Mr Modi's nationalist mantra empowers the Hindu majority, it is isolating minorities.

The opposition Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, claims hatred and lynch mobs have spread unchallenged under Mr Modi.

Harsh Mander, director of the Centre for Equity Studies, agrees - saying their research has found the majority of vigilante attacks on Muslims by Hindu mobs in the name of protecting cows have happened in the last five years.

Cows are sacred to Hindus and one of the prime minister's signature policies has been protecting them.

While Mr Modi has publicly denounced the vigilante violence, Mr Mander claims perpetrators often act with impunity.

"I don't think India has ever been as bitterly divided," he told Sky News. "The extent to which hate has not just been normalised but it's been legitimised and validated in a way that we have never seen before."

In 2017, 55-year-old Muslim Pehlu Khan and his sons were beaten by a mob for trading cows.

They were returning from a market when a gang attacked them. Pehlu died of his injuries.

His son Irshad told Sky News: "At the beginning there were about nine or 10 people but then more joined in to beat us up. They just kept hitting us.

"Their intentions were clear: these are Muslims, these mullahs will never change until they are dead. Kill them and throw petrol or diesel on them and burn them."

The others said they only escaped alive because the police intervened.

Two years on, the family is still fighting for justice and Irshad fears violence against Muslims will rise if Mr Modi wins again.

"We are worried that if the BJP government returns, the situation will get worse not better," he said. "Even during the elections this is getting worse and it will not stop, there won't be any peace."

Despite these fears, Mr Modi will be hard to beat.

While sectarian violence has risen and unemployment is high, the economy has grown and the prime minister's campaign has been boosted by nationalist zeal sparked by the recent flare up in tensions with neighbouring Pakistan.

If he wins, Mr Modi is promising a "new India" and going into the 2019 elections, the perennially popular politician remains the favourite.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Congress manifesto stands more for Pakistan than for India, says PM Narendra Modi

Congress has promised in its manifesto that it will not allow any change in Article 370 and will review the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) if voted to power.

Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a jibe at Congress for its manifesto, alleging that it seems to be blowing Pakistan's trumpet more than that of India. "For the first time, India carried out attacks across the border against the terrorist hotbeds. But Congress is asking for proof. People trust the armed forces but not Congress leaders. Congress is taking forward the propaganda which Pakistan want to spread across the world," he said at a rally here.

"Congress' fraud document seems to be blowing the trumpet for Pakistan more than that of India. Congress has said that nobody can touch Article 370 (special status for Jammu and Kashmir) of the Constitution. The government in Pakistan has also been taking the same stand. What is the connection?" Modi asked.

Congress has promised in its manifesto that it will not allow any change in Article 370 and will review the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) if voted to power.

Modi made a veiled attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying, "Naamdar claims that they will make the northeast a hub of manufacturing industry. They are experts in manufacturing abuses and lies."

"If Congress really wanted to develop the northeastern region, it should have developed the infrastructure and promoted sports. Now, all the capitals of the northeastern states are connected by railway lines," the Prime Minister said.

Highlighting the works of the BJP-led government, Modi said, "Through BPOs and the Mudra Yojana, we have created job opportunities for the youth of the northeast. One lakh youth have been given loans under the Mudra Yojna without any guarantee."

"Around 1.25 lakh farmers of Manipur have started receiving financial assistance from the Centre. We changed the law around bamboo and now people can grow and sell bamboo," he said. Manipur will go to polls in the two phases on April 11 and April 18 for its two Lok Sabha seats.

So disappointing that the election campaign is going down this route.

The Congress has a lot of faults but to accuse them of this? Really?

Poor soul thinks politicians actually care about dead soldiers. Politicians are in for power and the wealth it brings. Why should politicians not use dead soldiers when it increases their chance of winning the election ? Politicians clearly don't care about the country or its people why should they stop at dead soldiers.

City based educated youths are still minority, besides most youths don't really vote. This is to cater to the ones that actually do. in 20 years, you won't see this kind of absurd claims, but for now this will do. Voting and winning the election is the only thing that matters.

