Pakistan [306/7d & 195/4] beat CSA Invitation XI [318/7d & 182/7d] by 6 wickets in tour match

Pakistan's only practice match before the first Test. What combination should we try before the actual match?

Hoping our batsmen and bowlers get use to the conditions quick enough.

Also, Yasir Shah has still not arrived so he won't play and maybe Fakhar and Abbas will too be given rest so they are completely fit.

Have to play the 'real' combo as that is the only chance they have.

11 bat, 11 bowl, 13 play?

the only major question I see going in to the test series is who opens with Fakhar. Shan or Imam - who is the least of 2 evils

fully expect the bowling to be Abbas, Amir, Hassan, Yasir

Isn't he out of the first test with injury or has he recovered?

So as per news Abbas, Fakhar, Shadab and Yasir won't play this match as either they are not fit yet or in case of Yasir not there.

So from available 12 players it would most probably be:

Shan Masood
Imam Ul Haq
Azhar Ali
Haris Sohail
Asad Shafiq
Babar Azam
Sarfraz Ahmed(C)(Wk)
Faheem Ashraf
Mohammad Amir
Hasan Ali
Shaheen Afridi

Cape Town – The inconvenient thumb injury to key all-rounder Vernon Philander unsettles South Africa in more ways than may be imagined for the first Test against Pakistan at Centurion from Boxing Day.

Just for one thing, losing the eternally probing seamer and dogged lower-order batsman leaves the Proteas’ tail looking more fragile again, as they give up his reassuring qualities in the No 8 position.

Head coach Ottis Gibson has all but confirmed already that the four-strong frontline attack at SuperSport Park will now be made up, in Philander’s absence, of Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and the squad’s formerly “extra” paceman in Duanne Olivier – it has to be that quartet, of course, as there are no additional specialist bowling options in a once 13-strong party now reduced to 12.

But with young speed prospect Lungi Ngidi also ruled out of high-level combat through injury until some time in February, the transformation-related make-up of the Test XI has been compromised, at least for the short term, as well.

That is because, if the Proteas go in with the expected batting top seven (at least before Philander’s pull-out from one slot below it) their side will return to a situation not visited for some time: only fielding four players of colour.

Despite the presence of a fresh face in the broader squad in the shape of exciting 23-year-old Cape Cobras right-hander Zubayr Hamza, it had initially seemed difficult to imagine the home outfit deviating from the status quo on the batting front: in other words, a top seven made up (possibly in this order, too) of Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn, Hashim Amla, captain Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

But that potentially puts some stress, if you like, on the transformation side of things.

The issue became a bigger consideration just over two years ago when Cricket South Africa formally decided to extend “targets” from the domestic arena into the Proteas fold.

Under the revised transformation guidelines, the stipulated average minimum of players of colours in the national team was 54 percent, including an average minimum of 18 percent black African representation.

The latter target would still be met in the Boxing Day Test, considering the presence of Bavuma and Rabada.

But if the Proteas do go in with seven white players in the XI at SuperSport Park, the overall percentage of players of colour representing the home cause will fall to an unusually low – in the current climate - 36.36.

For each of their last away and home Tests (against Sri Lanka in Colombo and Australia in Johannesburg respectively) the racial split was 6-5 which, at 45.45 percent in a players-of-colour context, is at least closer to the more desired figure.

Even then, though, the Test-team situation has tended to lag behind the progress made at both limited-overs levels, where the Proteas have sometimes – and increasingly - been able to seamlessly field seven or eight players of colour in the XI without having to obsess too much about the formal racial-balance requirements.

Slower progress in the five-day landscape has been compensated for by the fact that the national side’s targets are based on an average of the cumulative representation across all three formats in a season.

Against that backdrop, the Proteas may not be taking too much of a “hit” should a temporary 7-4 split be deemed acceptable for Centurion.

CSA president Chris Nenzani is on record as saying: “Our selectors and team management will have the flexibility to deal with varying circumstances.”

Nevertheless, there are differing political factions within the corridors of the organisation, with some more strident than others about enforcing transformation needs on a consistent basis.

So it is probably not out of the question that Philander’s withdrawal from the Test slightly increases the likelihood that Hamza makes his debut on Boxing Day rather than carries drinks, if that was the original intention.

If so, the burning question would be: who, of the more regular batsmen, sits out?

The least established of the present top seven is De Bruyn, although the six-cap player, 26, made a defiant maiden century in his last Test vigil, the second innings of the heavy defeat at Colombo.

It would be a cruel move indeed to leave him out at his Titans home venue, although any of the others being side-lined at this point would represent even more of a startling step …

just seen the south african invitational squad for practice match full of amateurs

Will be a battle between Shan/Imam, Rahul/Vijay for who is the worst opening partnership.

The injuries to Philander and Ngidi gift another huge thing to Pakistan.

I wrote last March when I was in South Africa that the mandatory racial quotas are averaged over a calendar year, and that against Australia and India the South Africans has picked excessive numbers of white players, which would have to be cancelled out by picking more non-white players against Pakistan.

The loss of Philander and Ngidi leave a quota problem and the recall of Steyn only cancels out the retirement of Morne Morkel.

The pace attack was meant to be two Africans, a Coloured and a white man with an Indian spinner. But now they have 2 white quicks with one Indian spinner and one black quick.

