Pakistan finish on 126/5 at Stumps on rain-hit Day 1 of 2nd Test against England

And what did we do in South Africa in spite of you laying the framework of how we were going to whitewash their aging side?
The South Africa side that lost 2-0 at home to Sri Lanka the following month?

Believe it or not, I largely agree with your assessments. I think Babar is Pakistan’s only top class player although Shaheen, Naseem, Shadab and Rizwan have great potential.

But I think you over-estimate most other teams. I agree about Shan Masood, but I still think that in 2020 he is the equal of Burns and better than the 35 year old Azhar and 34 year old Shafiq.

But I don’t understand why you are such a relentlessly black cloud. Do you enjoy misery?

I’m English. We’d give anything for not just Babar but also Rizwan, Shadab, Naseem and Shaheen. We can only dream of three guys 21 and under as good as Shadab, Naseem and Shaheen.

Root and Stokes are great. Broad and Woakes are great home track bullies. But after that, the rest of our team is as bad as yours.

This pair actually have played very well. Took punch and survived, if they can take PAK to lunch, no reason to post 350+ here in first innings, which will be required in this Test.

Abid has looked okish when he has played late and with the straight face of the bat. The way he came out driving in the morning under these conditions was a shocker though.

Babar! Need to Play like Fab 4 and score a big daddy hundred otherwise he will be just a good test player not world class in test.

These guys are so similar. Both have crouching stance. Both named A. Ali. Both right-handed. Both boring me to sleep.

He scored 30s and 40s in South Africa and people were doing bhangra, which illustrates the point I am making.

A typical 10 innings period for Masood against a good attack looks like this, and that will not change in the future:

12, 0, 1, 32, 45, 27, 23, 70 or 100, 0, 1

He might play the short ball effectively but he is a dud against other types of deliveries, and once he gets figured out, he has nothing to fall back on.

He made a 75 in S A,notjust30sand 40s 8n a series whereall Pak bats were getting out cheapely, and also hit 3 consecutive centuries so not the array of scores you indicated.

woakes is very good for English conditions but for Pakistan batters he is better than Steyn, Anderson etc.

Someone get out. They have done the job of playing out the new ball. Now let Babar attack before the second new ball.

Moti Choor ke Ladoo ... ap ke moon main.

No they haven't. The red Dukes swings for longer. Babar should be coming in after lunch.

Sometimes I feel praise like 'Azhar is Pakistan's best batsmen' by Anderson does more damage to our country than Anderson's bowling

But the overhead conditions have certainly made it tough for batting....these two have done well to hang in so far

Pakistan have negotiated Woakes's straighter ball on the Pads pretty well here

A thing which Pak batsmen need to improve and hopefully Younis is working on is how to push forward the scoring a bit once you are set. Azhar and Abid have played enough balls and are set so they can really put the pressure on Eng here by taking those quick singles and putting anything loose away (Which one generally avoids early in the innings).

Anderson bowling 141 kph at 38 years of age. Something to look at for young and middle aged pacers.

A longish inning in England would do wonders for Abid Ali career. Heneefs to learn a lot how to bat in English conditions.

That is what i dont understand ... we do all of our batsmen avoid taking runs at the start of innings. I have never understood it. It is when they hit a boundary they think they are set ....... It is basic mental training which is wrong. It is like these guys have never seen maindad play.

When it comes to being 'generous' to debutants in the opposition, India has a 'glorious' tradition.
I doubt if any other team has displayed as much 'largesse' as india....recent days - you have kyle jamieson, sam curran, lungi ngidi, Musty Fizzer, haseeb hameed...and thats just the last 2-3 years.

Irrespective of how teams play, rain always does its job in Eng.

Thiers predicated no rain anyone in southampton know how long the rain is predicated

DAY 1 - LUNCH

PAK 62/1 (23.4), CRR: 2.61

Abid 33* (72)
Azhar 20* (65)

Min. Overs Remaining: 66.2

Azhar apporaching 6000 runs.

I never saw Salim Malik bat but Azhar passed him. I wonder who was a better player.

A very good morning session for PAK. Azhar was beaten numerous times, but survived without any close calls or drop - if one of the two survivors need to score a hundred.

Salim Malik, by some avenue width. He scored three innings of 99, 80+* & 80+* at Leeds - on green top and under cloud.

Malik the better player but he wasn't a top order batsman. Azhar also the better man.....and not just about match fixing. Imran didn't like Malik for numerous reasons.

Malik by a country mile. He was a genius. Pity about what happened with him but when he played and then captained us we looked like world beaters..then, well the rest is history..

I thought Atherton had announced that storm clouds had diverted south of the ground..? What’s the story? I know rain called for an early lunch but I mean storm wise.

Lack of team player stuff, think Malik wanted to be VC despite JM being present etc.

Yikes....dont see 275+ scores then...and what about 5th day? Stokes not playing is a big blow-u reckon? Curran was awesome against us(india) in 2018...but looks down on pace...i dont think dom bess is gonna run thru sides...and can understand why you guys dont pick moieen Ali....he's been the devil bowler against us and has taken bag full every time he playedus....

Curran looked at better pace in the Windies test.

No clue why they are picking Best, he is not taking wickets. Poor Mo seems to have lost confidence completely. I would pick Leach.

England's problems in the slip cordon have proved very costly this morning and NASSER HUSSAIN has been looking at a couple of the issues that have arisen...

"England have dropped a couple of catches today and they've dropped quite a few this summer - including Ben Stokes, surprisingly. A new slip cordon here doesn't help the situation but also I think they are a bit narrow.

"The first drop, there is not much of a gap between second and third slip. Sibley comes across Burns and you can see Burns thinks it is his catch and, in the end, he almost starts diving out of the way. If there are wider, I think they both go for that one. So not only are they very narrow, Burns also sets himself very late in the piece. So he is putting Sibley off by how late he sets himself."

Very unusual stance Fawad has. That is unlikely to succeed at test level. Why is he in the team?

There is an opportunity to bowl a lot of bouncers to Fawad targeting his body as gets into position. I am trying to remember batsmen who moved a lot while batting. Slater? Mahanama?

Chanderpaul averaged 50+ in his test career and had a similar stance. Fawad should have come in earlier, calling him after 11 years is something which is questionable.

Also had unmatched cricketing IQ. Saqlain has a video on his YT channel explaining some of the advice and tips that Malik gave to him while bowling and it was really clever

that's cool i never knew about malik because nobody talks about him because of his fixing

Saleem Malik was a top batsman.

Modern Pakistani batsmen are jokes (excluding Babar) compared to Saleem.