As per bhaktjans, he is touted to be a great choice to contest elections. There can't be more gullible creatures than bhaktjans.

And what the hell with this, want to stop Modi? Does he want dictatorship in India where no opposition exists and bhaktjans can go their merry ways?

And lol at new and robust India. We've seen how new and robust India has become in last 5 years.

Modi has become really really desperate. Never ever have we witnessed this kind of pathetic and polarizing election campaign especially by PM of India. That he is still deified by bhaktjans will remain mystery.

So bjp promises to speed up defence procurement, give free hand to army in dealing with terrorists and border issues. Stop illegal immigration in eastern india. Good.

I wonder what "giving Army a free hand" entails given AFSPA already exists :13:

Defence budget hasn't changed much. Only difference is that it is being spent to purchase the arms where earlier it was pocketed by Congress mafias.

A really simple guide to India’s general election

It is an election like no other. Those eligible to vote in India’s upcoming polls represent more than 10% of the world’s population and they will take part in the largest democratic exercise in history.

India held its first elections in 1951-2 after the country gained independence from the UK in 1947. This year there are more than 900 million eligible voters – nearly four times as many as the United States – the next largest democracy.

Voters will choose representatives for the Indian parliament, and in turn decide if Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi will run the country for another five years.

What is at stake?
Whoever wins these elections and forms a government will control the destiny of the world's largest democracy.

While they are in charge, India’s economy is likely to overtake the UK’s and become the world’s fifth-largest.

Its population meanwhile - at more than 1.34bn people - is predicted to soon surpass China’s 1.39bn.

Hundreds of millions of Indians have escaped poverty since the turn of the millennium but huge challenges remain.

Unemployment is a major concern and is especially high among young people.

Millions of farmers are angry about low crop prices.

How the nuclear-armed country engages with the outside world – and manages a tricky relationship with its neighbour Pakistan – is also of immense importance to international security.

Who is being elected?
Indians are voting for members of parliament and the job of prime minister tends to go to the leader of the party or coalition with most seats. The current PM is Narendra Modi.

His main rival is opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.

Parliament has two houses: the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

The lower house – Lok Sabha – is the one to watch.

It has 543 elected seats and any party or coalition needs a minimum of 272 MPs to form a government.

At the last election in 2014, Mr Modi’s BJP won 282 seats.

Mr Gandhi’s Congress Party only took 44 seats in 2014 – down from 206 in 2009.

Why does voting take so long?
Because of the enormous number of election officials and security personnel involved, voting will take place in seven stages between 11 April and 19 May.

Different states will vote at different times.

Votes will be counted on 23 May and results are expected on the same day.

Who will win?
This election is being seen as a referendum on Mr Modi, a polarising figure adored by many but also accused of stoking divisions between India’s Hindu majority and the country’s 200 million Muslims.

Until a few months ago, Mr Modi and his BJP party were seen as the overwhelming favourites. But the loss of key states in December’s regional elections injected a sense of serious competition into the national vote.

Analysts are divided on whether Mr Modi will be able to win a simple majority again.

A recent escalation of tensions with Pakistan has given the BJP a new and popular issue to campaign on.

It will be hoping that a focus on patriotism will help the party to get past the serious challenge mounted by powerful regional parties and Congress.

That's an old article by a known BJP fan paper.

Is the Head of a Math lying? Or is he some anti-national stooge.

Dude, I'm not personally attacking you, but just take a step back and think. Have you ever come across this many rumblings from ex leaders/retired leaders against a sitting PM. It seems unprecedented in Indian politics across parties. Even from a BJP loyalist viewpoint, there must be something seriously wrong that Modi-Shah have been doing for so many within to be providing divergent views.

What makes someone like Arun Shourie lose his mind when talking about Modi-Shah.

TOI is not a bjp fan paper. But you know what the wire is. Dont you? They openly threaten govt officials that once govt changes they will be punished. Go check the twitter handle of M K Venu.