Now they have to drop a white batsman to accommodate Hamza.

And they can’t drop Amla in spite of his obvious decline.

A person (Trumpelmann) who's average in first class cricket is below 10 and he is smacking Amir for boundaries🙄🙄

Looks Amir has not improved at all.Very very disappointed with him. He does not have any motivation to play for national team but International leagues like WI players

If Amir cannot get wickets in this tour match as well as the SA series, it will be a serious indictment on Pakistani batsmen in the domestic who give wickets to Amir. Amir averages under 20 in domestics while he cannot seem to buy a wicket in international cricket. That tells you a lot about the strength of our batting.

Why only Amir?

None of the bowlers have taken a wicket yet and Hasan is going at 5 RPO.

I think it's been corrected. The bowler was Shaheen Afridi not Shadab

Having just one practice match is disastrous honestly. The bowlers and batsmen need time and practice to adjust their game. I am not at all surprised to see the bowlers struggling so far.

Patience guys. Normally touring teams dont go full throttle in practice games. Remember, India was hopeless in the practice game in Aust and then went onto win the 1st test.

Even 20 practice matches will not make Azhar, Shafiq, Haris any good.

We are struggling to wickets against nobodies. Imagine what SA batsmen will do with us.

1 practice match is really not enough. But now a days that's what teams have. Whoever adapts the conditions quickly succeeds.

Time to stand still - Amir has taken a wicket!

Just checked the schedule of this tour. And the first test is at centurion, and not at Cape town or Durban which are normally used to welcome the Asian teams. Great chance for Pakistan to go 1-0 up . Just win the toss and bat first and half the game is won.
I don't think this SAF batting lineup can chase in the fourth inning.

For the bowlers, today is just about getting the length right for the First and Third Tests, where conditions will be similar.

We have seen Bumrah, Yadav and Ishant bowl too short at Perth this week, and those two Tests will be on similar wickets.

If pak bowlers get their lengths right no top order ll stand against them. Unfortunately they not able to do that for a very long time. I feel this warmup is another proof our bowlers ll get smacked in SA :(

The benoni wicket here and what will be served up during test series will be completely different, add to that 1 warm up game before series is a joke in itself.

I dont think international players put much effort in such domestic games. The bowling figures maybe deceptive as players might just be bowling at lower speeds using least effort. They dont wanna be injured in practise games... like Shaw

Richards is a good find for sa. 4 centuries in 10 first class innings and an average of 74.77 (one not out)
Very impressive

Being positive is good but that's a bit much...Unknown players playing International bowlers with ease and scoring at 3.5 ~4RPO that's a worrying sign.

Why is no one looking at the fact that Aus xi against india was scoring at 5rpo till the 25th over and that team had 7 players that hadn't even made their first class debut.
They didn't have Bumrah for most of the match, and we don't have Abbas.

This Joshua Richards seems a very good prospect for SA. 5 FC matches with 4 centuries. Amazing start to his career. Reading some SA cricket forums and someone there said this could have been his 6th century in 6 days.

The SA batsmen are playing FC matches as well this week to get some red ball practice in. Interestingly, the SA coach ordered the bowlers to not play (I guess for injury scares), but Duane Oliver was still selected by his domestic side. Good thing for us is Bavuma and de Bruyn didn't play because of injuries. Scary thing is according to local reports, Oliver seems unplayable. He also hit both Markram and Elgar in one over, requiring both to receive medical attention. Amla not in great form either - out first ball.

Lol, do you guys seriously think the players are playing to win this "match"? These games are glorified net sessions, don't take the stats seriously, please.

Hope we do not get any injuries though. And why is Yasir Shah not in South Africa already? He needs to get used to the conditions the most.

Really doubt he'd be in the XI

Exactly 😂
People are taking this WAY too seriously. Look at how the aus xi scored 500+ against india, and you wouldn't say that they are bad at bowling just because of that. They are one of the top sides in the world.

ACKERMAN AND RICHARDS MAKE PAKISTAN TOIL

Wednesday, 19 December 2018

Pakistan began their tour of South Africa with a difficult opening day of their three-day warm-up game against a CSA Invitation XI after an unbeaten century by Marques Ackerman made the tourists toil in Benoni on Wednesday.

The home captain struck 103 not out (132 balls, 14 fours, 1 six) to help his side amass 318 for seven declared, before the visitors reached two for none by stumps at Willowmoore Park.

Ackerman, 22, was not the only home batsman to shine, with Joshua Richards falling two short of a century (98 off 134 balls, 11 fours, 1 six). The teenager shared in an opening stand of 87 with Neil Brand (38) after the South Africans had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Pakistan’s first wicket was taken by star fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who ended with figures of one for 47 in 13.3 overs.

The pick of the bowlers, though, was batsman Azhar Ali after he claimed two for 19 in eight overs, with a double also for all-rounder Faheem Ashraf (2/45).

Other South Africans to make meaningful contributions were Matthew Breetzke (24) and Kyle Simmonds (30).

The tourists, who begin the first of three Castle Lager Tests against the Standard Bank Proteas on Boxing Day – next Wednesday – then had Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq (both on one) take them through to stumps 316 runs behind.