Siddhartha Vardarajan the founder and editor of wire was fired from The Hindu for violating the press council act. He is a US citizen and hence couldnot be the editor of a Indian news paper. It was the bjp that complained.

I dont believe a word that comes out of these online websites like wire or print or quint etc. Ever wondered why did they suddenly crop up after 2014?

Do you know who were the worst performing ministers in Vajpayee govt? Shourie, yashwant sinha, Shatrughan Sinha etc. They all were sidelined post 2009.

Modi-Shah are not part of the Lutyens elite political group. They come from humble beginnings, climbing up the ladder of the organisation. They do not care about the Gandhi Family or the so called nehruvian philosophy. They do not subscribe to the ecosystem of the congress. Hence the problems.

Worst performing ministers? Lol, how much sense does this make? If those 3 were worst performing minsters of NDA govt, what about these?

Rajnath Singh
Arun Jaitley
Nirmala
Prakash Javdekar
Smriti Irani
Rathore
Prabhu
Uma Bharti
Paswan
Harsimrat

And above all, Modi himself.

.....list is endless.

If those 3 were incompetent, what about the above? Why aren't they sidelined? Let me enlighten you. Thats because they know how to boot lick Modi, a la old congress style.

Nadda has been accused of financial irregularities by an whistle blower IAS officer, Chaturvedi. Despite that there was not even an inquiry initiated against him during last 5 years.

Where is Harshvardhan in the incompetence stakes?

He had stated that no death certificate has the cause of death as pollution.

In the same interview, he had also said that the Delhi smog was not a reason to panic over, and that his “benchmark for an emergency" situation would be one like the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984.

"Let me clarify that I have never said that we shouldn't be bothered. All I am saying is that there is no need to frighten people. There is only a need to educate people and tell them about the routine precautions that they have to take. And I am sure that with routine precautions, people will be able to take care of it. I am not saying someone with lung problems should not go to the hospital," he had said.

lol at BJP ministers. They've to be most illiterate ministers ever. And yet, none of them are sidelined.

Pathetic attempt by him to garner some cheap votes at the altar of warding off Pakistan. Not surprising in the least though.

Chandan Mitra is no longer a BJP man, he defected to the Trinamool Congress last year.

The BJP may well struggle and end up with 180-200 seats however there is no evidence to suggest that the congress will even pass 100 seats. Their campaign has been awful so far.

If they are relying on campaigners like this then you know they’re in trouble.

Is there any relistic chance that BJP can lose this election? Doesnt seem likely to me.

Ghost of Vadra has been created by BJP. If he is as big a crook as he is touted to be, why hasn't he been charged as yet. After all, BJP had govts for 5 yrs in Centre, Haryana and Rajasthan where Vadra has bought properties.

He is just an excuse for their incompetence and own crookedness.

Isn’t that the modus operandi of all Indian political parties - moan and moan about something yet when in power they do very little about the said issue. For example, Congress led governments have done next to nothing about domestic right wing extremism. The BJP have done next to nothing about things like the 1984 Sikh genocide yet continue to use it as an election point.

I dont believe a word that comes out of these online websites like wire or print or quint etc. Ever wondered why did they suddenly crop up after 2014?

Quint has a strong Congress leaning. Agreed.

The emergence of all these alt news sources are a reflection of the times and the government's buying out/intimidation of pretty much all the mainstream media.

Bollywood plays starring role in Modi's re-election bid

MUMBAI/BENGALURU (Reuters) - Early this year, a dozen of Bollywood’s biggest names took a private jet from India’s film capital of Mumbai to New Delhi for a private audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Subsequently, actor Ranveer Singh, who has nearly 22 million followers on Instagram, posted a smiling picture of himself hugging Modi, with a caption expressing his “joy” at the encounter, drawing more than 3 million likes.

Bollywood is playing a lead role in Modi’s campaign for a second term, endorsing him on-screen and off, in both subtle and obvious ways, in a marked shift from the more transactional relationship Indian film stars previously had with politicians.

Modi asked filmmakers and stars to “talk about patriotism, and Indian culture and values,” in their films, said film producer Mahaveer Jain, who organised the Jan. 10 meeting.

“He recognizes the soft power of Bollywood, and the impact it can have.”

As people younger than 35 form nearly two-thirds of India’s population of about 1.3 billion, with more than 15 million voting for the first time in general elections that begin on Thursday, approval from the leading stars could be key.

Modi swept to victory in 2014, but this time, rural distress and concern about a lack of jobs threaten to make it tougher for his party to triumph in elections spread over a month, with counting set for May 23.

In recent months, Modi has met privately at least four times with several of Bollywood’s biggest personalities, most of whom have posted selfies with him on social media, accompanied by glowing captions.

“Together we would love to inspire and ignite positive changes toward a transformative India,” read a caption on director Karan Johar’s Instagram post of a star-studded group selfie with Modi that won more than 1 million likes. He thanked the government for cutting taxes on movie tickets.

“There is perhaps no politician in the history of Indian politics who has been able to create a celebrity outreach program like Narendra Modi,” said Joyojeet Pal, a University of Michigan professor who has analyzed Modi’s social media feed since 2009.

A BJP spokesman did not respond to Reuters’ repeated requests for comment.

Bollywood’s move to largely embrace Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party contrasts with the United States, where Hollywood has typically taken up liberal-left causes and backed the Democrats, more lately lampooning President Donald Trump and the right-wing Republican Party.

BIGGEST HIT

Beyond social media, Bollywood has released three movies with lead actors in prime ministerial roles this year.

One, “Uri – The Surgical Strike” proved the year’s biggest hit, pulling in a gross of more than $35 million at the Indian box office.

In speeches, Modi and his ministers have repeatedly evoked the film, which indirectly lauds the prime minister and his national security adviser for planning a 2016 attack that India says hit terrorist camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

But it has no political leanings, says director Aditya Dhar. “My film is a dedication to the Indian Army,” Dhar told Reuters in January. “It is about the sacrifices they make for their countrymen.”

The film released the same weekend as “The Accidental Prime Minister”, based on an unauthorized biography of Modi’s predecessor, Manmohan Singh.

That film, which did not succeed at the box office, projected open contempt for Singh, painting him as ineffective and forced to bow to the whims of the Gandhi family, which heads India’s main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.

“You can clearly say some of these films are propaganda films,” said influential film critic Rajeev Masand. “There is no confusion on the agenda there.”

A biopic titled “PM Narendra Modi” is set for release on Thursday, when the first votes are to be cast in the seven-phase election, and it follows a 10-episode web series on Modi’s life.

“HUGE INFLUENCER”

Not everyone is jumping on the Modi bandwagon.

More than 800 theatre artists, actors and film makers urged voters not to back Modi last week, but barring a few, most were independent and documentary film makers lacking the reach of Bollywood’s A-listers.

“The man portrayed as the saviour of the nation five years ago has destroyed the livelihoods of millions through his policies,” they said on the website Artists Unite.

“We appeal to our fellow citizens to vote for love and compassion, for equality and social justice, and to defeat the forces of darkness and barbarism.”

The main opposition Congress party has also sought to woo Bollywood and a separate source said filmmakers were invited to meet its leader, Rahul Gandhi.

The agenda for that meeting is unknown and Gandhi’s office did not respond to calls seeking comment.

“My Name is RaGa,” a less publicized movie about Gandhi, is also set for release this month.

Traditionally, Bollywood stars functioned as crowd-pullers at the odd election rally, often for remuneration. Though many later took the plunge into politics, no political party has deployed them as subliminal brand ambassadors before.

“This is alarming because Indian cinema is a huge influencer,” said Sandeep Chatterjee, professor of direction and screenplay at the Film and Television Institute of India.

“One can say people have a right to decide what they watch, but you cannot discount the influence Indian cinema has on people at large, especially young people.”

India election 2019: Voting begins in world's largest election

Indians have begun voting in the first phase of a general election that is being seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tens of millions of Indians across 20 states and union territories will cast their votes in 91 constituencies.

The seven-phase vote to elect a new lower house of parliament will continue until 19 May. Counting day is 23 May.

With 900 million eligible voters across the country, this is the largest election ever seen.

Mr Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a historic landslide in the last elections in 2014.

The Lok Sabha, or lower house of parliament has 543 elected seats and any party or coalition needs a minimum of 272 MPs to form a government.

The BJP has been campaigning to retain a commanding majority, but faces challenges from strong regional parties and a resurgent Congress party, led by Rahul Gandhi.

Mr Gandhi's father, grandmother and great-grandfather are all former Indian prime ministers. His sister, Priyanka Gandhi, formally joined politics in January.

Hundreds of voters began to queue up outside polling centres early Thursday morning. In the north-eastern state of Assam, lines of voters began forming almost an hour before voting officially began.

Voters at one polling booth in Baraut - in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh - got a royal welcome with people were greeted by drums and a shower of flower petals.

But in Chhattisgarh state, suspected Maoists detonated an IED device near a polling booth in the one of the constituencies at around 04:00 local time (23:30 BST) - but no injuries were reported.

The mineral-rich state has witnessed an armed conflict for more than three decades and attacks by Maoist rebels on security forces are common. On Tuesday a state lawmaker was killed in a suspected rebel attack.

Some observers have billed this as the most important election in decades and the tone of the campaign has been acrimonious.

Mr Modi, who stakes his claim to lead India on a tough image, remains the governing BJP's main vote-getter. But critics say his promises of economic growth and job creation haven't met expectations and India has become more religiously polarised under his leadership.

How big is this election?

It is mind-bogglingly vast - about 900 million people above the age of 18 will be eligible to cast their ballots at one million polling stations. At the last election, vote turn-out was around 66%.

No voter is meant to have to travel more than 2km to reach a polling station. Because of the enormous number of election officials and security personnel involved, voting will take place in seven stages between 11 April and 19 May.

India's historic first election in 1951-52 took three months to complete. Between 1962 and 1989, elections were completed in four to 10 days. The four-day elections in 1980 were the country's shortest ever.

Which states are headed to the polls?
On Thursday, the following states will vote, with polling stations opening from 07:00 local time (02:30 BST):

Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar islands and Lakshadweep.

Polling in some states, such as Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland, will conclude in one day. But other states, such as Uttar Pradesh, will hold polls in several phases.

What are the key issues?
Hundreds of millions of Indians have escaped poverty since the turn of the millennium but huge challenges remain.

Under Mr Modi, the world's sixth-largest economy appears to have lost some of its momentum. Although annual GDP growth has hovered at around 7%, unemployment is a major concern.

Mr Modi's government has been accused of hiding uncomfortable jobs data. In fact, a leaked government report suggests that the unemployment rate is the highest it has been since the 1970s.

Farm incomes have also stagnated because of a crop glut and declining commodity prices, which has left farmers saddled with debt.

Unsurprisingly both parties have targeted the rural poor in their campaign manifestos. The BJP has promised a slew of welfare schemes to India's farmers, while Congress has promised a minimum income scheme for the country's 50 million poorest families.

National security is also in the spotlight this election after a suicide attack by a Pakistan-based militant group killed at least 40 paramilitary police in Indian-administered Kashmir in February. India then carried out unprecedented air strikes in Pakistan.

Since then, the BJP has made national security a key plank in its campaign.

NEW DELHI: Daylong Congress jibes about the Supreme Court order on Rafale documents received a stunning response this evening from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr Gandhi, he said, he was suffering from the "sins of his father" - former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, during whose tenure the scandal over the purchase of Bofors howitzer guns had erupted.

"Sometimes I think, why is he lying so much? I suspect that perhaps the sins of his father from the Bofors deal are weighing on his mind. In order to wash them, he is smearing the same sins on the rest of the world," the Prime Minister said at a rally in Goa capital Panaji.

The top court today said it was ready to use classified documents accessed by the media without authorization in its review of its December order. The Congress has hailed it as a victory.

Mr Gandhi, who has relentlessly targeted PM Modi with corruption allegations over the deal for the 36 Rafale fighter jets, thanked the Supreme Court. "The entire country is saying that Chowkidar has committed theft. It is a day of celebration that the Supreme Court has talked about justice," Rahul Gandhi said.

Various BJP leaders - from defence minister Nirrmala Sitharaman to finance minister Arun Jaitley, spent the day drilling holes in the Congress's ebullience.

Ms Sitharaman accused Mr Gandhi of misquoting the top court and standing in contempt of the court.

What a low life this guy is? Can't spare even long dead people. If he is that sure of Rajiv's guilt in Bofors, BJP had govts for 11 years since Bofors procurement happened. Why didn't he or any of BJP's other leaders ever acted against Rajiv?

Pradhan Sevak is surely rattled.

AMETHI: Union Minister Smriti Irani, who is contesting as a BJP candidate in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi against Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday declared to the Election Commission that she is not a graduate. This is the first time that she makes it clear in her poll affidavit that her three-year degree course was "not completed".

In the category of Highest Educational Qualification, Smriti Irani says "Bachelor of Commerce Part-1" from the School of Open Learning (Correspondence) University of Delhi. The year is 1994, which means she joined the course that year but did not complete it. "Three year degree course not completed," is written in brackets.

First time that Smriti Irani makes it clear in her affidavit that her three-year degree course was "not completed".

She made the same declaration in her 2017 affidavit to the Rajya Sabha, where she is a member.

In the 2014 election, when the Union Minister fought from Amethi for the first time, she had listed Bachelor of Commerce Part-1, School of Open Learning (Correspondence) University of Delhi, 1994.

Way back in 2004, when she contested in Delhi's Chandni Chowk against Congress leader Kapil Sibal, her affidavit only said B.A. or Bachelor of Arts, 1996, Delhi University (School of Correspondence).

2004 affidavit of Smriti Irani said B.A. or Bachelor of Arts, 1996, Delhi University (School of Correspondence).

The minister today also declared assets worth over Rs. 4.71 crore.

Smriti Irani has been accused by the Congress and other opposition parties of providing contradictory information on her education.

One Ahmed Khan filed a petition based on the allegation two years ago. The case was dismissed by a Delhi court, which said it was meant to "needlessly harass her". The petitioner challenged the verdict in the Delhi High Court.

In November, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has been challenged in his constituency Amethi for the second time by Smriti Irani, posted a tweet commenting that "under the BJP, a short-cut to ministries is open for fake degree holders."

His tweet was in the context of allegations that Ankiv Basoya, an ABVP member who won the Delhi University Students Union polls last year, had used a fake degree to gain admission into the Delhi University.

Finally she admits she might not be fully aware of her own educational qualification. Hope her boss follows suit now.

India: General elections underway in parts of country

Delhi
Ahmad Adil and Zahid Rafiq

CHANDIGARH, India / SRINAGAR, Jammu & Kashmir

As India’s general elections started Thursday in some parts of the country, sporadic incidents of violence were reported in some states, with reports of at least two deaths in clashes between political parties.

Since Thursday morning, voters came out to cast their votes in 91 Lok Sabha constituencies across 20 states and Union Territories in the first of the mega seven-phase general elections in the country.

By the end of the day, Indian Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said polling in the first phase ended peacefully “barring minor incidents of violence.”

“We thank the voters for coming out to vote in significant numbers. We would also like to thank the state machinery, security forces, and nodal officers in various states for their support to ensure smooth polling,” local news daily Hindustan Times quoted Sinha as saying.

In the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, local News agency Press Trust of India reported that Indian security personnel fired in the air at a polling place after some people without identity cards tried to forcibly enter to cast their votes. The report said in the state of Maharashtra, Communist Naxals triggered an IED near a polling place in Gadchiroli while voting was underway. No casualties were reported.

The Indian Election Commission was tweeting pictures of voters during the day standing in long queues outside polling places to cast their votes.

During the polls on Thursday, social media was abuzz that many voters found their names missing from the voter rolls.

Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of the capital New Delhi, said on Twitter: “Reports coming from all across India that voters have been deleted on an unprecedented scale.”

Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister in Jammu and Kashmir, in the disputed region of Kashmir, said on Twitter, “Imagine the disappointment a 91-year-old senior citizen feels when he goes all the way to vote & finds his name missing. This is the first time he hasn’t been able to exercise his right to vote. Why is there such conspicuous pin drop silence over such discrepancies?

With the world’s largest electorate -- nearly 900 million -- the elections in India will be held in seven phases through May 19, the counting will be held on May 23, and the results are expected to be announced the same day.

The ruling right-wing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the biggest contender in the elections, with current Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a second term.

Jammu and Kashmir

In Jammu and Kashmir, the elections were held in two constituencies of Jammu and Baramulla on Thursday. According to the Election Commission of India, the voting turnout in the state up to 5 p.m. (1130GMT) was 54.49%. While Jammu saw 72.16%, Baramulla got 34.61% turnout, according to officials.

The low voter percentage in Baramulla was apparently due to the election boycott called for by the region’s pro-independence leadership. The end of the polling saw pro/independence protests. One schoolboy was killed in police firing over the protests in Handwara, north Kashmir.

The boy “had multiple pellet injuries on the chest, neck and abdomen,” Mohammed Rouf, a senior health official in Handwara, told Anadolu Agency.

Earlier in the day, many young people came out to vote in the town. “This is my first time voting because I feel there is a threat to my identity. The right-wing BJP is out to strip the special status of Kashmiris. My vote is to keep away from Kashmir,” said Arjumand, 20, a student, referring to a controversial BJP election pledge made on Tuesday.

The next polling in India is scheduled for next Thursday, April 18.

Interesting bit of info on ECI's current commissioner, Chandra.

The CBDT head under whom the IT department raided Shivakumar’s residence and found copies of Yeddyurappa’s diary, is now an election commissioner of India. Yeddyurappa’s letter, which the IT official submitted to Jaitley as proof of the former chief minister’s signature, was addressed to Chandra. He was due to retire on May this year, but in February, the Modi government promoted him. Chandra is only the second officer from the revenue services to be appointed to the election commission.

Needless to say CBDT did nothing on those diary copies while they're (and ED) super quick to raid opposition leaders. Another instance of quid pro quo?

BJP complains to Election Commission about TMC goons causing violence in Bengal. What a farce West Bengal has become under Didi.

I am bengali myself and I know people's mood. The day people are allowed to vote there freely without fearing for life....Didi's tenure will be over. Bengal has seen the light and becoming 'Modi'fied now.

lol at Smriti "Yale Graduate' Irani. Good spoof this.

https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/con...-row-over-degree-2022061?pfrom=home-topscroll

NEW DELHI: Smriti Irani's declarations over the years on her college degree today inspired an elaborate Congress dig parodying a wildly popular television serial that starred the Union Minister before she joined politics. "No matter what you say, the more you harass me, the harder I will work in Amethi," she shot back at the Congress.
The row over Smriti Irani's educational qualifications was back in the limelight on Thursday after she filed her affidavit as a BJP candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, where she takes on Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

"A new serial is coming, 'Kyunki Mantri Bhi Kabhi Graduate Thi'," Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said at a press conference.

"Its opening line will be 'Qualifications ke bhi roop badalte hain, naye-naye sanche mein dhalte hain, ek degree aati hai, ek degree jaati hai, bante affidavit naye hain' (Qualifications keep changing, keep getting new forms, one degree comes, another degree goes, new affidavits keep forming)," she added, partly singing the title song.

The Congress comments referred to the serial "Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", in which Smriti Irani played the lead. In a marathon run of eight years, she became a household name.

BJP seems to have so many nutcases that it hardly matters whether Modi is around or not.

Congress is nowhere to be seen unless they have somehow become silent majority.

Easy victory for BJP on the cards, most people i have come across on social media seem desperate to see BJP back.
